PILOT POPULATION
ensurinG saFeTy and protecting
airports mean little if there are no pilots to
fly. And ensuring a robust pilot population
means taking action on many fronts—from
attracting newcomers into aviation to
helping students complete their training to
keeping certificated pilots in the air longer.
That’s why the AOPA Foundation is
working on many fronts to support longterm
efforts to grow the pilot population.
In 2011, the AOPA Foundation awarded its
first flight training scholarship. A second
scholarship will be awarded in 2012, and
the AOPA Foundation hopes to make this
an ongoing part of its work.
In addition, the AOPA Foundation in 2011 provided a
$125,000 grant to AOPA for its work on the Flight Training
Student Retention Initiative, a revolutionary program aimed
at halting the alarming 70-percent student dropout rate
and developing a more robust and effective flight training
infrastructure.
The AOPA Foundation has also been actively engaged in the
development of the MyFlightTraining website, which provides
personalized guidance and information to students at every
stage of the training process.
The number of active pilots in the united States has been
declining for decades, and there is no quick fix for such a
longstanding problem. But with your ongoing support and
commitment we can and must change this trend.
