Report of the Parish Priest 2011
Thanks for the welcome
It has been nearly six months since you welcomed Burton and me into the parish. You have completely and
beautifully renovated the rector’s study. You celebrated this new ministry we share with a wonderful service
and dinner. Ray Nembhard, the rector’s warden and Brian Crow, the peoples’ warden have been very attentive
in helping me find my feet. Judy Asker, our administrator, has gently and efficiently initiated me into the
mysteries of the Apple computer, the Vestry book and all the schedules of activities here at St. Mary
Magdalene. Barbara Crow and the pastoral care team have introduced me to the shut-ins, Dayle Michaud, our
honorary assistant deacon has been very helpful as I discover how St. Mary Mag does worship. Members of
vestry, Hope Bettess and the altar guild, Nancy Aasland, our music director, Jane Barter Moulaison, our
honorary assistant priest and youth ministry leader, Bob English, honorary assistant priest, and all those who
volunteer to provide worship for personal care home residents, members of the congregation, and the
members of the Asian Christian Fellowship – all have been gracious in welcoming and guiding me as I begin to
minister among you. Thank you all for your gracious hospitality and your generous spirit. And although I am
feeling very much at home here, I am aware that I am still learning who you are and how the parish works. I
haven’t done everything once yet. So for my report this year I thought that I would share with you my goals
for this first year together, some of my first impressions of the parish and talk a bit about how the process has
been going.
First impressions
My first impression of this parish was one of a strong and active parish. The building and the finances are in
good shape. The many people active in worship ministry, the altar guild members, the lay readers, intercessors,
scripture readers, sound system managers, anointers, administrants, and choir reveal the importance of prayer
in this community. You are actively involved in learning about your faith through regular and ongoing Bible
study and book study.
As I began to get to know you I was impressed by your care for each other and for your neighbours. Pastoral
care is a high priority, and the way the pastoral care team ministers to the sick and the shut-ins as well as
ensuring that no one “falls through the cracks”, reveals the deep connection between your faith and your love
for each other. You care for your neighbours by volunteering in three different personal care homes, by your
commitment to the people of the inner city through St. Matthew’s-Maryland Community Ministry, by
preparing Christmas hampers, by sharing the Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter offerings with others,
through the Table Wisdom program, by sharing this building with the Vital Seniors, the French Presbyterian
ministry, the Girl Guide movement and the Scouting movement.
Goals for the first year
I set myself some goals for this first year together. My plan is:
1. To spend the first 3-4 months getting to know you, meeting with individuals and small groups.
2. To set up a worship planning committee, beginning with a study of worship and then moving on to
plan some special services and seasons.
3. After Christmas to have at least one and maybe two parish events for the purpose of getting to know
the parish as a functioning whole.
4. And of course to carry on with the daily life of the parish.
I am slowly getting to know you. A group of those interested in worship have been meeting on Sundays after
church and have nearly completed the study of Joan Chittister’s book, “The Liturgical Year: the spiralling
adventure of the spiritual life”. We have also done some planning for ways to enrich our worship experience
during Lent. In March we will meet to plan for Holy Week and Easter.

Our first parish conference, “Unveiling St. Mary Magdalene or letting Mary know what matters to us” was held on
January 28 with about 45 people attending. It seems that what matters to the parish of St. Mary Magdalene is
our faith, and the ability to participate in worship. In fact we would like to share our faith with our friends and
neighbours. We are also very committed to caring for one another and would like to do more of it and to do it
better. And we wish we could do more with and for children and young families. However we are aware that
we are growing older and we are a little frustrated that we are not capable of doing the same things we could
ten years ago.
My hope is that we will continue to explore how and to what God is calling the parish of St. Mary Magdalene.
It is an honour and a privilege to be your priest. I frequently give thanks to God for you, for your faith, your
loving care for your parish and your world.

