It is wonderful to be back in London
and serving in the role of Director of
Sport and Recreation Services here
at Western. Thank you to so many at
Western and in the London community
for the very warm welcome home. I
have so many fond memories as a
student-athlete here at Western and
it is a privilege for me to return to my
alma mater to build on the success of
the past and to create opportunities for
the next generation of Mustangs.
The success of Western Mustangs
football is unprecedented with 28
Yates Cup Championships, the most
appearances within the CIS at Vanier
Cups, and six Vanier Cup titles. This
season marks the 50th anniversary
of the 1959 National Championship
team which will be recognized at
Homecoming this fall.

The final item to check in the list of todos
for the Mustangs is now to return to
the Vanier Cup in 2009 and win it all.
The team will build on the success
from 2008 in order to achieve their
ultimate goal.
Last season offered many great
milestones.
Michael Faulds led the nation in
passing yards and is closing in on the
all-time Mustangs career passing yard
mark.
Matt Carapella tied the CIS record for
career interceptions.

It’s all building positive momentum
toward the 2009 season which started
off with a bang in a 32-17 victory over
the No. 10 ranked Ottawa Gee-Gees.
After Week 1, the Mustangs are
ranked No. 2 in the nation behind only
Laval.
With a greater student presence
expected in 2009 - student tickets
are free for all
games except

tough to match in

difference in providing much-appreciated
support in recruiting, coaching
improvements and equipment.
It’s been a quick rise to the top
for Western’s football program, with
Marshall coming back to coach - but it
was not immediate.
In 2007, Marshall was immediately
under fire, going 0-4 with Western after
being let go by the Hamilton Tiger-Cats of
the CFL - then Marshall guided Western
to seven straight wins (four in the
regular season
and three in the playoff) in 2007 and a
10-2 overall regular season and playoff
record in 2008.
The only blemishes on Western’s
record from 2008 were a road loss to
Queen’s - where the scoreline did not
reflect how close Western was in the
game - and a loss to Laval in the Vanier
Cup.
The pressure is on Western, with
expectations high. The 2009 season will
be one to remember - hopefully ending
with a CIS record seventh Vanier Cup
title.

2009-10 Season Outlook
LONDON, Ont. - If the maxims about
third time lucky are any sign, the
Western Mustangs will welcome a little
bit of luck as the final ingredient in their
potion for a national championship.
Western’s bid for a national title
would fall into the emerging theeyear
progression: Yates Cup in 2007,
Mitchell Bowl in 2008 and possibly the
Vanier Cup in 2009? If there’s any year
the deck is stacked in their favour, it’s
2009. The Mustangs boast a solid crop
of returning players and an impressive
recruiting class. The coaches and
players hope it pays dividends in helping
to advance Western to the national final
for the first time in over a decade.
In his third season at the helm,
Western’s head coach Greg Marshall
and the Mustangs hope they will finish
the year hoisting the Vanier Cup. The
Vanier is something which has eluded
Marshall’s head coaching tenure in the
CIS. Marshall won his 17th Yates Cup
through his football career (three as a
player and 14 coaching) after Western
thumped the Ottawa Gee-Gees 31-
17 in the 101st playing of the Ontario
university football final at TD Waterhouse
Stadium in November, 2008. A year
earlier, Marshall guided the Mustangs
to a miraculous turnaround culminating
with a Yates Cup road-win over Guelph
after starting the season 0-4.
This year, Western is the early favourite
to win the 102nd Yates - a position
Marshall’s Mustangs have not seen
themselves in since his arrival here.

Michael Faulds returns for a fifth and
final season with the Mustangs with a
simple goal: winning the Vanier Cup.
Approaching a number of career
milestones in Mustangs football
history, the Eden Mills, Ont., native
is a preseason favourite for the Hec
Crighton.
Any success Western has falls largely
on his shoulders. He’ll settle for nothing
less than a championship.
“Michael Faulds is - and this is not just
my opinion - the top quarterback in
the country,” Marshall said. “I am very
surprised he was not a first-team all-star
last year. As good as he is, he is also a
top coachable competitor.”

High School, Aylmer, Ont.) and Marko
Isakov (Toronto) for the back up spot.
RUnnInG BACKS/FULLBACKS
The Mustangs are deep at the running
back position entering the 2009
campaign - a combination of experience
and better health gives great optimism
for coach Greg Marshall, himself a
former back.
Toronto Argonauts prospect Da’shawn
Thomas (Conyers, Ga.) will add
considerable
depth to a
backfield that
boasts both
experience and
promise.
“He’s athletic
and he can
run and he
can catch,”
Marshall said.
“He’s also a
really good
kid and he is
really likeable.
He has no
attitude.”
Nathan Riva (LaSalle, Ont.), who
emerged as the top ground threat in the
second half of the 2009 season, and
John Leckie (Georgetown, Ont.), who
was a strong red-zone presence for
Western are both back after their rookie
campaigns.
“We can probably get Riva out of the
backfield to push the ball and spread
out the offence,” Marshall said. “Before
(in 2008), we really had no deep threat
receiver. We expect that will change this
season.”
Ben Roberts (London, Ont.) and Jerimy
Hipperson (st. catharines, Ont.) return
from 2008 injuries. Reliable fullback Dan
Duff (London, Ont.) is an excellent pass
blocker while Ryan Tremblay (London,
Ont.), a 2008 transfer from Simon
Fraser in Burnaby, B.C., will likely move
to the slot and return to special teams
as a kick and punt returner.
“Our running game will be much better
this year,” Marshall predicted. “We relied
too much on the passing game last year
and losing Roberts early and Hipperson
we lost a lot of depth. We had to go with
the trial-and-error approach.”
RECEIVERS
Probably the biggest concern for
Marshall entering the 2008 season,
Western can rest easier after a handful
of rookies gained valuable experience
in 2008.
“I’m not worried like I was last year going
into the season about the receivers,”
Marshall said. “The tough part this year
will be deciding who will play.”
Josh Svec (Blenheim, Ont.), a graduate
student enrolled in the Masters
program in kinesiology with a focus
on coaching, comes to Western from
Waterloo and adds veteran presence,
along with returning inside receivers
Jesse Bellamy (Guelph, Ont.) and Mike
Hegarty (Sarnia, Ont.) who are both
back for a final season.

A healthy Zach Bull (Port Colborne,
Ont.) also returns along with sophomores
Tremblay, Nick Trevail (London, Ont.),
Nick Pasic (London, Ont.) and Scott
Janz (Winnipeg, Man.). Other receivers
entering camp with potential included
Ryan McCarthy (Burlington, Ont.),
McCartney Sealey (USA) and Zanth
Jarvis (Oshawa, Ont.).
OFFEnSIVE LInE
Despite the graduation of tackle Richard
Zulys (property of Toronto Argonauts),
Western will still be deep at the offensive
position - something Marshall knows is
critical to success in Bowl games.
Guard Matt Norman (Montreal) and
versatile lineman Ahmad Jaradat
(London, Ont.) return for their
sophomore seasons, while Andy Rady
(London, Ont.) enrolled in Law School
and returns as a fifth-year presence
along with Toronto Argonauts draft pick
Zach Pollari (Guelph, Ont.).
“Pollari has taken that next step,”
Marshall said. “Our offensive line is
close to where we need to be... (But) we
need to protect Michael better.”
Freshman Shane Bergman (Waterford,
Ont.) is expected to challenge for a
starting spot on the line and could be
the prize recruit. At 6’7, 365 lbs., and
nicknamed “the Canadian Shield” by

