Cool Comes to PAFA
Barkley L. Hendricks:
Birth of the Cool
October 17, 2009 – January 3, 2010
Fisher Brooks Gallery
PAFA is proud to present the first
career painting retrospective of
renowned American artist, and PAFA
alumnus, Barkley L. Hendricks. Hendricks
is a seminal figure, whose work
is uniquely situated at the crossing of
American realism and post-modernism.
Walking a path between figurative artists such
as Chuck Close and Alex Katz, and the conceptualism
of artists like David Hammons and Adrian Piper,
Hendricks’ pioneering approach results in a hybrid
style of portraiture that encompasses an interest in
Renaissance art, pop culture, fashion, and music,
and whose influence can be observed in generations
of younger artists such as Kehinde Wiley, Rasheed
Johnson, and Mickalene Thomas, among others.
Hendricks is best known for his stunning life-size
portraits of people of color from the urban northeast,
and it is through these cool, empowering, and sometimes
confrontational images that he explores the
complexity of contemporary “black” identity. Variously
he works from real-life sitters and photographs—he refers
to his camera as his “mechanical sketchbook”—in
a format that is reminiscent of images from fashion magazines
and movie posters.
Hendricks notes that “How people dress is how they
want to be seen in the world,” and in his paintings the
look and feel of popular culture and fashion becomes
a study in social and personal identity that is focused
in a style completely his own. These images of friends,
strangers, and the artist himself, reveal not only a sense of
humor and a sense of racial pride, but also witness Hendricks’
desire to redirect the genre of Western portraiture.
Making African American fashion, style, and social identity
his subject matter, he refashions historic portraiture as an
act of self-definition in the post civil rights era. In these
commanding full-length portraits of African American
women and men, silhouetted against crisp monochromatic
backgrounds, Hendricks transforms his sitters from
ordinary people into larger than life celebrities and in this
way his portraits privilege an American subject who has
often been overlooked by mainstream society. With little
concern for what is popular or accepted, Hendricks has
followed his own path. His body of work stands out as
unique among his contemporaries, has had a profound impact on
a younger generation of artists, and is as vital and vibrant today as
ever.
Barkley L. Hendricks: Birth of the Cool is the first major survey
of Hendricks’ paintings and consists of 57 works made from 1964
to the present that will be augmented by a number of important
paintings held in private Philadelphia collections. Alongside his
iconic portraits, the exhibition will feature many of Hendricks’ lesser
known, earlier works and his more recent portal-like paintings of
landscapes in Jamaica, where he returns annually to paint en plein
air. The special section of these landscapes is dedicated to the
memory of the late Louis B. Sloan.
Born in 1945 in Philadelphia, Hendricks attended PAFA from
1963 to 1967 and studied under the tutelage of the late Louis
B. Sloan. The first African American student to be awarded two
consecutive travel scholarships, he traveled to Europe in 1966
and then North Africa in 1968. Abroad he encountered works by
the old masters of European painting—such as Rembrandt, van
Dyck, Caravaggio and van Eyck—which informed the process of
his painting. He graduated with bachelor’s and master’s degrees in
fine arts from Yale University in 1972 and since then he has
PAFA Launches
Host/Mentor
Program
Three years ago, PAFA trustee Debbie Zug visited the
country of Bhutan with her husband and several friends.
Their guide’s daughter had recently graduated from high
school and endeared herself to the travelers, who asked
about her plans for the future. Because the Prince of
Bhutan had attended Wheaton College in Massachusetts,
she desperately wanted to go there. Two of Zug’s companions
had gone to Wheaton and worked to help get
the college to accept her. When this did not occur, the
girl was crushed and the women became determined to
help her go to school in the United States. Zug met with
a friend who had been an admissions counselor who suggested
Eastern University here in Pennsylvania. The girl
was accepted and received a grant to come to America
and all thirteen of the fellow travelers pitched in to cover
the rest of her tuition.
