We’re Having a Party and Philadelphia is Invited!
PAFA’s Party on the Plaza, Saturday, October 1
PAFA’s long-awaited civic space Lenfest Plaza is now complete.
This beautifully designed space unifies PAFA’s Historic
Landmark Building and the Samuel M.V. Hamilton Building into
a spectacular Center City campus. It will serve as a destination
for arts audiences and Pennsylvania Convention Center
visitors, and provide a starting point for Philadelphia’s famed
Museum Mile.
In celebration of the grand opening of this new jewel in the
City’s cultural landscape, please join us for PAFA’s Party on the
Plaza. The party is scheduled to begin at noon and will last long
into the night. The defining moment of the day’s festivities will
be at sunset with the inaugural lighting of Paint Torch, a sculpture
by world-renowned American artist Claes Oldenburg.
The installation of Oldenburg’s towering 53-foot high sculpture
in the form of an illuminated paintbrush will make Philadelphia
home to four large-scale public sculptures by the artist,
more than any other city in the world.
PAFA will present works by other artists in a second space
on the plaza for rotating displays. At the event, PAFA will unveil
Grumman Greenhouse, a sculpture crafted from a decommissioned
U.S. warfare aircraft by PAFA alumnus and Philadelphia
artist Jordan Griska.
“We look forward to welcoming the community to Lenfest
Plaza to celebrate this new civic space and the works of
public art that will enhance the city’s landscape,” says David
R. Brigham, PAFA’s President and CEO. “The opening of the
plaza gives PAFA an extraordinary opportunity to provide a
new arts-focused gathering place that will invite visitors to our
museum and school, while enhancing PAFA’s role as a cultural
destination for regional and national visitors.”
Designed by Philadelphia-based, internationally renowned
landscape architecture firm OLIN, led by project architect and
OLIN partner David A. Rubin, Lenfest Plaza will offer an inviting
space for visitors to Philadelphia, city residents, students, museum
goers and art lovers. The plaza design includes a stage,
a three-part serpentine bench, mosaic pavers, a platform for
temporary sculpture, plantings, displays, lighting, and tables for
outdoor dining. “As an addition to Philadelphia’s urban fabric,
Lenfest Plaza accomplishes so many significant goals in the
continued positive growth of this great city,” says Rubin.
PAFA’s Party on the Plaza will feature activities and entertainment
for all ages. Below is the schedule of events:
The Family Arts Festival: 12 - 6 p.m.
What is the role of “place” in art?
Samuel M.V. Hamilton Building
October 22 – December 31, 2011
Member Reception: Friday, October 21,
6:30 - 8:30 p.m.
Occupying two floors of PAFA’s Hamilton Building,
HERE is an exhibition that considers how “place” is not
simply the geographic locality where an artist lives and
works but also the juice of lived experience—the subject
matter, material, concepts and freedoms that this space
provides. Recognizing how place influences and infiltrates
each artist’s work in diverse and complicated ways,
HERE explores how a sense of place exists in the work of
artists from six particular regions—Philadelphia, Cincinnati,
Phoenix, Raleigh-Durham, Detroit and Kansas City.
Continuing PAFA’s historical commitment to redefining
what constitutes American art, HERE looks toward
Jennifer Levonian, Still image from The Oven Sky (detail), 2011, Cut-out animation using watercolor and collage, Video 4 min 45
artists and curators who work in the regions, discussing
how the work of art is saturated with the artist’s concrete
experience of place, and giving voice to regionally based
practices that disclose this influence in a variety of ways.
For instance, in Scott Hocking’s works a sense of place
can be found in the glimpses of Detroit that appear in his
photographs, while in Arizona collective Postcommodity’s
video installations it is found in references to Native American
ritual and history. Kansas artist Michael Kruger refers
to hippy culture in Lawrence, while North Carolina artist
Glenda Wharton’s animated film paints childhood dreams
that allude to the segregated South. In HERE, place appears
in many guises, whether expressed directly in the
freedoms a space affords, the subject matter it provides,
or the material and conceptual needs that it satisfies.
Selected by PAFA’s Curator of Contemporary Art, Julien
Letter from the President
Lenfest Plaza is a reality. More
than a decade ago, PAFA’s Board
under the leadership of Donald
Caldwell envisioned a pedestrian
plaza that would unite our two buildings
into a campus and serve as a
destination. In 1999, an ordinance
was drafted by City Councilman
Darrell Clarke to close Cherry Street
between Broad and Carlisle Streets.
