Reflections from the President
Dear Friends of Mercy,
Thank you is a simple phrase, but I am offering it with great
sincerity. At the end of this school year there are many things I
give thanks for:
Our Students. They are truly the best. They have
applied themselves to their studies while being young women
of faith and service to others. They brighten my day and
others’ by a smile or a kind word.
Our Faculty and Staff. They give countless hours of
time and encouragement and go above and beyond to assist
our students. The faculty’s goal is that students will reach their
highest potential.
Our Alumnae. Our newest alums are the graduates of 2011. They were great leaders for
our school. They are off into new worlds that range from Fordham University in New York to
the University of Idaho and everywhere in between. I wish them many blessings on their future
journey. I am particularly proud of the fact that each graduate exceeded the number of required
service hours—what an example of “Women of Mercy!”
Our parents. Our students are fortunate to have parents who support their daughters on
their life journey with all the blessings and challenges.
Negotiated Tuition. This program is impacting, and has impacted, the lives of many
young women. These students would not have received a quality, Catholic education without
Negotiated Tuition.
The Mercy Community. Each of you have made and continue to make a difference
in the lives of each of us here at Mercy High School. Thank you for your generous support of
Mercy High School with prayers, encouraging words, and financial support which is essential to our
success.
God bless you,
Advancement Office Update
Dear Alumnae, Parents, and
Friends,
It’s summer! This is the time
for vacations, kicking back,
and enjoying seasonal activities
with family and friends. Many
folks are also thinking about
retirement and planning for
the future, to ensure that their
funds today are balanced to provide necessities and
more good times for many years to come -- and also
to support their favorite charitable organizations.
Last December, Congress passed a bill commonly
referred to as the “Tax Cut Extension Bill” which
the President signed into law. One provision of
this legislation extends the popular IRA Charitable
Rollover for all of 2011. Donors who have not
yet taken their mandatory distribution now have
until December 31, 2011 to make a tax-free, rollover
contribution to a qualified charity. The same
conditions apply as in years past:
•
•
•
The donor must be age 70 ½ or older;
The tax-free transfer limit is $100,000 per
individual; and
The distribution must be made directly from
an IRA or Roth IRA to a qualified charity like
Mercy High School.
While some donors will have already taken their
mandatory distributions, there are many who have
not. The direct transfers from an IRA to Mercy High
School will not increase your adjusted gross income
for 2011 federal income tax purposes, and they can be
counted toward your required minimum distribution
(RMD) if you meet the criteria above.
Please contact your IRA custodian or a qualified
financial advisor as soon as possible if you meet the
qualifications and would like to take advantage of the
tax benefits while supporting Mercy High School’s
annual fund, endowment, or Gratitude for God’s Mercy
capital campaign. You can make contributions right
way!
-3-
All of us at Mercy High School wish you and your
families a safe and wonderful summer as you prepare
to jump into a new season of activities and fun.
And speaking of fun…..come join us at our Driving
for Excellence Golf Fest, which will be held on July 25,
2011 at The Players Club at Deer Creek (see page 30
for additional information). It’s the 20 th anniversary
of this event and we would love to have you come
celebrate with us.
Thank you for making Mercy High School the great
school that it is!
With sincere gratitude,
Alumnae Celebrated at the All School Reunion
Our alumnae are a living testimonial to the value of a
Mercy education. Evidence of this truth is seen on pages
5-13 as alumnae from St. John to St. Mary and Mercy
share their personal stories of the impact of their Mercy
education (also included are class mottos and reunion
photos).
Over 280 alumnae from 1940 to 2006 celebrated their
reunions at Mercy’s All School Reunion in June. The Class
of 1961 was inducted into the Golden Guild Society. The
society, which recognizes alumnae of 50 years or more,
was instituted in 2005. Our alumnae are one of our most
influential and valuable assets.
