Ruby Stewart appreciates the simple things in life. She loves a good story, spending time 

with her family, digging around in the garden and reeling in a big fish. 

Growing up in Somerset County she learned to fish from her mother. She recalls, “I 

remember the first fish I caught. It was a sun-perch. I brought it home but wouldn’t let 

Mom clean it until Daddy came home to show him. I was about five.” 

Ruby has created a tradition, and has passed along her love of fishing to all her children, 

grandchildren and great-grandchildren. In total, there are 15 fishermen in the family. 

Her daughter, Judy Vaughan, remembers how proud her son, then 4-years-old, was 

when Ruby took him fishing. “He was real proud of them, because he caught them 

with Mommom,” said Judy. 

For many years, if Ruby wasn’t fishing you could find her crabbing or clamming. 

She loves a big garden and canning her vegetables. She likes to read and play 

Scrabble, too. 

She has had to set aside some of these hobbies, as Ruby is legally blind. It’s a bit 

harder for her to get out fishing and enjoy the things she loves.

Her spirit remains bright, however, as she jokes with her Hospice Aide Lindsay Johnson, that she wants to spend her final time 

focused on living instead of dying. And hopefully, she’ll spend that with her family, Goin’ Fishin’.

Reeling in the simple things in life! 

Doris Ludicke, a professionally trained, board certified music therapist 

(MT-BC) with Coastal Hospice, uses live music in her care for people 

living with advanced illnesses. Research shows that music therapy 

promotes relaxation. Doris plays a wood flute, lap harp and a Bodhran 

(Celtic drum). In addition to her music therapy, Doris is a Registered 

Nurse and has a Master’s degree in pastoral counseling.

TV Morning Show Helps Raise Funds 

Many thanks to the WMDT-TV morning show team for their help promoting 

our Angel Appeal campaign. For seven weeks Coastal Hospice was in the news 

each morning. Staff, volunteers and patients shared their hospice stories each

Q. What is the difference between coma, vegetative 

state, and brain death? 

A. These medical terms all describe serious neurologic conditions, are commonly 

confused, and have very different meanings. Understanding these processes can be 

helpful in making health care decisions for critically ill family members. 

Coma represents a state of unconsciousness. Technically even the normal process of 

sleep is a form of coma. Many different diseases can cause coma and the prognosis 

is quite variable. Some patients will completely recover, while others will die of this 

underlying disease. 

A vegetative state is more serious. It is best described as awake but not aware. The 

longer a vegetative state persists, the less chance there is for meaningful neurologic 

recovery. If the condition lasts for more than three months, it is called a persistent 

vegetative state and offers no reasonable probability of recovery. Some of these patients 

have survived for years utilizing medically-administered hydration and nutrition 

albeit with a very poor quality of life. 

Brain death represents the complete loss of all neurologic activity. It is diagnosed by 

repeat and careful neurologic examinations often supplemented by blood flow studies 

and brain wave (EEG) tests. It is universally accepted as death throughout the United 

States. Once the diagnosis is made, life support will generally be withdrawn although 

temporary exceptions are sometimes made for organ donation or pregnancy.

Coastal Hospice began a new project that is 

so special. This project is the designing of 

Memory Bears. These precious bears are made 

with loving care by hospice volunteer Lettie 

Boggs for families of those whose loved ones 

were cared for by our hospice program. Each 

bear is unique because it is created from an 

article of clothing of the deceased patient that 

is selected and given to us by a loved one.

Judith Dorsey 

Ask our President or our office manager about Judith Dorsey 

and you’ll hear the same thing: “I learn something from 

her every day.” For this reason she received the “You Make 

a Difference” award from the Hospice and Palliative Care 

Network of Maryland. 

When Judith arrived to manage our inpatient center, she very 

quickly began to make a difference at Coastal Hospice. Her 

commitment to our patients and to excellent care radiated 

to the entire staff. More importantly, she brought a sense of 

grace. Now she is Director of Clinical Services and in every 

situation, Judith leads with kindness and encouragement. 

Today, staff members readily post thank-you notes to one 

another on the bulletin board. This trend began quietly with 

Judith, who not only posted notes, but, when she heard a 

compliment, urged the speaker to put it in writing and 

pin it up on the board. She understands the power of such 

demonstrations. 

She is an extraordinary and exemplary leader. Judith listens 

and is in the moment when anyone needs her help. When 

one of her staff brings Judith a question, she takes the time 

to focus exclusively on the question and the person asking 

it. Together, they do some research. Before long, they have a 

shared understanding of the issues involved and have found a 

clear path to the answer. 

