healthy livinG Fags or swag? Smokers choice for No Smoking Day More than 750,000 smokers are expected to ‘swap fags for swag’ on No Smoking Day on Wednesday 13 March 2013. The British Heart Foundation hopes that by showing smokers the swag-style luxuries they could afford, such as trips to the cinema, meals out or the holiday of a lifetime for the cost of their usual cigarettes, smokers will be more likely to try and quit for good. More than 10 million men and women in the UK smoke but about two thirds say they want to quit With the average smoker saving £7 a day, £49 a week, £210 a month and £2,555 a year if they do ditch the cigarettes for good, it’s easy to see the potential for some lifestyle indulgencies instead. Doireann Maddock, Senior Cardiac Nurse at the BHF, said: “Everyone loves a little luxury, but if you smoke, you could probably only afford the treats you’re after for you and your family if you quit. That’s why we’re asking all smokers to ‘swap fags for swag’ on No Smoking Day and think about what else they might prefer to spend their money on.” “Whether it’s buying your child’s birthday presents, a family trip to a theme park or a complete house makeover, the financial gain from quitting is one of the biggest motivating factors for anyone who wants to kick the habit for good. But whether it’s your health or wealth that’s the incentive, we’re here to help and support you at every turn.” The No Smoking Day campaign, which is now in its 30th year, is set to launch on Wednesday 27 February 2013 to give smokers time to prepare their minds, seek advice or get any quitting aids they might need to quit on No Smoking Day itself. Last year No Smoking Day helped more than 760,000 people quit smoking and inspired another 1.5 million to seek out information to help them quit in future.
