Fifth Sunday of Lent April 10, 2011
Experiencing Hunger…Lenten Fasting
In fasting we voluntarily accept a state of hunger which millions
of our brothers and sisters are forced to accept every day of their
often too brief lives. Fasting is thus a privileged entry into the
experience of a vast portion of the human family with whom we
seldom associate. In sharing their experience we come to an
understanding of their plight unavailable to those who simply
think about the sufferings of the poor. We might even say that
this experiential knowledge makes all other knowledge seem
like blindness about their world.
The season of Lent is a time of coming to fresh clarity about the
responsibilities which we accept at baptism. The man born
blind and given vision by Jesus almost immediately found
himself in trouble as a result of his new sight and its source
(remember last Sunday’s Gospel). Those who willingly accept
the hungers of the poor will undoubtedly be led to address the
needs of their brothers and sisters. Thus, the connection
between fasting and alms.
Fasting, however, is not just a way to raise social consciousness.
It is a trigger which brings us to new thankfulness for the gifts
God has given us and which Christ asks us to share that we
might embody our communion with all God’s children.
What does it feel like to be truly hungry and thirsty? Try fasting
for a week as was done years ago every day of Lent. Perhaps
this second half of Lent try making daily fasting a choice…it
would be good for the body and the soul.
Fasting Together…Lenten Fasting
Christians who have done any study of Paul know that ―flesh‖
for St. Paul is not the same as ―body‖. ―Flesh‖ is what keeps us
centered upon ourselves. When we are caught in old habits of
self-centeredness we often know how helpless we are, how dead
to the Spirit moving within us. Especially when such selfcenteredness
becomes or even borders on addiction we feel
trapped, imprisoned, entombed. In that state of need we cry out
for someone to set us free.
We are past the halfway mark of that time of year when we
declare in each Sunday’s rite of scrutiny that God has given us
one another as the Spirit-empowered instruments of liberation
for one another. No one does this work of freedom alone.
Fasting is a privileged kind of communion. It is a sharing of
need, a celebration of absence. This aspect of Catholic
spirituality is as necessary to our common life of faith as rests
are in music, as voids in sculpture, as silence in prayer.
Prayer is always joined to fasting. Fasting triggers in this season
a remembrance to pray for those being brought to the font, to
full communion or to reconciliation. Only after we have shared
the absence can we come with full hearts to the paschal banquet.
What can I do to fast in communion with others? Try eating a
poor person’s meal once a week for supper…soup and bread and
water.
Pilgrims, Palms, and Processions…Holy Week Approaches
Next Sunday, April 17 th , is Palm Sunday, and we will meet
outside of our normal place of worship to hear about how Jesus
entered Jerusalem in triumph before his passion, death, and
resurrection. Next Sunday, April 17 th , we will gather at 8:50 am.
on the parking lot next to Ursuline Hall. There we will bless
palm branches – branches carried by us as pilgrims.
3
And like the children of Jerusalem we will walk and sing in
procession to church. The gospel that we have been listening to
all year long has been leading us to this journey to Jerusalem, this
procession to the supper table, the cross and the tomb.
When we accept the palm branches next week, we promise to live
as pilgrims, to move through this life with and to Jesus. Like the
Israelites in the desert, we are only passing through. Like Christ
himself, we go about carrying good news, even when we walk the
way of tears. Come prepared next week to walk and sing together
at our 9:00 Mass as fellow travelers. We will walk behind our
cross to our holy altar table - - our Jerusalem, in our own
neighborhood of Kirkwood. And this procession will be practice
for an even more awesome journey that we will make in two
weeks - - the Easter Vigil’s procession to the font of baptism –
that place where we die to sin and rise in love to life everlasting.
From the “Hooray and Halleluia” Department…
I received word recently that Monica Macheca, a junior at St.
Joseph Academy and the daughter of Mary Kay Macheca, was
selected as one of thirty high school juniors to receive the
prestigious KMOX/ Southeast Missouri State Student of
Achievement Award. The recipients receive a scholarship to
Southeast Missouri State University in Cape Girardeau as well as
other prizes. It is an amazing honor to receive such an award and
we are very, very proud of Monica for this accomplishment. She
will be honored at a banquet in May. Oh, and by the way,
Monica is a 2008 graduate of St. Peter Grade School. ―Hooray
and Halleluia, Monica!‖
From the “Hidden Heroes and Heroines” Department…
On the second Tuesday of every month there is a gathering of
eleven very dedicated men and women of our parish. They meet
in Ursuline Hall and they put into practice the words of Jesus,
―whatever you do to the least of my brothers and sisters you do to
me.‖ They use as their role model for those words the life of St.
Vincent DePaul, the secondary patron saint of the Archdiocese of
St. Louis and the 13 th Century French saint of the poor who
helped those in need.
These fourteen men and women make up the St. Peter Conference
of the St. Vincent DePaul Society. Each month they help the
needy of our area in the true spirit of charity and good works with
food assistance and help with rent and utility bills. Theirs is a
ministry in the spirit of charity, justice, and respect for God’s
poor and it is a truly noble ministry. These faithful fourteen are:
Mary Strope (president), Joe Jaegers (treasurer), Fran O’Gorman
(secretary), Dave Augsburger, Rosemary Young, Tom Alferman,
Ed Johnston, Dennis and Linda Talley, Mike Rogers, Gene and
Nancy Iannotti, and Bill and Ina Perkins. And they are this
month’s “Hidden Heroes and Heroines.”
Thanks for your example to us and your amazing and wonderful
dedication.
Remember: Please come to Mass early enough not to disrupt.
Leave late enough not to insult. (The Mass does not end until
the final blessing). Worship reverently enough not to distract.