Every day we learn from Judith Dorsey. We learn to see hospice 

care from the patient’s perspective; we learn that a good laugh 

at the end of the day does wonders. And we learn that, if 

we look for it, we can find the wisdom within to dedicate 

ourselves to the mission of Coastal Hospice.

Palliative Care Program 

Offers Outpatient Clinic for Cancer Patients 

Starting in 2004, Coastal Hospice and 

Peninsula Regional Medical Center 

partnered to improve the care of patients 

with chronic or life-limiting illnesses 

by providing Palliative Care services to 

patients at the Medical Center. Many 

people with chronic or life threatening 

illnesses suffer needlessly with pain or 

discomfort. 

The goal of palliative care is the prevention 

and relief of disease symptoms and 

treatment side effects. This special kind 

of care treats the whole person and family 

helping in every way to promote healing 

and maximize quality of life. 

Palliative care consults are now available 

for any hospital patient or outpatient 

being treated at the Richard C. Henson 

Cancer Institute. The palliative care 

inpatient program continues to see those 

patients staying in the hospital that are 

more critically ill.

Each person’s plan of care is directed 

by the patient and family according to 

their wishes, beliefs and values. Experts 

work with the patient and their doctor to 

coordinate the best communication and 

patient satisfaction. 

This program succeeds because of a team 

of health professionals. Our team is 

made up of doctors, nurses, counselors, 

chaplains and volunteers. Each has 

special skills, and all together this staff 

can do more than one working alone. 

Palliative care is different from hospice 

care for several reasons. Hospice is a type 

of palliative care appropriate for those at 

the end of life. Hospice provides comfort 

for patients who have a serious illness 

that has persisted despite treatment. 

PalliativeCare 

Can be provided anytime during 

a serious illness and regardless of 

prognosis. 

Is more flexible than hospice in terms 

of treatment goals and is available to 

patients who are seeking or receiving 

treatments to cure the illness or go into 

remission. 

May be short or long term. 

Patients with serious illness, especially 

those who are coping with physical, 

emotional or spiritual pain or facing 

complex care decisions can benefit from 

palliative care. Even those planning for 

future treatments can benefit. Palliative 

care helps patients and families manage 

symptoms, such as pain, nausea, anxiety 

or shortness of breath.

Celebrate Life 

Ornament 

This holiday season, Coastal 

Hospice introduced a new way to 

remember loved ones. The Angel 

ornament, designed by Dana Simson 

of Chesapeake East, in Salisbury, 

is slightly abstract: a teal heart is 

embraced by white wings. A gold loop 

curls over the top for hanging. On the 

back of each is the Coastal Hospice 

trademark sailboat, with a space on 

which Ms. Simson will paint the name 

of a loved one for the buyer. 

“We sold about 50 during the 

holidays,” says Coastal Hospice 

Director of Development Maureen 

McNeill. “It was kind of nice to talk 

with the people who called to order 

them. Each had a different reason for 

wanting this memorial ornament.” 

Ms. McNeill added that the ornaments 

will be offered throughout the year. 

They are about 4” by 4” and will sell 

for $35, including sales tax, shipping 

and handling. Each one arrives in a 

gift box with a card that reads, “When 

someone you love becomes a memory, 

that memory becomes a treasure.”

of Coastal Hospice 

The Somerset County Friends of 

Coastal Hospice are planning a garden 

party to Celebrate Spring, Sunday, 

April 19 from 2 to 5 p.m. at Clifton, 

the historic home of Kathryn and Bill 

Niskanen. 

With a generous porch overlooking 

the water, Clifton is the ideal spot to 

welcome the season among the lilacs. 

The home sits at the end of a winding 

country lane, surrounded by gardens 

and forest. Indoors, the décor features 

antique pieces, with artwork that 

creates a more contemporary feeling. 

Celebrate Spring chair Diana Barber 

says the event will hearken back to 

Coastal Hospice garden parties of years 

past, with guests enjoying light hors 

d’oeuvres, punch and wine. Although 

the party is designed to raise funds for 

Coastal Hospice, the Friends also hope 

to rekindle relationships in Somerset. 

Tickets will sell for $25.

Just in time for Mothers’ Day, 

Coastal Hospice is offering its annual 

Geranium Sale. Flyers will be mailed 

out in early March for red, white and 

pink flowering plants that will be ready 

for pick-up and planting the weekend 

of May 1. 

In planning last year’s sale, Geranium 

Sale chairman Ernie Matthews 

returned to supplier Donald Bennett, 

of Bennett’s Greenhouse, for plants 

that are healthier and more colorful 

than ever. The 4 ½” plants will be sold 

for $3.50 each, including sales tax. 

Geranium flyers, including the order 

form, will be mailed out to all local 

recipients of the Coastal Hospice
