Wayne Prejean
South Central Louisiana native, Wayne Prejean began his bow hunting career
over four decades ago. To say he has spent “time in a tree” is an understatement.
With over 300 big game animals taken with archery gear, including Elk, Turkey,
Wild Hogs, Whitetail & Mule deer, Wayne has gained a reputation for consistently
filling his tags. Over the years he has developed the uncanny ability to place his
stands in just the right location. In his words “Picking the right tree is an art form”.
His first 100 hundred whitetail deer were taken shooting bare bow hunting the
public WMA’s of Louisiana. That experience, insight and patience is what has
made him so successful taking trophy class bucks hunting the Midwest.
As Wayne’s knowledge and field experience increased, so did his demands on
his equipment. Utilizing his education in design, he
went to the drawing board, developing complete tree
stand systems with field functionality being the prime
objective. Catering primarily to the bow hunter, these
designs featured light weight portability, speed of
setup, versatility and amazing stability. Add plug-in
attachments for the multi-season hunter and you have
a product with truly unique capabilities. Features such
as The Accessory Port System that allows the hunter to
quickly convert their hanging stand from bow hunting
to gun hunting mode and the Super Cam® Leverage
Lock system that offers more platform stability than
any portable tree stand on the market are truly revolutionary.
The next problem Wayne addressed was gaining access to elevation
quickly. His “Out of the Box” thinking produced the independent portable ladder/
stick concept. No one believed that a miniature ladder/stick could be attached
to a tree trunk by a single strap/rope and securely support a hunter. The award
winning Rapid Rails truly give the hunter speed, stability and versatility for climbing
even irregular shaped trees. The Non-Typical Hanging Stand/Rapid Rails combo
consistently allowed the hunter to position himself in a location that increased
his shooting opportunities.
Taking climbing tree stands to another level, Wayne developed the Multi-
Position Rotating Padded Rail System (used for climbing, shooting rest & safety
rail), Climbing Cinch Straps (eliminates the need for foot straps & stabilizes
the platform and climbing aid at elevation), Quick Detachable Adjustable Height
Padded Seat and Climbing Pivot Arms for the most aggressive bite available
on a climbing tree stand. When you utilize the design process of “Form follows
Function” the final product is truly unique. Not a copy of a copy, thus the name
“NON-TYPICAL”. Not only did they look different, but most importantly they
performed at a much higher level than the competition. Many have tried to
duplicate these unique products and their features and may look a little Non-
Typical, but none have been successful duplicating the field performance.
Wayne began production of his Non-Typical tree stands in 1990 and partnered
with Ameristep in 2004. His most recent
work in the ladder stand category has
produced two award winning designs.
The Team Realtree “Sky Scrapper” and
the portable Non-Typical “Z Lounge”
ladder stands.
To add to Wayne’s impressive resume
he has also been heavily involved
with sharing his knowledge with other
hunters and educating them on the tricks of the trade. From early in his career
as a tournament shooter winning numerous state championships, to promoting
the National Bowhunter Education Program as a Master Instructor, to assisting
in organizing Archery Clubs, to owning and operating an archery pro-shop, to
outdoor product designer and now hunting video producer and seminar speaker.
His passion and knowledge of the sport and the outdoors has made him one of
the most successful bow hunters in the country.