Sunday, June 3
I really applaud Mercy High School and the negotiated
tuition program--the fact that any girl who desires to
receive a Catholic education enriched with faith principles
is given that opportunity. Negotiated tuition played a major
part in funding my education, for which I am extremely
grateful. Mercy High School makes sure each graduate has
all the knowledge they individually need to be a success in
the ‘real world.’
I received a good education at St. John which has been with me
from 1946 to today. Daily, my life has been influenced by the
wonderful education I received at St. John led by the Sisters of
Mercy. – Marguerite Lucia Crivera Smith, SJ ’46, Ft. Calhoun, Nebr.
The faith education I received at St. John has stayed with me
for 65 years. I continue to stay very involved giving back to
my church and community. Time flies when you are helping
others. – Mary Ann Herek Wortman, SJ ’46, Lakeland, Fla.
The St. John education continued my lifelong Catholic
education. I loved the Sisters of Mercy! – Patricia Fogarty
I still get together with my remaining high school friends. They were wonderful years in which the Sisters of Mercy
brought Christ’s love more alive to my life. They were an outstanding example for young women. – Patricia Clare Sullivan,
SM ’46, The Villages, Fla.
St. Mary instilled in me a firm, moral background with a solid foundation for higher education. I hold a bachelors and
masters degree in psychology. My marriage of 60 years is a strong Christian-Catholic marriage. – Therese Matras Peterson,
Class of St. Mary 1951 ~ 60 th Reunion
We were lucky that the foundress of the Sisters of Mercy, Catherine McAuley, imparted her values of caring for others
through the Sisters and through them to us as students. Sr. M. Brendan O’Malley, RSM impressed on us the values
of a Catholic education and appropriate behavior. How many times did I stand up on the bus and offer my seat to a
senior person? At Mercy, I also learned the importance of Catholic education and of speaking and writing effectively in
particular. I appreciate the formative guidance I received at Mercy High School. – Jean Frederick Dahlquist, SM ’51, Benson,
Ariz.
My introduction to the Sisters of Mercy and our class discussions regarding Catherine McAuley influenced my decision to
become a Sister of Mercy. The positive attitudes and ‘Mercy spirit’ I experienced with students and faculty were models
that I strived for in my own professional experiences. – Sr. Mary Lucina Kozeny, RSM, SM ’51, Omaha, Nebr.
Not only was every day interesting and fun, but the friendships made at St. Mary are still as treasured now as they were 60
years ago ~ priceless. – Lorraine O’Leary Pritchard, SM ’51, Omaha, Nebr.
Reunion committee members include Donna Bock Duke, Rose Mary Janczak Kohout, Virginia Kuzelka Budka, and Alice Olson Rischling.
I appreciated the self-discipline, sense of service to others, and encouragement to follow my dreams wherever they might
take me that I learned both at St. John and at Mercy. Mercy was my springboard into self-confidence which has led me to
be the inquisitive, more open-minded person I am today. Mercy prepared me to question everything and accept nothing
on faith (even faith itself) without careful examination of all possible sides. That prepared me for progressing successfully
through college, a masters degree and a doctorate at different institutions. – Dr. Barbara Hodik, Professor Emerita (Ret.), The
College of Imaging Arts and Sciences of the Rochester Institute of Technology in Rochester, NY.
My Mercy education provided me with a firm foundation for life. After 52 years of being a stay-at-home mom, I like to
think that my Mercy education enabled me to share with my family that the way a person lives their life is a showcase for
others. – Janice Seitz Bentle ’56, Elkhorn, Wisc.

hard. – Judge Mary Gleason Likes (Ret.) ’61, Omaha, Nebr.
Mercy High School instilled the spiritual, academic and social opportunities that were there for all of us. It was a fun four
During my first day in Sister Mary Patricia Ann’s typing class, I remember her saying, “Girls, if you can type, you will
develop a rewarding and profitable 45-year (and counting) administrative career. I am grateful for the knowledge I
acquired through Mercy’s business classes and have never forgotten the good old basics of proper spelling, punctuation,
composition and shorthand that the Sisters of Mercy strictly enforced. Mercy presented career opportunities for my sisters
When I originally applied for a teaching position with the Omaha Public Schools, the interviewer hired me on the spot.