and conditioning coach Jeff Watson,
he has caught the attention of many
already running a 5.4, 40-yard dash,
and benching 23 times at 225 pounds.
Lineman coach Chris Bertoia, who
comes home to London, Ont., after
spending time at St. Francis Xavier,
is excited about other recruits as well
adding depth to the line spots.
DEFEnCE
DEFEnSIVE LInE
With Vaughn Martin (London, Ont.)
declaring as an underclassman for the
NFL Draft and gone to the San Diego
Chargers in the off-season, Marshall’s
biggest concern is filling his spot.
In particular, Marshall is anxious
about what the squad will do to fill the
defensive end role. Incoming Ottawa
native Scott Fournier, a product of the
St. Mark’s program, could fill the void.
“The loss of Vaughn Martin leaves a big
hole,” Marshall said. “But truthfully we
don’t have a lot of depth at the defensive
end spot. We may have to move some
guys out there and try them out there
and see (what happens).”
Chris Greaves (Mississauga, Ont.) will
be a leader on the line, while Mike Van
Praet (London, Ont.) is back after a
strong rookie year.
Marshall said he may also look to move
linebacker David Lee (London, Ont.) to
the defensive end position. Freshman
Mitchell Bec (Chestermere, Alta.)
and sophomore Alexander Robinson
(Vancouver, B.C.) could also fight for a
starting spot.
LInEBACKERS
Led by junior middle linebacker John
Surla (Niagara Falls, Ont.) the Mustangs
are solid in the middle of the field.
Adrian Kaiser (London, Ont.), who took
advantage of the departure of Jason
Kosec in 2008, emerged as a suprise
success story at the outside, weak-side
linebacker spot.
“He just got better and better,” Marshall
said. “He was a very important player
throughout the late part of the regular
season and our playoff run.”
With Jonathan Hood graduated, a hole
remains at the other outside - or strong
side - linebacker spot. Marshall expects
steadily improving Conor Elliot could be
the starter.
Burlington, Ont., freshman Jared
McCrory and sophomores Ben Bahrami
(Vancouver, B.C.) and Andrew Buzzeo
(Windsor, Ont.) provide depth.
DEFEnSIVE BACKS
Losing two players expected to be in
the mix with Harold Mutobola, who was
injured in the off-season, and Kenny
Mwangi, Western isn’t as deep as they
expected to be at the start of 2009.
Graduated safety Matt Carapella and
defensive backs Corey McNair and
Andrew Bain will force the Mustangs to
put some younger players into starting
roles.
Marshall is confident Craig Butler
(London, Ont.) will be able to fill in
immediately for Carapella at safety.
“We only have one of him though,”
Marshall said.
Burlington, Ont., native Mike Spence
may also be able to slide back into the
safety spot or as a defensive back in
some situations.
Aaron Handsor (Chatham, Ont.) is
expected to fight for a starting role,
beginning camp well with strong test
results. Cory Watson (London, Ont.)
returns for a fifth season along with
2008-McMaster transfer Josh Foster
(London, Ont.)
“Down the stretch, he became our
shutdown corner,” Marshall said of
Foster, whom he recruited to McMaster
just prior to his hire with the Hamilton
Tiger-Cats of the CFL.
Vanier College product Jamie Symianick
(Montreal) will join his former teammate
Matthew Norman with the Mustangs
this season. Marshall expects him to
fight for a starting role as well.
SPECIAL TEAMS
Reliable kicker and punter Darryl
Wheeler (Hamilton, Ont.) has been
training hard in the off-season and
appears to be the incumbent but will be
tested by St. Catharines, Ont., kicker
Lirim Hajrullahu who was named to
the all-star team at the World Junior
Football Championships after starring
for Team Canada in Canton, Ohio, in
July (a team with Mustangs special
teams coordinator Mickey Donovan
coaching him).
The list of kick and punt returners will
include Craig Butler, Ryan Tremblay
and Nathan Riva and McCathey Sealey,
while linebacker John Surla is a menace
on special teams tackles.

Anyone who was there in the in the
rickety student stands of beloved old
J.W. Little Stadium and watched Greg
Marshall carry the ball remembers one
thing above all others. He was strong
and fast and powerful, one of the
finest running backs ever produced in
Canadian college football, a Mustang
from 1978-81 and the winner of the
Hec Crighton trophy as the country’s
outstanding player in 1980.
But Marshall’s trademark as a player
was his determination.
Once his nose was pointed toward
the endzone, it took a gang of tacklers
to stop him - and every time he was
denied, you knew that he’d be back,
that it was only a matter of time before
he reached his goal. Those who got
in his way did so at their own peril.
There have been many great Western
running backs through the years,
including Marshall’s own brother
Blake, but to these, perhaps nostalgic
eyes, he was the best of the best.
Marshall’s successful second
career as a coach has been built on
exactly that same kind of dedication,
commitment and work ethic.
During his playing days as a Mustang,
Marshall was part of a great Western
team that won four consecutive
Yates Cups. He was drafted by the
Edmonton Eskimos of the Canadian
Football League, and was on his way
to claiming a starting job when a knee
injury sadly ended his career after
three seasons.
Marshall came back to Western
in 1984 to enter teacher’s college.
Head coach Larry Haylor, sensing
an opportunity, asked him if he’d like
to join the Mustangs’ coaching staff
while finishing his degree. Marshall
threw himself into learning the game
from the sidelines. As the Mustangs
offensive coordinator from 1992 to
1996, he established himself as one
of the best young coaching minds in
the college game, and was on board

for two Vanier Cup victories.
In 1997, he was hired away by
McMaster University to revive its
nearly moribund football program.
The Marauders had won a total of
six games the past four seasons
combined, and none at all in the
previous year. The improvements
under Marshall were immediate.
Building a team from the foundations
up—among other things out-recruiting
the competition—he would finish with
a combined record of 42-12-2, and
with four consecutive Yates Cup
victories between 2000 and 2003.
Marshall’s team also produced its
own Hec Crighton-winning running
back, Jesse Lumsden.
In 2000, Marshall was named the CIS
coach of the year - just the second
person (the other was Rick Zmich)
to have been recognized during his
career as both the best player and
best coach in Canadian college
football.
In December 2003, Marshall
was hired to turn around another
dysfunctional football organization,
the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, becoming
the first CIS coach to make the leap
directly to a head coaching position
in the Canadian Football League.
Again, the results were immediate: a
1-17 team the year before Marshall
arrived, the Tiger-Cats finished 9-8-1
in 2004 and he was named the CFL’s
coach of the year - the first rookie
head coach to win that honour since
Ray Jauch in 1971 .
When Marshall’s Hamilton tenure
came to an end four games into the
2006 CFL season, The University of
Western Ontario made sure that he
wouldn’t be idle for very long. He was
hired almost immediately as offensive
coordinator of the Mustangs with
the understanding that on Haylor’s
retirement at the end of that season,
Marshall would replace him as head
coach.
“The timing was perfect,” he says.
“And Western is where I played, where
I grew up, where I learned football. It
was like coming home for me.”
In his first year at the helm, the
Mustangs finished with a 4-4 regular
season record after starting 0-4, and
then going on a roll that took them all
the way to a Yates Cup win over the
University of Guelph.
“That was ahead of schedule,”
Marshall admits.
Last season, even though they were
starting five freshmen on offence,
including two on the offensive line,
Marshall’s Mustangs finished the
regular season 7-1, won the Yates
Cup again (Marshall is now 16-4 in
the Ontario university championship
game as a player and coach), beat
Saint Mary’s in the Mitchell Bowl (his
first CIS bowl game victory as a head
coach), and finished with Western’s
record 12th Vanier Cup appearance,
the first since 1995, where they were
beaten by a powerful team from
Laval.
Marshall enters the 2009 season minus
standout defensive lineman Vaughn
Martin, who left after his second year
for the San Diego Chargers, (the first
CIS underclassman ever to land in
the NFL) but with a team seasoned
by last year’s long post-season run,
and led by fifth year quarterback
Michael Faulds.
It is, he understands, one of those
relatively rare windows of opportunity
for a college coach, when everything
could fall into place.
“Michael Faulds is the best
quarterback in the country,” Marshall
says. “He’s outstanding, a fierce
competitor. That’s half of it right there.
We will be competitive in all of the
games that Michael plays.”
Greg Marshall lives in North London
with his wife Joan, and his sons
Donnie (a quarterback on the
Mustangs’ squad), Brian and Tommy.