When Zug, who has also had experience as a mentor
for an inner-city girl in Baltimore, heard that PAFA’s next
incoming class includes four international students, she
was inspired to establish a student host/mentor program
here at the Academy. She immediately sent a notice to
PAFA’s Board of Trustees to encourage others to join
her in hosting an international student. Several trustees,
including Sally Bellet, Chair of the School Committee, will
join Zug in her new endeavor.
The PAFA Student Host/Mentor Program will match incoming
international students with members of the PAFA
community based on expressed interests of the host and
student. Hosts will help provide logistical and emotional
support to students from around the world who may be
overwhelmed with their new environments.
States Zug, “We will be starting small with foreign
students and then may go on to have the program include
other students who need help in getting acquainted with
Philadelphia. We’re very open to what we might do.”
For now, the mentorship may entail anything from taking
a student out to lunch or helping them shop to writing
emails and connecting over the phone. At this time,
there are no housing or financial commitments and Zug
acknowledges that the program will take a different shape
for each host and student. Regardless of the results, Zug
believes the program is important for PAFA in order for
foreign students to “make a smooth cultural transition and
adjust to city and American life.”
Zug herself is part of an international family. Of her
seven grandchildren, three have been adopted from Russia,
India, and Kazakhstan.
“It is so rewarding to see a foreign student come to
America and grow and develop,” Zug remarks. “The girl
from Bhutan has changed so much and it has been gratifying
to watch it occur.”
Perspective: A Partnership
The numbers speak for themselves.
Seventy-eight percent of School
District of Philadelphia children live
in poverty, and 50 percent of these
young people don’t graduate from
high school. Given these numbers, it
is no surprise that only 20 percent of
Philadelphians have college or university
degrees— a percentage that
places this city 92nd out of the 100
largest cities in this country.
It is almost glib to say that something is very wrong. But
that is why we wanted to meet with Dr. Arlene Ackerman,
the new superintendent of the School District, when she first
came to Philadelphia. As one of the leading art institutions in
the region, we wanted to talk about how we might help make
Philadelphia schools a better place for this city’s children.
Out of that meeting and the several that followed, the
Academy and the District crafted a collaborative agreement
in what we came to call the Family Arts Academy at PAFA.
Guided by one of the principal elements of the District’s
new strategic plan, the Family Arts Academy is built around
the importance of familial involvement in a child’s education.
of the Cool, this program will be offered free of charge on
weekends to adults with children. In its fullness, it will offer
multi-week courses in the visual arts, workshops, exhibitions,
and career mentoring. Although the program will be
open to all families with children, we’ll make a special effort
to reach families whose children attend low performing and
under-funded schools. The District and PAFA are now jointly
seeking funding for the program’s full implementation by next
January.
This program isn’t founded on some mawkish nostrum.
We know that family involvement makes a decided difference.
We know that young people in a visual arts program
are twice as likely to excel in academic performance and
far more likely to continue their education after high school.
So we think the District and PAFA are on to something
important. And we’re proud to be the District’s partner in an
educational initiative that just might make a difference.
PAFA Receives Major Grant from William Penn Foundation
The William Penn Foundation has awarded PAFA a grant in the amount of $440,000. The grant will fund a three-year contemporary
art program that will support the production of new art, encourage the broadest understanding of contemporary
art practice, and expand audiences for both contemporary and historical art at PAFA.
“This grant is a major step forward in making contemporary art more accessible to the public and to advancing Philadelphia’s
identity nationally as a center for contemporary art,” comments Edna S. Tuttleman Museum Director David Brigham.
PAFA’s multi-year contract with the William Penn Foundation will be used in support of the following forthcoming exhibitions:
Philagrafika 2010: The Graphic Unconscious (January – April, 2010) is the inaugural presentation of a multi-sited international
festival of contemporary art that will occur in Philadelphia every four years. Philagrafika 2010 will focus on artistic
practices that engage the visual, intellectual, and creative frontiers in printmaking and how these approaches relate to social
and political issues.
