Issues starting to turn 

with new business in town

We are starting off 2010 with a lot of positive motion. 

Even the heavens above opened up and poured 

for a week giving us a great rainfall start for the year. 

City Manager Jose Pulido reports that staff has met 

with the property owners of the former Shell station at 

Oak and Las Tunas. They may 

have a new tenant who operates a 

Shell station in Pasadena. They 

might even add a carwash and 

larger convenience store. 

Super A Food Store estimates 

opening by March 1 at the former 

Rosemead Boulevard location of 

Albertson’s. The Chamber had a

grand opening at Anca Realty on 

Las Tunas with more than 100 in 

attendance. 

Parks and Recreation Director Cathy Burroughs and 

Mr. Pulido have prepared a draft list of proposed 

projects to submit for possible federal funding. 

The contract between the city and the economic development 

firm Avant-Garde has been terminated. Mr. 

Pulido has the background and experience in economic 

development that overlaps considerably with the services 

being provided by Avant-Garde. He will take over 

managing the Temple City’s revitalization and redevelopment, 

saving the city $20,000 to $22,000 a year. 

The City Council has proclaimed March 15 as Arbor 

Day in Temple City. 

After meeting with the city manager on Jan. 20, the 

Chamber of Commerce has decided not to take the lead 

on the farmers’ market. Because of difficult economic 

conditions, the Chamber believes that its focus should 

be on attraction and retention of business in town.

On Friday Feb. 5, the Temple 

City Camellia Festival will crown 

the 2010 king and queen at the annual 

coronation at 7 p.m. Carole 

Rodenbucher, General Chairman 

will preside over the ceremony. 

This will take place at 10144 Bogue 

St.(Live Oak Park). 

The 2009 King and Queen Matthew 

Lopez and Natalie Castro- 

Figueroa will pass on their crowns 

at the ceremony. 

The festivities for the 66th Annual 

Temple City Camellia Festival 

will take place on February 26, 27 

and 28. 

The theme for this year’s event 

is “Family Fun,” submitted by Kevin 

Vine, a sixth grade student attending 

Longden Elementary. 

The parade takes place at 10 a.m. 

Saturday, Feb. 27 over a 1.5 mile 

route down Las Tunas Drive starting 

at Sultana and finishing up at 

Rowland Avenue. Floats will be on 

display in Temple City Park until 9 

p.m. Saturday. 

Residents may bring Camellia blossoms in single layers 

to the City Hall on Friday the 26th.

Carole Rodenbucher, General Chairman 2010, was elevated to 

the top volunteer role from her involvement with the Camellia 

Festival for the past 12 years. Carole was the 2009 Assistant General 

Chairman. 

Parade Grand Marshal Kathy Perini 

Parade Grand Marshal Kathy Perini was chosen 

for all her volunteer work over the past 30 

years. Kathy attended Longden, Oak Avenue and 

Temple City High School. She has been the principal 

at Emperor School since 1993. Kathy was 

recognized as one of Temple City high School’s 

50 Distinguished Alumni during the 50th Anniversary 

Celebration of TCISD in 2004. Kathy 

was also recognized in the 29th Congressional 

District as Woman of the Year in 2009.

Honorary Grand Marshal Clark Macy 

Clark Macy, Honorary Grand Marshal, was chosen because of 

his involvement for more than 20 years with the Camellia Festival, 

which goes back a few years. He started volunteering when he was a 

members of the Executive Board assisting with publicity, play-days, 

band awards coordination, coronation rehearsal and was General 

Chairman in 1966. Clark is best known on Parade Day as the parade 

announcer, since the mid 1980s.

honored Sen. Carol Liu for her 

leadership and voting record on 

small business legislation. 

Liu received a “Summa Cum 

Laude” rating, the highest ranking 

given state legislators, for

Cooking Up Some Business is theme of 

Chamber’s fifth annual Business Expo 

For the fifth consecutive year, the Temple City 

Chamber will once again join forces with the San 

Gabriel Chamber in a special mixer and Business 

Expo to take place 5:30 – 8 p.m. Wednesday, May 

12. 

Titled Cooking Up Some Business, the event 

promises 100% of your business’s daily requirements 

for success. 

For only $85, Chamber members can have a 

six-foot table display to promote their business 

services and products. Sponsorship Court, known 

this year as Cafe Bistro, offers a prime location 

with themed decorations and added marketing 

benefits for only $145. 

