A HABIT OF THE
CATHOLIC HEART
Are we ready to say
grace?‖ Many
religious people
pause before they eat
and pray. Christians
do this also. The
English word we
have for this prayer is
―grace‖—the same
word we use to speak
of the way God’s
love is given to us
freely, given without
any earning it on our part.
―Grace‖ comes easily from a Latin word, gratia, a word
many know from the close Spanish word, gracias. This
simple word is trying to get hold of what is best in the
human spirit. It is that spontaneous ―thanks‖ that is our
response to a kindness, some good word or deed with
which another person blesses us.
So at table we say grace, we give thanks. Hunger brings
us back to the table—even when there’s no table at all—
and before we take nourishment, we go hungry a moment
longer while we give thanks.
What is done before eating is just one tiny moment of
what’s the deepest Catholic habit. We want ―grace‖ all
the time, morning and night, even in hard times. We are a
―thanks saying‖ people. It comes with the territory.
We’re shaped in giving thanks by the obligation we have
to gather at the church’s table every Sunday and make
the eucharistic, the thanks giving, prayer before we feast
on the body and blood of the Lord.
We’re baptized to be Christ’s body giving God thanks all
the days of our life, being the voice of creation whether
we feel like it or not, whether the times are good or awful
(thanks can leave lots of room for lament and even—just
pray the psalms—some cursing now and then). This is
no easy ―Hey, thanks a lot!‖ It is rather the total thanks
of those who have been shaped by Christ’s passion and
death in God’s merciful love for the world.
3
COMMUNION
CALL
As early as the year
150, the martyr
Justin, in writing an
explanation of
Christian worship to
the Roman
authorities, described
the Sunday eucharist
pretty much as we
celebrate it today. At
the end of the
description, he notes
that ministers take the
eucharist from the Sunday assembly to those who were
unable to be present. Perhaps these included people who
were in prison for living according to the gospel, and
those whose work (Sunday was a work day back then)
kept them away. But almost certainly he meant the sick
and the infirm, and those who were otherwise
homebound. This is our ancient tradition: to love and
cherish and to keep connected with those members of
this community who cannot be with us on Sunday.
When illness or infirmity keeps you from the Sunday
assembly, ministers of communion will bring a word of
scripture and the body of Christ to you. Call the parish
office and we will set this up. The best time for this is
Sunday, when the minister can come straight from the
celebration of Mass. But other times can be arranged.
Don’t worry about fasting before receiving communion:
If you are able to, that’s fine. But because of your
condition, you are not obligated.
Sick or infirm, homebound or hospitalized, each baptized
person is nonetheless part of this parish, a member of the
body of Christ. So don’t be afraid that you’re being a
burden, and don’t think that we’re so busy we wouldn’t
have time for you. Regularly sharing in communion is
an important part of our life together as the church.
After the 9:OOAM Mass each Sunday, we will celebrate
the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick, for anyone
who has the need to receive this sacrament. This is meant
to include such concerns as upcoming diagnostic tests,
limitations of aging, anxiety, depression, undue stress,
addiction, etc. for all ages. Please gather in the pews at
the front of church and the priest will be with you
approximately 10 minutes after Mass is over.
Amazed and Afraid, The Revelation of God Become Man
St. Peter parish has the privilege of presenting a viewing of
CATHOLICISM – ―Amazed and Afraid, The Revelation of God
Become Man‖ - episode one of Father Robert Barron's 10-Part,
high definition epic documentary series illustrating the beauty of
the global Church. The presentation will be at 7:00PM on
Thursday, April 22nd, in the Deutschmann Room of Ursuline
Hall.
Father Barron is an acclaimed author and theologian from
Chicago, and has produced the series in conjunction with Mike
Leonard of the Today Show. The complete series is expected to
be issued in the fall of this year. The first episode records Father
Barron’s journey as he visits the mysterious sites and sacred
places of the land of Israel. From the lush region of ancient
Caeserea Philippi to the shores of the Sea of Galilee to the holy
city of Jerusalem and finally to the eternal city of Rome, Father
Barron will use his pilgrimage to illuminate and explain the
Catholic Faith’s conviction that Jesus of Nazareth is the promised
Messiah and the revelation of God become Man.
"'Catholicism' could well become one of the most significant
efforts ever to advance what John Paul II called 'The New
Evangelization.'"
FOOD PANTRY REMINDER (FR. GARY'S PARISH)
TODAY(4/18) is the last day to donate canned food to Sts. Teresa
& Bridget Food Pantry for the month of April. Please bring
donations to 319 E. Adams, place canned food on front porch.
The next delivery is on May 17th. Please bring canned food
four (4) days prior to the delivery day of May 17th.
For more info see article below. Any questions call 965-3390.