However, eliminating that short
stretch of Cherry Street was not
practical as long as it was a through street. In 2003, Gerry and
Marguerite Lenfest made an extraordinary pledge of support
for this project, making the project feasible if the street closure
could be accomplished.
The expansion of the Pennsylvania Convention Center
closed Cherry Street on the east side of Broad, directly opposite
PAFA. Now that Cherry was no longer an important artery,
at the end of 2009 Councilman Clarke led his bill through City
Council, which quickly approved the proposal. Throughout
the process, Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter gave his full
support and the City added generous financial assistance to
the project as part of its larger effort to enhance the pedestrian
friendliness of Center City.
PAFA’s Building Committee, chaired by Kevin Donohoe,
mounted a design competition and the world renowned landscape
architecture firm OLIN was chosen, with partner and
Rome Prize-winning architect David Rubin leading the team.
In a space just 200 by 40 feet, Rubin and his colleagues have
created an elegant urban plaza that invites visitors to congre-
gate, look at art, participate in arts programming, and enjoy
fine dining.
Also in 2009, the internationally famed sculptor Claes
Oldenburg accepted PAFA’s invitation to create a site-specific
work for Lenfest Plaza. His fifty-three-foot high Paint Torch is
a brilliant solution, as it meets the ground with a brush handle
that is just a foot in diameter at that point. The architectural
scale is dramatic, while the slender profile keeps the plaza
open and inviting. The giant paintbrush will become an icon for
PAFA and the City. While the brush is a clear reference to our
creative mission, the illuminated torch-bristles evoke Philadelphia’s
role in the founding of our nation.
At the west end of the Plaza, PAFA alumnus Jordan Griska
(’08) will site the first temporary sculpture on the oval platform.
His Grumann Greenhouse is a twenty-five foot high found
object sculpture. Through its repurposing of a military aircraft
and introduction of self-sustained plant environments, Griska
creates a modern Cincinnatus metaphor of swords hammered
into ploughshares.
The Plaza will not really feel complete until October 1 when
we dedicate it with the daylong celebration, PAFA’s Party
on the Plaza. Ranging from family activities to a dedication
ceremony, dinner, and dance party, we will serve the spectrum
of our friends and patrons. I hope to see you there!
PAFA Announces New Board Leadership
The trustees of the Pennsylvania
Academy of the Fine Arts
announced after a dynamic and
successful 15-year term, Donald
R. Caldwell has stepped down as
Chair of PAFA’s Board of Trustees
on June 30, 2011, the end of
the Academy’s fiscal year. He is
succeeded by PAFA Trustee and
Vice-Chair and Treasurer Kevin
F. Donohoe, who assumed the
Kevin F. Donohoe, PAFA Chair
chairmanship on July 1, 2011. As
Emeritus Chair, Mr. Caldwell will
remain an active member of the Board, co-chairing Bacchanal
2011, Philadelphia’s premier wine and auction event that has
raised over $3 million to help fund student scholarships and
education programs at PAFA.
“Being involved in the growth of this remarkable institution
has enriched my life in every aspect,” says Donald R. Caldwell.
“As we move forward into a new era for PAFA, it is with the
highest level of enthusiasm that I welcome Kevin Donohoe as
my successor. He cares deeply about PAFA’s mission and is
committed to the Academy’s continued leadership role in the
cultural life of this community.”
Founder and chairman of Cross Atlantic Capital Partners,
Inc., Donald R. Caldwell has been integral to PAFA’s ongoing
growth and continued success, spearheading the Academy’s
$35 million building and renovation campaign, as well as the
$7.5 million Lenfest Plaza project. In 2006, Mr. Caldwell, on
behalf of PAFA, teamed with the Philadelphia Museum of Art
to raise $68 million for the purchase of Eakins’s Gross Clinic,
currently on view in PAFA’s Historic Landmark Building. Under
Mr. Caldwell’s direction, PAFA began its first program of liberal
arts instruction, established a Chair and Department of Liberal
Arts, and won State Department of Education approval of its
first in-house Academy Bachelor of Fine Arts undergraduate
degree program.