Deacon's Annual Report for 2011
The past year has been one of many changes. We said goodbye to The Rev. Preston Parsons and his wife
Karen Sunabacka. Preston is now studying in Cambridge, England, and Karen is moving back and forth
between Cambridge and Winnipeg where she holds two positions – one at Providence College, and one at the
University of Manitoba. On September 1 st , 2011 we welcomed The Rev. Mary Lysecki as our rector to St.
Mary Magdalene, and Mary has been settling in since that time.
This past year, we lost many long time and well known parishioners. Kitty and Ken Welham, Nell Hicks,
Jessie Smith, Mary Saranchuk, Jack Sheffield and more recently Gary Brabant have all passed away since our
last annual meeting in January, 2011.
Lissa Wray Beal left St. Mary Magdalene in the Fall to do a term placement at the parish of St. Philip in
Norwood, and is due back this Spring after Easter. The Rev. Dr. Jane Barter Moulaison began working with
the Sudanese community, Emmanuel Mission, which meets at the parish of St. Matthew in downtown
Winnipeg, and she continues to serve St. Mary Magdalene as Director of Family Christian Education. Aaron
Peterson and his wife Erin welcomed daughter Taliah Miriam in December, 2011. Brian Crow resumed his
duties as lay reader in the parish, and has been a great addition to the roster of lay readers who serve at Sunday
morning worship.
Change in our personal lives and in the life of a parish is a constant, and St. Mary Magdalene has seen a much
more than usual amount of change in the past year. Still we move on, and remain open to the new possibilities
with a new rector and all the creative ideas that can come from creative and open minded parishioners. Mary
has begun to work with a group of people who will form a worship committee, and we look forward to the
ideas and dreams that will come from that group.
One of the highlights of the year was Faith Horizons, the semi annual diocesan event which was held on
October 14 th , and 15 th , 2011. It was entitled Xpressions, and featured guest speakers Drs. Nix-Early and
Corbitt, co-founders of Build-a-Bridge International, a community-based organization that uses the arts to
reach out to at-risk youth worldwide. It was good to hear Drs. Nix-Early and Corbitt as they described the
work they do to help youth become transformed through art and music. The deacons in the diocese held a
workshop where their expressions of artistic endeavours were displayed as well as a video that was shown to
give example of the work that is being done by deacons in the diocese. The workshop was well attended, and
those who came spent time in conversation with the deacons present and learned more about what it is to be a
deacon, and some of the educational routes that are available to help move toward ordination to the diaconate.
It has been good to attend Fresh Start gatherings, where we look at new beginnings for rectors/incumbents
and their parishes. It’s a very positive way to sit with other parishes who are also beginning a new process with

a new rector, and to consider all the positive possibilities available as well as the difficulties that can arise for
both clergy and lay with change in a parish.
I continue to schedule lay readers, administrants, intercessors, and anointing ministers. I attend Vestry
meetings, pastoral meetings, deanery meetings, ministerial meetings, Network of Deacons meetings, Diaconal
Working Group meetings, and attend a book study which meets on Wednesday evenings.
I have been asked to be part of a small group who will be planning worship for the upcoming Diocesan Synod
which be held in October. It will be a challenge and a privilege to plan the services that begin with the
opening at the Cathedral on Thursday, Oct. 18 th , as well as the services that occur throughout the sessions on
Friday, and Saturday, Oct. 19 th , and 20 th
It is an honour to serve and be part of the parish of St. Mary Magdalene.

Wardens’ Annual Report for 2011
At the beginning of the year the Rev. Preston Parsons announced his resignation as rector effective 31
July. The wardens met immediately to discuss the process for finding a new rector. We worked at developing a
parish profile (a required document used in hiring an incumbent.) The process involved responses to
questions from the Bishop, feedback from parishioners as well as from outside the parish. We had
approximately 100 parishioner inputs. The profile was completed and approved by the Bishop and the position
advertised in mid-April for seven weeks. After short listing the candidates the Canonical Committee
comprising the wardens and Synod delegates (Bill Regehr, Tannis Webster and Lissa Wray-Beal) completed a
set of interview questions, prepared for the interviews and provided an opportunity for some key parish
leaders to meet with the candidates. The interviews took place in June. The Rev. Mary Lysecki was the
unanimous choice and the Bishop was pleased to appoint Mary as our parish priest.
It was a joy to welcome Mary to our parish family at the beginning of September. She wasted no time
in becoming familiar with the Fall schedule and the many activities going on in the parish and our building.
She has been working hard to meet and get to know parishioners individually. Mary would also be pleased to
have you call and make an appointment to meet together.
A very moving “Commissioning of New Ministries” service for Mary was held on September 18. It
was attended by over 200 people from all over the diocese. An elder, Barbara Shmooski invoked a blessing,
our choir was joined by St. Peter’s choir and the Asian Christian Fellowship choir provided hymns sung in
Urdu. The Service was followed by a wonderful potluck supper and warm words of welcome from Bishop
Donald Phillips.
A farewell dinner was held for Preston and Karen on 17 June attended by well over 100 people. Gifts
were presented including a purse of money to help with the expense of attending Cambridge University in
England, a print and an icon of St. Mary Magdalene and a beautiful chasuble made by Gail Forrest. Bill Regehr
and Pam Parisian organized a delicious sit down dinner and the choir provided some fun musical
entertainment. The parish was pleased to support this send-off accompanied with words and prayers of
encouragement for Preston and Karen’s future endeavours.
The Wardens have been meeting with Mary on a regular basis to attend to the affairs of the parish and
to assist her in working towards a vision of the future. We have been invited to stand ‘in solidarity’ with Mary
at the end of the Sunday Service to greet worshippers as they go to the outer hall for coffee and socialization.
So far this is an idea that seems to be well received.
The parish has been participating in “Fresh Start”, a program for clergy and lay readers at the
beginning of new incumbencies. The Parish is represented by Mary (who is one of the program leaders), Dayle
Michaud, the Wardens, Margaret Jones, Gail and Alan Forrest. The third of four sessions was held in our
building on 24 January.

