SCC Jazz Band qualifi es for the Iowa Jazz Championships On Saturday, December 3rd, the South Central Calhoun Jazz Band competed at the North Central Iowa Bandmaster’s District Jazz Contest in Webster City. SCC won Class 2A, which qualifi es them for the Iowa Jazz Championships in Des Moines on Tuesday, April 10th. This is the 16th consecutive year that a Jazz Band directed by Mr. Plummer has won this contest. Other bands in Class 1A that placed were: 2nd - Prairie Valley, 3rd - Ft. Dodge St. Edmund’s, 4th - Emmetsburg, 5th - Manson/NW Webster. The Jazz Band played 3 songs: Blues in the Closet by Oscar Pettiford, Prelude to a Kiss by Duke Ellington, and I Snore, You Drive by Victor Lopez. The following received soloists awards: Zack Stewart - Bari Sax, Andrew VanHulzen - Bari Sax, Nicholas Collison - Tenor Sax, Zach Ludwig - Trombone, Taylor Davis - Bass and Megan Collison - Flute. Smith made the quick transition from a Stock Car to top point standings for rookie drivers in the ButlerBuilt North Central Region for IMCA Modifi eds. “I’ve never won any kind of rookie of the year award,” Smith said. “I really wanted to run for national rookie but I rolled my car in June and that set us back a bit.” He’d get his career fi rst win in the class in just his third night out. Smith fi nished the season with four checkers and 14 top fi ve fi nishes in 37 starts, with a victory in the JR Motorsports Hawkeye Dirt Tour and track titles at Algona Raceway and Buena Vista Raceway to his credit. “The biggest difference for me this year was making adjustments on the car. That’s huge with a Modifi ed,” he said. “There are so many fi ne-tuning things you can do. You could have a fourth place car but one adjustment could make you the fi rst place car. I’m learning how to make those adjustments.” Overcoming an unanticipated John Reis, AuD change in the track surface, Smith qualifi ed for the main event at the IMCA Speedway Motors Super Nationals fueled by Cenex.