“Donald Caldwell’s tenure as Board Chair spanned a period
of remarkable expansion and change for the institution, “ says
David R. Brigham, PAFA’s President & CEO. “Don directed
PAFA on a transformative course to secure PAFA’s position as
a cultural leader both regionally and nationally. We owe him an
enormous debt of gratitude. We now look to Kevin Donohoe,
who worked closely with Don, for leadership to meet the new
challenges as we move forward.”
Since joining PAFA’s Board of Trustees in 1991, Kevin F.
Donohoe, CEO of The Kevin F. Donohoe Company, Inc., has
served as Chair of the Finance as well as the Building and
Facilities committees. As the Board’s Vice-Chair and Treasurer,
Mr. Donohoe has been working closely with Mr. Caldwell over
the last 15 years. In these capacities, he oversaw the renovation
of PAFA’s Hamilton Building and put into place many of
the policies that have strengthened the institution’s financial
stability. Notably, PAFA has posted seven consecutive balanced
budgets and maintained full employment throughout the
recession.
“Don’s stewardship marks a compelling chapter in PAFA’s
history,” remarks Kevin Donohoe. “Following in his footsteps is
a tremendous inspiration. I look forward to guiding the Board at
a time of unprecedented strength and vitality, further expanding
the Academy’s audience and reach.”
Kevin Donohoe supports various civic and cultural nonprofit
PAFA Acquires Ocean Without a Shore Video Installation by Bill Viola
Historic Landmark Building, Morris Gallery
November 19, 2011 – Ongoing
Curator: Julien Robson, Curator of Contemporary Art
PAFA is proud to
announce the presentation
of Ocean Without
a Shore (2007), a
major video installation
by internationally
acclaimed artist Bill
Viola and a significant
new addition to the
museum’s collection.
Exhibited in the United
States for the first
time, this masterpiece
Bill Viola
of the genre, can be
viewed, admission
free, from November 19th onward, in the Morris
Gallery of PAFA’s Furness-Hewitt Building.
Originally shown in the 15th century Church
of the Oratorio San Gallo, in Venice, Italy, Ocean
Without a Shore is a complete sensory environment
that combines a reverence for the traditions
of figuration and realism in Western art with new
and cutting edge technology. Employing three
large monitors, its imagery revolves around single
figures emerging out of darkness. Approaching
slowly from behind an invisible wall of rushing
water, they appear hazy and ethereal in grainy
gray tones, and as they come closer they touch
the unseen barrier, making it visible as a powerful
broken torrent. Stepping through this wall of water
By Anna O. Marley, Curator of Historical
American Art
As a companion to the nationally touring
2012 exhibition Henry Ossawa Tanner:
Modern Spirit, PAFA and the University of
California Press are proud to publish a major
volume of essays with the same title, presenting
a complex overview of the pioneering
African American artist Henry O. Tanner
(1859-1937), a student at the Pennsylvania
Academy from 1879 to 1885. The most
complete scholarly publication on Tanner, the
book contains the work of scholars—French
and American, senior and emerging, art his-
they transform into full color, brought to life before
us and made present and real only, after a while,
to return into the void. Involving 24 people, this
process repeats seamlessly.
Inspired by the writings of Senegalese poet
Birago Diop, Viola’s work takes its title from
Andalusian Sufi mystic Ibn Arabi, who wrote, “The
Self is an ocean without a shore. Gazing upon
it has no beginning or end, in this world and the
next.” A profound and moving work of art whose
simple structure belies its complex conceptual
underpinnings, Ocean Without a Shore expresses
this sentient self and its manifold rites of passage.
Bathing the viewer in a sensorium of light and
sound, it inspires us to reflect upon fundamental
ideas about love, hope, sorrow, anxiety, being,
death, and regeneration.
Talking about Ocean Without a Shore, Bill Viola
states: “Presented as a series of encounters at
the intersection between life and death, the video
sequence documents a succession of individuals
slowly approaching out of darkness and moving
into the light in order to pass into the physical
world. Once incarnate, however, all beings realize
that their presence is finite and so they must
eventually turn away from material existence to
return from where they came. The cycle repeats
without end.”
The Morris Gallery is open during regular
museum hours and is free to the public.
Seeking to place Tanner in the context of other black artists, Olivier Meslay examines those
black artists working in Paris before Tanner’s arrival while Richard Powell surveys the subsequent
generations of African American artists whom Tanner impacted. Tanner’s expatriate experience is
the focus of four essays: Marc Simpson’s intensive study of the painting that established Tanner’s
international reputation, The Raising of Lazarus; Tyler Stovall’s interdisciplinary essay on African
American expatriates in Parisian culture; Jean-Claude Lesage’s presentation of the deep influence
upon Tanner’s work of his thirty-four years traveling and living in northern France; and Adrienne
Childs’ discussion of Tanner’s unique perspective on North Africa. The catalogue also features
chapters on Tanner and religion. Marcus Bruce explores the relationship of Tanner’s paintings
and his religious identity, Robert Cozzolino considers Tanner’s religious imagery in the context
of fin-de-siecle Symbolism in Europe, Hélène Valance analyzes Tanner’s “nocturnes” and their
relation to contemporary innovations in science and technology, and Alan Braddock proposes
Tanner’s navigation of the Judeo-Christian religious identity as “the beginning of the end of race.”
In a section devoted to Tanner’s style and techniques, Michael Leja examines the relationship
of Tanner’s paintings to mass visual culture, and scholars Brian Baade, Amber-Kerr Allison and
Jennifer Giaccai of the Smithsonian Institution discuss the findings of the first technical study of
Tanner’s experimentation with materials and methods.
Edited and introduced by Anna O. Marley, the organizing curator of this retrospective, this lavish
volume expands our understanding of Tanner’s place in art history, showing that his status as a
painter was deeply influenced by his race but not decided by it.
Hennessy Youngman & Nathaniel Snerpus
Present: The Grand Manner
Historic Landmark Building
November 5, 2011 – February 4, 2012
Curator: Julien Robson,
Curator of Contemporary Art
The Morris Gallery Program continues, wandering
upstairs into the galleries of PAFA’s Furness-Hewitt
Building, with Philadelphia based artist Jayson Musson’s
presentation of a critical intervention by Hennessy
Youngman and Nathaniel Snerpus.
In The Grand Manner, Musson’s Hip-hop art commentator
Hennessy Youngman—whose “Art Thoughtz”
Hennessy Youngman
videos have gone viral on the web—applies his sharp
witted cultural analysis to artworks in PAFA’s collection. While viewers listen to Youngman’s
take on American art history and art institutions, through both cell-phone self-guided
tours and videos situated in the galleries, Musson will also arrange for his art critic-atlarge,
Nathaniel Snerpus, to give a critical art historical perspective on both paintings and
architecture. New large-scale didactic labels written by Snerpus will make works in the
collection accessible to the broadest range of museum visitors.
Although best known through his popular web presence as Hennessy Youngman,
Jayson Musson has been previously visible in the public domain through a column called
Black Like Me that he wrote during 2007 for Philadelphia Weekly. He recently presented
his work in a solo show at Marginal Utility gallery in Philadelphia. Born in the Bronx,
Musson studied at the University of the Arts, receiving a BFA in photography in 2002, and
at the University of Pennsylvania where he graduated with an MFA in painting in 2011.
Musée d’Orsay, Paris, France
November 9-10, 2011
Using the career of Henry Ossawa Tanner as a starting point, this study day will explore
the century-long history of African American art and France, asking how racial and cultural
identities interplayed with transatlantic exchanges from fin-de-siècle cosmopolitanism into
the post-colonial age. A panel of international speakers including Renée Ater, Anna Lafont,
Richard Powell, Marc Simpson, Sarah Wilson, and Elvan Zabunyan will discuss the work of
artists traveling to Paris specifically and France more generally. Call Monica Zimmerman,
From the Desk of the Museum Director
This, to me, is still a very new desk
- I have only had the pleasure of sitting
at it since March 1st. Then I was
still coming back and forth from New
York; my family and I just settled into
Philadelphia in June. In my brief tenure
here I have learned a great deal
about this amazing place, although
I am acutely aware that, with more
than 200 years of history, this is a
learning process that will never end.
Coming from a non-collecting
museum focused exclusively on
contemporary art there are many
aspects of my job that are new to me,
particularly the care, conservation,
and growth of our amazing collection.
More on that in a moment. What is
familiar to me is the creative buzz that
surrounds PAFA – my background
is that of an artist turned educator
turned curator turned administrator.
At the heart of my career is a
deep and profound respect for, and
belief in, artists. Their creativity, often
messy, sometimes too controlling,
sometimes too loose, or too provocative,
or perplexing, is at the core of PAFA’s founding, and its
storied and sometimes perilous journey through the 19th, 20th,
and now 21st century. PAFA is in a place of great strength
now - thanks to the good work of my predecessor in this job,
David Brigham, and the Board, faculty, and staff.
We still have much to do.
One of our challenges is also one of our greatest assets, our
incredible Frank Furness building. Part gallery, part church,
part factory, part greenhouse, our Historic Landmark Building is
one of the greatest places on the planet in which to look at art.
In the long term we look to the maintenance and restoration of
our beloved building, particularly as the centenary of Furness’s
death approaches in 2012. You can see from this view of the
space above the gallery skylights (photo below left) what a
complex building this is, with its mix of 19th and 20th century
technologies.
Our immediate challenge is to encourage more people to
walk through our doors, which, to contemporary eyes, can
seem small and uninviting. In time we’ll be unveiling new signage
and banners to make our invitation clearer. Eventually we
will be introducing art to the exterior of our building to make our
presence as a place for art more pronounced. This is a return
to how the building was in the 19th century, when a marble
statue graced the plinth above our main entrance.
Our collection continues to grow, and one of my first official
duties was to select, along with my colleague Dean Jeffrey Carr
the recipient of the Judith MacGregor Caldwell Purchase Prize,
an annual purchase award from the Annual Student Exhibition.
We settled on a two-panel painting by Paul Metrinko, A
Picture Contest, which was painted on site on North Carlisle
Street, at the back of the Hamilton building. From the first day
I arrived here I watched Paul work on his large canvasses as
the construction of our new Lenfest Plaza proceeded around
him. Paul is, like so many of his peers here at PAFA, a talented
and focused artist, which was plain to see as he worked and
reworked sections of the canvas, moving figures and cars and
fences and bicycles as his composition evolved.
Not only did he create a wonderful painting, he marked
a particular moment in the long life of PAFA’s continuing
evolution.
Please stop in and see for yourself!
Dan Miller Makes a Gift to
PAFA’s Future
PAFA alumnus and current Graduate Program Chair,
Dan Miller, recently committed a planned gift to provide
endowment funds in support of the Color Woodcut Purchase
Prize at PAFA. Dan originally established the prize
in 1986, which is awarded by the Printmaking Faculty
for a color woodcut print that exhibits outstanding merit.
Dan’s recent planned gift will ensure the longevity of this
annual prize awarded during graduation ceremonies.
PAFA is extremely grateful for this special support of its
current and future students.
Did you know that charitable planned gifts can achieve
both estate tax and income tax savings, allowing you
to leave assets to your heirs that in many cases are not
subject to additional taxes? There are many ways a charitable
planned gift can help your family achieve its financial
and philanthropic goals, while supporting what matters to
you most at PAFA.
To learn more about how to include PAFA in your estate
plans, or for a personalized illustration of how a charitable
planned gift to PAFA could benefit you, please contact
Melissa DeRuiter, Executive Vice President of Development,
at 215-972-2002 or mderuiter@pafa.org. All
conversations are kept in strict confidence.
If you have included PAFA in your estate plans, please
From the Desk of
the Dean
By Jeffrey Carr, Executive Vice President of
Academic Affairs and Dean of the School
PAFA is justifiably proud of the long list of distinguished
graduates of its School. Our museum collections are full
of them: historic figures such as Charles Demuth and
Mary Cassatt, as well as recent stars such as Vincent
Desiderio and Barkley L. Hendricks.
One of the principle ways PAFA celebrates its alums
is through exhibitions in our museum. This summer has
seen a bumper crop of alums in the museum galleries.
PAFA’s museum hosted a wonderful show of emerging
artists titled Urbanism: Reimaging the Lived Environment.
Alumni Steven and Billy Dufala and 2006 MFA graduate
Amy Walsh exhibited in this show. Amy, who taught in our
Post-Baccalaureate program last year, created a huge environment
of cardboard and plastic walls, with peek holes
that invite you into miniature urban interiors and rooftop
vistas. The effect is mysterious, magical and evocative of
nighttime walks in Philadelphia, and poetic glimpses into
lighted interiors and darkened doorways.