A big thank you goes to The Rev. Dr. Jane Barter-Moulaison who conducted Confirmation classes and
prepared candidates for taking their place in the church. The Confirmation ceremony took place on Sunday 17
May with the Bishop presiding. Six young persons were confirmed and one other received into the Anglican
Church. We are grateful to Jane, for her work with the Sunday school and the leadership provided by Carey
Isaac and Barbara Bater in taking turns working with the youth.
St. Mary Magdalene was well represented at Faith Horizons in October. The Rev. Dr. Jane Barter-
Moulaison and The Rev. Mary Lysecki were part of the planning/leadership committee for the event. Barbara
Bater hosted a display table which showcased various items unique to our parish. These included Altar linens
and photographs of robes made by Gail Forrest, a prayer shawl made by Pat Darlington, seasonal banners by
Lianne Marsh and plates of cookies baked by Pam Parisian for the visitors who stopped by our table. Tannis
Webster and Mary assisted in the worship services. Jennifer Nembhard led a workshop which focused on
music in keeping with the theme of the conference which was the Arts in the life of the Church.
On Sunday 16 October we had Simon Chambers, the Communication Coordinator for PWRDF visit
with us. He gave the sermon and gave a video presentation after about the work of PWRDF. Closer to home
we continue to support the inner city ministry of St. Matthew’s-Maryland. Our liaison is provided by Margaret
Jones and Barbara Bater. The parish is assisting St. Vital Youville Clinic provide a school lunch program and
continue to host a seniors kitchen wisdom meal preparation program.
A shortened version of Consecration Sunday was held on the Feast of Christ the King, Nov 20
followed by a hot lunch prepared by men of the parish. This condensed version was held in order to return to
holding the event in the fall, since one was held earlier in March of the year.
The Parish members rejoiced in the successful outcome of the “Out of Africa” project which reunited
three Hambira children with their parents. A big “well done” and thanks to all who were involved from our
congregation especially David Newman who travelled back from South Africa to Canada. The Rotary Club of
Charleswood were and still are the lead sponsors. The family worshipped with us on 4 December and
presented an altar cloth from Zimbabwe.
Thanks to Nancy and John Chan’s continued leadership with two very successful Garage Sale events
held in the Spring and Fall of the year. These events provide fellowship and a valuable connection with our
surrounding community.
We are pleased to have the Asian Christian Fellowship worshipping in the building monthly on Sunday
evenings. The turnout is well over 50 persons. The majority of this congregation is Urdu speaking. Qaiser
Bhatti is one of the leaders and a lay reader in our congregation. With the approval of Vestry we have signed a
document which cements the relationship as one that falls under the authority of the parish priest and as a
consequence is a part of the fabric of the parish and diocese. A special thanks to the ACF for their
participation in the welcome service held for Mary back in September.
The Corporation has negotiated an arrangement with a group of French speaking Presbyterians to hold
services and other church related activities in our building. Known as L’Eglise Viens et Vois, they are small
group just getting started and draw on folks living in the St. Vital and St. Boniface areas. We will continue to
do what we can to make this a success. Please welcome The Rev. Charles Kahumbu as he leads services, bible
studies and counseling sessions.
Judy Asker, office administrator, now works in the office four afternoons a week. This arrangement
started in September as Judy accepted a similar position but in the mornings at St. Luke’s parish on Nassau.
This arrangement is working well for all concerned.
Improvements with security were necessitated by concern for the safety of persons working alone in
the building and the loss of items. A camera intercom system was installed in November. A second phase, a
buzzer door unlock mechanism will be undertaken so that Mary and Judy will be able to unlock the door from
their offices. A third part of the security is to install an overnight alarm system. It seems that these steps have
already been or are being undertaken in a number of churches. At the same time the 10 year old phone system
was upgraded and a separate line added for the rector.
We are blessed to have many parishioners exercise outreach ministries in various ways. Of note is the
pastoral care team that now includes, Mary Lysecki, Barbara Crow, Gerry Brown, Mary Valentine, June Freeth,

Eleanor Goffard, Dayle Michaud among others who take communion to and/or visit those not always able to
get out and about. The Altar Guild, chaired by Hope Bettess, faithfully prepares the Sanctuary for Sunday
worship and special occasions. Thanks to the group of people who contribute to our fellowship following the
Services – thinking here of people like Pam Parisian, Geri Cassels, Margaret Jones who bake treats and prepare
the tea/coffee. Pam also arranges for the Altar Flower donations and the greeters ministry. Thanks to Barbara
Bater and Gail Eyolfson who continue to care for the gardens and flowers that grace the outside of our
building. Many passers-by comment favourably on the pleasant surroundings. Bill Regehr, Alan Forrest and
others take on maintenance tasks around the buildings and it was they, with Pam Parisian who arranged for the
new furniture and decorating Mary’s office for her. Brian Aminot-Waseila in a very cheerful manner continues
to do a wonderful job as our building caretaker. This is no easy job given all the groups that use the building.
We are appreciative of the music leadership Nancy Aasland and choir bring to the Sunday service. For sure
there are people and activities that we have failed to mention. However, the One for whom we are pleased to
do these things knows who you are.
In a final observation we thank everyone who makes St. Mary Magdalene their worshipping home and
for the care and love you bring to this community. If you are moved by anything you read in the pages of the
2011 annual report we would be pleased to receive your comments and if you feel called to volunteer for any
activity your involvement would be appreciated.

