Fountainhead of Learning
The only church-related school in the new Western Athletic Conference, Brigham Young University has several
distinctive features which complement its academic standing. Besides being the fountainhead of learning for The
Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, it is one of the largest church-related universities in the nation.
BYU is known for its well-trained, dedicated faculty of over seven hundred. Faculty members have obtained
degrees from universities in most of the states of the union and in a number of foreign countries. More than fifty
per cent have doctoral degrees, considerably above the average for the nation's universities.
The University, which is on the approved list of the major recognized accrediting organizations, is organized
into eleven colleges, a graduate school, a research division and a division of adult education and extension services.
BYU offers excellent preprofessional training in law, medicine, dentistry, veterinary medicine, forestry, optometry,
and pharmacy. Students in the premedical and predental programs, for example, have been accepted at
professional schools throughout the nation at a much higher rate than the national average of about 50%. In a
recent academic year 97% of predental students and 70% of premedical students from BYU gained acceptance at
medical and dental schools.
The Provo campus covers over 614 acres. Included are 42 academic buildings, 25 administrative and auxiliary
buildings, 62 residence halls and 150 temporary family apartment units. In addition there are the Alpine Campus in
Provo Canyon, a dairy farm, a poultry farm, and a 610-acre agricultural farm.
When the school was first organized as an academy in 1875, Brigham Young told Karl G. Maeser, its principal,
"I want you to remember that you ought not to teach even the alphabet or the multiplication tables without the
spirit of God." This all-embracing charge that couples spiritual and secular learning is still part of the philosophy
at BYU. The school's adopted motto is "The glory of God is intelligence."