FR. GARY'S PANTRY NEEDS HELP!
"If you can't feed a hundred people, then feed just one."
-Mother Teresa
So much has been said and written about hunger and job loss. St.
Louis city pantries have experienced an increase of 35% of those
seeking food.
What can we do about it? Really, not too much individually, but
as a group, LET'S TRY! For each of us it's small, but together we
can make an impact on a few who need extra help.
After visiting with Fr. Gary Meier, former associate at St. Peter,
now pastor of Sts. Teresa & Bridget (located on Grand & N.
Market, St. Louis City), he explained how his parish and
community are in great need. They have a food pantry that serves
their area, open one day a week for 3 hours. Even though another
county parish supplies canned goods once a month, the high
demand keeps their shelves bare. They have had to reduce what
they're able to give to those who come for help to a bag that holds
just enough food for 2 meals.
THIS IS WHERE WE COME IN. By collecting canned goods
MONTHLY we can help make other peoples' lives better and
respond to Jesus' call to feed Him when He is hungry.
Donations are delivered on the 3rd Monday of every month.
Please bring canned food in plastic bags about 4 days prior to the
monthly delivery date (3rd Monday each month) to our home,
placing it on the front porch. A list of items needed and delivery
dates is located in The Gathering Area in the back of church.
Thank you for your support and generosity.
FREE FOUNTAIN OF YOUTH
It’s true! What is it? Regular Exercise. Regular exercise is the
one constant that seems to always be present when talking or
reading or studying how to remain healthy. Research has
confirmed this in Germany, Australia, England and of course here
in the USA. Regardless of body weight, physical activity
increases one’s chances of remaining healthy, both for men and
women.
Exercise is not just about weight control although it helps. It has
long been known that physical activity has beneficial effects on
numerous age-related conditions such as osteoporosis,
osteoarthritis, falls, cardiovascular diseases, some cancers,
diabetes mellitus, obesity, and decreased function. We know it
improves one’s mental outlook and sense of well-being. There are
recent studies that also point to prevention of mental deterioration
and cognitive impairment as a benefit of regular exercise.
One of the strongest predictors of ―unsuccessful aging‖ is
physical inactivity. In other words, physical inactivity speeds the
development and contributes to poor control of the above
mentioned problems, along with falls, fractures and especially
decreased physical functioning. It is also thought that physical
inactivity could be the root cause of many unnecessary and
premature admissions to long term care. In other words, physical
exercise is a primary aid in the prevention of late-life disability in
the areas of physical and mental impairment. If illness strikes, a
person who has been active very often recovers more quickly.
Even if one has been sedentary in the past, it is never too late to
begin. Just get an OK from your MD and begin slowly. Walking
with a friend is a good way to start. There are many local outdoor
trails and walking places. Mall walking is available at all malls;
just do it. One does not have to look very far to find exercise
classes, swim and dancing programs, bicycle, hiking, tennis
groups, golf, joining a gym, a large variety of different ways to
get moving. There are exercise programs designed to assist people
with arthritis, with heart problems, with osteoporosis, with joint
or walking problems.
If you exercise regularly you are aware of the benefits. You have
found the only well-known ―Fountain of Youth‖. All of us age.
We can’t stop that. Physical exercise, staying active, helps us to
be among those that remain healthy, strong and mentally fit as we
age. Even if one does not like exercising, it does give one the
energy and strength to do the things one does like to do.
There are not many reasons not to exercise regularly, only
excuses. Soooo…..if you are one of those ―excuse‖ people, get
moving. You won’t regret it. In fact, you may wind up feeling
much, much better.
CATHOLICS RETURNING HOME
Do you know someone who has left the Church? Most of us do
not have to look very far to find ―former Catholics‖ in our circle
of family and friends. Many of us are concerned about these
―former Catholics‖, however we don’t know how to help them.
Many of these ―former Catholics‖ are searching but how can we
help them find their way home?
As baptized practicing Catholics we have a precious gift of faith
and love from the Lord that needs to be shared with our nonpracticing
brothers and sisters. First we need to pray for them
and secondly we need to extend a personal invitation to them to
come home to the Catholic Church. Many are waiting for an
invitation to return. Many mistakenly think they are
excommunicated and are not welcome to return for a variety of
reasons.
Many ―former Catholics‖ carry a tremendous amount of guilt and
―misinformation‖ about the Church so they are afraid of
approaching the Church for fear of being rejected. So, YOU can
make a tremendous difference in someone’s life simply by
reaching out to them and telling them that we miss them and
would like them to come back home to our Church family.
Here at St. Peter we have a special program to help nonpracticing
Catholics return to the Church called Catholics
Returning Home. The next six-week series begins Wednesday
evening, April 21st at 7:30PM at my home at 319 East Adams.