Further developing the Morris Gallery’s role and reputation as an important venue for supporting emerging art, PAFA will
stage a series of five solo exhibitions (May, 2010 – December, 2011). The five artists will be drawn from across the country
and the Philadelphia region and their work will be in a diverse range of mediums. In a number of cases this will be an artist’s
first solo museum exhibition. This series will also provide for the commissioning of new works.
We’re All Still Here (October, 2011 – January, 2012) will bring together six curators from other regions, commissioned
to collaborate with PAFA’s Curator of Contemporary Art to create an exhibition that surveys artists who live outside the main
market centers and who make the hot issues of contemporary art their own. Conceived to take account of an artist’s “sense
of place,” this exhibition will provide a platform to support and promote the work of Philadelphia and regional artists demonstrating
the vitality of art being made in different parts of the country.
Julien Robson, PAFA’s Curator of Contemporary Art states, “This is a great vote of confidence in our programming plans
and allows PAFA to move into a new and dynamic phase of contemporary exhibitions that will promote regional artists in a
national and international context while expanding audiences within the city and the region.”
Pop Culture Icon Malcolm McLaren’s
Shallow 1-21 on View in Morris Gallery
Shallow 1-21, 2008
Video on DVD, 86 min., Lent by Brook and Pam Smith
October 25, 2009 - January 3, 2010
Morris Gallery, Historic Landmark Building
A pop cultural icon for over thirty
years, Malcolm McLaren is a visionary
artist. Always at the forefront of culture
and pushing boundaries, he is probably
best recognized for his work in melding
fashion with music.
Shallow 1-21, an 86-minute video,
consists of 21 “musical paintings.” Using
both musical cut-ups and short clips
appropriated from old sex films that have
been spliced, repeated, and slowed
down, the result is hypnotic, layered, and
provocative. PAFA is proud to exhibit
Shallow 1-21 in its entirety for the first
time in North America.
“I considered making portraits of people
about to have sex,” explains McLaren.
“This as it turned out, involved trawling
through and selecting scenes from hundreds
of old and often obscure amateur
sex movies: 8-mm films of ordinary folk
who played a part in sex films before sex
cinema turned into the industry as we
know it today. I slowed down most of
the images until sometimes they almost
stood still, revealing through their age, a
certain painterly quality.”
McLaren continues, “I made 21
musical works from a grab bag of pop
culture’s debris of the past 50 years. In
linking these musical cut-ups to the face
of those sexual encounters, I can’t say
what happens is what happened. The
alchemy made possible another meaning
far deeper than what existed before.
I began to call these works the musical
end of painting because they are not
films or videos but another form entirely;
a map of feelings that navigates the look
of music and the sound of fashion.”
Born in London in 1946, McLaren
was educated at art schools in England.
In 1971, with his then partner, Vivienne
Westwood, McLaren opened the legendary
Let It Rock shop in London, creating
fashion that would dress the punk
generation and inspire legions of fashion
designers. In the mid-1970s, McLaren
founded, managed, and art directed the
iconic punk band, the Sex Pistols. He
then went on to work with such artists as
Boy George, Adam Ant, and Bow Wow
Wow, before becoming a recording artist
in his own right. In the 1980s and 90s,
McLaren’s solo albums, Duck Rock,
Fans, Waltz Darling, and Paris were ma-
Since we updated you a year ago, PAFA’s
outstanding collection of American art has
grown by more than 450 artworks, through
gift and purchase. These include three
important collections: 174 etching plates
by Philadelphia landscape artist Herbert
Pullinger, donated by Ann C. and Martin Avery Snyder;
100 Polaroids and 51 black-and-white photographs by
Pop artist Andy Warhol, given by The Andy Warhol Foundation
for the Visual Arts; and 50 works of contemporary
art donated by Herbert and Dorothy Vogel.