Mercy gave me a good foundation that helped me through college and onto careers at IBM and AT&T. I also met many
Mercy High School has been an integral part of my family for over 100 years. My grandmother, mother, myself and
two daughters as well as my sisters and many nieces have graduated from Mercy. Mercy reinforced the faith we were
taught at home and church and helped make God the center of our lives. The all-girls experience built a feeling of selfconfidence
that has enabled us to succeed in all areas of life. I can’t imagine a world without Mercy High School. – Kathy
When I consider Mercy’s mission of leading girls to contribute to a more just, loving and hopeful world, it’s easy to see
that my Mercy education greatly influenced my career path. As family teachers at Boystown for the last ten years, my
Class Motto: Without the way, there is no going. Without the truth, there is no knowing.
Without love, there is no life.
I had many unique experiences and opportunities at
Mercy that I would not have been able to experience
at other schools. Even though I graduated 15 years
ago, I still feel like a member of the Mercy family. I
am fortunate to have the opportunity to work with other
Mercy alumnae daily at the University of Nebraska
Medical Center (UNMC), including one of my “little
sisters.” – Heather Sorensen Carson ’96, specialty care nurse
UNMC-Urologic Surgery Dept, Omaha, Nebr.
Attending Mercy helped me to become a caring, compassionate
and responsible person. Jobs may come and
go, but those values will always stay with me. I am proud
to tell people I’m a Mercy girl! – Cyndi Thompson Hevi ’96,
Omaha, Nebr.
The time I spent at Mercy provided me a rich faith base
that has helped me every day in my interactions with my
family, my coworkers, and my friends. I am very thankful
for the opportunities I had during my time at Mercy, and
proud to be a part of the strong successful Mercy family.
Stacia Slezak Luther, with daughter, Jayci, future Mercy
girl.
Mercy education offers more than just the content inside books. You learn
the principles necessary to succeed in both your professional and personal
life. My instructors at Mercy led by example. They showed me how to be
responsible while demonstrating a responsibility to me, to my education. They
taught me the importance of timeliness, organization, and accountability of
my actions. There is no doubt in my mind that I would not have as strong of
a foundation on which to build my life without the influence of my teachers,
classmates, and the entire Mercy community. – Stacia Slezak Luther ’01,
administrative associate, University of Nebraska Medical Center, Omaha, Nebr.
-12-
Mercy allowed me to really get to know myself and become an independent, free-thinking person. This has served me
well throughout so many aspects of my adult life and impacted so many of the decisions I continue to make today. I
formed some of the most meaningful and lasting friendships of my life during my time at Mercy. Although many of my
closest friends are now scattered throughout the US, we still make time to see and support each other whenever we can. I
graduated in 2005 from Northwest Missouri State with a bachelor of arts degree in public relations and Spanish minor. –
Katie Hansen ’01, senior campus recruiter, at Cerner Corporation; Kansas City, Mo.
A Mercy High School education has provided me with the tools to work hard, endure and succeed. I’m grateful for my
family, the lifelong friends I made and the teachers who helped me develop into a strong woman of Mercy. – Kimberly
Bryant Vavra ‘01, marketing communications specialist, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Nebraska, Omaha, Nebr.
So much of ME truly began at Mercy --my love of science, my appreciation of the arts, my enjoyment of education, my
understanding of the importance of service and most importantly, my faith. Anesthesia is an art and a science. It has
required more of me than anything in my life has before, but caring for others in such a vulnerable time is amazingly
fulfilling, and I know I have found my life’s passion. I know that God has a plan for me, and I am so glad that it included
my education and self-discovery at Mercy. – Ann Veys Coco ’01, registered nurse, Omaha, Nebr. pursing a graduate degree as a nurse
I am very proud to a woman of Mercy. When I attended Dominican University in River Front, Ill., I realized that there
were other “women of Mercy” at the school from all across the country (Mother McAuley: Chicago, and Mercy High
School: Connecticut.). They, too, were equally as proud of their alma mater as I. Some of my best friends and former
college roommates are fellow Mercy girls. It was a bonding factor that brought us all closer together. Needless to say we
celebrated Mercy Day every year. I graduated in 2011 from Dominican University with a bachelor of arts degree in psychology.
