more than 3.5 million manuscripts, 2 million<br />

. The UT Knoxville Libraries currently<br />
subscribe to more than 14,000 periodicals and<br />
other serial titles . The Libraries' membership in<br />
the Association of Research Libraries reflects<br />
the University's emphasis on graduate instruction<br />
and research and the support of large,<br />
comprehensive collections of library materials<br />
on a permanent basis .<br />
The UT Knoxville Libraries consists of the<br />
main library (the John C. Hodges Library), five<br />
branches on the Knoxville campus (the Agriculture-Veterinary<br />
Medicine Library, the Cartographic<br />
Information Center, the Music Library,<br />
Special Collections, and the University Archives),<br />
and the Social Work Library in Nashville .<br />
The John C . Hodges Main Library (1015<br />
Volunteer Blvd .) is a 350,000 square-foot facility<br />
housing collections in all subject areas . The<br />
Hodges Library has comfortable study space for<br />
more than 2,000 people, 308 graduate student<br />
carrels, and 192 faculty studies .<br />
The Hodges Library's research holdings are<br />
augmented by Reference Services and by Interlibrary<br />
Services. Reference Services provides<br />
research assistance and access to commercially<br />
available databases . Within the library, users<br />
may also search a number of CD-ROM databases<br />
at no charge. Interlibrary Services borrows<br />
monographs and obtains copies of other<br />
materials from libraries around the world .<br />
Library holdings are accessible via a sophisticated<br />
on-line catalog which can be searched<br />
in the Hodges Library, the branch libraries, and<br />
from home and office computers . The Online<br />
Library Information System (OLIS) also provides<br />
access to a wide range of information resources<br />
available over the Internet .<br />
The services and facilities of the University<br />
Libraries are accessible to persons with disabilities<br />
. Adaptive equipment such as a Kurzweil<br />
"Data excludes Law Library faculty and statistics.<br />
Personal Reader and TDD are available at the<br />
Hodges Library .<br />
The Agriculture-Veterinary Medicine Library<br />
(Room A-113, Veterinary Teaching<br />
Hospital) has a strong collection in agriculture ;<br />
veterinary, comparative and human medicine ;<br />
and related biological sciences . It has a wideranging<br />
audiovisual collection and an extensive<br />
reference collection .<br />
The Cartographic Information Center<br />
(Room 15, basement of the Hoskins Library,<br />
Cumberland Avenue & 15th Street) contains a<br />
worldwide collection of over 300,000 maps<br />
covering all subjects. Maps are received from<br />
the U .S . Geological Survey, Defense Mapping<br />
Agency, and the National Ocean Survey .<br />
Maps, atlases, globes, and books relating to<br />
cartography may be borrowed for reference,<br />
research, and teaching .<br />
The Music Library (301 Music Building)<br />
has a comprehensive collection of music and<br />
music literature, including books, scores, audio<br />
and video recordings, current periodicals,<br />
and microfilm . All materials in the Library of<br />
Congress "M" classification are located here.<br />
The Special Collections Library (2nd<br />
floor, west wing, of the Hoskins Library) is a<br />
repository of regional and local materials,<br />
Tennesseana, and other specialties, including<br />
legislative papers and mementoes of many<br />
Tennessee political figures . Special Collections<br />
materials are of particular interest to scholars in<br />
the fields of history, political science, social<br />
sciences, biological sciences, and the arts .<br />
The University Archives (Room 2,<br />
Hoskins Library) contains official records of the<br />
University ; items published officially and unofficially<br />
by its units, departments, and agencies ;<br />
and other materials that document University of<br />
Tennessee life .<br />
The Social Work Library (1720 West End<br />
Avenue, Nashville) serves College of Social<br />
Work students in field practice across the state .<br />
The library has a working collection of materials<br />
in social work and related disciplines .<br />
The Law Library on the Knoxville campus<br />
and the libraries located on the campuses in<br />
Chattanooga, Martin, Memphis, and Tullahoma<br />
are individually administered . Each library at<br />