The Vogels have confounded the notion that art collecting
is an expensive undertaking accessible only to people
with great wealth. On the salary of Herbert’s work as a
United States Postal worker and Dorothy’s as a librarian in
Brooklyn, they amassed more than 3,600 works primarily
by abstract, minimalist, and conceptual artists. Approximately
1,100 of these have been given to the National
Gallery of Art. Inspired by the example of Samuel H.
Kress, who made a large gift to the National Gallery and
then made smaller gifts to museums across the country,
the Vogels decided to give 50 works to a museum in every
one of the United States. PAFA is pleased that the Vogels
chose to make their gift in this state to the Academy.
Among the artists in their donation include Will Barnet,
Lynda Benglis, Nam June Paik, and Richard Tuttle.
Important purchases include paintings by Louis Lozowick
and Dox Thrash. PAFA added to its growing strength
in American modernism by purchasing Lozowick’s painting,
Pittsburgh (1922), a Futurist interpretation of the
industrial landscape. Best known as a printmaker, Dox
Thrash’s oil painting joins a distinguished group of artists’
self-portraits at PAFA, including works by Charles Willson
Peale, Benjamin West, John Sloan, and Margaret Foster
Richardson.
We are thrilled to host Barkley L. Hendricks: Birth of the
Cool this fall. This important exhibition fits into a long tradition
at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts of educating,
collecting, exhibiting, and honoring Africa American artists and
their artwork.
That history begins in 1879 when Henry O. Tanner enrolled
as PAFA’s first African American student. He went on to a
career of international acclaim, including having his paintings
collected by the French government, exhibiting at the prestigious
Paris Salon for 20 consecutive years, and earning the
patronage of American museums and collectors. Indeed, PAFA
purchased Tanner’s Nicodemus in 1900, the year it was exhibited
in our annual exhibition.
Over the next 130 years, PAFA has educated approximately
200 African American artists. They include Laura Wheeler
Waring, an early twentieth-century art educator for whom a
Philadelphia public elementary school is named; the renowned
sculptor Meta Warrick Fuller; Louis B. Sloan, who became
PAFA’s first African American faculty member; Sloan’s classmate
Raymond Saunders; and later Moe Brooker, James
Brantley, Richard Watson, and Barkley Hendricks.
From 1941 to the late 1950s, PAFA supported the art activities
of the Pyramid Club, a black social and cultural organization
at 1517 Girard Avenue. PAFA students, alumni, and faculty
actively participated in the Pyramid Club’s annuals. PAFA, in
turn, exhibited works by Pyramid Club members, both in annual
exhibitions and occasionally in solo exhibitions. And PAFA purchased
works by Humbert Howard, Paul Keene, Dox Thrash,
Edward Loper, and others who were leaders at the Pyramid
Club.
PAFA has built a significant collection of African American
art, including works by Horace Pippin and Jacob Lawrence.
In 2004, this aspect of the collection was greatly enhanced
by the gift of Harold A. and Ann Sorgenti of their outstanding
collection of contemporary African American art. That important
collection goes on national tour, starting this summer at the Taft
Museum in Cincinnati, followed next year by the Columbia Museum
of Art in South Carolina; and in 2011 the Hudson River
Museum in New York.
Barkley Hendricks was recognized during his student days
at PAFA with the prestigious William Emlen Cresson and J.
Henry Schiedt Travel Scholarships. The year after Hendricks
graduated from PAFA, Mr. and Mrs. Richard Dilworth donated
his painting J.S.B. III, a portrait of his fellow alumnus James
Brantley. Hendricks’ paintings were exhibited in Philadelphia
galleries and collected locally, and several of those works will
be exhibited only at PAFA. Earlier this year, PAFA honored
Hendricks with the Distinguished Alumni Award, and now by
presenting an augmented version of the retrospective exhibition
of his paintings that is touring the nation to great acclaim.
We trust that Barkley’s link to PAFA and this beautiful exhibition
will be memorable chapters within the history of American
art and culture.
