Scope <strong>CEN</strong>/<strong>TC</strong> <strong>287</strong><br />

• St<strong>and</strong>ardization in the field of digital geographic<br />

in<strong>for</strong>mation <strong>for</strong> Europe:<br />

A structured framework of st<strong>and</strong>ards <strong>and</strong> guidelines,<br />

which specify a methodology to define, describe <strong>and</strong><br />

transfer geographic data <strong>and</strong> services.<br />

• This work will be carried out in close co-operation<br />

with <strong>ISO</strong>/<strong>TC</strong> <strong>211</strong> in order to avoid duplication of work.<br />

• The st<strong>and</strong>ards will support the consistent use of<br />

geographic in<strong>for</strong>mation throughout Europe in a<br />

manner which is compatible with international usage.<br />

They will support a spatial data infrastructure at all<br />

levels in Europe.<br />

Hans Knoop <strong>CEN</strong>/<strong>TC</strong> <strong>287</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>ISO</strong>/<strong>TC</strong> <strong>211</strong> <strong>Outreach</strong> <strong>Activities</strong> <strong>for</strong> <strong>SDIs</strong> Rotterdam, 15-19 June 2009<br />

.

Objectives of <strong>CEN</strong>/<strong>TC</strong> <strong>287</strong><br />

Building the infrastructure <strong>for</strong> spatial<br />

in<strong>for</strong>mation in Europe by:<br />

1. adopting where appropriate the <strong>ISO</strong> 19100 series as European<br />

st<strong>and</strong>ards:<br />

– Already a big number of published st<strong>and</strong>ards<br />

– Parallel work items<br />

2. developing new st<strong>and</strong>ards, specifications <strong>and</strong> profiles of<br />

st<strong>and</strong>ards including adopting INSPIRE implementing rules as<br />

European st<strong>and</strong>ards as they become available;<br />

3. ensuring interoperability by co-operation in particular with<br />

<strong>ISO</strong>/<strong>TC</strong> <strong>211</strong>, the technical co-ordinator of INSPIRE, <strong>and</strong> OGC<br />

Hans Knoop <strong>CEN</strong>/<strong>TC</strong> <strong>287</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>ISO</strong>/<strong>TC</strong> <strong>211</strong> <strong>Outreach</strong> <strong>Activities</strong> <strong>for</strong> <strong>SDIs</strong> Rotterdam, 15-19 June 2009

Objectives of <strong>CEN</strong>/<strong>TC</strong> <strong>287</strong> (cntd.)<br />

4. ensuring quality of the st<strong>and</strong>ards by establishing a group <strong>for</strong><br />

cultural <strong>and</strong> linguistic adaptability issues <strong>and</strong> translation of<br />

important <strong>CEN</strong>/<strong>TC</strong> <strong>287</strong> deliverables into other languages of<br />

<strong>CEN</strong> member countries; <strong>and</strong> by researching the possibility of<br />

funding with the EU 7th Framework programme <strong>for</strong> project work<br />

that is essential to Europe;<br />

5. promoting the use of <strong>and</strong> education on st<strong>and</strong>ards <strong>for</strong><br />

geographic in<strong>for</strong>mation – the main task of the AG <strong>Outreach</strong><br />