Property Committee Report 2011
After a very productive 2010 - the roof on the sanctuary and parish hall was replaced, the sound system
upgraded, the nursery and adjoining room modified to accommodate a Kindermusik program it was decided
that 2011 would be a year of rest from major projects. However, some things were undertaken.
� The electric door opener on the main door was installed.
� Repairs were completed to the downstairs kitchen cupboards following a water line break.
� The Norberry-Glenlee Community Club started/completed an extensive rebuild of their sports fields.
The parking lot we share was left intact.
� Rectory repairs included unplugging, on two occasions, the drain to the city sewer, replacing the hot
water heater, trimming the large trees in the yard, banking soil against the foundation, repairs to the
storm doors.
� The chimney was repointed.
� The driveway and parking lot were graded and covered with 40 tons of crushed limestone.
� The committee reviewed plans for 2012 and set about obtaining quotes for new carpet in the
sanctuary, asphalting the driveway, insulating the exterior wall of the 1926 hall and replacing the roof
over the rector’s office and upstairs washrooms. Contact was made with the University of Manitoba
Electrical Engineering department and St. John’s Cathedral for help in redesigning the lighting in the
sanctuary.
� A toilet in a downstairs washroom was replaced with a water efficient model as a trial.
� The rector’s office was repainted and new furniture purchased to make the space comfortable and
welcoming.
� A camera/voice security system was installed at the main door following some security matters. An
application to the Cropo Foundation for funding to undertake a phase two – remote lock release is
pending. A third phase involves installing motion detectors with 24/7 monitoring.

� A Provincial Community Places Grant application has been submitted. The items included are:-
o Insulating the exterior foundation wall of the 1926 building (upper hall, conference room and
nursery) in order to reduce heat loss through the wall,
o Rebuilding/asphalting the driveway to improve the safety of persons alighting from their cars,
and
o Replacing five old style toilets with water efficient ones.
The cost of doing these three items is approximately $ 38,000. The amount requested from CPP is $
12,440. We should hear in late March early April if we have been successful.
The Committee members wish to give a vote of thanks to Bill Regehr who has chaired the committee for a
number of years. He has done a great deal of planning, proposal writing and physical work for many years. Bill
passed on the baton of chairperson at the end of October.
The Committee consists of Bill Regehr, Gerry Brown, Jim Cartlidge, Gail and Alan Forest, Pam Parisian, Neil
Giesbrecht Mary Lysecki and Brian Crow. Other people assisted with activities throughout the year including

Pastoral Care Ministry Annual Report for 2011
During the past year, there were monthly Pastoral Care Team meetings. Members on this team include: The
Rev. Mary Lysecki, Deacon Dayle Michaud, Gerry Brown, Eleanor Goffard, June Freeth, Mary Valentine and
Barbara Crow. The purpose of the meetings is to update team members and coordinate services to
parishioners in need. Sadly, the church lost many, dedicated parishioners who passed on to eternal life last
year.
Personal Care Home (PCH) worship services continue once / month, led by The Reverend Mary Lysecki both
at Vista Park Lodge and River Park Gardens. The Reverend Bob English conducts services at Catherine Place
with the assistance of parishioner/resident Betty Buck. Maureen Dryburgh coordinates the volunteers (9) for
Vista Park Lodge, as well as leading the intercessions. Thank you to Bill Birtles for many years of service,
choosing hymns and accompanying the singing on piano. During Bill’s ‘grandparental leave’ in Nov. and Dec.
2011, Reinhold Pauls stepped into plan and play music at the PCH services. Indeed, thank you to all the
faithful volunteers who assist Mary, Bob, Dayle and the personal care home residents in their worship services.

Altar Guild Report 2011
The Altar Guild continues to do their part behind the scenes caring for the sanctuary and setting up for
communion every Sunday as well as special services, funerals and weddings. At Christmas and Easter, the
brass and silverware gets a fresh coat of polish. We also decorate the church for Thanksgiving and Christmas
services. We would like to thank the congregation for their help at these times.
A special thank you to Jennifer and Alicia Porth our “junior” members for all their help. We also thank Ken
Bettess for refreshing our memory on how to make crosses each year.
Pam Parisian continues to coordinate the Altar flowers for each Sunday and ordering poinsettias for Christmas
and lilies for Easter. Thank you to everyone who makes her job easier. Hilda Rudnicki makes sure all of our
linens are kept clean, thank you Hilda! Also, a big thank you to Betty Buck, “our mum”, who keeps us all in
line.
We meet quarterly, on a Tuesday morning, and we always welcome new members. Last year we dropped to
nine members, eight after Jessie Smith’s death. We would like to thank Jean Crowe for filling in for Jessie
when she was ill and joining us later in the year. We would also like to welcome Nancy Chan and Margaret
Jones as new members and also welcome back Lois Melnyk.