Like most kids, Certificate/BFA painting teacher Michael Gallagher
made his first contact with visual art through children’s books and
comics. And, like many children, he copied the images obsessively, but
by adolescence had abandoned the pastime.
Years later, while attending La Salle University on an athletic scholarship,
Gallagher took a painting course in his final semester, “merely to
fill out my course load,” says Gallagher. “Little did I know how important
that single experience would be. I was hooked and returned home
to Pasadena and took a year to prepare a portfolio in order to apply for
formal study.”
As athletics gave way to art, Gallagher came across a PAFA catalog
in 1979 and immediately knew that the Academy was the type of
school he wanted to attend. The catalog included examples of faculty
and student work and Gallagher found the range and quality of the
work impressive, sensing “a respect for tradition and craft that other
schools did not seem to offer.” Gallagher believes that same dynamic
is what continues to draw students to PAFA today.
As an Academy student, Gallagher moved back and forth between
representation and abstraction, the boundaries between the two languages
seeming very fluid to the burgeoning artist who felt that PAFA
offered a sympathetic and encouraging environment for individual
artistic growth. By attending the Academy, he felt that “the sense that
one could seriously pursue a life in the arts seemed to be a given.”
After graduating from the Certificate program in 1987, Gallagher
began working for the museum in the preparators department and
later as an assistant for the painting department. He began exhibiting
in 1988, and in 2002, he finished his Masters degree. He has been on
PAFA’s faculty ever since.
In 2007, Gallagher received PAFA’s “Outstanding Teacher of the
Year” Award and of his teaching style and philosophy, says, “I think it
is very important to respond to each student individually. It is a useless
endeavor to compare one student to another, to attempt to direct a
student to your way of thinking or what you think they should be doing.
You have to respect their interests and give them space to grow.
“I truly enjoy the teaching experience here at the Academy because
our students are excellent. They really are top notch. I can’t say enough
about the caliber of student the Academy attracts, they are a joy to
work with.”
Photography by Bresner
BFA has finished its first year of operation, and already, over 80
students have enrolled in this new program.
With the BFA, we are rapidly growing the Academy’s first
ever program of liberal arts studies. The latest professor to join
the liberal arts faculty is historian Dr. Ali Chambers, who will
be teaching a two-semester sequence of World Civilization. A
revamped drawing curriculum, with a number of new and improved
courses, includes a class taught by the two-time winner
of the Caldecott Medal, author/ illustrator David Weisner. New
faculty member Shelley Spector, who promises to bring innovative
techniques for artists to survive and thrive in this digital
age, is offering a fresh version of the Business of Art class.
Finally, the celebrated young artists and alums Steven and Billy
Blaise Dufala will be teaching a new sculpture class jointly with
PAFA’s John Grieg that will inspire our students to make art by
incorporating found objects and materials.
The wonderful exhibitions of Elizabeth Osborne and Sidney
Goodman will run through September, along with Legacies:
Works by Twelve Former Students of Elizabeth Osborne and
Sidney Goodman. These shows exemplify PAFA’s programs
and artists, as will the upcoming retrospective of Academy
alum Barkley L. Hendricks. Not to be missed are master
classes by Bo Bartlett, Stuart Shils, and Odd Nerdrum. The
School will be hosting talks by these artists during the periods
of their workshops.
From the Desk
of the Dean:
A Community of Artists
By Jeffrey Carr, Senior Vice President of Academic Affairs,
Dean of the School of Fine Arts
There’s a persistent image of the artist as a lone genius,
holed up in a garret somewhere, making sublime works
that nobody understands. Nobody who is a practicing
professional artist believes that. Artists love to hang out
with other artists. Who else knows better the trials and
tribulations of making art than other artists? There are
triumphs and failures, worldly success and the occasional
standout success in the studio. And all artists know that
these two forms of success don’t necessarily coincide.
