The Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time February 27, 2011
A Habit of the Catholic Heart…
I was at a restaurant recently with a group of people and when
the food arrived at the table we all prayed grace together. We
didn’t think too much about it but about five minutes later
someone stopped by our table and said that he was so amazed
and moved at the sight of all of us making the Sign of the Cross
and praying together before our meal he just had to come over
and tell us. You just never know, do you, how our actions affect
those around us. Folks notice what we do and what we
say….count on it and in today’s world we can make a difference
for someone’s day with just a Sign of the Cross and praying
grace at table.
Are we ready to say grace? Many religious people pause before
they eat and pray. Christians do this also, of course. The
English word we have for this prayer is “grace” – the same word
we use to speak of the way God’s love is given to us freely,
given without any earning it on our part.
“Grace” comes easily from a Latin word, gratia, a word many
know from the close Spanish word, gratias. This simple word is
trying to get hold of what is best in the human spirit. It is that
spontaneous “thanks” that is our response to a kindness some
good word or deed with which another person blesses us.
So at table we say grace, we give thanks. Hunger brings us back
to the table - -even when there’s no table at all – and before we
take nourishment, we go hungry a moment longer while we give
thanks.
What is done before eating is just one tiny moment of what’s the
deepest Catholic habit. We want “grace” all the time, morning
and night, even in hard times. We are a “thanks saying” people.
It comes with the territory. We’re shaped in giving thanks by
the obligation we have to gather at the church’s table every
Sunday and make the Eucharistic prayer, the thanks-giving
prayer, before we feast on the Body and Blood of the Lord.
We’re baptized to be Christ’s body giving God thanks all the
days of our life, being the voice of creation whether we feel like
it or not, whether the times are good or awful (thanks can leave
lots of room for lament and even – just pray the psalms – some
cursing now and then). This is no easy “Hey, thanks a lot!” It is
rather the total thanks of those who have been shaped by
Christ’s passion and death in God’s merciful love for the world.
So the next time you sit down to your favorite meal or even our
not so favorite one remember to give thanks and pray “grace.”
That action could be a real conversion moment for someone in
the next table or booth. One of the most enduring and endearing
prayers of “grace” comes to us from St. Polycarp, the Second
Century saint and martyr of the early Church and whose feast
day was today, February 23 rd , it is considered “Catholic Grace:”
“Bless us O Lord, for these thy gifts, which we are about to
receive, through they bounty through Christ our Lord. Amen.
Are We Ready for This Prayer?
Yes, I will lift up my heart. And I will give thanks and praise.
I’ll stay awake. I’ll listen to every word. I’ll sing every
acclamation and Amen. Thus I will put energy into praying the
Eucharistic Prayer at Mass on Sunday…our “grace” before the
3
Communion meal. I’ll bring to it every bit of life. I’ll remember
everything, especially the hard stuff (after all, at the center of this
prayer is a body to be broken for us, a covenant made in the blood
of Christ). As we pray in dialogue with the priest this most
ancient conversation…going back to the Second Century:
“The Lord be with you.” “And with you.”
“Lift up your hearts.” “ We have lifted them up to the Lord.”
“Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.” “ It is right to give
him thanks and praise.”
Are we ready for this prayer…this Eucharistic Prayer?
I will be so attentive that when we’ve finished the Eucharistic
Prayer with a room-shaking Amen, I’ll know just how right and
good it is to pray the Our Father together, greet one another with
Christ’s peace, then enter a procession (not a line, a procession)
that is singing its way to the table of the Lord.
And I’ll come hungry. By some kind of fasting – from food, from
entertainment, from distractions, from anger - -I’ll come on
Sunday knowing in body and soul how hungry I am to hear God’s
word and hungry to give God thanks and praise and hungry to
feast on the Body of Christ given for us, the Blood of Christ
poured out for us.
And I’ll never again think that I can do any of this alone. How
could I? It is not I who give God thanks and praise, it is the
Body of Christ that makes this Eucharistic prayer. All the
baptized people in this room put their lives into this prayer that
the ordained priest proclaims. And it goes beyond the room.
That’s why we remember the Church all over the world in our
prayers for the bishop and the pope, the living and the dead.
Am I ready for this prayer? Are we?
From the “Hooray and Halleluia” Department….
Word has gotten to me that Donald Robert Marschall, Jr., the son
of Connie Marschall of our parish, recently received a “Purple
Heart” from the United States Government. Donald is in the
army and is stationed in Afghanistan. His vehicle struck an IED
and Donald was burned. We congratulate Donald for receiving a
“Purple Heart” for sure and we will certainly continue to pray for
his safety and that of all our troops stationed in Iraq and
Afghanistan and other dangerous assignments throughout the
globe.
Please remember to pray for all the men and women from St.
Peter Parish who are in the military and securing and assuring our
freedoms and our well being in the world community. Their
names are listed in our bulletin every week so please look at those
names and let it be a weekly reminder to lift up those folks in
prayer.
Have a great week as we inch toward March and spring! I’ll
see you in church!
Ash Wednesday, March 9, and Good Friday, April 22, are
days of abstinence only. All other days of Lent should be
marked by acts of penance and charity.
Fasting is defined as one full meal and two smaller meals,
with nothing in between, for those aged 18 – 59. Water
and medication are permitted.
Abstinence is not eating meat, for those aged 14 and older.
For those who are sick or infirm, the law does not oblige,
but Catholics should not lightly hold themselves excused.
DINNERS FOR 8 - SPRING 2011
Would you like to get to know other
members of the parish?