Lay Readers Annual Report 2011
The lay readers of St. Mary Magdalene who assist in the leading of worship on Sunday mornings and other
services are Barbara Bater, Brian Crow, Joe Darlington, Maureen Dryburgh, Lissa Wray Beal and Aaron
Peterson. Brian Crow who provided lay leadership during the summer months has returned to the regular
roster. Maureen has been on sick leave and we pray for her health and her return to this ministry. During the
early months of the year Lissa was on a work sabbatical in Cambridge, England. She was able to return to us at
Easter through to September when she was assigned to St. Philip’s Parish to complete a ministerial placement.
Aaron Peterson became a first father on December 11th. He and his wife, Erin, have a beautiful daughter,
Taliah.
The lay readers met twice during the year to share a meal, discuss ministry, evaluate past services, plan for
upcoming services and to support each other. Rev. Preston Parsons joined us for the January meeting and Rev.
Mary Lysecki for the September meeting. Rev. Deacon Dayle Michaud attended both meetings.
It is a privilege to be part of a ministry that gives glory to God and hopefully enriches the lives of all that
worship at the Parish of St. Mary Magdalene.

St. Matthew’s Maryland Community Ministry Annual Report 2011
We represented our Parish at meetings with the Community Ministry and other Anglican parishes on January
26 th , May 18 th and September 28 th . The other parishes were St. Paul’s Fort Garry, St. Mary’s Charleswood, St.
Peter’s and St. Matthew’s. The United Church partners also attended the May meeting.
In March our Parish provided 20 sets of food for ”Stir Fry with Rice” for the Nutrition Bingo. $162.24 was
also donated towards the purchase of other ingredients for the recipe. On March 15th we donated eight litres
of hamburger soup, 2 dozen whole wheat buns and cookies for the Ministry’s Dinner and a Movie evening.
In June we sold tickets and collected donations for the Urban Retreats Garden Tour held in the West End area
of the city. We volunteered as hosts at one of the gardens on the tour.
In December new toys, white gifts, knitted clothing and toiletries were donated towards the Christmas Toy
Store hosted by the Ministry. The free Toy Store is open to parents who cannot afford to buy gifts for their
children. The Wednesday Bible Study group provided sandwiches and other goodies for the Christmas week
drop–in. Two of our parishioners volunteered as hosts at the event.
Thanks to the generosity of two of our parishioners four sets of children’s snowsuits, hats, mittens and snow
boots were donated to the Ministry.
Throughout the year we collected food and other non-perishable items for their emergency cupboard. Coffee
mugs and Canadian Tire money were also collected.
Our vestry donated $575.00 to the Ministry.
Thanks for your generous support to this Outreach Ministry.

Garage Sale Report 2011
St. Mary Magdalene Church held two successful garage sales this past year. Our Spring sale netted $4529.42
profit and Fall sale $5022.44 for a grand total of $9551.86. Expenses of the garage sale consist of markers,
masking tape and ads placed in the Free Press and Winnipeg Sun. The internet has opened us up to a whole
new clientele with free ads being placed on various sites such as kijjii.
Set up and sorting during the week of both sales ran efficiently with our large number of volunteers. Again
this year Waka Whitecloud and his friends were able to provide an invaluable service of help with clean up.
These young men arrive promptly and do all the heavy lifting such as loading trucks and putting tables away.
For this they are given an honorarium.
Friday evening meals were provided this year by the generosity of Norma Edwards, spring sale and Bill
Regehr, fall sale.
We continue to deliver leftover items of the garage sale to Value Village due to proximity and the willingness
of them to take all items. We have reviewed other methods of removal with no results so far.
One concern over these years’ sales is the amount of broken and outdated electronics/televisions being
donated. We have requested that people do not donate these items as the church has to take them to
electronic waste depots. In the near future there will be an added cost to dispose of these items.
Following Changes will be made to garage sales in 2012
1. Hours of Sale Friday 9am-7pm, Saturday 9am-12noon
2. In order to reduce electronic waste we will provide a list of unacceptable items to all parishioners and
groups who use the church.
3. Guides and Scouts will be asked to assist in clean up well in advance of sale.
At this time we would like to request the following dates, April 27 th /28 th be reviewed and approved for the
Spring Garage Sale 2012.

