Dear reader,
People from all over the world work in Siemens
Technopark. The call center in particular
employs people with the widest range of mother
tongues. Yet other companies too place great
value on the national diversity of their
employees. This cosmopolitanism has helped
a lot to animate our business location.
Likewise, most of the nearly 50 companies on
our grounds are successfully engaged
internationally. Some have additional branches
in other countries. We are particularly proud
that global companies like TACR have their
headquarters in our park.
If Berlin is a window to the world, then Technopark
is part of the attractive items in the showcase.
You can gain your own impression of the

We‘re Working to Satisfy You
The customer satisfaction survey
made it clear: Tenants and owners
in Technopark want improvements
in many areas. The initial measures
have been instigated. By the end of
February, bulletin boards are to be
installed in the foyers, elevators,
kitchens and bathrooms introducing
the superintendents of the various
buildings–with photos, phone numbers
and e-mail addresses. The park
No Frustration Despite Frust
The frosty temperatures in December
have had their impact on the
roadway work in Siemens Technopark.
„We‘re waiting for the ground to thaw
out,“ Project Director Simone Kastner
said. Some areas of the construction
site are frozen thick, currently making
it impossible to begin the roadway
work. This holds particularly true for
the parking lot in front of Building 1.
The construction managers frequently
check whether it‘s possible to go
ahead with the manhole work. As
soon as the ground is frost-free, work
is to resume again–unless there‘s a lot
of rain. The partial standstill needn‘t
have an effect on the schedule. If the
temperatures in the coming months
are mild, the current delay can be
easily made up again.
Despite the weather, work is being
conducted at the construction site in

the redesign of the system was sent
to some new clients. In the future,
the routes in the park (whether to

Oliver Rogowski and Dennis Berchner
know every building in Siemens
Technopark. The architects have worked
at the site for more than 20 years. The
Berliners met when studying at the
Higher Technical College and then
worked at the former Siemens Facility
Management Company. In 1995 they
became self-employed.
Their R & B Baumanagement GmbH
not only serves projects in Technopark,
such as the remodeling of Buildings 1
und 16, but is also involved in many
construction sites around Berlin.
Parknews: What are strengths of
your architectural office?
Rogowski: Our office focuses on the
renovation of old buildings and profitable
construction. We serve a broad range of
buildings, from residential buildings to
office and administrative buildings to
industrial buildings.
Parknews: Your current projects
include the installation of foundations in
the Siemens turbine plant in Huttenstrasse.
What‘s that about?
Berchner: The largest gas turbines
ever are being built in Huttenstrasse.
The machines necessary for the construction
have to function with the greatest
precision. Therefore, new foundations

production bay, which is a
century old. They are designed
for a bearing capacity of 300 tons
with a maximum sag of 0.05 mm
at 30 meters in length. The
foundations are completely isolated
from vibration because outside
vibrations could cause the tool
machines not to malfunction.
Parknews: How are we
supposed to imagine these
foundations?
Rogowski: One foundation
has a surface area of 450 square
meters at a depth of 8 meters. To
lower the ground water level, we
installed a water-tight trough,
which you can imagine as an
inverted can of preserves stuck into the
ground. A 1.40-m-thick reinforced steel
column installed at a depth of 12 m seals
the whole thing downward. All the parts
have been installed while operations were
underway.
Parknews: That sounds like a huge
challenge...
Berchner: The sheet piling walls
cannot be rammed in because the
production would not tolerate the
vibrations. We therefore have to press
them in, without any vibrations, at very
high pressure. Survey specialists have
checked the entire building over and
over again to assure that the existing bay
foundations and facades have not shifted
horizontally or vertically. In addition to
the logistics, we had to solve various
marginal issues, such as the air
purification: Our construction machines
are normally gasoline-driven–which is
not permitted in a closed bay.
Parknews: How many foundations
are you building in the bay in all?
Berchner: A total of 6 foundations
are planned. Two are still in the planning
phase, a third is being built, the work on
a fourth is to start soon. Two foundations
are finished, optimized in terms of costs
and deadlines.
Parknews: …which brings us to your
„profitable construction.“ What do you
mean by that?
Rogowski: We deliver very high
quality at a very precisely defined price.
Our approach to construction projects
differs from that normally taken by
architects. We‘re able at a very early