Mickey Donovan Paul Gleason
Special Teams Coordinator, Linebackers Defensive Coordinator
Mickey Donovan is a full-time assistant coach with the Mustangs. This
season will mark his third year with the team.
Donovan is from Laconia, New Hampshire. He coached with New
Hampshire State (Division 1-AA) and prior to this, played the position of
linebacker at both the University of Maine and at Concordia University.
During his time as a player in the CIS, he was named a two-time All-
Canadian and national defensive player of the year.
He was invited to try-out for the Hamilton Tiger-Cats when Greg
Marshall was head coach. Marshall was so impressed with Donovan
that even after he suffered a devastating knee injury, Marshall convinced
management to keep him on the team.
Donovan was originally brought in by Marshall to coach the linebackers.
His role has since developed and he is also the special teams and
recruiting co-ordinator.
In his role as recruiting co-ordinator, Donovan has landed recruits
including defensive tackle Vaughn Martin, who in April 2009, received a
fourth-round draft pick to the San Diego Chargers, linebacker John Surla,
running back Jerimy Hipperson and offensive lineman Matt Norman.
Donovan’s actions have had a tremendous impact on the team. His
contributions can be seen from a recruiting perspective as well as in
game preparation and on-field improvements.
His talent as a coach led him to become the special teams co-ordinator
for Team Canada during the summer of 2009.
Donovan is enthusiastic and energetic about his role with the Mustangs
football team.
He is recently married to his wife Ashley.
Paul Gleason is a measure of coaching success, leaving a positive
stamp on any program he joins.
A teacher at St. Thomas Aquinas High School in London, Gleason
has served as the Mustangs Defensive Coordinator since 2003. He also
served as the linebackers coach from 1998 until 2006.
Mild-mannered and mellow off the field, the Wilfrid Laurier and Windsor
graduate led the recruiting charge from 1998 onward at Western. He now
shares the responsibility with Donovan.
As a coach, Gleason emphasizes the need for players to understand
and believe in the goals set by the team. He credits this approach for the
success of the Mustangs’ defense during their 2007 Yates Cup victory,
when they held opposing teams to a total of 56 points in three postseason
games.
Gleason was a head coach at Catholic Central High School from
1990 -1997 where he went an impressive 67-4-1. The run included five
undefeated seasons and seven high school championships – the latter,
a London Conference record still held by Gleason. He also coached
the London Conference All-Star Team from 1995 to 1998 and prior to
becoming head coach at CCH, won two conference championships as
the defensive coordinator (1987 and 1988). Gleason has his Master of
Arts degree with a coaching specialization from Western. He is also the
co-owner of the Forest City Football Camp that has operated in London
for the past 12 years.
He lives in London with his wife Stephanie and their new son Morgan.

Could Michael
Faulds add his name

The fifth-year
quarterback is a
by Andy Watson
preseason favourite for the award
but will have to let his action on
the field do the talking.
He’s says he’s ready for the
challenge but cares only about
team success for the time being
and will ignore the personal
accolades for the time being.
“It’s my final year. After the
(2008) Vanier Cup I didn’t take any
time off. I was watching film on the
Monday right after the game.”
He’s hungry to win. He took the
loss personally.
“I want to win it all,” he said. “We
took a great step two years ago
(winning the Yates Cup in Guelph)...
Then last year we progressed and
won the Mitchell Bowl. now we
want to win it all. Anything less will
be a disappointment.”
“This year, we want to go into
the Vanier Cup a little smarter,”
Faulds said. “We made some
strides to come back in the (2008)
vanier Cup but we dug ourselves
too deep a hole. We needed to be
better limiting our mistakes.”

athlete who also played basketball
with the Mustangs last season, and
nick Trevail who was often doubleteammed.
“It was mentally tough losing
Zach,” Faulds said.
Closing in on the 10,000 yard
passing mark in regular season
games - Faulds needs just 2,222 yards
to reach it - and a number of Mustangs
all-time highs, Faulds said the
personal accolades do not measure
up against team accomplishments.
“Really it’s not important to me,” he
said. “I want to win. The milestones
don’t really matter now. Ten years
from now milestones will allow me to
look back at what I accomplished but
I want a ring around my finger.”
He said his off-season training has
been going really well with blend of
passing sessions and strength and
conditioning training.
“I had a good off-season program
with throwing and weight training with
(full-time strength and conditioning
coach) Jeff Watson. I feel great.”
Many Mustangs players - more than
previous years, Faulds said - stayed
in London over the summer working
out, hanging out and building greater
camaraderie.
“It’s a great culture here... nick Pasic
didn’t miss a summer session in 2008
and you saw the results,” Faulds said
of the rookie receiver who emerged
as a surprisingly effective player and
starter in 2008. “It’s so important to
have the chemistry together of being
around the team every day. We’ve
been around each other all summer.
We’re a really tight group.”
Faulds leads by example with his
off-season regiment - and he is happy
to be in that role.
“I really instil leadership amongst
other players and then they lead us,”
Faulds said, noting linebackers John
Surla and Adrian Kaiser have stepped
into fill the leadership role left by
graduating captain and safety Matt
Carapella.
“All summer, they did a good job at
getting the guys going and keeping

