Mercy Foundation’s mission is to raise funds and community 

awareness for the works of the Sisters of Mercy, Auburn Regional 

Community in the areas of healthcare, education, affordable 

housing, and care for the poor and the elderly in the greater 

Sacramento region.

2006 Year in Review 

There was much to celebrate in 2006, and this annual report to the 

community is a sharing of the activities and milestones that occurred 

through your support. A financial “snapshot” of Mercy Foundation is 

included along with pages devoted to you, our generous donors. We 

hope, as you read the following pages, you feel a sense of pride for 

being a partner with the Sisters of Mercy. 

The Sisters of Mercy were overjoyed 

with the completion of the renovation to 

their Auburn Regional campus and the 

large crowd that gathered to dedicate the 

campus last fall. “A Promise Kept” donors 

were recognized, and nearly 200 guests 

attended the celebration. The campaign 

goal of $3 million is nearly complete, thanks 

to the generosity of many donors and other 

friends of Mercy. Now, the Sisters of Mercy 

who are enjoying their retirement can 

live among the peace, tranquility and new 

amenities that the newly renovated 

campus offers.

More than 250 friends of Mercy gathered 

for the groundbreaking of the Mercy 

Hospital of Folsom Cummings Emergency 

Pavilion expansion in October 2006. After 

three years of planning and fundraising, the 

campaign to support this project reached 

its goal of $5 million! As a result of this 

newly renovated and expanded emergency 

department, hundreds more patients can 

be served, reducing wait times by 60%. 

Accompanied by many local Sisters of 

Mercy and Lloyd Dean, President and CEO 

of Catholic Healthcare West, the spirit of 

Mercy was felt as 36 friends of Mercy traveled 

to Ireland on a pilgrimage to trace the 

steps of the first Sisters of Mercy. The group 

visited the first House of Mercy, Mercy International 

Centre on Baggot Street in Dublin 

and visited many Sisters of Mercy throughout 

the Emerald Isle.

I am stronger for their courage. I am wiser for their words. 

I am lifted by their longing for a fair and brighter future. 

I am grateful for their vision, for their toiling on this Earth. 

We are standing on the shoulders of the ones who came before us. 

They are saints and they are humans, they are angels, they are friends. 

We can see beyond the struggles and the troubles and the challenge, 

When we know that by our efforts things will be better in the end. 

They lift me higher than I could ever fl y! 

Carrying my burdens away. 

Imagine our world if they hadn’t tried, 

We wouldn’t be here celebrating today. 

I am standing on the shoulders of the ones who came before me. 

I am honored by their passion for our liberty. 

I will stand a little taller, I will work a little longer, 

And my shoulders will be there to hold the ones who follow me. 

Dear Friends of Mercy, 

The Sisters of Mercy have received generous community support in the greater Sacramento 

region for the works of Mercy since 1857. As we commemorate the 150 th anniversary of 

the Sisters’ arrival in Sacramento in 2007, it gives me great pause to refl ect on all we have 

accomplished together. Coming to Sacramento as educators and the area’s fi rst visiting 

nurses, the Sisters of Mercy have worked alongside friends, like you, to partner in meeting 

the many needs that have arisen over these 150 years. 

This spirit of collaboration and gratitude for all of you today and those who came 

before us, reminds me of the lyric on the previous page by Joyce Johnson Rouse entitled, 

“Standing on the Shoulders.” 

Thank you for all that you have done yesterday, today and will do tomorrow to support and 

“shoulder” all of the works of Mercy in healthcare, education, affordable housing, and care for 

those who are poor and marginalized in the greater Sacramento region. It is because of your 

generosity and dedication that we as Sisters of Mercy stand a little taller and work a little longer 

knowing that together we are making a difference. It is a privilege working alongside each 

of you in an effort to make our world a better place for those we serve. In the words of our 

California founder, Mary Baptist Russell, “You must not now imagine all is done. On the 

contrary you are only now beginning.”

Chair of the Board 

At Mercy we use words like faith, fi delity and stewardship as part 

of our every day life. We use these words not to impress but to 

express the deep level of commitment shown by you, our trusted 

friends and donors, to Mercy, and our obligation to you to use 

your gifts of time, talent and treasure wisely and effi ciently. 

The standard defi nition of these words helps us to understand just how powerful the 

relationship is between you and Mercy: 

Faith loyalty or allegiance to a cause or a person; complete confi dence in a person or 

plan; a strong belief in a supernatural power or powers that control human destiny. Many 

of you who give to Mercy do not personally know a Sister of Mercy, many of you are not 

Catholic, and some of you have never been to a Mercy hospital, housing community or 

received education by the Sisters of Mercy. Yet, you have faith that what you are doing is 

right, that people’s lives will somehow be better because you chose to give – your faith 

in Mercy will never be taken lightly. 

Fidelity faithfulness to something to which one is bound by pledge or duty; strict 

and continuing faithfulness to an obligation, trust, or duty; stresses zeal and service 

amounting to self-dedication. None of you are “required” to support Mercy in fulfi lling 

its mission of caring, and it is exactly that selfl ess commitment that is so inspirational 

to those who, on a daily basis, express your fi delity through their work-life at Mercy. 

