World Trade Center Transportation Hub World Trade Center Transportation Hub is an ambitious project commissioned by the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey to the well-known architect Santiago Calatrava so as to replace the old transportation hub destroyed in the 9/11 attacks. A focus point whose functional objective will be to significantly improve the connections with Lower Manhattan: the PATH trains and underground lines (1, 9, N and R) will converge there. Besides, it will also serve as a nexus to link the Towers 1-4, Liberty Place, Memorial Site and the World Financial Center. In order to hugely simplify that which might look like a confused maze of underground passages, Calatrava has projected the transport hub so that it can be perceived as a series of distinct spaces but with unifying characteristics, such as colour and materials: steel, concrete, stone and glass prevail. Concerning lighting, the architect has given great importance to natural light, as a powerful symbol of hope and vitality. The World Trade Center Transportation Hub is scheduled to be completed at the beginning of 2015. It will be another of the different reshaping projects developed at Ground Zero to promote again this New York district. / SANTIAGO CALATRAVA To summarize in this page the work of this Valencian architect and sculptor specialized in big structures would be virtually impossible. For this reason, we will only highlight his Prince of Asturias Award for the Arts, his National Architecture Award and his American Institute of Architects Gold Medal.