"Dinners For 8" is a casual way to get
better acquainted with others in the
parish. The plan is simple: 4 couples
(8 people) have dinner once a month for
4 months. Singles are welcome as well.
Each couple/pair takes a turn hosting
and preparing an informal meal for the
others in their group. The couples/individuals are put into groups
where hopefully no one knows each other, but have the chance to
build new community by sharing the 4 meals together. We make
every effort to group people based upon common stages of life. It
is an easy, fun way to get to know other folks in the parish.
If you are interested, please email Steve Meyer at
EUCHARISTIC ADORATION
February 27, 2011
"But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness,
and all these things will be given you besides." (Mt 6:33)
We have so many struggles in this life, but "only in
God is my soul at rest (Ps 62:2)."
Most of us have experienced moments of
peacefulness that refreshed our souls and comforted
our hearts...on a vacation or retreat, in prayer, an
afternoon nap.... Many of us may feel the need for
more of such moments.
Setting aside time for quiet prayer in our week may seem
impossible right now due to the busy-ness of schedules, but it is
as necessary as sleeping, eating and drinking water. We can try to
do without it, but find our lives more of a struggle. Just as many
have experienced the paradox that we experience an increased
energy level if we exercise, though we may feel too tired to
exercise! "Scheduling it in" makes sure it happens. Pray and
consider adding a weekly Holy Hour to your schedule...and reap
the benefit of increased peace of soul!
The following four Holy Hours are in need of an adorer:
Wednesday 9:00PM
Thursday 3:00PM and 6:00PM
Friday Noon
The following hours are in need of a partner:
Monday 8:00AM
Tuesday 7:00AM, 7:00PM
Wednesday 9:00AM, 7:00PM
Friday 6:00PM
are welcome to be a part of this group.
We review the Scripture readings, and discuss how they relate to
us. If you are interested, please join us after 9am Sunday Mass at
any or all of the sessions listed below. If you are hungry, stop by
first at the kitchen for some coffee and pastries!
FR. GARY'S PANTRY NEEDS HELP!
February 27, 2011
Our parish gathered approximately 1,155 items of needed food for
Fr. Gary's parish food pantry, that’s GREAT. Thank You!
A big thank you goes to Jacob Trokey who attends SLUH for
helping this month deliver all of the bags of food collected. Our
other belated thank you goes to Bill Biele for helping deliver food
for several months since it is now requires 2 cars to get it all to
Sts. Teresa & Bridget parish. THANKS GUYS!
By collecting food monthly St. Peter’ is clearly responding to
Jesus' call to feed Him when He is hungry.
Our upcoming delivery date is March 21, see you then.
DROP OFF LOCATION ~
A SPECIAL REQUEST FROM FR. GARY . . .
OLD CARS NEEDED: Sts. Teresa & Bridget parish is very busy
with many projects in North city, having transportation is a
necessity. Check out Fr. Gary's web site, "frgary.com".
Planning to trade an old car and willing to donate it? A tax
donation letter of the Blue Book value will be issued to donors.
Please contact: Sts. Teresa & Bridget Parish, 314-371-1190.
ROOM AT THE INN
Due to a facilities scheduling conflict here at St. Peter, we made a
one-time change to our normal parish hosting commitment. A St.
Peter's Room at the Inn coordinator and parishioner, Larry Pfile,
assisted 5 homeless guests at the Sisters of Divine Providence
location in Bridgeton on Friday, February 18. The evening
included sharing a meal with the clients, playing with the 3- and 8
-year-old children, and offering a supportive and safe
environment for the adults who wished to speak about their
current life and job search situations.
The Room at the Inn program is a great opportunity to practice
stewardship by sharing our time and blessings with those who are
not as fortunate. We will resume our normal hosting of guests
next month and every third Friday of the month thereafter.
If you would like additional information about the program or
would like to volunteer, call Jim (965-1939), Pat (966-3165), or
Larry (821-7929). Thank you!

“To Be or Not to Be Fruitful and Multiply:
A Catholic Approach to Infertility”
By Dr. Brian Gosser
Join Dr. Brian Gosser and the St. Peter Pro-Life Group
for a discussion of the Catholic Church’s teaching on
infertility treatments. Why is infertility more common
now than it ever used to be? Why does the Church have
so much to say about infertility treatments? Doesn’t the
Church want us to have children? What are acceptable
Catholic approaches to the treatment of infertility?
What are my options and do they work? (You might be
surprised at their successes!) How can I support
someone close to me that struggles with infertility?
Come learn more about this topic and bring your
questions too!
TREASURE REPORT AT-A-GLANCE
“Should anyone press you into service for one mile, go for two
miles.”
Matthew 5:41
Today Our Lord clearly challenges us to go the extra mile in our
service. We are invited to participate more fully in the work of
the Church. In this busy world that is not an easy challenge to
accept. Yet, our response can become easier and clearer for us
when we take the time every day to simply ask, “Lord, what do
you want me to do with all the gifts You have given me? How
would You like me to become more fully involved in the life of
Your Church?”
YOUNG FAMILIES GROUP
Our next monthly rosary is
Monday, February 28th
The Parish Library
In Ursuline Hall
Have you ever wanted to say the rosary as a family but just
thought your kids were too little or would not pay attention?
Maybe you don't even remember how to say the rosary but might
if you were reminded. The Young Families group at St. Peter
Parish has decided to make saying the rosary a true family event!
We will meet in the Parish Library in Ursuline Hall the 4th
Monday of each month from 6:30-7:00PM and say the rosary
for a special intention. All you need to bring is a rosary and your
family. There is no need to worry that your kids might be loud or
not pay attention, all will add to the overall meaningful prayer our
families can offer.