Businesses may distribute brochures and marketing 

materials, talk to would-be customers 

about their services, setup sales appointments and 

even sell their products. Participation in the Business 

Expo also entitles the business to a photo 

feature in their Chamber’s newsletter following 

the event.

I have always believed in the 

advice, “An ounce of prevention 

is worth a pound of cure.” Although 

this is sound advice, it 

is often not applied. Back pain 

sufferers have often said to me 

they were taught the correct 

way to lift, but didn’t follow the 

method because it was too slow. 

Other times I’ve heard athletes 

say the muscle started to feel 

tight but they kept on playing 

thinking it would work itself 

out. Here are some guidelines 

to help prevent injuries: 

When lifting things from the 

floor, try to use the big, strong 

muscles in your legs instead of 

the smaller ones in your back. 

Bending your knees and keeping 

your back fairly straight 

without twisting the spine is the 

recommended starting position 

for a lift. That way you lift by 

straightening the knees, thereby 

getting the power of the lift 

through the legs instead of the 

back. You should also keep the 

object as close to your body as 

possible using less energy from 

your muscles. 

Staying at the computer too 

long without changing positions 

is not healthy for anyone. 

The body was designed for 

movement and you should try 

to move every 15-20 minutes. 

Even a short standing break or 

walking around the room for a 

minute or two provides relief to

the back and legs. People in 

wheelchairs also need to lift 

their bottoms off the seat every 

15-20 minutes if possible to prevent 

pressure sores from forming. 

It is also a good idea to vary 

the focusing distance of your 

eyes to exercise the eye muscles. 

If you feel a strain in your 

muscles, pay attention. Listen to 

your body as it is trying to tell 

you it is hurt or about to be hurt. 

See if a short rest stops the feeling 

of strain and then move the 

muscle slowly to test its ability 

to move. You may need to slow 

down the activity, decrease the 

intensity, or stop it altogether. 

Resting at the early stages of injury 

often leads to quicker recovery 

as it allows the repair action 

of the body to take place. 

You should use the muscles as 

you can without any strain. 

To protect yourself from injury, 

use common sense. Do 

things within the safe limit of 

your abilities. Don’t push it to 

the outer limit. Give yourself a 

“margin for error.” Pace yourself 

by allowing for rest periods 

as needed. Keep alert to what 

you are doing and any signals 

from your body warning you to 

slow down or stop. Be sure you 

get some daily exercise to keep 

you on the road to fitness. Be 

responsible in educating yourself 

about preventing injuries - 

don’t wait for someone to do it 

for you. 

Although I work mostly 

with people with injuries, I 

would be happier to educate 

them about staying healthy. 

Perhaps physical therapists will 

someday be more like dentists 

who encourage people to come 

in for yearly check-ups for preventative 

maintenance, rather 

than doing the repair work we 

do now.

Temple City High School’s Advanced 

Computer Aided Design students 

are winners. 

Three student teams recently competed 

in the Jet Propulsion 

Laboratory’s Invention Challenge 

2009. The A Ton of Bricks contest challenged 

students throughout Southern 

California to build 4-foot long bridges 

out of paper products and glue with 

maximum efficiency to hold as many 

bricks as possible at the mid-point of 

the bridge. 

Under the direction of TCHS instructor 

Dave Dickie, students spent 

weeks designing, building and testing 

their bridges. Students then traveled to 

Orange Coast College to compete in 

the JPL regional semi-final competi-

Having lived in Temple City since 

1987 and having had children attend 

Temple City schools since 1990, I have 

had the opportunity to witness many 

different, worthwhile and educational 

activities over the years. I admit, though, 

that one of my favorites is the Temple 

City High School spring musical. My 

children have been involved in the past 

15 musicals, with roles ranging from 

what I call “moving scenery” to Belle in 

Beauty and the Beast. 

The tradition of the Temple City High 

School musical predates my family, 

though, my many years. In fact, for the 

past 40 years or so Temple City High 

School has been presenting a quality production, 

the likes of which is simply not 

available in any other school district of 

which I am aware. 

I recall speaking with Sam Oramas, 

then a new dean at the high school, in 

2006 after he saw the production of 

Beauty and the Beast. “Wow,” he said. 