And dress proudly enough not to offend.
Yeh, Spring…finally! I’ll see you in church.
TREASURE REPORT AT-A-GLANCE
“We have to do the works of the one who sent me while it is day.”
John 9:4
It is important to note that Jesus uses the plural ―we: in this
statement and not the singular ―I‖. By saying, ―We have to do the
works…‖ Jesus commands all of us to participate in the work of
God. It is not enough for us to simply know God’s will. We
must also do God’s will, which means helping and serving others.
CALLING ALL PARISHIONERS - LENTEN SERVICE PROJECT
LET’S MAKE A DIFFERENCE!
St. Peter’s Boy Scout Troop 323 invites all parishioners to
participate in a parish wide service event to help clean up the
Washington Park Cemetery.
Washington Park Cemetery is overgrown with brush and debris
scattered across the property. A group of our Boy Scouts from
Troop 323 spent several hours cleaning up the cemetery last
month. They soon realized it would be a great opportunity for
our entire parish to work together to help make a difference for
our neighbors.
If you are considering doing service as part of your Lent please
consider joining the Boy Scouts:
Washington Park Cemetery Clean-up Project
Saturday April 16, 2011, 8 am – 4 pm
Organize your own transportation. Show up for all or some of the
day.
Check out our April trip – Guests are invited!
April 20 meeting; we are trying to line up
some members of the Kirkwood Children’s
Chorale to entertain us. They are checking
on it but we haven’t heard back from the
contact person yet. Check next week’s
bulletin. The Nominating Committee will present their report at
this meeting. Voting will be in May.
April 28 will be a day trip to Hannibal, MO. Non-members are
welcome to join us if there is room. The bus will leave the
Jefferson Street parking lot at 8:00AM and return to the parking
lot around 6:00M. The bus company will provide a 55-passanger
bus. We will start off at Mark Twain Museum and Becky
Thatcher’s home and follow this up with lunch around 1:00PM.
After lunch, we’ll take a narrated trolley tour around Hannibal
and then a riverboat trip down (and back) the Missouri River.
The trolley and steamboat each last about an hour and we will
depart from dockside around 4:00PM for the ride back to
Kirkwood.
Since we can accommodate more people on the larger bus, the
price of the entire trip (bus, lunch, museum, trolley and
steamboat) will cost each person between $50 (if we have 55
people) and $60 (if we only get 35 people). This price will
include all taxes and tips. We’ll plan on 35 people ($60) and give
a refund to each attendee on the bus if we get more. Make your
reservations with Charlene (314-966-4168) as soon as possible.
Reservations ($60) must be paid before they are confirmed. You
can put your check in an envelope addressed to ―50+ Club April
trip‖ and put it in the offering basket when you attend Mass.
May 4 will be the crowning of Mary in the church at 5:30PM,
followed by a social hour and pot luck dinner in the cafeteria. We
need several volunteers to set things up for the dinner. We will
announce the results of the survey that you will be turning in at
the April meeting, and also vote on the officers for the coming
year.
FR. GARY'S PANTRY NEEDS HELP!
HAPPY ANNIVERSARY St. Peter Parish!
One year ago St. Peter Parish began collecting food for Fr. Gary's
parish pantry at Sts. Teresa & Bridget. They serve those in St.
Louis City seeking food to feed themselves and their families.
During this past year they have experienced a large increase of
clients needing food.
WE WERE ABLE TO HELP.
St. Peter's donations made a dramatic impact on the amount
of food each client received on a weekly basis.
WE MADE A DIFFERENCE.
Thank you St. Peter parishioners for your faithful monthly
donations. We heard Jesus' call to feed Him when He was
hungry.
WE WILL CONTINUE TO SERVE HIM.
Our next date to deliver food is APRIL18th.
Thank you.
The Parish Library In Ursuline Hall
Have you ever wanted to say the rosary as a family but just
thought your kids were too little or would not pay attention?
Maybe you don't even remember how to say the rosary but might
if you were reminded. The Young Families group at St. Peter
Parish has decided to make saying the rosary a true family event!
We will meet in the Parish Library in Ursuline Hall the 4th
Monday of each month from 6:30-7:00PM and say the rosary
for a special intention. All you need to bring is a rosary and your
family. There is no need to worry that your kids might be loud or
not pay attention, all will add to the overall meaningful prayer our
families can offer.
BEYOND HOUSING NEWS
The St. Peter Beyond Housing Ministry has been busy planning
our spring activities. As part of Beyond Housing’s strategic
plan, they have initiated a collaborative effort aimed at
improving the quality of life for the children and families who
live in the Normandy School District. The effort is called
―24:1‖ – twenty four contiguous municipalities with one vision
of strong communities, engaged families and successful
children.
On Sunday, May 1st, look for us outside of church after all
Masses. We’ll be selling pretzels and collecting donations to be
used for uniforms and personal care items for homeless students
in the Normandy School District. You may be surprised to
learn that there are 130 homeless students currently enrolled in
the District. Your donations will help to supply the Resource
Rooms at each school where students can get the clothing and
other help they need. Please help us support these children.
Saturday, May 21st, we’ll be participating in ―Progress in
Bloom‖. Volunteers from St. Peter will join residents,
community leaders and other volunteer groups to conduct a
mass flower planting throughout the entire 24:1 area. The event
is scheduled for approximately 8 am until early afternoon (but
you are welcome to help for as many hours as you are
available). Breakfast and lunch will be provided.
For more information or to volunteer for this or any of our
ministry’s activities, contact Julie Bruns at 314-803-7855 or
Please remember the deceased and their loved ones in your
prayers:
