Panicos Chrysanthou
Verket ”A Detail in Cyprus” (En detalj i Cypern) är ett vackert, sorgset
“My cinematographic work at Avesta Art is based
on Cyprus’s war experiences I want to show the
common humanity of both Greek Cypriots and
Turkish Cypriots At the same time it includes my
criticism of fanaticism and nationalism ”
“For centuries people had lived in harmony
together on Cyprus The war and partition of
the country compelled whole villages to tear up
their roots and move to other areas An inflexible
boundary was created Families who had been
neighbours, friends and workmates for generations
were suddenly required to see each other as
enemies All postal and telecommunications were
severed Meetings were forbidden Contact should
on no account take place Where’s the logic? How
adaptable are people? The questions are many ”
Panicos Chrysanthou was born on Cyprus He
has a degree in literature and philosophy from
Athens University and has worked his whole life as
a director and producer He has also worked as a
journalist and film critic and is today coordinator of
the Cypriot film archives
His work A Detail in Cyprus is a beautiful,
melancholy but still hopeful portrait of Cyprus as it
once was and as it would have been had not war
destroyed so much of its ancient culture The film is
filled with poesy, history and human compassion
Our wall portrays the boundary that separates
people on Cyprus from one another At a secret
meeting held in a hotel in the buffer zone controlled
by the UN, Panicos Chrysanthou, who is a Greek
Cypriot, and his Turkish Cypriot colleague, film maker
Verket ”Our wall” (Vår mur) skildrar gränsen som skiljer människorna
of the No Man’s Land) och här får vi möta ett redan uppdelat Cypern
Niyazi Kizilyurek, start a journey that allows us to
meet people, united by the same history and same
pain but now consigned to a divided Cyprus A third
film, Akamas, brings questions about ethnicity and
religion to a head A young couple of lovers share
both their formative years and their great love – and
are now put under enormous pressure to separate
Panicos Chrysanthou also displays a series of
photographs taken between 1976 and the present
time The theme is Stories of No Man’s Land, and
here we are confronted by a Cyprus that is already
divided and the remains of the life that once was,
peoples’ daily stories and places destroyed by the
war Even in this melancholia there is a meditative
effect Maybe thoughts about change and
reconciliation are conceived here