In the end, your best audience is your audience of fellow
artists.
This was demonstrated by opening of the current alumni
show Legacies: Works by Twelve Former Students
of Elizabeth Osborne and Sidney Goodman. Over 700
alums and artists came to enjoy the work, the fellowship
and above all, the shared inspiration they had received
from the art and the teaching of Sidney Goodman and Liz
Osborne. There was a palpable sense of continuity that
night between the lives and careers of Sidney and Liz,
and the new generations of artists working, exhibiting, and
participating in the living traditions of the Academy.
Artists create their work and careers within complicated
communities of fellow artists, galleries, reviewers, patrons,
friends, collectors, and curators. No one can do it alone,
and why should one want to? Art is about sharing images,
ideas, inspirations, passions, and prejudges. The vibe in
the PAFA community was intense that opening night. The
talk, the remembrances, the art gossip, and the presence
of the art itself was a vivid reminder of what it means to be
part of a community of artists. I remember wonderful conversations
with Edgar Jerins about his portraits of hunters
and Kate Kaman about her new sculpture commission
with Temple University. I introduced artist Elena Peteva
to PAFA alum and New York Academy faculty member
Wade Schuman, and saw Vincent Desiderio hugging
his beloved mentor Sidney Goodman. Liz Osborne was
besieged with fans who wanted her to autograph her new
book. Many former and current students hung out, caught
up, and celebrated the life we have chosen.
In The Philadelphia Inquirer, Edith Newhall wrote,
“There’s no telling who studied with whom in the Pennsylvania
Academy of the Fine Arts’ [‘Legacies’]- and
apparently no point in guessing, either.” She’s right. It’s
not about who studied with whom, but the fact that we all
learn from one another. As the School’s Mission Statement
has it, we are “a community of working artists dedicated
to maintaining an inspired environment that fosters
a commitment to engaging art and the creative act as a
lifelong pursuit of the highest order.” I think that sums it
up: we inspire ourselves by inspiring each other.
This fall, the sculpture department’s enrollment
is at an all-time high of 35 majors partaking
well as new classes. John Grieg, Billy Blaise
Dufala and Steven Dufala will be teaching
“Found Objects” (Dumpster Diving), which was
filled within a few hours of registration. Grieg
will also teach “Shop Practices” which familiarizes
the entire school with the correct use
of power and hand tools. Previously existing
courses such “Stone Carving,” taught by Steve
Nocella, have been re-energized, while Shane
Stratton’s foundry course is filled to capacity
with students pouring every week.
If I accept you as you are, I will make you worse. However, if I treat you as though you are
what you are capable of becoming, I help you become that. —Goethe
Goethe’s words exemplify Donald Caldwell’s philosophy towards his work as the Chairman
of PAFA’s Board of Trustees. Holding the institution—to which Caldwell has exhibited remarkable
dedication—to incredibly high standards, during his tenure as board chair, the Academy
has seen unprecedented growth. Because of his passion for our students and belief that we
have an obligation to assist any qualified student whose talent would be nurtured by attending
PAFA, this year, a scholarship fund will be established in Donald Caldwell’s name.
“I am deeply honored by this recognition,” states Mr. Caldwell. “As a fervent advocate for
arts and culture in our community, knowing that there will be funds available for students in
need to study and train at PAFA is very gratifying to me.”
With special thanks to Mrs. Samuel M.V. Hamilton and her continued commitment to PAFA,
the Academy has been given a $500,000 challenge grant to establish the scholarship fund in
Caldwell’s name.
First elected to the Board of Trustees in 1994 and Chairman since 1997, Mr. Caldwell
has been an integral part of PAFA’s success. During his tenure, the Academy expanded into
the Samuel M.V. Hamilton Building, providing much needed gallery space as well as new
offices, studios, and classrooms; the Museum has received national acclaim for the variety
and quality of its exhibitions; the School has initiated a BFA program; enrollments continue to
rise; the level of talent exhibited by the students places PAFA at the forefront of the nation’s
art schools; and Bacchanal!, the annual wine auction and gala has become one of the major
fundraisers of the year.