Dear God, as we look back through the years
we’ve stood together through smiles and tears.
A new place, an unfamiliar face,
new challenges, and dreams to chase.
we entered Mercy with a bond unknown;
our sisterhood would soon be shown.
We were welcomed in
unaware of the story that would begin.
It’s fun to see how quickly we grew,
we were all freshmen so young and newtaking
life one step at a timeknowing
our sisters were by our side.
Memories come with every year,
with every laugh, with every cheer.
Now here we are almost Women of Mercy,
swiftly becoming who we should be.
To each other we’ve been a gift from heaven.
Thank God for the class of 2011!
Service Earns Sophomore the
Franco Scholarship
In 2001, Louise Battaglia Franco, SM ’50, and her family
established the Phillip S. Franco Scholarship in honor
of her late husband, to assist a sophomore student with
tuition based on service hours. Five sophomores with the
most service hours are asked to submit essays addressing
(1) what Mercy education means to them; (2) service
performed and what that
has meant for them; and
(3) their need for the
scholarship. The family
selects the winner based
on these essays, without
knowing the identity
of the student until the
winner is announced at the
annual Honors Assembly.
This year’s Phillip S.
Franco Scholarship winner
is sophomore Samantha
White. She will receive a
grant toward 2011-2012
tuition.
A.L.U.M. Scholarship Awarded
to Freshmen
Freshmen Madeline Lenz and Elizabeth Nussrallah were
awarded they A.L.U.M. scholarship for the 2011-2012
academic year. The A.L.U.M. scholarship was initiated
by Mrs. Ann Louise Urzendowski Micek, SM ’49, who is
a strong advocate for the education of women. Micek
received an inspiration from the Holy Spirit that she
should set up a permanent scholarship at each of the three
girls schools in Omaha. The scholarship honors young
women who exemplify the best attributes of each of the
schools and are dedicated to service in their parishes,
their schools, and the civic community. Part of Micek’s
motivation was to have women helping women and to
deepen the spirit of cooperation among the girls schools.
As a result, first year students were invited to write an
essay and complete an application form. Each school
was permitted to advance four or five essays for the final
selection. Mrs. Micek, her daughter, Dr. Laura Micek, and
a committee of administrators reviewed the applications
and made the final selections.
Students Serve Others Over Spring Break
Twelve Mercy students and four chaperones spent their spring break on a
service trip to Belize. Throughout the week, updates were posted on Mercy’s
Facebook Fan Page. Posted on their first day: “Today we found ourselves in
solidarity with many Belizean people, as we were able to experience some of
their poverty firsthand. After meeting some St. Catherine’s girls the day began
with a tour of the Mercy Spirituality Center and the Mercy Care Center, a
hospital and food kitchen sponsored by the Sisters of Mercy. We got to meet
the doctor at the clinic who was actually a University of Nebraska Medical
Center graduate!”
while undergoing cancer treatment.
Cooney entered the Sisters
of Mercy in 1957 upon
graduation of Mercy High
School in Omaha, Nebr.
She began her ministry
in 1962 as a high school
teacher in Mount St. Mary
Academy in Grass Valley,
Calif. with a bachelor of
Cooney headed the Omaha Province of the Sisters of Mercy
from 1979 to 1986, a time when religious orders were undergoing
changes in ministry priorities. “Sister Norita built consensus
among members of the order in the more than two dozen states
that were part of the province,” Sister Rita Parks said. “She could
bridge perspectives.”
In 1986, she assumed the position of president/CEO for Bergan
Mercy Health System, Omaha, Nebr. serving in that role until
Alegent Health was formed in 1995. At that time, she was named
chair of the board of Alegent Healthcares Systems of Omaha.