Primate’s World Relief & Development Fund Report 2011
Information from the National PWRDF Annual General Meeting and the Forum of the Diocesan Reps held
in Toronto November 2011 as reported by Susan Roe-Finlay, Rupert’s Land Diocesan Representative.
Some of the plans about a way forward include:
PWRDF continuing to do what it does best: Humanitarian response; and sustainable community development.
Further, to achieve these goals the staff recognized there needs to be a continued engagement of Canadian
Anglicans and financial sustainability.
Staff members hope to have a presence in each Diocese in order to get to know the people in these areas. In
Manitoba, we have been blessed with a visit by Adele Finney, the Executive Director, in the past year. As
always, such a visit brings together the Parish partners and energizes them. We are able to ask our own
questions and get immediate responses and to learn from each other.
At the Forum, we learned more about the Anglican Alliance from Sally Keeble who heads this organization,
which works out of UK. The Alliance was formed at the last Lambeth meeting to join together the outreach

efforts in other jurisdictions. PWRDF has also formed alliances with the Canadian Foodgrains Bank, the
Ecumenical Advocacy Alliance, the Anglican Council of Indigenous People, and Imagine Canada. PWRDF has
joined the Canadian Christian Business Federation.
We learned more about the constraints that CIDA is now imposing. Only certain countries, larger grants but
fewer, and emphasis on such things as health and food security.
This means that a larger portion of gathered monies is needed for projects that do not fit these criteria.
Regular giving is needed and new booklets are out to tell you how to give! If you leave the gift undesignated
the money can go where it is most needed. Some gifts can be given through a gift booklet (like other charities
have been doing for a while)
The Anglican Youth have developed new tools. They used the electronic devices that fit into computers as
well as catchy booklets in print. There have been Leader conferences to fit our young for leadership. If you
have someone in your parish please put her/his name forward.
In the Forum, we also followed up with work we had done earlier about job descriptions for Parish Reps., and
Diocesan Coordinators, and Diocesan Reps. Many Dioceses combine these last into one person. One
strong recommendation was to appoint someone for a term of 3 years, with a maximum of 3 terms. This is to
prevent burn out and to introduce new Leadership.
This, like other potential shifts in the strategic plan will mean that although the work will continue, the
PWRDF we know will look different at the next AGM in 2 years.

Memorials Annual Report 2011
Donations to the memorials Fund are gratefully appreciated and may be made on a regular basis or at any time.
They may be donated for a specific purpose, such as in lieu of flowers in memory of someone, or in the form
of a regular donation or as a bequest in a parishioner’s will. These funds help to ensure the ongoing
maintenance of the building, or to complete specific projects.
The memorial and pet memorial boards, on the rear wall of the church, are available for Memorial Plates -
installed at a cost of $20 each, at any time.
The bibles should remain in the pews for use during the service.

Wednesday Bible Study Group Annual Report for 2011
The bible study group has met regularly throughout the year, taking a break from June to September. We have
continued to use the Seasons of the Spirit curriculum which is itself undergoing some changes, and have
rotated the leadership between our members. The study follows our lectionary and we find it helpful to study
the readings for the up- coming Sunday in fellowship and friendship. We meet at noon and say the Mid-day
prayers from the BAS followed by a bag lunch and study. The group has also supported St Matthews Maryland
Community Ministry by making sandwiches for their drop-in centre from time to time. New members are
always welcome.

Music and Choir Report 2011
2011 was a good year in the choir, as we continued to explore new music, revisit old favourites, and encourage
our young singers to share their talents.
Highlights include music at the Anglican Fellowship of Prayer’s Lenten Quiet Day led by Rev Aubrey
Hemminger, an Easter anthem that our teens are asking to sing again, and a simple and beautiful Advent
service. Not to mention our performance of Ghost Riders in the Sky to honour Preston’s love of Johnny
Cash at his farewell party.
We have a big project coming up in 2012. Mary Lysecki, Barbara Bater and I have begun meeting to organize
an update of the parish songbook. It contains a lot of songs that are now duplicated in the blue hymnal, and
we’d like to add some of the newer music that is currently appearing on inserts in the leaflet. Members of the
choir will continue to help me narrow down which ones we need to keep, and there will be times when we
seek congregational input too.
Finally, I must mention that in 2011 we lost our good friend and long-time choir member Jessie Smith. We
miss her smiles and hugs, and her sweets tin filled with candied ginger and “Fisherman’s Friend”. She had
many songs that were among her favourites, and we think of her whenever we sing them.

Christmas Hampers Report 2011
Once again I am very pleased with the very generous response from our parish. We had another very
successful drive to make up Christmas Hampers for the Christmas Cheer Board. We were able to make up
nine very generous hampers this year as well as having items for the St. Matthews Maryland collection.
This year we decided to go out and buy gifts for all the children. This used up the funds we received for the
hampers a lot quicker... However, we were then sure we had an appropriate gift for each child. Also, on
the plus side this meant that the all the toys that were brought in were freed up in order to go to the St.
Mathews Maryland ministry.
I also want to give a big THANK YOU to all those who helped to assemble the Christmas Hampers! Any and
all help is much appreciated.