Currently, 81% of all Academy students receive financial aid. Scholarship money helps
PAFA attract the best Certificate and BFA students by allowing the Academy to compete
with private schools that can offer more money and state schools that can offer lower tuition.
Scholarship money also helps PAFA attract the most talented MFA candidates by allowing the
Academy to compete with other top graduate schools that frequently offer full tuition.
At present, Certificate and BFA applications are up 15%, MFA applications are up 20%,
and prospective student tours have increased significantly. PAFA is asking for everyone’s assistance
in meeting this worthwhile challenge in Mr. Caldwell’s name. All gifts are tax deductible
and will enable us to recruit the finest talent of future PAFA alumni.
Women’s Board Events Highlight Exhibitions
The Women’s Board Preview Party on May 7 kicked off
the 108th Annual Student Exhibition. Presented by Bollinger
Insurance with additional support provided by Sandcastle
Strategy Group, the Preview Party benefited student scholarships
at PAFA. Preview Party Co-chairs were Christine H.
Berrettini and Alicia A. Sterling. This festive event offered
guests the first chance to view and purchase more than 1,000
paintings, sculpture, works on paper, and installations created
by Academy students on the verge of their professional
careers. Featured guest Mayor Michael A. Nutter addressed
the students and guests, expressing his support for PAFA and
the arts in Philadelphia. Underwritten by the Women’s Board,
the Annual Student Exhibition featured works by Bachelor of
Fine Arts students, third- and fourth-year Certificate program
students, and Master of Fine Arts students, as well as award
recipients. More than $160,000 in scholarship and travel
funding was granted to students this year. Included in these
awards were the prestigious Cresson, Scheidt, Ware Memorial,
and Women’s Board Travel Scholarships.
On June 25, the Women’s Board preview party, Opposites
Attract, launched the opening of two complementary solo
exhibitions, Sidney Goodman: Man in the Mirror and Elizabeth
Osborne: The Color of Light. Both artists are Philadelphia
residents and members of the PAFA faculty. This event, sponsored
by The Haverford Trust Company to benefit the School
at PAFA, was organized by Chair Susan Eaton Guill assisted
by Women’s Board members Ana Maria Keene, Julie Jensen
Bryan and Mary MacGregor Mather, as well as Dolores Curtis.
Honorary Chairs were Mayor Michael A. Nutter and Mrs. Lisa
J. Nutter.
The preview party for Man in the Mirror and The Color of
Light was the first opportunity to view many of these works
and to meet the artists prior to the public opening. Since the
1960s, Goodman has played a significant role in maintaining
the vitality of figurative art in the United States. A full professor
of painting at PAFA since 1978, Goodman has had a profound
effect upon his students, many of whom, like Bo Bartlett and
Trustee Steve L. Sanders Leads Steering
Committee for Hendricks Exhibition
In addition to a 24-year background in financial services,
PAFA Trustee Steve Sanders has always been deeply dedicated
to community involvement. To that end, Sanders has
recently accepted the role as Chairman of the steering committee
for PAFA’s forthcoming exhibition, Barkley L. Hendricks:
Birth of the Cool and answered these questions for Preview
about his interest in the artist and the committee’s efforts.
Prior to being invited to chair the Barkley L.
Hendricks: Birth of the Cool steering committee, were
you previously familiar with Barkley Hendricks’ work?
I was somewhat familiar with Hendricks’ work. As an entrepreneur,
the creative process that drives and motivates artists
has always intrigued me, and when I was exposed to more of
Hendricks’ art, my curiosity was stoked further.
What are your impressions and thoughts regarding
Hendricks’ work?
Hendricks’ works to me are timeless and make a significant
impact. His works speak of and from an era that continues to
quietly yet powerfully shape the definition of cool for many.