Stewardship the offi ce, duties, and obligations of a steward; the careful and 

responsible management of something entrusted to one’s care. Several of you who 

choose to give to Mercy do not know the Mercy Foundation staff or Board of Trustees 

personally, yet you trust that the funds you give will be managed with care and used 

wisely to promote healing, dignity and justice. 

On behalf of the 28 members of the Mercy Foundation Board of Trustees, the nearly 

100 members of our affi liated Community Councils and the 13 Mercy Foundation staff 

members, thank you for your faith and fi delity in giving. You have our promise to always 

be responsible and trusted stewards of your funds. Should you have questions about

The Sisters of Mercy are the cornerstone of Mercy Foundation’s 

efforts. Their dedication to improving lives throughout our community 

has made an enduring mark on the Sacramento area that 

will continue for many years to come. The following are summaries 

of the works of the Sisters of Mercy where your donations make 

a lasting difference. 

Education was the original need that 

brought the Sisters of Mercy to Sacramento. 

Just three days after disembarking a river 

steamer in Old Sacramento in 1857, the 

Sisters established a school, which had 65 

students and swelled in a few short months 

to 120 students. Education remains a priority 

among the works of Mercy today through 

programs like the Mercy Education Resource 

Center (which fills a gap in our community 

by providing specialized services for students 

with learning and/or emotional disabilities) 

and Cristo Rey High School (a private faithbased, 

college preparatory high school that 

offers quality, school-to-work education to 

economically disadvantaged students, which 

opened in Sacramento in August 2006). 

Care for the Elderly One of the 

most difficult challenges our society faces 

is providing a safe, dignified environment 

where low-income seniors can be vital members 

of a community. Allowing people to live 

independently with security and dignity as 

they age is the goal of the many Mercy residential 

communities for the elderly. Russell 

Manor and Mercy McMahon Terrace provide 

such an environment. Mercy Lifeline is another 

program that provides a continuous 

response system that can monitor high-risk 

and elderly patients in their homes, 24 hours 

a day, seven days a week. 

Care for the Poor is at the heart of 

the Sisters’ mission. Throughout the years, 

the name “Mercy” has been associated with 

helping to feed the hungry, offering support 

for the homeless, providing decent, affordable 

housing and healthcare for low-income 

families and providing charity care for 

those in need. 

Healthcare Mercy General Hospital and 

Mercy San Juan Medical Center were named 

two of the nation’s 100 Top Hospitals, by 

Solucient, a health information company 

that tracks hospital performance. They were 

among only four hospitals in California to 

receive this designation. Mercy is known for 

its centers of excellence in cardiovascular 

care, neuro services, neonatal intensive care 

units, trauma care, and much more. Mercy 

is very proud of the quality of care provided 

to our community, while being committed to 

serving those in need. Many of those served 

by Mercy face impossible choices — paying 

rent or seeking medical care, for example — 

as they struggle to balance their daily needs 

while working in low-wage jobs or living on 

fixed incomes. Others, unemployed and 

homeless, have no source of healthcare. 

Building healthy communities for all residents 

is a core mission for the Mercy family 

of hospitals, with a special focus on those

who are unable to access primary medical 

services for basic needs. Mercy’s clinics at 

five locations, MercyClinic Norwood, Mercy- 

Clinic Loaves & Fishes, Folsom Family Clinic, 

White Rock Family Clinic and MercyClinic 

North Highlands, provide primary healthcare 

for nearly 20,000 patients each year, 

all of whom are low-income, uninsured 

or underinsured. 

Housing Mercy Housing’s mission is to 

ensure housing justice for people who are 

economically poor. By developing, operating 

and financing quality, affordable service- 

enriched housing, Mercy Housing changes 

the lives of individuals and families, and 

revitalizes distressed neighborhoods. 

Folsom Gardens, Kennedy Estates, Mercy 

Village Folsom, Russell Manor and St. Francis 

Terrace are just a few examples of Mercy’s 

commitment to affordable housing in the 

greater Sacramento area.

Every year I am inspired by the many gifts that are given to the works of Mercy. You may be 

interested to know that 1,941 individuals, corporations and foundations chose to give 9,344 

gifts to the works of Mercy in 2006. 

By giving to Mercy, you change lives. Whether your gift is designated to a major capital project 

like the Cummings Emergency Pavilion in Folsom, the “A Promise Kept” campaign to renovate 

the Sisters’ of Mercy Auburn Regional Campus, the Alex G. Spanos Heart Center campaign 

to build a new home for the west’s premiere cardiovascular program at Mercy General Hospital, 

the Comforts of Home campaign to renovate oncology rooms at Mercy San Juan, restricted 

to a service-intensive work of Mercy like the Mercy Education Resource Center, Children’s 

Bereavement Art Group, Mercy Hospice or the Mercy Perinatal Recovery Network, be assured 

that your gift makes a difference. 

I’d also like to acknowledge the local Mercy hospitals for their support. It is because of a
