William Penn Foundation awards PAFA $500,000 grant for exhibitions PAFA has been awarded a grant of $500,000 to support two upcoming major exhibitions – The Linda Lee Alter Collection of Art by Women (november 17, 2012 – April 14, 2013), and a major retrospective of art by David Lynch taking place in 2014. “We are deeply grateful to the William Penn Foundation for this monumental grant for PAFA’s exhibition program— our largest program grant ever—for the inaugural exhibition of the Linda Lee Alter Collection of Art by Women and a retrospective exhibition for artist and filmmaker David lynch,” said David R. Brigham, PhD, PAFA’s President and CEO. “The William Penn Foundation is extraordinary in its willingness to provide strong leadership support, which then inspires others to contribute.” As announced in December 2011, Philadelphia artist and art collector linda lee Alter donated to PAFA her collection of approximately 400 works of art by women, spanning the 1920s to the present, in all media and by a wide range of artists from the well-known to the underappreciated. In placing her collection with PAFA, lee’s stated intent was to “help art by women become more visible and better appreciated,” and to bring forth art by women to be seen by all. The collection reflects both a diversity of style and medium, and includes a strong representation of art by women of color (Americans of Asian, African, Hispanic, and American Indian ethnicity). Summer Academy for High School Students July 9 – August 3 The definitive program for talented and motivated young people intent on a fine arts education: college-level courses in drawing, painting, sculpture and printmaking, PAFA.ORG Ms. Alter’s gift to PAFA, negotiated over several years by Dr. Brigham and PAFA’s Senior Curator and Curator of Modern Art, Robert Cozzolino, addressees two key objectives in PAFA’s strategic plan: “Enhance the art collection through purchases, gifts,…” and “…reflect the needs of diverse audiences in our programs and collections.” PAFA’s exhibition The Linda Lee Alter Collection of Art by Women will run for seven months – the longest-running exhibition in recent PAFA memory – on both floors of PAFA’s Samuel M.V. Hamilton Building (the Fisher Brooks and Annenberg galleries). As many as 175 works from the collection will be shown in the exhibition and arranged thematically (self-portraiture, spiritual reactions to nature, politics, sexuality, family, and a wide range of landscapes). David lynch will be the focus of a major exhibition in 2014. lynch’s art is well-known in Europe, but in the u.S., he is better known to baby-boom generation museum-goers acquainted with his works on film (such as Eraserhead, The Elephant Man, Dune, Blue Velvet, Twin Peaks, Lost Highway, Mulholland Drive) . In the late 1960s, David lynch was a student at PAFA’s School of Fine Arts where he made paintings that gradually encompassed the moving image – in fact he made his first film short while a student at PAFA. Since his time at PAFA, lynch has become known to the general public more for his provocatively creative, psychologically Continuing Education Programs SuMMER 2012 AT PAFA // MAy 21 – AuguST 19 Continuing Education (CE) at PAFA offers art classes and workshops for adults and high school students at all levels of ability. The summer semester is the largest and most extensive in the CE program, featuring one, six, and twelve-week courses, weekend workshops and special programs scheduled throughout the summer. Members at the “Friends” level and above receive a 10% tuition discount on regular courses and workshops! Learning to See: An American View // July 17 – August 2 Presented by the Violette de Mazia Foundation, this course will introduce students to an objective method for appreciating art using the educational methods developed by John Dewey, Dr. Albert C. Barnes and Violette de Mazia. Through a variety of media, PAFA’s David Lynch: A Retrospective exhibition will introduce audiences to the psychologically-rooted imagery in lynch’s artwork and reveal how it parallels and interlocks with the below-thesurface complexity of his film and video work. Additional exhibition-related activities are being planned, including a David lynch film festival, a scholarly symposium, and lectures including PAFA’s Art-at-lunch. This exhibition, lynch’s first retrospective in the u.S., will include approximately 10 large-scale and 15 small-scale paintings, 50 works on paper, 25 lithographs, 50 photographic prints, a large body of small sketch works from lynch’s notebooks, and a group of approximately 15 sculptures.