them on task.”
Faulds knows he is looked up to by
other players.
“All our leaders have a good work
ethic and lead by example,” Faulds
said. “You have to be the hardest
worker and who by example.”
With more experience entering the
2009 training camp - especially with
many of the offensive rookies with
a year under the belt including 2008
starters nathan Riva, John Leckie,
nick Pasic, nick Trevail, Matthew
norman and Ahmad Jaradat - Faulds
is excited about what the offence can
accomplish.
For them to start in the Vanier
Cup, Faulds said “that’s quite and
accomplishment in your first year.”
He’s anxious about the number of
weapons he’ll have to choose from
including Waterloo-transfer Josh Svec
with whom he’ll study in a Masters in
Kinesiology (Coaching) under the
same advisor, former football coach
Bob LaRose.
Jesse Bellamy, his favourite target
in 2008, Pasic, Trevail, Jeremy Trader
and Ryan Tremblay will be likely
starters at receiver along with Svec.
Faulds believes he’ll have better
protection in 2009 with a strong
offensive line anchored by fifth-years
guard Zach Pollari and centre/guard
Andy Rady, who helped solidify
the line for the Mustangs when he
enrolled in Law School.
The two seniors are joined by
sophomore guard Matthew norman
and sophomore tackle/centre Ahmad
Jaradat and likely rookie Shane
Bergman who stands at 6’7 and
weights 365 lbs.
“Matt and Ahmad had amazing
rookie seasons,” Faulds said.
“Ahmad is, and I know some of the
other lineman won’t like me saying
this, but probably he’s our best allround
lineman. He has strength,
speed and tenacity on gameday
that is unmatched. And Matt
norman is probably our
best run blocker and
he probably had
the most pancakes on the team last
year.”
“Our offence is complicated,”
Faulds admitted. “For them to be able
to stick in and work with it so quickly
was a great success.”
The fifth-year pivot, who transfered
to Western from Toledo (nCAA), also
has the respect of his coaches.
“Michael Faulds is - and this is not
just my opinion - the top quarterback
in the country,” said Mustangs head
coach Greg Marshall. “He’s mature,
he’s a positive influence on the
guys around him, and he’s a strong
leader.”
In his first three seasons at Western,
Faulds started off red-hot. If not for a
midseason injury that knocked him
out for three games in his first CIS
season, Faulds would have easily
eclipsed the 2,000-yard passing mark
for the season - a milestone surpassed
by only two other Mustangs, Chris
Hessel (2002-04) and Michael O’Brien
(2000) (Faulds surpassed the mark in
2007 and 2008). nonetheless, Faulds
finished with an impressive total of
1,293 yards in his first season after
completing 83/124 passes. After a
stellar sophomore season, throwing
for 1,596 yards (14th in CIS), Faulds
continued to show his improved play.
But once again, Faulds was hampered
by injuries that forced him to miss the
post-season.
Faulds has a calmer, cooler
mentality entering the 2009
campaign.
“It is different this year. Overall, the
confidence of where this team is and
where it is going is much higher,” he
admits. “now we’re looking outside
the OUA with our goals. We still
respect the fact that we have to go
through this tough OUA schedule to
get to our goal of winning the Vanier
Cup, but we definitely have a different
mindset.”
“It’s a confident swagger. We’re
not a team that’s going to chirp or talk
down to other teams. We have the
confidence that in any game we can
beat any opponent.”
And that includes Laval.
Faulds is wary that Queen’s and
Wilfrid Laurier both return a number
of players - the Gaels lose only seven
dress players.
“We play two of the top echelon
teams in our first two weeks with
Ottawa and Laurier,” Faulds said.
“And with the middle-tier teams, you
have to respect them because you
never know what they can do. Guelph
has the Dunk-FitzGibbon combination
and McMaster had a strong recruiting
year.”
Despite the tough opening to the ,
Faulds is calm and collected.
“I think I’m less nervous than I
was in previous years,” Faulds said.
“Game days in the past we were
confident but we didn’t automatically
think we were going to win. We
thought ‘we can maybe lose that game
on the schedule’...We still prepare just
as hard for all the teams, overall in the
past our confidence wasn’t there like
it is now.”
Faulds hopes the experience for
many of the sophomores, juniors
and seniors in the 10 do-or-die
games they’ve played in the past two
seasons will make them a mature
threat to other teams once playoffs
begin.
“We were lucky to have those
playoff games. Even in our home
opener last year we were down 18
points and the experience from going
to the Mitchell Bowl in Manitoba and
winning the Yates Cup after starting
0-4 the previous year helped us to
know we can win and to believe in
‘anything is possible’.”

One of the top defensive players in
the nation in 2008, junior linebacker
John Surla is out to prove the Western
Mustangs were not a one-year wonder
in qualifying for the 2008 Desjardins
Vanier Cup.
The niagara Falls, Ont., native
said he is excited about the 2009
season and sacrificed his summer to
improving his physical fitness, all in
hopes of advancing to the 2009 Vanier
Cup and winning it.
“To get to the very
last game it’s a good
feeling,” Surla said
of his first Vanier
Cup experience.
“But when we
lost, I started to
think immediately
about the next season.
I definitely increased my
preparation work in the
offseason.”
And he got to work right
away, working with strength
and conditioning coach
Jeff Watson and selling tickets as a
summer job for Western Mustangs
football in the community.
Despite being a junior, Surla will be
one of the more experienced players
on the Mustangs defence in 2009 after
seven starters either graduated or
moved on.
“With what we have, we’re
pretty young, but we’ll be
alright,” Surla said. “We
have freshmen who have
have the chance to make
a big impact right away.
There will be mistakes
but once we get over
the little hump, we’ll be
good.”
Likely to be flanked by Conor Elliott
at the strong-side linebacker spot and
Adrian Kaiser at weak-side, Surla is
both excited and optimistic about the
Western defence in 2009 - despite the
loss of key players Vaughn Martin, Matt
Carapella, Andrew Bain, Jon Hood,
Corey Mcnair and Adam and Andrew
Hrytzak.
“People in the OUA and CIS will say
we are small, but we believe we are fast

and tought and physical. We have a
few big guys with Jerod McCrory who
tested well, he’s in the back up middle
linebacker spot right now.”
Surla also noted many other
freshman linebackers have stood out
in camp including Sean Blake, Marcus
Babic and Pavel Kruba.
“It’s a credit to our coaches. Mickey
(Donovan) has brought in some really
good kids,” Surla said.
“We’ve stepped up to the challenge
after losing Vaughn Martin,” Surla
said. “Losing Vaughn we miss a big
presence in the middle. But we have
Mike Van Praet who was very good as
a freshman and Chris Greaves who is
coming off an injury and played very
well last year for us on the (defensive)
line.”
While the climate continues to
remain hot with great recruiting
classes to surround him with other
talented players, Surla stands out.
The middle linebacker has steadily
improved statistically in his two
seasons with Western - he could easily
have been named the OUA’s defensive
player of the year in 2008, finishing
with 46 total tackles, 6th in OUA in
2008, and a league-high 6.5 sacks.
He improved on his 43 total tackles
from 2007’s freshman season which
put him 10th overall in the OUA.
“It’s been step by step for us,” Surla
said. “My first year we won the Yates
Cup and then last year we won the
Mitchell Bowl. And we experienced the
Vanier Cup.”
“Losing in the Vanier was a bit of a
disappointment but just to get there is
a good thing,” he added.“
Surla is confident that experience
will translate into a positive.
“We’re continuing to head in the
right direction.”. said Surla who
aspires to play in the CFL eventually
and is draft eligible in 2011.
“The Vanier Cup is my personal
goal,” Surla said. “I look at team-first
goals as my priority. Anything else that
comes along with that is a bonus, but
without the Vanier Cup is irrelevant.”
“This year, we want to win it all and
hoist that trophy.”

After just one year
at The University of
Western Ontario, kicker/
punter Darryl Wheeler
knows he made the right
decision to come to play football
for the Mustangs.
The Faculty of Health Sciences
student, who was trying out for the
Winnipeg Blue Bombers in the summer
of 2008, chose to come to Western to
build on his education.
A transfer from utah State, the
Hamilton, Ont., native wanted to
keep doors open athletically and
academically.
“Coming here from Utah State, there
was an adjustment - the schedule and
timing and preparation,” Wheeler said.
“I enjoyed my first year here. I got to
know my profs and the faculty and
they are pretty understanding of the
challenge football players and studentatheletes
in general face.”
“If you take the time to introduce
yourself at the start of the year it
helps to build that relationship and
understanding.”
Wheeler said it would have been
very difficult to juggle athletics and
academics if not for the great support
staff in place at the university.
“with us advancing to the Vanier Cup
last season, I told them (my professors)
I would be missing time in class and
they were very accommodating to
allow us to still put in the time and do
the work but to reschedule things like
exams.”
“I’m lucky especially in my field that
a lot of the profs are athletes and some
competed at university themselves,
and they understand the impact
athletics makes at the university.”
Wheeler, 26, had a banner year,
despite a lack of recognition from the
OUA football community.

