Continuing Education and Public Service is<br />
the administrative unit of UT Knoxville that<br />
extends academic courses, educational services,<br />
and other programs to the non-traditional<br />
student . While most people who participate in<br />
the programs are adults, persons of all ages<br />
and academic levels can be counted among<br />
the people who enroll in the credit and non-credit<br />
offerings of the Division .<br />
Programs and courses are based upon<br />
student needs and desires, whether for selfmotivated<br />
learning ; for leisure and recreational<br />
programs ; or for professional promotion, certification,<br />
licensure, relicensure, or mid-career<br />
changes . The Division provides these educational<br />
opportunities through program coordination<br />
and development of the five departments :<br />
Department of Conferences, Department of<br />
Independent Study, English Language Institute,<br />
Non-Credit Community Programs, and the<br />
University Evening School . Specific programs<br />
and services of each department are described<br />
on the following pages .<br />
The Administative Systems office provides<br />
computerized and technical support services<br />
to the Division, its academic associates and<br />
clients . Areas of support include Information<br />
Management, Marketing and Public Relations<br />
and Telecommunications and Media .<br />

UT Conferences, housed in the Conference<br />
Center in downtown Knoxville, provides<br />
management services to individuals or groups<br />
who desire to hold a high quality convention,<br />
conference or meeting anywhere in the state of<br />
Tennessee or across the United States.<br />
Utilizing the new Conference Center, statewide<br />
University system facilities, major hotels<br />
and convention centers across Tennessee and<br />
the U.S ., the department assists University<br />
organizations and outside groups in designing<br />
programs to meet the needs of clients . The<br />
staff provides professional guidance and<br />
management for small group meetings as well<br />
as for major conventions of several thousand<br />
delegates . Consulting and support services<br />
range from planning and budgeting to lodging,<br />
food services, speakers, promotional material,<br />
meeting rooms and all details to assure a<br />
successful event . Programs which meet appropriate<br />
criteria qualify for Continuing Education<br />
Credits, which become a permanent record<br />
maintained by the Division . Transcripts are<br />
available upon written request .<br />
The department cooperates with UT CTV to<br />
provide teleconferencing services for the<br />
University and community . Professional groups<br />
and interested individuals may arrange interactive<br />
videoconferencing to locations worldwide.<br />
Arrangements may also be made to receive<br />
(downlink) and to transmit (uplink) program-<br />

The English Language Institute (ELI) is a<br />
non-credit language-study program of The University<br />
of Tennessee, Knoxville . It is designed<br />
to assist students in their pursuit of career<br />
goals or educational objectives in the United<br />
States .<br />
The ELI offers intensive courses for the<br />
improvement of student skills in the English<br />
language . International students, visitors, and<br />
professionals have successfully learned<br />
English through study in the ELI .<br />
The courses emphasize the development of<br />
communicative ability in listening, speaking,<br />
reading, and writing . Faculty members are<br />
trained in teaching English to speakers of other<br />
languages with differing national backgrounds<br />
and varying proficiency in English .<br />
The curriculum consists of eight proficiency<br />
levels : 101-108, Introductory through Pre-<br />
Academic.<br />
Each level meets 4-5 periods each day with<br />