Why did you elect to become involved in the
steering committee?
I enjoy art much like a great meal, fine wine, enlightening
book or inspiring speech. Each leaves an impression, an imprint
on one’s desire to inspire and dig within to tap into
that source that helps us create.
What are your goals for the committee?
My goals for the committee are: 1) To work together to
offer this wonderful exhibition; 2) To provide an opportunity
for people of various backgrounds in the Philadelphia area to
enjoy Hendricks’ art and what it says; and 3) To acquaint new
visitors to the rich history of PAFA and all that it has to offer.
many others.
USArtists is coming home to PAFA in 2010. The 18th
USArtists American Fine Art Show will be held October 1 - 3,
2010 in the Samuel M.V. Hamilton Building at 128 North Broad
Street. The Preview Gala will be Thursday, September 30. This
is an exciting change of location for USArtists, and the Women’s
Board event chairs, Diana H. Bittel, Connie Kay, Sandra L.
Nesbitt, Elizabeth O’Connell, and Alicia A. Sterling, are working
with PAFA to create the best show yet. For more information,
please contact the Women’s Board office at 215-972-7639.
What potential result
of the committee’s
work are you most
excited about
achieving?
The multi-cultural
and multi-generational
aspects of an exhibition
such as Birth of the Cool
on display at an institution of PAFA’s renown is a tremendous
opportunity for people from various walks of life to celebrate
a world famous homegrown talent. Through this exhibition we
will open minds and hearts as well as break a few traditional
barriers. We will introduce the art of “cool” to many.
Why do you feel it is important to help promote
Hendricks’ work to a broader audience?
Many people think art is untouchable or beyond their reach.
Whether these hurdles are economic, racial or driven by age
or gender, art can speak to many people in different ways. In
this fast-paced world of ours, it is important to note that art
can also listen, it quiets the mind. We need more exposure to
art for a broader audience to continue to grow and appreciate
our differences. Art enables us to see beyond our own neighborhoods
and biases. It provides new perspectives.
How do you think the exhibition and its spectrum of
programs will impact PAFA and its place in
Philadelphia’s cultural community?
The exhibition will have a positive impact on PAFA in two
ways: First, it will serve as a clarion call to many people in the
area that art is and can be cool; and secondly, it will introduce
the majesty and rich history of PAFA to thousands of new
visitors.
Since 1999, Bacchanal! has been consistently recognized as
a premier wine and auction event in the Philadelphia region and
has garnered a national reputation. To date, the event has raised
more than $2.4 million to help fund PAFA’s student scholarships
and education programs and this vibrant support has
been invested in the Philadelphia community to help promote art
education.
Bacchanal! 2009 will include wine tastings, silent and live
auctions of unique items and travel destinations, a gourmet dinner
highlighting Chilean culinary delicacies, and dancing. Hugh
Hildesley of Sotheby’s in Manhattan will be the auctioneer for the
evening. During Bacchanal! 2009, PAFA’s prestigious Thomas
Throughout the week preceding Bacchanal!, a series of exclusive
gourmet winemaker dinners will take place in private homes,
each pairing a distinguished Chilean winemaker with a local
celebrity chef.
In addition, plans are underway for Bacchanal! 2009 to be
preceded by an international symposium, comprised of panelists
that will discuss the vibrant trade and economic and investment
opportunities that exist between Chile and the United States.
The symposium will present current Chile and U.S. collaborations
including those in the fields of agriculture, natural resources and
energy, legal and financial services, cross border and tax policies,
migration, and additional industries and markets. This unique
event will bring together key stakeholders to discuss contemporary
and prospective U.S. and Chilean opportunities and innovations,
with representatives from the business and academic
communities, and policymakers.
Bacchanal! is PAFA’s flagship wine affair, raising up to
$500,000 annually. PAFA is authorized to host Bacchanal! by the
Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board and is generously supported
by The Haverford Trust Company, this year’s presenting sponsor.