punting, Wheeler was a reliable
contributor, coming in at a very timely
point in the Mustangs recruiting
cycle with former kicker/punter
Derek Schiavone gone to the CFL’s
Edmonton Eskimos.
“I couldn’t have picked a better
school to play football,” Wheeler
said. “The athletics, the academics,
the coaches, my teammates - I feel
so accepted here and I’m not just a
football player. People care about
everything and I feel appreciated.
“Western is the only place for me.”
Eventually Wheeler said he wants to
work in medical field, or maybe teach
or even coach.
He spent part of his off-season
coaching minor football to kickers in
the region.
“It’s something
I really enjoy and
it allowed me to
stay in London
and see more of the
city and experience i t s
culture,” Wheeler said. “I love it here. I
want to settle down here and one day
raise a family in London.”
He now has his sights set on
returning to the Vanier Cup and
winning it. He said he’ll continue to do
whatever it takes to help the team.
“The goal is to always get better. I
feel I’m the best person at my position
in Canada and I want to prove I am.”
Wheeler said
“But the bottom line is to be Vanier
Cup champions and to be back in the
Vanier Cup and hoist that trophy.”

tackle contributed Team Ontario’s Canada
Cup winning season.
Despite the graduation of tackle Richard
Zulys (property of Toronto Argonauts),
Western will still be deep at the offensive
position in large part to the return of Pollari
and guard/centre Andy Rady (London,
Ont.), who is enrolled in Law School.
“Pollari has taken that next step,” said
head coach Greg Marshall. “Our offensive
line is close to where we need to be. We
had a solid nucleus on the offensive line
when I arrived here but we were not there
(at the best) yet.”
“We need to protect Michael better. You
have to be able to outplay your opponent
off the ball,” Marshall said. “And you have
to be able to protect your quarterback.
You never know what can happen to
skilled players. If you can run a balanced
offence it gives the quarterback time to
pass. That’s where we need to be better.”
Pollari, who won Lineman of the Year
for Centennial in 2004 and in his District,
will work with new lineman coach Chris
Bertoia, who comes home to London,
Ont., after spending time at St. Francis
Xavier.
The son of Frank and Joan, brother to
Carolyn, Pollari said he aspires to be a
teacher – he is studying education now
after completing a criminology degree at
Western in 2008.

Western Mustangs, Mike Van Praet is
back for another exciting year of
football.
Van Praet graduated
from Mother Teresa
and served as the
captain of the Spartans
football team. He was
also a captain with the
London Falcons and
played for this team
for four years. He
was recruited to
Western as
one of the top
lineman in
the nation.
Van Praet’s
first year with
the team was
a memorable one.
He describes his experience
as something very special,
particularly as a first-year
starter. He enjoyed playing in
front of thousands of people
and putting his all into each

Mustangs in 2008 based on his dedication
and discipline.
His best piece of advice for rookie players
is to work hard. He explains that the
physical and mental commitment to the
program can be tough, but every effort is
worth it. Van Praet took on the challenge
in his first year and committed himself to
tireless practices and intense work-outs.
His dedication to off-season training even,
will help him to perform his best in 2009.
As a player at Western, he understands
the importance of learning from his
coaches and fellow teammates. The
more a player can take in from those with
tremendous experience, the better off the
player will be.
Finally, Van Praet enjoys being with the
team day-in and day-out. The ongoing
contact has developed a sense of
community and family among team
members and any others involved. Van
Praet values his on-field relationships as
well as those back home; He receives
constant support and encouragement
from his father and mother, Jeff and
Alison. His father in fact, has never missed

Since its inception in 1967, five Western
Mustangs have been named the Hec
Crighton winner, an award handed out
annually to the top university football
player in the country.
Quarterback Jamie Bone won the Hec
Crighton following his senior year, 1978,
in which he finished at Western as the
all-time passing yards leader. (A record
since surpassed by Chris Hessel and
Michael O’Brien.) Previously, he led
the Mustangs to back-to-back Vanier
Cups in 1976 and 1977. A draft pick of
the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, he later
earned a tryout with the Dallas Cowboys.
In 1989, he started a successful career
Hec Crighton Award
with TSN as an analyst.
In 1980, Greg Marshall grabbed the
prize after rushing, at the time, the
most yards in a season by a Mustang
running back. Leaving Western as the
all-time career rushing yards leader,
Marshall was a member of two Yates
Cup championship teams and went
on to have an exceptional career with
the Edmonton Eskimos, winning the
Grey Cup in 1982. As head coach of
the McMaster Marauders, Marshall
led the team to four straight Yates Cup
championships (2000-03) and in 2004
he was named head coach of the
Hamilton Tiger-Cats.
Blake Marshall won the Hec Crighton
in 1986 after he ran for 986 yards on
116 carries in leading Western to a
win at the Atlantic Bowl. His yardage
for a season, and a career, broke
the records previously set by his brother,
Greg. A first round draft pick of the
Edmonton Eskimos in 1987, he followed
with an illustrious run with the team,
winning Grey Cups in 1987 and 1993
and being named a four-time CFL All-
Canadian (1989-1992).
Tim Tindale, a running back for
Western from 1990 to 1993, played
for the Buffalo Bills from 1995 to
1997. Tindale is the only Mustang to
be named the Hec Crighton winner,
as the top university football player in
the country, twice (1991 and 1993).
Tindale retired as the Western’s all-time
leading career rushing yards leader,
passing both Marshalls along the way.
(A record since surpassed by Sean
Reade and Scott Crawley.)
Andy Fantuz, the all-time Mustang and
CIS receiving leader with 4,123 yards
and 41 touchdowns played at Western
from 2002 - 2005 winning the Hec
Crighton in 2005.

LONDON, Ont. - The Western
Mustangs returned as the Yates Cup
champions for the second consecutive
year with a 31-17 victory over the Ottawa
Gee-Gees on Nov. 8 at TD Waterhouse
Stadium.
Itís the 28th championship the men’s
football team has secured in the Yates
Cup’s 101-year history.
Quarterback Michael Faulds (Eden
Mills, Ont.) earned his second straight
Yates Cup MVP honour, winning the
Dalt White Trophy.
After the win, hundreds of the 5,480
fans in attendance at TD Waterhouse
Stadium swarmed to centre field,
surrounding Western’s
championship team in a sea of
purple and white.
Faulds carried his team to the win
on a very difficult day for Western’s
usually prolific offence. Western only
accumulated 147 rushing yards, 52 of
those earned by Faulds himself, against
a powerful Ottawa defence.
Many of Faulds’ rushing plays were a
result of the large amount of pressure
Ottawa put on the Mustangs’ offensive
line, frequently collapsing the pocket
around the Western pivot.
Despite this, Faulds still completed
15-of-29 attempts for 201 yards and a
touchdown, with no interceptions. While

sacked twice and rushed many times, he
threw the ball with pinpoint accuracy and
showed poise, maturity and leadership.
Western started the scoring in a
fairly uncharacteristic fashion, gaining
two points on an

Western running back Ryan Tremblay
(London, Ont.), who pinned Ottawa on
its own six-yard line.