Prayer Partners Annual Report 2011
We currently have 18 members that make up our 5 Prayer teams . They are dedicated people that fulfill our
many requests for prayer.
Being part of the prayer ministry means taking time on a daily basis to pray for the 5 or 6 people on their lists.
We have had a very busy year and have done our very best to fulfill this need.
We continuously receive positive and thankful feed back from the families that we have prayed for.
Mary and I would encourage all parishioners to give prayerful consideration to joining Prayer Partners.
This would allow us to form additional teams and enable us to fulfill all incoming requests in a timely manner.

Family Ministries Coordinator Report 2011
This was a year that saw many changes for family ministries. We said goodbye to Preston and Karen, both of
whom were huge supporters of families in this parish. We said hello to Mary and are happy to have a new
incumbent in the parish who is also supportive of youth and their witness within the church. We were also
pleased to have been consulted during the parish's work of discernment for a new priest.
Three of the children from the Sunday School were confirmed on the second Sunday of Easter of this past
year. Amadea Aasland, Luc Moulaison, and Sophie Moulaison were joined by Alicia Porth, Jennifer Porth and
Barbara LaJoie as they prepared for their confirmation. The confirmation class prepared for several months
studying the Bible and the Anglican tradition. They also engaged in social ministry, liturgical leadership and
community building activities. A particular highlight was our retreat at Canadian Mennonite University where
Nancy Aasland and I led the confirmation class on an overnight trip including silent retreat, banner making,
games, eucharist, and lots and lots of singing!
The Confirmation service itself highlighted the wonderful creativity of the children. Jen and Alicia sang a
heartfelt version of "Jesus Take the Wheel." Amadea Aasland composed and played a special piece of music
for piano. Sophie Moulaison wrote some beautiful poetry for the bulletin. Amadea contributed a short
story/allegory. Luc Moulaison read scripture and Luc, Sophie and I created a tear-jerker of a video montage of
various special moments of the children's lives thus far and of their confirmation experience.
Sunday School has an average attendance of seven children. Of these children, six are pre-teens and teenagers.
The curriculum is titled "Living the Good News." It is lectionary-based and contains a variety of media for
teaching and learning. Our classroom often incorporates creative reenactment of biblical stories such as Stop
Motion or acting out the story. This year, we are focusing on the biblical stories other than the gospels as the
children do not feel they know these stories as well. In addition to myself, there are three dedicated teachers:
Barbara Bater, Jeannie McClory and Carey Isaac. Carey recently took part in a workshop for "Catechesis of
the Good Shepherd" at Faith Horizons.
The children participated in several special forms of leadership throughout the year. Of particular note was
their highly successful Christmas Eve service which features a shadow play of the Nativity as told through Jean
de Brebeuf's "Huron Carol." Sophie and I co-authored the chancel drama which framed the shadow play.

Another memorable Christmas event was the considerable work the children did in wrapping over sixty gifts
for the children of Emmanuel Mission.
We were grateful for the safe return of Sherjeel, Ashbeel and Adbeel Bhatti from Pakistan. The boys shared
their experience of their trip with us and we all learned a great deal.
One area of concern continues to be the Nursery. Although I volunteer on occasion, there is no regular
schedule, and I would very much like to see a rotation of volunteers who would be willing to work there-perhaps
once a month. If anyone feels called to take such work on, please let me know.
It is a deep privilege to work with such a creative and wonderful group of children. Please take the time to
thank them for the ministry they offer as they share their energy and enthusiasm with us!

Report of the French Ministry, (a mission of the Presbyterian Church in Canada)
Presbytery of Winnipeg.
Reflections from the Rev. Charles Kahumbu, in advance of the St. Mary Magdalene Annual Meeting for 2011.
Here in your hands is the report for the year 2011 of the Église Protestante Viens & Vois (a mission of the
Presbyterian Church in Canada) in Winnipeg. As you read it and think for the annual meeting of your
congregation in February 19 th , 2012, I encourage you to keep things in perspective.
Now three months since December 2011, we have used the building of St. Mary Magdalene parish every
Sunday afternoon, for the worship service in French. Thank you very much for having agreed to the use of
the building of the church to serve the people of God who speak French.
A special thanks to the entire congregation, for your warm fellowship of God's children. And especially
thanks to the Rev. Mary and all members of vestry for your cooperation that I consider very special. We
feel really at home, we wish you all the blessings of God.
Regarding the French Ministry, one thing is true, that every beginning has always been difficult. We work hard
for the community of Winnipeg to be informed of the existence of the French Ministry. As we have no
financial means to educate the masses by any means of media that will take a long time for the growth of
French-speaking ministry. So I work myself as a volunteer, as a tents weaver. We hope that over time with the
Lord's help, things will gradually improve.
Since we started the worship service in French in last December of 2011, the average number of participants in
worship is 12 people including children. This is why we also need your prayers.
First, let us remember our privileges. One thing struck me about the Fellowship of St. Mary Magdalene
community. This is one aspect of the first era of the church. "They were together every day frequenting
the temple; they broke bread in their homes and took their food with gladness and singleness of
heart". (Acts 2: 46) The sense of wonder, that God has chosen to live in communion with and serve Christ in
building His church, is something to be cultivated because it helps maintain the challenge facing us in proper
perspective.