“The only reason I came was because it 

was one of those things I had to come 

to. Everyone told me I would be surprised, 

but I thought, ‘I have seen high 

school productions before. Seen one, 

seen them all.’”

tion. TCHS teams successfully met the 

challenge with their bridges taking 3rd, 

4th and 5th place out of 25 entries. 

Because of their high rankings, 

TCHS students were eligible to compete 

in the final competition. There 

were two categories, high school and 

JPL engineers, in the final event. 

TCHS students were successful 

again, placing 4th, 6th and 12th in their 

category. The 4th place bridge impressively 

exceeded the JPL engineer’s 3rd 

place bridge in efficiency. Also, a panel 

of four engineers presented a TCHS 

bridge with the “Most Artistic” award 

for its real-life appearance. 

This was a great learning experience 

as students and JPL engineers were able 

to share their designs with one another.

you are? What really amazes me 

is that it is all students. I went back stage 

and I didn’t see teachers anywhere. Students 

do everything. It really is amazing.” 

This year’s production is the Wizard 

of Oz and will be playing March, 12, 13 

and 14 and the San Gabriel Mission Playhouse. 

As always it will feature the work of 

many students and as it has for the past 

twenty years or so will be under the direction 

of the vocal arts teacher, Matt 

Byers, instrumental arts teacher, Bert 

Ferntheil and also relative newcomers 

Mike Kidd, the stage tech teacher and 

drama teacher Michele Zovak. 

As one can imagine, putting on such 

quality productions is not cheap. That is 

why the Temple City Schools Foundation 

will again be making a large donation 

to the cause. This is the kind of thing 

the Temple City Schools Foundation exists 

to do: support important educational 

experiences which might otherwise be 

forgotten.

Novels, classics, cookbooks, travel, 

young adult books and more are being 

sought by the Los Angeles County Library 

of Temple City. As part of the City 

of Temple City’s Golden Anniversary 

Celebration, residents, business owners, 

community organizations and clubs are 

invited to participate in “50 Books for 

50 Years.” 

The Los Angeles County Library 

Temple City Branch “wish list” for new 

books and DVDs is on display at City 

Hall. Each donated book or dvd will 

have a special donated from plaque affixed 

to each donation. 

Help the Temple City Library meet its 

goal of 50 new books and DVDs during

Patriotic News 

Blue Star Annual Review

The Blue Star Program now 

celebrates 189 military personnel 

connected to Temple City 

through our banners up and 

down Las Tunas and Rosemead 

Blvd. The program continues to 

be supported by patriotic volunteers, 

donations, prayers and 

shared hope. In 2004 it was 

started with 20 banners. The 

driving force behind the resurrection 

of the program was to 

proudly recognize the service 

and heroism of our military 

men and women and to support 

their families. 

In 2009, two annual dinners 

were provided, the first one on 

June 10, was the tenth dinner. 

Soloist Danielle Balcozar sang 

the National Anthem and entertainment 

was provided by 

The First Baptist Bell Ringers. 

Also, that evening was guest 

speaker Petty Officer 2nd Class 

Valerie Floyd, who served in 

Iraqi Freedom and Sgt. Greg 

Davis who served in the Gulf 

War. 

On Nov. 11, at the eleventh 

dinner, the entertainment was 

provided by husband and wife 

team Ralph Mohutsky and 

Victoria Strong-Mohutsky. 

Guest speaker was Army 

Chaplin Lt. Col. Milton Herring 

who had worked with the 

troops in Iraq. The entertainment 

and speaker were amazing. 

Another great thing about 

the dinners is that returning 

veterans are attending. The Blue 

Star Program in Temple City 

has truly been blessed. 

The Blue Star Program 

works with the Boy Scouts. Two 

young men, Eric Weiland and 

Ryan Watkins completed their 

Eagle Scout public service requirements 

by working on a

project for the Blue Star Program. 

More than 400 gift packages 

have been sent. Students from 

Temple City Unified School 

District as well as local churches 

wrote letters and cards for the 

different holidays. High school 

students receive community 

service hours for their participation

will take place in April and the 

two annual dinners will be in 

June and November, with dates 

to be announced later.

