CHAMPIOnS CLUB The Champions Club was formed in Spring, 2002, and its mission is to “support and enhance the championship tradition of Mustang football.” The club is an independent operation that works closely with the football program. The club’s first initiatives included: - Through the Adopt-A-Player Progam, helping to subsidize out-of-pocket player expenses with all revenues generated through the program being expended on the players; - To recognize significant contributions to Mustangs Football through the Mustang Football Wall of Champions; and - The construction of the Michael Kirkley Training Centre, a dedicated training facility to enhance the physical conditioning of Western football players We have been very successful in our first three initiatives, generating more than $2.4 million dollars for the various programs. In 2007, the Champions Club added: - Third-Year Internship Program: Providing a quality employment experience for our players between third and fourth year; and - Mustang Football Founders Club which provides ongoing scholarships for our players. The tournament is a major fund-raiser for the Champions Club initiatives. It is held every year at Firerock Golf Club on the Friday before training camp in August. 6565 Adopt-a-Player Program The Adopt-A-Player Program was established in 2002 with 70 sponsors supporting the Western Mustangs football team. The level of involvement has grown each year with over 200 now contributing to the program – starting with just over 100 in 2003. The unavoidable costs assumed by football players increase steadily and they require support.