Entering his fifth and
final season, quarterback
Michael Faulds has
one more mission to
accomplish as a Mustang:
winning the Vanier Cup.
Bearss led his team with just 23 yards
on five attempts, a tribute to Western’s
stifling run defence.
Western would score again on a oneyard
touchdown run by Nathan Riva
(Lasalle, Ont.) with 7:10 to go in the first
quarter.
Riva’s second touchdown of the day
would put Western up 16-0. Once again,
he scored on a one-yard run.
Western benefitted from poorly timed
Ottawa penalties for pass interference
and an offside call that negated a
turnover on downs after a failed thirddown
gamble by Western.
Discipline was an issue for Ottawa
throughout the game, as the Gee-Gees
were flagged 15 times for 120 yards.
Late in the second quarter Western
gambled on a fake punt - the ball was
direct-snapped to defensive back Matt
Carapella (London, Ont.) who rushed
15 yards for the first down.
Despite these heroics, a sack on the
following play by Prokipchuk would force
a third-down situation that Western could
not convert on, and they settled for three
points after a 24-yard Darryl Wheeler
(Hamilton, Ont.) field goal.
Western now held a commanding 19-0
lead.
Ottawa would finally score 27:03
into the game When Josh Sacobie
(Fredericton, N.B.) threw to Cyril Adjeitey
(Ghana) for a 23-yard score.
Western would convert on another 24yard
Wheeler field goal before the half to
push the tally to 22-7 at the half.
The Mustangs defence took over in
the second half. The western offense
managed one more scoring drive in the
rest of the game, culminating in a 32yard
Faulds pass to receiver Zach Bull
(Port Colborne, Ont.) on a skinny post
route that resulted in Western’s final
touchdown.
An intentional safety gave Western the
31-7 lead, but with 6:42 remaining in the
game, Sacobie connected with receiver
Ron Kelly (Sault Ste Marie, Ont.) for a
touchdown. The two-point conversion
pass to Ivan Burungi was a success to
make the score was 31-15
Needing two touchdowns with a pair of
two-point conversions, though, it was too
late for Ottawa to mount a comeback.
Ottawa’s defenCe forced a late safety,
putting the score to 31-17.
Sacobie would finish the day with
30 completions on 55 attempts,
344 yards, two touchdowns,
and two interceptions.
With the win, Western
advanced to the Mitchell Bowl,
national semifinal, against the
Saint Mary’s Huskies on Sunday,
Nov. 16 at TD Waterhouse

In May, 2009, the Western Mustangs
hosted the East-West Bowl and five
Mustangs participated:

Western has had a storied tradition in
football that emanates from the campus
every fall. Winning a new record 27th
Yates Cup title last November in Guelph,
Western became the province’s best
football school through history.
The team has also won six national
titles in 1994, 1989, 1977, 1976, 1974
and 1971.
With winning records against 16
schools nationally, only three schools
Mustangs History
have better overall records against the
Mustangs through history. Western has
won almost three quarters of the games
played at home - whether at J.W. Little
Stadium or at TD Waterhouse Stadium,
the Mustangs current home.
Nine OUA MVP honours have been
bestowed on Western football players,
while five Mustangs have won the
Hec Crighton Trophy as the nation’s
top football player (Jamie Bone, Greg
Marshall, Blake
Marshall, Tim Tindale twice and Andy
Fantuz).
Darwin Semotiuk (1976) and Larry
Haylor (1990, 1998) have twice won the
CIS coach of the year award, the Frank
Tindall Trophy, while the pair also

Western Mustangs
Marching Band
The Western Mustangs Marching Band is the
award-winning marching and pep band for The
University of Western Ontario. It was started in
1938 by music faculty alumnus Don Wright (for
whom the faculty is now named), and it has
thrived since then into the band of today.
The band is comprised of students from first to
fourth year from every faculty on campus, and
marches under the musical direction of Jamie
Bird.

Cheerleaders
The Western Mustangs cheerleaders are the
Canadian intercollegiate cheerleading dynasty,
winning all but one national cheerleading
championship.
This is the cheeleading team’s 80th anniversary
after first taking to the football field to cheer on
teh Mustnags upon their formation and entry into
the Senior Intercollegiate Football League.
Coached by David-Lee Tracey - or just “Trace”
to those who know him - the team has won 23
of the 24 national championships and captures
titles and various North American championships
each year against the top U.S. schools.

Dance Pack
In their inaugural season, the Mustangs Dance
Pack won they lyrical dance event at the 2008
Rhythm and Dance university and college
competition at the University of Waterloo and
placed second in two others, jazz and hip hop.
Nine other teams competed including Humber
College, York, Ryerson, Toronto, Ottawa,
Huron College, Wilfrid Laurier, UOIT and host
Waterloo.

LONDON, Ont. - The London sports
community has lost a great friend with
the death of Bob Gage at University
Hospital on Sunday July 12. Known as
the dean of amateur sports reporters in
Canada, “Scoop” covered the Western
Mustangs teams throughout his 33-year
career with The London Free Press.
On Tuesday July 7, Gage was taken
to University Hospital in London with
a broken hip and there developed
pneumonia. He died Sunday morning at
the age of 89.
“There are but a handful of people,
historically, who have made significant,
lasting professional and personal
contributions to athletics,” said Acting
Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences,
Kevin Wamsley. “Bob Gage is one of
them. Through his work as a journalist,
Bob became a walking history of
Canadian sport and, more particularly,
of Western athletics. He knew everyone
and their accomplishments and, even
in his retirement, Bob was a permanent
fixture at Western events. His personal
contributions will enable future
generations of Western student-athletes
to achieve their goals. Our community
at Western will miss him.”

Bob “Scoop” Gage
to The University of Western Ontario to
support the construction of the Michael
Kirkley Training Centre at the J.W. Little
Building at TD Waterhouse Stadium.
The Bob Gage Weight Room in the
Centre was named in his honour.
“Scoop” met thousands of studentathletes
and coaches from Western
in his career, and touched as many
lives - through his stories and perhaps
more importantly, the friendships he
developed throughout his career.
Gage championed amateur
sport in the region as a reporter and
advocate of student-athletes and their
accomplishments. It became a lifelong
mission to act in their interest, he said in
2008, and he continued to give back in
his retired life.
“I feel very honoured,” Gage said.
“I can sit back and see other people
being honoured and recognized. It’s
very rewarding for me to be able to give
back.”
Gage, who also has several awards
for athletes at Western named in his
honour, would have it no other way.
“Western, that’s where my heart is,”
Gage said.
It’s said Gage never missed a
Mustangs men’s home basketball
game. Fittingly, he was honoured as
an inaugural member of the Mustangs
Backcourt Club men’s basketball Hall
of Fame to compliment his entry to
other societies and halls of fame in the
community.
Gage often wrote about the gradual
changes of the student-athlete
demographic at Western. He authored
Mustang Tales, a 157-page chronicle of
the history of Mustangs men’s athletics
at Western.
“I felt an impetus to record the history
of Western and share my knowledge
of the Mustangs,” Gage said. “I’m so
pleased I did it.”
Gage said in 2008 he would love to
be able to continue
to help university
athletics for the rest of
his life.
“I owe a lot to
Western,” Gage said.
“I owe a lot to every
athlete, every coach,
for all they did for
me. I made so many
friends through my
career.”
“I guess I
always felt home
at Western,” Gage
added. “Sports
have never
dwindled here.
Western sport is
always at the top.
Allen Philbrick
A mentor to hundreds of Mustang football
players over the years, Allen Philbrick has
reached legendary status when it comes
to Western Mustangs athletics. Philbrick,
best known as “Albert”, has been a fixture
at Western since he arrived in 1965. Sadly,
Philbrick passed away recently at the age
of 93. During his time supporting, he acted
as a faculty advisor for countless players,
teaching the student-athletes listening skills
and discipline.
Philbrick’s legendary status was created
one day in the fall of 1971, when he was out
for a run. At the halftime of a Mustangs football
game, he went down onto the field and stood
with then head coach Frank Costentino. The
I’m just glad I’ve been able to be such
a big part of it.”
Gage said he believes sport makes
people more complete and more likely
to succeed in life.
“I believe in athletics and what it can
do for people,” Gage said. “I suppose
sports are always different, always new.
That’s why it was always such a joy
for me to cover athletes through their
careers.”
A funeral will be held on Wednesday
July 15 at 10 a.m. at St. Mary’s Church in
London at Lyle and York Streets. A tribute
will follow in the church hall at 11 a.m.