American Legion to remember chaplains

67th anniversary is a service at St. Mary’s 

Cathedral in San Francisco at 2 p.m. Saturday,

In the spirit of a great humanitarian, I’d like to share 

one of my favorite quotes: “Everybody can be great because 

anybody can serve. You don’t have to make your subject 

and verb agree to serve. You only need a heart full of 

grace, a soul generated by love.” – Dr. Martin Luther King,

I’m extremely proud that 

character education is the cornerstone 

of all instructional, athletic 

and extra-curricular programs 

in the Temple City Unified 

School District. 

Leading by example, teachers, 

administrators and support staff 

are passionate about educating 

and guiding students to become 

caring, compassionate individuals. 

This process begins in kindergarten, 

continues through

graduation and guides them 

throughout their adult life. 

TCUSD students shine in so many ways! 

At Temple City High School, students connect with 

their community by volunteering countless hours 

through the Community Service Learning Program. 

Another wonderful program at the High School is the 

Peer Listening Program where students help one another 

cope with life’s challenges. 

Students at Cloverly and Emperor Elementary Schools 

wrote letters to men and women serving in our Armed 

Forces. 

Students at Temple City High School and La Rosa and 

Longden Elementary Schools will be collecting Pennies 

for Patients benefiting the Leukemia Foundation. 

At the Dr. Doug Sears Learning Center, students distributed 

hand-made holiday cards and sang songs for 

senior citizens groups. 

Under the direction of Instructor Richard Meyer, Oak 

Avenue Intermediate School student musicians Give 

Bach, reaching out to special needs students at Five Acres 

School and the Starlight Foundation. 

TCUSD has formed strong partnerships throughout 

our community. The District is currently working with 

the City of Temple City identifying potential joint facility 

projects to benefit our students and community. The 

Temple City Chapter of Kiwanis International recognizes 

and honors our students each month with their Student 

of the Month Program. Dedicated Kiwanis members also

This year, TCUSD’s very own Kathy Perini (Principal 

at Emperor Elementary School) is being honored as the 

2010 Camellia Festival Grand Marshal. Also being honored 

at this year’s Camellia Parade are TCUSD’s Teachers 

of the Year! On Feb. 27th, District Teacher of the Year 

Patricia Wenzel will ride in the Parade along with site 

Teachers of the Year Samantha Jennings (Longden Elementary 

School), Sandy Johnson (Emperor Elementary 

School), Mary McGuinness (Oak Avenue Intermediate 

School) and Wendy Van Thiel (Temple City High 

School). 

Having strong character education as their foundation, 

our students excel in academics. 

Every one of our six comprehensive schools scored 

above 800 to excel in the California Department of 

Education’s Academic Performance Index. Temple City 

High School again received a 2009 Silver Award from 

the U.S. News and World Report as one of the nation’s 

best high schools. Emperor Elementary School, with a 

925 API score, was recognized by the California Business 

for Education Excellence for their high academic 

achievement and for narrowing the achievement gap. 

Emperor and La Rosa Elementary Schools were eligible 

and applied for California Distinguished School Awards. 

In the past, every one of our comprehensive schools has 

received this recognition. 

Students also excel in athletics, performing arts and 

other extra-curricular activities. 

Our outstanding High School performing arts program 

will present The Wizard of Oz at the San Gabriel 

Mission Playhouse on March 12, 13 and 14. The Oak 

Avenue Intermediate School and Temple City High 

School orchestras and marching bands give amazing 

concerts and performances year-after-year. The TCHS 

Band and Auxiliaries performed at the Pasadena Tournament 

of Roses VIP Dinner! 

We are a District that comes together for our students’ 

success. In doing so, we are working together 

collaboratively in a Professional Learning Community, 

focusing on teaching and learning. We’re harnessing our 

energy to provide systematic and time-sensitive interventions 

to meet individual student needs. 

I must acknowledge that this is a very difficult time 

for public schools throughout our State. However, even 

during these challenging budget times, I am constantly 

amazed at the heart and dedication of TCUSD’s teachers, 

administrators, support staff, parents and community 

in focusing on student success.

Each week, the Temple City Kiwanis Club recognizes outstanding 

students and their teachers from Cloverly, 

Emperor, Longden and the Dr. Doug Sears Learning 

Center. 

Kiwanis treats students and their teacher to 

lunch. Students receive a certificate, a letter for their parents, a 

bumper sticker, a gift certificate from The Hat restaurant and a photograph 

of them receiving their award. Their photo is also published 

in Temple City Life, Mid Valley News and displayed in the Temple 

City Unified School District lobby. 

