Scope CEN/TC 287
• Standardization in the field of digital geographic
information for Europe:
A structured framework of standards and guidelines,
which specify a methodology to define, describe and
transfer geographic data and services.
• This work will be carried out in close co-operation
with ISO/TC 211 in order to avoid duplication of work.
• The standards will support the consistent use of
geographic information throughout Europe in a
manner which is compatible with international usage.
They will support a spatial data infrastructure at all
levels in Europe.

Objectives of CEN/TC 287
Building the infrastructure for spatial
information in Europe by:
1. adopting where appropriate the ISO 19100 series as European
standards:
– Already a big number of published standards
– Parallel work items
2. developing new standards, specifications and profiles of
standards including adopting INSPIRE implementing rules as
European standards as they become available;
3. ensuring interoperability by co-operation in particular with
ISO/TC 211, the technical co-ordinator of INSPIRE, and OGC

4. ensuring quality of the standards by establishing a group for

5. promoting the use of and education on standards for
geographic information – the main task of the AG Outreach