After they scored a touchdown to gain the
lead, Philbrick leaned over to Costentino
and said, “Well, I better be going.” He ran
around the track after that touchdown before
leaving the stadium and continued on his way.
Philbrick remembered that no one really paid
attention that day, but they soon would.
Throughout the season, he came out
to every game, running victory laps after
every Mustangs touchdown to maintain the
momentum of the crowd.
The Mustangs won a national championship
the year he began running the laps. Itís
become a part of Mustang tradition and a
legacy for years to come.

PLAYInG In THE nFL
Former Western Mustangs defensive
lineman Vaughn Martin was drafted in
the fourth round of the National Football
League collegiate draft in April by the
San Diego Chargers, becoming the
first CIS underclassman to be drafted
in history.
Martin, a versatlie defensive lineman
with three years of CIS eligibility
remaining, later signed a four-year
contract with the Chargers.
He started two straight preseason
games at defensive end against Seattle
and defending Super Bowl participants
Arizona.
Martin looked in place during his NFL
debut against the Seahawks on Aug. 15
in a 20-14 loss.
With defensive ends Jacques Cesaire
and Ryon Bingham out with injury, Martin
was a starter and played three quarters
recording three tackles, including one
for a loss.
The Jamaican-born native of London,
Ontario, helped Western win the Yates
Cup provincial title and Mitchell Bowl
national semifinal in 2008.
He becomes the fourth Mustang to
reach the NFL level following offensive
stars Tim Tindale and Tyrone Williams,
and Dave Sparenberg. Tindale and
Williams starred at Buffalo and Dallas
respectively. Martin is the highest-ever
Mustang drafted in NFL history, the third
highest CIS player to be drafted.

The University of Western Ontario is an

football.
The football program at Western is
laced with pride and enthusiasm, and
those involved come together like family.
The coaches are dedicated to their team
and every aspect of the game. The
players work hard to gain the respect
of fellow teammates, coaches and most
of all, fans. The fans can be described
easily in one word: intense.
Mustang football is a way of life;
it has its own culture.
Within this culture, players face
a stringent schedule involving
regular practices, workout and
training regimes and of course,
keeping up with their studies.
Given the strong reputation of the
university, players are expected
to be dedicated to the successful
completion of their degrees.
The Academic Support
Program consists of a variety
of requirements which must
be adhered to by each and
every player. It was developed
and carried out by the team’s
Academic Coach, Don
Hayden. He is proud of the
accomplishments of the team
year after year.
“The dedicated studentathletes
on our championship
team collectively do better
academically than the general
student population,” said
Academic Feature
Hayden. “Our academic support
program has been put in place to help
ensure that they continue to do as well in
the classroom as they do on the field.”
Freshmen players must attend
mandatory Monday night study sessions
conducted by Hayden and Nick
Whitehead of Oxford Learning. A strong
package of materials has been created
which covers essay writing, use of the
library system, effective note taking,
strategies for exam writing and time
management. The sessions also involve
guest presenters who are experts in
each topic covered. Freshmen players
have responded positively to this weekly
requirement and find each session
very useful in getting to know their new
school and a new way of learning.
Beyond the study sessions, all players
sign an academic contract. Within this
contract, Hayden monitors academic
progress by having each player provide
interim marks for their courses. This
includes marks for mid-terms, essays
and lab reports which may help to
identify any potential problems which
would inhibit a player from adhering
to their academic requirements as a
football player.
“It’s easy to fall behind in school,
especially with the intense football
schedule,” said Mike Van Praet, a
second-year Social Science student
and returning defensive lineman for the
Mustangs. “But the Academic Support
Program is there to make sure all
players are completing their courses to
the best of their abilities.”
Furthermore, players are assigned
Faculty mentors based on their field
of study. The mentors act as an
additional support system for the team
and although they are not academic
counsellors, they will provide academic
support where needed and refer players
to counsellors if necessary. The Faculty
mentors include:

Hayden provides many other services
through the Academic Support
Program. The travelling schedule of the
football team can at times conflict with
scheduled mid-terms. In order to keep
players from falling behind, Hayden is
qualified to proctor exams while on the
road. He can also arrange for personal
tutors where necessary and he meets
with each player individually to
further discuss their progress
and any other concerns or
questions the players may
have.
The credibility of the
Academic Support Program
for the Mustangs football team
can be attributed to the results;
Players get more done during
the season because they are
forced to manage their time
more effectively.
Joining the football program
at Western is a tremendous
commitment, one that requires
dedication, hard-work and
sacrifice. The coaches and
mentors involved are there
to help every step of the way,
but ultimately it is up to each
player to meet the demanding
requirements. Those up for
the challenge will prosper in
the football program.

An Opportunity
All students face rising tuition
costs. Mustang student-athletes,
however, have added expenses
associated with competition. This,
coupled with the intense time
commitment of long seasons and yearround
training, often prevents studentathletes
from spending significant time
at part-time jobs.
Recently, the Ontario University
Athletics (OUA) approved a new motion
on granting athletic financial awards.
Beginning in the 2007-08 season,
varsity teams are now able to award a
maximum of $3,500 per year to eligible
student-athletes. To qualify, entering
student athletes must:
• have a minimum academic average
of 80 per cent;
• to continue being eligible, current
team members must maintain an
average of 70 percent in subsequent
years.
In the past, student-athletes with
high academic averages had no athletic
award opportunities in Ontario.

Student-Athletes
Our Commitment
In 2007, Western committed
$700,000 in seed money for athletic
scholarships. This seed funding is
expendable and is scheduled to end in
2010-11.
Our goal is to raise $5 million over the
next four years, creating an endowment
fund that will generate annual income in
support of Mustang student-athletes in
perpetuity.
Athletic Scholarships will help
recipients with the cost of education,
allow Western to compete with other CIS
schools in recruiting the best studentathletes,
and allow us to continue
building strong, competitive teams.

TD WATERHOUSE STADIUM
The state-of-the-art TD Waterhouse
Stadium, which opened in 2000, is
conveniently located on the beautiful
campus of The University of Western
Ontario, in London, Ontario.
Situated near the corner of Western
and Sarnia Roads, the
stadium a CFL regulation-size
infill turf playing surface, with
a 2” rubberized e-layer, and
is bordered by an eight-lane,
400-metre mondo track.
I.C. Improvements, based out
of Stoney Creek, Ont., installed
new turf in the summer of 2007,
replacing the old AstroTurf.
Western’s new turf product
causes less burn on legs and
is better for mobility and less
prone to causing injury than
other turf products. The infill turf
integrates rubber granules into
the surface with longer fibres.
Erle says this makes it more like
sand, providing more give and
better safety for ankles and feet.
The new turf meets FIFA 1
Star standards and features two
purple end-zones with white
lettering – the north end-zone
reading “Western” and the south
end-zone reading “Mustangs”.
The 1000 lumens lighting is
perfect for television coverage and
for evening events. Spacious change
rooms with shower facilities, equipment,
training and referee rooms, address most
of the needs of the athletes, and seating
is available for over 8,000 spectators,
with concession and vending services
also provided.
The Press Box is outfitted for TV, voice
and print media. Western enjoys the
largest comprehensive collegiate sports
package on cable television with its
partner Rogers TV 13 in London. CHRW
Radio, 94.9 FM in London and online at
www.chrwradio.com, has been the
Facilities
official voice of the Mustangs for 30
years.
The fully licenced Labatt Lounge offers
the perfect vantage point to watch
the game. The lounge area, which
can be booked for special events,
accommodates 120 guests and the
floor to ceiling windows provide a great
view of the north end of the playing
field. Smaller meeting rooms are also
available.
Home to the Western Mustangs’
football team, the facility was proud to
host to the 2001 Canada Games, the
PanAm Field Hockey Championships,
the World Transplant Games,
the Ontario Paralympic Championships
and the 2006 World Field Lacrosse
Championships.
Additions to the J.W. Little Building,
which is situated
at the stadium’s entrance, include the
2006 completion of the state-of-the-art
Michael Kirkley Training Centre.
The Mustangs football team has its own
dressing room with stalls for the entire
squad on the first