Secondly, let us seek to co-operate together in planning for the future. Discerning a clear vision of what God
calls us to be and to do is not easy, but must be our desire and must be in part achieved before we can direct
our gifts, energies and resources to Christ’s purposes.
God the Holy Spirit promises to give His church both the vision to enable us to be what Christ calls us to be –
His body; and the means to achieve what Christ calls us to do – the building of His church, hastening the
coming of His kingdom. Setting our priorities and balancing our efforts and resources to achieve these goals
should be the subject of a prayerful and healthy, active discussion. May God grant us both His guidance and
His blessing in your meeting and in the year ahead.
In Christ’s service, with a sense of privilege, a spirit of thanksgiving, and seeking to plan together with you and
with God for the future.

New Journey Al-Anon Family Group 2011
New Journey Al-Anon Family Group meets each Monday night at St. Mary Magdalene Anglican Church.
“Each Al-Anon Family Group has but one purpose, to help families of alcoholics.” (Tradition 5)
Capoeira Group Report 2011
The Capoeira Group has been using the basement hall for children’s class since October 2011. The class is
held once a week on a Friday evening. It is open to children between 7-12 years of age. Currently 3-5 students
attend class on a weekly basis.
An Adult class has also been offered Friday nights since December 2011. The adult class averages between 4-
8 students and is a mixture of Capoeira as well as music rehearsal.
There are plans to offer a 30 minute Capoeira movement class for parents and young children in the near
future. This would be open to young children under age 7
Kitchen Table Wisdom / Nutrition on the Go Report 2011
Youville Centre staff using a community development approach continues to use the Kitchen Facility at the
church the 1 st and 4 th Wednesday of the month.
Kitchen Table Wisdom is typically held on the 1 st Wednesday of the month. This group brings together
individuals 55+ to prepare and eat a meal together. The program provides an opportunity for older adults to
possibly try new recipes, to connect with other older adults, and learn from one another based on the
collective wisdom of the group.
The group recommenced October 2011 after taking a break for the summer. There is a core group of older
adults that attend with the numbers ranging from 6 to 15 participants each session. Generally, 6-9 older adults
attend regularly.
Nutrition on the Go
Initially slotted to be the second session for Kitchen Table Wisdom, the 4 th Wednesday of the month has
become a snack preparation day for the Nutrition on the Go program. Nutrition on the Go is a program that
has older adults preparing a hot lunch and a snack at Archwood school on Tuesday and Thursday on a weekly
basis.
Many of the older adults involved with Kitchen Table Wisdom have chosen to volunteer with Nutrition on the
Go. Furthermore, some volunteers with Nutrition on the Go have subsequently joined Kitchen Table
Wisdom. Nutrition on the Go commenced in the school in November 2011. Consequently, the volunteers
involved have used the church in November 2011 and January 2012 to prepare snacks for the 122 K-8
students at Archwood school. Generally there are 7-9 older adults that attend to prepare snacks for the
students.

Vital Seniors Report 2011
Our membership includes seniors from the community and many from the Parish of St. Mary Magdalene. In
2011, the membership stood at 264. The Executive and Activity Leadership includes church members in the
Executive Gerry Brown, June Freeth, Director, Pam Parisian, Betty Cobb, Doreen Giesbrecht and Chaplain
Bob English, Activity Coordinator Gerry Brown, and Fran Duffy.
Our major joint activity is our monthly luncheon at which time we celebrate the annual church festivals,
provide information sessions and entertainment. These luncheons are well attended and appreciated.
Last year’s activities also included carpet bowling, line dancing, scrabble, PACE and bridge. We also planned
and will celebrate our 20 th Anniversary on February 28, 2012.
We make an annual contribution in lieu of rental payments to St. Mary Magdalene for approximately $2500
yearly. In 2012, we expect to provide a new dishwasher and furniture through our application for a New
Horizons for Seniors grant of $10,000.
We appreciate the hospitality of the parish!

Kindermusik at St Mary Magdalene 2011
In September 2010 Nancy Aasland began teaching Kindermusik classes in the nursery here at St Mary
Magdalene. Kindermusik is an internationally renowned curriculum that introduces the joy of music-making to
children from infancy to age 7. Nancy has been teaching this program since 1998 at two other locations in
Winnipeg. Her program is now the largest in Canada, with over 500 students and 10 staff.
This year we are running about a dozen classes a week serving around 100 local families. They are having a
marvellous time – singing, dancing and playing percussion instruments.
I have had a couple ask question about the church, including a request for a tour.
