Girls Basketball Results The 7A girls basketball team hosted East Sac at Lake City and lost a tough battle 19-22. After falling behind 12-22 the girls made a run in the 4th quarter but couldn’t get some last second shots to fall before the buzzer sounded. Allison Birks led the team in scoring with 12 points, Emily Henkenius 3, Aliyah Taylor 2, and Kelsi Carlson 2 points. The 8th grade team then took the floor and struggled against the East Sac zone. The final score 20-29. Scoring went as follows: Taylor Hepp 8, Cali Miller 5, Jordan Hepp 4, and 3 points for Shelby Kingery. Coaches comments “we played them a lot tougher than we did last year, we had some good looks but couldn’t get them to drop” A combined 7 and 8 grade team traveled to Laurens and came home with a victory. The score was 28- 25. Scoring for the Titans was Cali Miller with 14 points, Lexus Doster with 6, Jordan Ludwig 3, Hannah VanMeter 2, Marae Erkenbrack 2, and Mady Dick with 1 point. Coaches comments “Mady came in off the bench and did a great job defensively shutting down their star player.” A two quarter game was then played for the 7th graders and they also won. Scoring points in that game was Naia Goodman with 4 points, Lindsey Sweeney 2 points, and Vanessa Squire 2 points. On December 15th the Titans hosted MNW. The 7A team lost to a good Cougar team13-44. Scoring was as follows Allison Birks with 10 points, Kelsi Carlson 2 points and Myk Schoop 1 point. The 8A team came to play and pulled off the upset 27-22! Cali Miller continues to shoot the ball well and finished with 10 points, Shelby Kingery is settling down and getting more in control with running the offense. She finished with 8 points. Taylor Hepp had a solid game with 7 points and Jadyn Khommanyvong came off the bench to contribute 2 points. Coaches comments “This was a big win for these girls. December 21, 2011 Sports/Local News The Graphic-Advocate 11 SMCH Steps Up Safety with Joint Meeting (Lake City, IA) It’s not common for visitors or patients to be unruly at Stewart Memorial Community Hospital (SMCH) or McCrary Rost Clinic, but when the situation arises, the hospital staff and local law enforcement are prepared to deal with the circumstances. “Our hospital is proactive when it comes to the safety of our patients, visitors and employees. Today we took that one step further with a joint meeting of our safety committee and area law enforcement,” said Leah Marxen, Chief Executive Officer. The SMCH safety committee has been in place for over thirty years. The committee meets each month to find solutions to current and potential safety concerns. “We have addressed a variety of security and safety issues over the years and we are now working on expanding our partnership with area law enforcement in the event we need their expertise,” said Bob Wirtz, Director of Facilities and chair of the SMCH Safety Committee. Wirtz said recent safety improvements at the hospital include a security badge system for all employees, and additional security cameras. “We added eight additional security cameras in our hallways this year and will add another eight in 2012,” Wirtz noted. During a tour of the hospital and clinic, area law enforcement, which included representatives from the Lake City Police Department, Calhoun County Sheriffs office, Rockwell City Police Department, Iowa State Patrol and Calhoun County Emergency Management, received a first hand look at all of the security measures SMCH has in place. “Whenever you bring together It sounds like science fiction, but local Iowa State University 4-H Youth Development staff and volunteers are using advanced eyescanning technology on cattle, sheep, and goats as part of the animal identification system for 4-H and FFA livestock projects. “Retinal scans are part of a growing technological trend in animal identification,” said Mike Anderson, ISU Extension 4-H Youth Development Livestock Specialist. Anderson trained fifteen 4-H/FFA volunteers and staff on Thursday, December 15, at the ISU Allee Research Farm in Newell. Those trained represented 4-H clubs, fairboards, and livestock superintendents from five Northwest Iowa counties. “The retinal image machine painlessly flashes a beam of light into the eyeball and records the pattern of veins in the eye,” says Anderson. Each retina, whether bovine or human, is unique and a scan is considered one of the most accurate forms of identification he said. The ISU Extension 4-H retinal image training is part of an effort that started six years ago to improve the 4-H Livestock Animal Identification System, according to ISUEO 4-H Youth Field Specialist, Carol Ehlers. Anderson taught using retinal scanners (valued at $3,000 each that are not much bigger than a small video camera) to record the physical ear tag as well as photographing both the left and right eye of each species. Historically, 4-H and FFA exhibitors have been required to submit hair samples for DNA analysis to serve as a permanent means of identification. “DNA analysis is costly and requires a complex laboratory procedure that takes time,” according to Anderson. “Also, hair samples have been lost in transit. For 4-H members taking livestock to the Iowa State Fair, the Iowa 4-H program found that the retinal scans proved a near-perfect animal ID technology because of its speed and accuracy,” Anderson said. As SMCH moves forward with several security measures, Wirtz says they will be consulting with local law enforcement. “It’s a great benefit to have input from our local experts as we address new safety measures to better serve our patients, visitors and employees in our hospital, clinics and pharmacies,” said Wirtz. 4-H Volunteers Train for High-Tech Retinal Imaging A two-hour high-tech retinal imaging training taught 15 volunteers at the ISU Newell Allee Research Farm on December 15. Volunteers used retinal scanners to take a picture of each animal’s eye, making an image that is downloaded into a computer database recording the day, time, and global positioning satellite coordinate of the location. This provides a permanent animal livestock identification. Calhoun County 4-H’ers Complete Iowa Cattlemen Foundation Youth Beef Team Orientation Sponsored by the Calhoun County Cattlemen and ISU Extension & Outreach-Calhoun County 4-H Youth Program, local 4-H’ers were among 14 Northwest Iowa youth completing Iowa Cattlemen Foundation Beef Youth Team Orientation on Saturday, December 10, at Cherokee and Sac City. The unique training prepares young people engaged in raising livestock to tell their story about modern beef production. Iowa Program Coordinator, Krista Frazee, taught youth and adults attending the two-hour session the power of telling their own story explaining their commitment to raising healthy animals and how to answer questions ranging from beef nutrition to environmental stewardship. ISUE 4-H Youth Program Specialist, Carol Ehlers, highlighted the opportunities and resources through 4-H to support Beef Youth Team presentations. Local 4-H members who completed the regional training and developed a plan for five activities in 2012 to tell their own story include Local 4-H members completed the Iowa Cattlemen Foundation’s Beef Youth Team Orientation with Krista Frazee preparing them to tell their story about modern beef production. The Iowa Cattlemen’s Foundation Youth Beef Team is open to all youth, ages 12 to 18, who are interested in promoting the beef industry. A volunteer adult will serve as a contact person and coach for the group and will be supported by the local County Cattlemen’s Association and ISU Extension and Outreach. At the Holstein Ridgeview Tournament on Dec. 17, SCC was the top team among the six teams participating, earning the third tournament title for the season. During the week, two titan wrestlers won their 100 th match. Senior Tate Klocke recorded his 100th career win at home on Dec. 13. Junior Chase Goodman recorded his 100th career win at Holstein on Dec. 17.