WEIGHT ROOM
The Michael Kirkley Training Centre was
opened in 2006 with funds generated by
the Champions Club following the tragic
death of Mustang football alumnus and
star running back Michael Kirkely. A
former teammate of current head coach
Greg Marshall, Kirkley was an enormous
supporter of Western football following
his graduation.
An initiative of the Champions Club,
Kirkley and Jeff Fischer, a former
Mustang coach,
envisioned the
implementation of
three key goals for
the football program:
developing the Adopta-Player
program,
an annual Mustang
football Wall of
Champions dinner
and the creation of
the training centre.
A tremendously
important component
to recruiting, the
$1.6-million training
centre, which
features a 720
square-metre (8,000
square foot) second
floor with state-ofthe-art
strength
and conditioning
equipment, is his
legacy and will
benefit Mustang
Athletics in years
to come.
A graduate from 1985, Michael Kirkley’s
love and commitment to Western only
increased with time. With the generous
support of our private sector partners,
The Michael Kirkley Mustang Training
Centre will stand as a lasting legacy in
honour of a gifted athlete, a devoted
family man and one of Western’s
greatest supporters. According to
family friends, the Centre is “a perfect
celebration of what Michael was and
what he wanted.
This past off-season Bob “Scoop”
Gage, a former London Free Press
amateur sports reporter and the muse
of Mustang Athletics for 33 years,
donated $57,000 to help complete
the construction of the Michael Kirkley
Training Centre.

CHAMPIOnS CLUB
The Champions Club was formed
in Spring, 2002, and its mission is to
“support and enhance the championship
tradition of Mustang football.”
The club is an independent operation
that works closely with the football
program.
The club’s first initiatives included:
- Through the Adopt-A-Player Progam,
helping to subsidize out-of-pocket player
expenses with all revenues generated
through the program being expended
on the players;
- To recognize significant contributions
to Mustangs Football through the
Mustang Football Wall of Champions;
and
- The construction of the Michael
Kirkley Training Centre, a dedicated
training facility to enhance the physical
conditioning of Western football players
We have been very successful in our
first three initiatives, generating more
than $2.4 million dollars for the various
programs. In 2007, the Champions Club
added:

experience for our players between third
and fourth year; and

which provides ongoing scholarships for

Adopt-a-Player Program
The Adopt-A-Player Program was
established in 2002 with 70 sponsors
supporting the Western Mustangs
football team.
The level of involvement has grown
each year with over 200 now contributing
to the program – starting with just over
100 in 2003.
The unavoidable costs assumed by
football players increase steadily and
they require support.
The cost to adopt a player is $375.00

The purpose of the Champions’ Club
summer work internship program is
to increase the attractiveness of the
football program to potential recruits
and their parents, to enrich the football
experience of existing players as they
prepare for their career after school and
to continue to deliver on the objectives
of the Champions Club.
Eligible players will be exposed to a
summer work experience that would not
typically be available to most students.
The program is designed to help attract
the best recruits to Western by showing
them the commitment both of the school
and the Champions Club to Mustang
football. The player’s marketability
for employment after school will be
enhanced through the internship
experience.
The placement helps the player with
their academics as they become
interested in the internship line of
work and are dedicated to getting the
marks required to enter that field.
There is an advantage to any
employer. They will have access
to a select pool of talent that has
demonstrated the ability to play at an
elite level of University football, while
maintaining the academic standards
required of a student-athlete at Western.
The employer will have the opportunity
to see the quality of the player’s work
firsthand, and this could assist in any
future job openings they may have.
The target employer is one who will be
able to provide an experience that will
enhance a player’s future marketability
and development.
The program is looking for jobs that
are outside of the typical summer work
placements most students would find.
We are looking for unique opportunities
that potential recruits would recognize as
internship Program
desirable and supportive of their careers
after graduation. It needs to be seen
as an important part of their decisionmaking
process when choosing a school
and football program.
Any player that participates will be an
undergraduate beyond second year
that is in good standing. The selection
process would shortlist players that
meet the criteria with a selection
panel finalizing a list of applicants they
believe are suitable for the opportunity.
The list would be sent to the company
for final review and selection of the
player. We are trying to build a pool of
companies that are able to offer summer
employment when there is a good fit
between the available players and the
company.
Adam Hrytzak worked at Ricoh Canada
in the internship
program, and he was a valuable addition
to the Ricoh team. He learned about
the technology industry from the initial
sales call, to creating presentations and
finalizing the business opportunity. He
was exposed to all levels of contacts
within different businesses and has
to be able to communicate effectively
with them. He worked closely with the
existing team, the Branch Manager and
the Vice President to gain insight on how
the business works and functions.
Adam presented himself in a
professional manner and represents
Ricoh well. He brings a strong work
ethic and dedication to the job along
with a very personable approach. His
good work has resulted in new sales for
the branch. Everyone enjoys working
with him and having him around.
Ricoh Canada Inc. said they would not
hesitate to hire him as a full-time Ricoh
employee after graduation.
Hrytzak said he really enjoyed his
experience.
“Taking my education outside of the
classroom with Ricoh Canada Inc. has
allowed me to gain real world experience
that will not only assist in my studies but
also in my future career decisions,” he
said. “Throughout the summer internship
program, I was required to exercise the
knowledge that I had gained during
my time at The University of Western
Ontario. This program also challenged
me to develop new skill and information
that will only aid my development and
readiness for the business world.”

The Western Mustangs football team
and the Champions Club established
the Mustang Football Wall of Champions
in May, 2003. Few football teams at any
level can claim a more distinguished
tradition of high achievement and glory
than Mustang football. That proud

About Wall of
Champions Dinner
tradition is the result of the players,
coaches and support people who have
graced the university since football was
established. The criterion for election
to the Wall of Champions is simple:
significant contributions to Mustang
Football. Each year, a nomination panel
of eight individuals accepts nominations
up to and including the final game of
the season. At that time, 25 names
of players, coaches and builders are
forwarded to the selection committee,
consisting of more than 25 alumni,
coaches, past inductees and local
sports media.
About the Champions Club
In the Spring of 2002, Michael Kirkley,
a former star Mustang running back,
and Jeff Fischer, a member of the
coaching staff for 10 seasons, created
the Champions Club – a group of alumni
and friends dedicated to raising support
for Mustangs Football. The mission
of the club is to “support and enhance
the Championship tradition of Mustang
Football.” The Club has worked directly
with the football coaching staff to
enhance the program and has focused
on creating successful tools for the
programís success such as the Adopta-Player
Program, The Michael Kirkley
Centre and the Wall of Champions. They
also organize an annual golf tournament
and other social functions.