Temple City Kiwanis has been serving the community since 1939. 

Members are dedicated men and women who desire to make a difference 

in the quality of life for the youth of Temple City. Kiwanis 

meets at 12 noon each Tuesday at the Bahooka Family Restaurant.

Weinkei is 12 years old and has a brother and twin sister 

named Pookei, who is a former Student of the Month. 

Weinkei enjoys drawing, painting and cooking. Weinkei

the Adventurer Team and the fun educational activities.” 

The best thing that ever happened was when she got a 

laptop computer with a webcam. Personal goals are to 

prevent global warming, build a home for orphans so they 

can have a happy life, get straight A’s, go to college and 

give some money to charity. 

Christopher is 12 years old and has one older brother. 

He enjoys History, Science, airplanes and computers. 

Christopher said, “The best things about Oak are the great 

helpful teachers, the large library and clean campus. The 

best thing that ever happened was being born. Personal 

goals are to end all wars, build a soup kitchen, go to college, 

get a good job and succeed in life.

publishing a book, getting good grades, attending Stanford 

or Princeton and becoming a pharmacist to create medicines

Lynn is 11 years old and has an older sister. Lynn enjoys 

music, math, science, reading, swimming and watching 

movies with her sister. Lynn said, “The best things 

about Emperor are the great teachers, fun classes and an 

amazing Principal.” The best thing that ever happened was 

going on the Catalina trip and coming to Emperor. Personal 

goals are to have less pollution, build an ice cream 

factory that creates unique flavors, go to Cal Poly Pomona, 

become a chemical engineer and discover a new galaxy. 

Oliver is 11 years old and enjoys basketball, baseball, 

soccer and science. Oliver said, “The best things about 

Emperor are the nice teachers, good kids and it’s fun!” The 

best thing that ever happened was winning a big award in 

baseball. Personal goals are to develop a cure for cancer, 

build a house for himself, win a soccer championship, get 

good grades in reading and meet new people.

become a sports therapist and play basketball at the college 

level. 

Kiwanis Club of Temple City honored Julie Wang, Kevin 

Bowman and Tyler Hazlett from Longden Elementary 

School, Jan. 26. Attending with the students was their 

teacher, Ms. Samantha Jennings.

Kiwanis Club of Temple City honored Julie Wang, 

Kevin Bowman and Tyler Hazlett, three outstanding students 

from Longden Elementary School, Jan. 26. Attending 

with the students was their teacher, Ms. Samantha 

Jennings. 

Julie is 11 years old and has an older sister. She enjoys 

playing basketball and drawing. Julie said, “The best things 

about Longden are the terrific teachers, an awesome Principal 

and the great city.” The best thing that ever happened 

was going to Washington D.C. with friends from 

school. Personal goals are to provide food for the poor, 

build a pyramid of playing cards that won’t fall when 

touched, be a famous viola player, fantastic basketball 

player and become an amazing artist. 

Kevin is 11 years old and has a younger brother. He 

enjoys playing baseball, video games, drums and Boy 

Scouts. Kevin said, “The best things about Longden are

the large playground, new technology and my friends.” The best thing 

that ever happened was going to Barack Obama’s inauguration. If he 

could change one thing it would be not to get stung by a bee the night 

before his first All Star game. Personal goals are to build a giant mansion 

for his family, become a professional baseball player, become a 

scientist and to graduate from USC. 

Tyler is 11 years old and has an older brother and sister. He enjoys 

playing baseball and modern warfare on his PS3. Tyler said, “The best 

things about Longden are my teachers, art and social studies.” The 

best thing that ever happened was jumping off a 60 foot rock into Lake 

Havasu. Personal goals are to build a frappuccino world, win a baseball 

tournament, get on the honor roll and do a triple back flip on a 

trampoline.

The Verdugo Hills Showtime Chorus of San Gabriel, a 

chapter of Sweet Adelines International, announces its Singing 

Valentines service to Temple City and surrounding communities 

in the San Gabriel Valley for Feb. 12, 13 and 14. For 

only $40, recipients will be treated to a love-song serenade 

performed in 4-part harmony by a women’s barbershop 

quartet at the location and time of one’s choice. Orders placed