point in time to compute the costs of a
construction project in great detail. And
the developers can count on these cost
estimates also being met.
Parknews: How do you do that?
Exceeding cost estimates actually
happens all the time, doesn‘t it?
Berchner: We put a lot of time in at
the start of planning. We calculate the
costs to be incurred so exactly as if we
were billing for the finished building.
Masonry, plastering, windows, interior
walls, tiles–everything flows into the
calculations. If the developer requests
changes, these are documented and the
totals recalculated. Each part of the work
is determined in advance. With this
transparent procedure, developers know
exactly what they‘re getting for their
money.
Parknews: Then public-sector
contractors must be waiting in line for
your services.
Rogowski: We also work for the
public sector. We completely renovated
an administrative building for the
District of Spandau: The former revenue
service office was gutted and energetically
renovated. Today, the social security
offices are located there. We of course
also stayed within the budget on that
project, too.

BSH Bosch und Siemens Hausgeräte
GmbH celebrated the topping out of
its new laundry technology center on 27
January. With fondue, meatballs and other
goodies, around one hundred guests
celebrated the completion of the shell.

be ready for occupancy this summer.
The technology center has a special
significance for BSH. „The building is
a visible expression of our recognition
of Berlin as a key business location,“
Matthias Ginthum, Director of Clothing
Care Products said. „We‘re thus assuring
more than 700 high-quality jobs for the
city.“ Employees will be developing the
washers and driers of the future in the
laundry technology center.
Planners placed great value on
sustainability. Laboratories, offices and
meeting rooms are to be heated with
the heat generated by ongoing washing
machine tests. The test rooms will be
cooled in summer with a ventilation
system and cooling towers. The climate
will profit from this state-of-the-art
technology: More than 1,500 tons of
carbon dioxide will be saved per year.

The company name could mislead
outsiders: „YACHT TECCON“ is
reminiscent of water sports, sailboats,
regattas, exclusive yachting clubs or even
ship building. The latter is the closest.
YACHT TECCON Engineering GmbH
und Co. KG is in fact a service provider
for engineering and IT Services. The
company belongs to the Randstad Group.
It procures engineers, technicians and
technical drawers for companies looking
for temporary employees. „We are an
all-round engineering and IT service
provider,“ declared Torsten Hebel, who
is responsible for the YACHT TECCON
office opened in Siemens Technopark in
August. „This is what sets us apart from
our competition.“
Nationwide YACHT TECCON has
about 3,000 employees–called
„professionals“–who work on assignments
or projects at client requests. This
includes both planning, design and
development specialists–from technical
drawers to engineers–as well as IT
specialists. The professionals come
from all sectors: from machinery and
plant construction to the energy and
electrical industry to aircraft and ship
construction. „We cover all facets of
engineering,“ Hebel said, referring to
the know-how of his engineers. „With
the expertise of our employees, we
are able to support the entire aircraft
design process, for example.“
YACHT TECCON has three offices
in Berlin. Torsten Hebel and his two
assistants in Technopark attend to the
human resource needs of Siemens,
among other clients. „Our office
is responsible Berlin-wide for all
Siemens lines,“ the 56-year-old said.
Hebel has numerous professionals
currently under contract who are
on assignment with Siemens. The
Technopark team moreover procures
specialists for companies in Spandau
and the greater Berlin metropolitan
area, particularly in railway and plant
construction. Some of the employees
are hired out temporarily to companies.
Others execute specific jobs within the
framework of contracts for work and
services. „We act like an engineering
office that receives a development or
design task for a component,“ Hebel
explained. Such projects are processed

subsidiary is also in the business of
personnel recruitment. „If a client is
searching for a particular employee,
we‘re happy to act as an HR consultant and
search for a suitable candidate.“ Clients
may also first „test“ the new employees
during a temporary assignment and
hire them later on a permanent basis if
everything goes smoothly.
Hebel qualifies the current situation
for engineers on the labor market
as „tense.“ Employers place heavy
demands on employees. Both allrounders
and specialist for particular
niches are in demand. „It is a challenging
task to procure the right engineer
for a technical project,“ according
to the Senior Sales & Team Manager.
YACHT TECCON therefore has a pool
of qualified specialists, so that suitable
candidates can be found quickly when
needed. On the other hand, the current
economic situation is stimulating
business. When the economy begins
to heat up again after a lull, companies
make use of engineering service
providers. „Companies aren‘t sure
where this train is going,“ Torsten Hebel

explained. „They‘re thus safe when they
stick with workers on a project-specific
basis.“ Frequently a classic employment
relation develops from the temporary
contracts.
YACHT TECCON is therefore always
on the lookout for new professionals–
who normally apply for positions via
the company‘s website. Candidates are
also found via traditional portals, such
as Stepstone or meinestadt.de. The
company is also present at business
contact fairs of universities and
technical colleges in order to acquire
new professionals.
The choice of Technopark as a
business location was easy due to its
proximity to Siemens. Clients appreciate
it when their support is nearby, Torsten
Hebel is convinced: „We respond
quickly when needed and can even get
there by foot.“ YACHT TECCON Business
Unit Manager Constanze Kamphausen
is also pleased: „We belong here,“ the
43-year-old is convinced. „The diversity
of the companies at the site was decisive
for us. I‘d lease twice the space without
hesitation.“ Kamphausen‘s vision:

Some Technopark visitors wonder
why they sometimes see parents with
strollers and groups of kids with their
teachers amongst the big industrial
machinery and heavy trucks around
Building 4. The little nippers attend the
daycare center on the grounds. The
center opened about a year ago.
The FRÖBEL Group Daycare Center is
pleased with its reception. „With nearly
one hundred kids, we‘re practically full
now,“ Director Bärbel Behrend reported.
„We have pre-registrations into 2012!“
Most of the kids, ages 6 months to
nearly 6 years, come from the
neighborhood. In about one-third of
the cases, at least one parent works at
the Technopark grounds or a Siemens
site nearby. German kids make up the
largest percentage, but there are also
kids at the center from immigrant

families, such as Russians, Poles, Turks
and Arabs. To help parents combine
family and working life, the Daycare
Center is opened from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m.
A Different Kind of Footcare
Apart from the generous opening
hours, it is the concept behind the
Daycare Center in Technopark that has
convinced parents to register their kids
there. FRÖBEL institutions place great
value on early education for children
and implement the educational
program required by each federal state.
The children are to be given more than
the minimum standard required by
law–true to the basic principle of
Friedrich Fröbel that all children should
be „free, thinking, independent human
beings.“ „It‘s our goal to make the kids
ready for school and for life,“ Bärbel
Behrend underscored. Key components
of the concept are bilingual interaction,
early musical instruction and health
and exercise. The program is convincing

for parents.
„We brought the mothers and
fathers on board from the start,“ the
55-year-old said. The concept is
explained in parents evenings and
conferences.
In all, 17 employees assure the wellbeing
of the children, including a cook,
because Fröbel Daycare Centers place
great value on freshly prepared meals.
„Food must be healthy, but it also has to
taste good,“ teacher Behrend said. The
menu therefore regularly includes
delicious meals, such as pasta with
tomato sauce, potato-spinach soup or
baked fish. The team includes a native
speaker from Scotland who speaks
English with the children. Girls and
boys get a feel for the language through
games, become accustomed to speech
melody and learn English songs.
The children have meanwhile
conquered the Technopark grounds.
The little ones are fascinated with all
the construction work going on. From
here they regularly set out on
excursions, such as to Jungfernheide
park or to the children‘s theater. „We
feel like we‘re in good hands in
Technopark,“ Bärbel Behrend stated.
The neighbors in Building 4 also help
out: „The Media Academy is always
there for us,“ the Daycare Center
director said happily. „They help us
during parties and in difficult
situations, such as during fire alarms.“

trademark of Siemensstadt. From the
observation platform approx. 70 meters
high, you can enjoy a spectacular view
of the Technopark and the surrounding

November. In the well-appointed
teaching kitchen of SBK Health Worlds on
Rohrdamm, the amateur chefs produced
crispy cookies. To do so, they had brought
45 kilos of the finest ingredients.
Produced were 165 running meters of
sweet baked goods. The nearly 2,000
cookies were distributed to the 450
employees of SELLBYTEL Berlin on St.
Nicklaus‘s Day. „It was a lot of fun,“ said
initiative manager Damian Jeziorowski.
„We will definitively do this again.“

therefore scheduled five special tower
tours with Michael Voigtländer from the
Office for Industrial Culture. The first
dates have already been set: On Tuesday,
22 March, and on Thursday, 12 May,
each at 4:00 p.m., those interested can
tour the industrial landmark. There‘s
a lot to discover–from the free-floating
winding staircase to the falcons‘ nest to
the four tower clocks. With a diameter
of 7 meters, they are Europe‘s largest
electro-mechanical clocks.
The tours are limited to a maximum
of 20 persons. Thus, it is necessary to

Upon request, Michael Voigtländer
offers further tours for companies
or groups, including bicycle tours of
Berlin‘s industrial history, not only in
Siemensstadt. For further information,

Reading is in
Technopark also participated in the
7th National Reading Day last November.
The FRÖBEL Daycare Center in Building
4 invited Minister Martina Steffen-Elis
from the Siemensstadt Evangelical
Congregation to read aloud to the children.
She selected the book, One Snowy Night
by M. Christina Butler. The theologian
then distributed bookmarks to the kids.
„Reading aloud is very important,“
Steffen-Elis was convinced. „Unfortunately,
a lot of kids don‘t get this at home
anymore.“ The initiative „Let‘s read aloud“
sponsored by the Reading Foundation and
DIE ZEIT is intended to instill in kids an
excitement for reading and reading aloud.

More exercise! That is probably one
of the most popular new year‘s
resolutions. Everybody knows that
regular exercise increases well-being,
promotes health and can help to lower
the risks of lifestyle diseases, such as
heart attack and obesity.
„When you max out physically,
you‘re more resilient in everyday life,“
Thomas Barthel is convinced. The
owner of the Barthel Sports and
Therapy Center cares for around 150
men and women in his fitness and
wellness studio at Siemensdamm
43/44. In doing so, the fitness trainer
relies on health-oriented training with
all-round personal service. His team
includes teachers of martial arts,
aerobics and Capoeira. „We know each
customer and deliberately address his
or her individual needs,“ the 37-yearold
assured. Barthel‘s mother
Waltraud, who regularly helps out in
reception and even makes her presence
felt in courses, adds some familial flair
to the fitness studio.
A personal training program for
work on numerous cardiovascular
devices and machines is created for
Movement‘s the Key
Thomas Barthel Helps to Straighten Out the Body
new members at the start. As needed,
exercises can be oriented, just as in a
regular fitness studio, on muscle and
strength building or, in the case of
rehabilitation patients, on restoring
the range of motion. All training
equipment is constructed so that
merely a single side of the body can be
exercised if necessary. Thomas Barthel
monitor the his members‘ training
carefully, provides assistance when
necessary and adapts plans if someone
cannot do the exercises or is either
overtaxed or unchallenged.
Additionally, there is a wellbalanced
range of courses at the
Barthel Sports and Therapy Center,
such as aerobics, strength endurance
training with dumbbells, Capoeira for
children, self-defense, rehabilitation
sports or „50plus“ gymnastics. Upon
request, Barthel also acts as a personal
trainer for members of his studio. This
ranges from accompaniment during
jogging or Nordic walking in the park
to nutrition consulting to support in
the purchase of the right running
shoes—at no additional cost. Barthel
has even successfully prepared some

of his customers for participation in
the half marathon. The 37-year-old
Berlin native also works a lot with
children. Most groups come to exercise
in the studio because they don‘t have
enough space in their own facilities.
However, courses are also offered
directly in playgroups.
Membership in the Barthel Sports
and Therapy Center costs less than
EUR 30 per month plus a one-time
admission fee and a service fee every 6
months. Family members and children
receive discounts. People who don‘t
want to sign long-term contracts can
pay a higher monthly fee to likewise
profit from everything the studio has
to offer. „Some Siemens employees
who are only in Berlin for a short time
but don‘t want to lose out on their
regular athletic training take
advantage of this offer,“ Barthel noted.
The studio is also a cooperation
partner with the health care insurance
agencies. Hence, in certain cases, such
as for rehabilitation patients, training
or participation in the courses is
covered by the health care agencies.
Included in the price is also the use of
the sauna, which is open on Mondays
and Thursdays.
A new martial arts room is currently
being built at the Barthel Sports and
Therapy Center. The owner is
undertaking all the necessary work
himself. He also made use of his
carpentry skills when he took over the
studio in 2007: „The rooms were
completely run down at that time,“ the
37-year-old told. „I rebuilt everything
myself–from the ceilings to the walls
to the reception desk.“ The new martial
arts room is slated to open in January
2011. The entryway will also be
updated soon and furnished with
directional signs. Barthel hopes that
the entrance to his fitness studio on
the northern side of the Kaufmitte
Shopping Center, right next to the S-Bahn
bridge, will then be easier to find.

Culinary Technopark
Soft lighting, cozy corners, groovy lounge music–
Dallmayr Café & Bar in Building 1 of Siemens Technopark
has become the favorite contact point of a lot of employees
on the grounds since opening last autumn. Instead of
hastily gulping down a sandwich at work, employees and
guests of the companies in the park can now celebrate their
breaks in style. From 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., the friendly
bartenders Grit Püchel, Monika Lemke and Christiane
Neugeboren provide their customers with snacks and
drinks. The menu includes scrumptious specialty coffees,
diverse sandwich options, pretzel sticks, cold and warm
snacks for lunch and pastries and cakes for tea time.
The ample assortment is also well received. Each month
the employees sell nearly 3,000 sandwiches, baguettes and
pretzel sticks. They also sell more than 2,000 wienerwursts,
meatballs and currywursts. Also popular are the pizzas,

daily. „Customers are happy to have something warm for
lunch and to be able to eat something different each day,“
café manager Andreas Dorn said. Rolls, cakes and pastries
are supplied fresh every day from a local Berlin bakery.
The prices are surprisingly inexpensive: A wurst costs
EUR 1.30. Schnitzel and potato salad cost EUR 1.80 each.
Sandwiches cost between EUR 1.40 and 2.50. The chicken
noodle dish can be had for EUR 1.90. Pizza is the most
expensive meal at EUR 4. You can even treat yourself to the
special coffees. Latte macchiato with flavouring costs EUR
2, which is not even half the price charged in the large chain
coffeeshops. If you‘re satisfied with Café crème, you won‘t
even pay one euro.
Even outside the business hours of the Dallmayr Café &
Bar, you won‘t starve in Technopark: The vending machine
station across from the café is open round the clock. Coffee
lovers needn‘t miss out on their accustomed quality of cappuccino,
latte macchiato or
other specialties, for
the vending machines

you‘re working late or
at night, you can pull
sandwiches, bread and

aristocrat. Günter Liebke‘s godmother
was considered a countess, but was a
rich bourgeois who had married for the
title. Joachim Plesse can trace his inlaw‘s
family history back to the
reformers Martin Luther and Philipp
Melanchthon.

The three Siemens retirees occupy
themselves intensively with genealogy.
For many years they have belonged to
the Working Group for Family History
of the Siemens Cultural Group. Werner
Sieg became interested in his own roots
during a meeting with relatives. A
cousin had asked about the origin of his
last name at the time. Her mother, the
sister of his father Sieg, had a completely
different name at birth. Werner Sieg
began to look into the matter. In the
course of his research, he found that

the his family‘s name could be spelled
in 40 different ways. The reason: The
priest noted the name of each new born
child as he understood it–if he knew
how to write at all...
The results of many years of
genealogical research are remarkable:
Werner Sieg was able to trace is ancestors
back to 1700. Joachim Plesse found a
family member from 1637. And Günter
Liebke found his family name in a Danzig
citizens‘ register from the 15th century,
though whether the entry actually relates
to a forebear of his cannot be said with
certainty.
During their research, the genealogists
of the Siemens Cultural Group were able
to take advantage of one of Germany‘s
largest genealogical libraries. In the
basement of the administrative building
on Nonnendammallee is housed a treasure

trove of books and journals totaling
around 4,000 volumes. The German
Genealogical Handbook of Civil Families,
where mainly well-to-do families are
entered, is completely extent from 1889
to 2009. The Internet has also greatly
facilitated genealogical research. People
today can find results when searching
for ancestors at websites such as
genealogy.net and familysearch.org. Yet
the World Wide Web cannot completely
replace on-site searches at vital statics
offices (for personal data as of 1871) and
church archives. Marriage and birth
certificates are archived in the vital
statistics offices and may only be viewed
by „authorized persons,“ i.e. direct
family members. Church registers are
also helpful to research distant family
lines. Some are already online, thanks to
the on-site efforts of genealogy
researchers (ortsfamilien-buecher.de).
The Staatsbibliothek (State Library) also
keeps a lot of literature on this topic.
The Working Group for Family
History is even open to people who do
not work at Siemens. Anyone interested
is warmly invited to attend a meeting.
The group meets on the second and
fourth Wednesday of each month at 2:00
p.m. in the administrative building of
Siemens AG. Please call in advance: (+49
30) 341 04 24. The members will be
pleased to help you if you are thinking
about tracing your family history. They
can provide tips as to which authorities
to contact and what archives to visit.
However, you will have to put together
your family tree by yourself.

Managing Director Caroline Wolter
Siemens Technopark Berlin is one of
Berlin‘s largest industrial parks. The
enormous grounds extend over 480,000
square meters. So that people unfamiliar
with the park can find their way, an
elaborate navigation system was
installed in the park in the spring of
2008. The system consists of 86 pylons
which indicate the way to the individual
houses and display the tenants and their
logos in front of the buildings.
The Berlin company Dr. Helmut
Wolter GmbH produced the columns.
The family business is specialized in
high-quality complete solutions for
outdoor advertising from the draft phase
to the execution. The company produces,
for example, decals, stickers, banners,
lettering and lighted advertising. In a
villa in the Westend Section of Berlin,
workers fiddle with inscription designs,
print folios and assemble the signs. In
the large, idyllically located property,
there is enough space on several floors
for plotters, laminators and reel slitters.
Nearly everything can be printed—from
door signs to machines to vehicles to
building facades. Upon request, the
company will also provide the layout for
the lettering.
„We used coated aluminum cassettes
for the navigation system in Siemens
Technopark,“ company head Caroline
Wolter said. „We produced the
inscriptions according to specifications

using a digital printing process and
attached them to the pylons with
adhesives.“ When a new tenant moves
into the Technopark, the inscription on
the pylon is changed accordingly. Dr.
Wolter GmbH is also responsible for the
lettering on the buildings in the park.
The company had its beginnings in
the 1950s. The company‘s founder
Helmut Wolter used a silk-screen process
to produce so-called „transfers,“ which
were stuck to ashtrays and drinking
glasses. The breakthrough came when
the former Deutsche Bundesbahn
(German Railways) became the first key
account. Dr. Wolter received the order to
produce all special lettering for the
wagons, from the DB logo to the „no
smoking“ signs. Today the company has
a clientele of several hundred diverse
customers, including Commerzbank,
the Berlin Street Cleaning Works and the
Fire Department.
The company has maintained
business relations with Siemens for
decades: „We supplied inscriptions forty
years ago for the Siemens measuring
device plant and the former teletype
plant,“ said Bärbel Ascher, who has spent
her entire working life at Dr. Wolter
GmbH. Two of her co-workers have also
been more than twenty years on the job.
„Actually, we only have long-term
employees,“ said Caroline Wolter about
her eight-person team. The business
graduate took the company over 15 years
ago after her father passed away and
knows what the company‘s most
important capital is: „I‘ve been lucky to
have good people who dedicate their
lifeblood to the firm.“
Caroline Wolter is particularly proud
about the 13 „landmarks“ that her staff
produced during the beBerlin Campaign
for the „ich bin ein berliner“ Initiative. At
the order of the Mediapool Agency, three
three-meter-tall weather-resistant displays
were created. Printed on both sides, the
display present renowned Berlin
enterprises that produce in the city,
including BMW, Bombardier and
Siemens. The displays are to be set up at
the start of 2011 in the city.