In the School Gallery, Gift of the Women’s Board was
an exhibition of two 2010 graduates of the Masters
program, Katie Dillon and Reza Ghanad. Recipients of
the prestigious “One Year Out” award while students at
PAFA, the two alums created an exhibition that demonstrated
the range and quality of the work of our graduates.
Reza’s work is a mad cap tour through an artist’s
mind, with a visual overload of rich visual effects, arcane
art historic allusion, and mixed media painting techniques.
Katie Dillon Low exhibited a large hand-made boat that
manages to be both funny and disturbing; a ship of fools
metaphor with an empty table, the preparations for a long
voyage, and an empty birdcage from which the dove
has flown.
The work of these five artists has all the hallmarks of
what we want from our alums: a sense of craft, an appreciation
of the complex traditions of the visual arts, and an
extraordinary sense of visual and poetic imagination. We
are very proud of our alums. They continue to embody the
evolving traditions and cultural diversity of the fine arts
in America.
FACULTY SPOTLIGHT
The Dufala Brothers: Toilet tricycles, dumpster coffins and teaching at PAFA
The Dufala Brothers leaning against their 20 Yard Dumpster Coffin.
For the past seven years, Steven and Billy Blaise Dufala, known
as the Dufala Brothers, have been working on cutting-edge collaborative
art projects. PAFA alumni and faculty members since
2009, they practice in a variety of media, including sculpture,
theater, performance, music, digital media and drawing. The Dufala
Brothers also investigate the human condition by repurposing
industrial materials. As Andy Warhol used images of commercial
objects to draw attention to an avaricious consumer culture, so
the Dufala Brothers create start-to-finish object worlds, with a
contemporaneity that urges the viewer to reclaim an increasingly
besieged humanity.
“When we see something that is wrong, unfair, counterproductive,
wasteful and ridiculous, we want to initiate a dialogue,”
says Steven, the middle child in a family of five boys. “We start to
investigate, casting the net as wide as possible. Our role as artists
is to monitor what’s going on, we are barometers of society.”
“We like to work collectively,” adds Billy. “I jump on the bigpicture
ideas and Steven examines the perimeters. We are each
other’s sounding boards.”
Both Dufala brothers graduated from PAFA’s Certificate
ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT
Maureen Drdak: Beckoning Your Senses
Rabindra Shakya and Maureen Drdak
in Shakya Atelier.
In 2006 artist Maureen
Drdak traveled to Nepal, trekking
to the remote kingdom of
Lo Monthang in Upper Mustang
(NOVA “Lost Treasures
of Tibet”), an experience that
changed her life, leading to
her 2008 collaboration with
composer Andrea Clearfield
in the innovative Lung-Ta (The
Windhorse), a convergence
of Tibet-inspired dance
(choreography by Manfred
Fischbeck), painting and
music. Lung-ta is the mythic
horse that carries the prayers of aspirants—and the Tibetan
Buddhist Dharma—heavenward. It visualizes an ancient yet sophisticated
concept—that of the cosmic winds flowing through
and energizing the body of man. Drdak contributed three huge
prayer flags to the project, abstract variations on the wind
horse, incorporating a prayer for world peace written especially
for the project by a Senior Tibetan monk.
Lung-Ta was commissioned by Philadelphia-based Network
for New Music, which premiered the artistic collaboration in
2009. “As a simultaneous performance and exhibition of dance
music, and visual art, all your senses are beckoned,” says PAFA
alum ’75 Maureen Drdak. “I’ve always felt a close relationship
between music and visual art. Music reveals fragments
and glimpses of physical form and strengthens a particular
emotional force.” Lung-Ta will have its Midwest premiere at
University of Chicago’s Rockefeller chapel in 2012.
This spring, Drdak received a 2011-2012 Fulbright Award
for Nepal, enabling her to return to Nepal to actualize her
Prakriti Project, the first synthesis of painting and repoussé
metal work. The Newars of Nepal are today’s masters of the
repoussé form, and Drdak’s Prakriti Project presents a unique
contribution to the vocabulary of the visual arts in furthering the
dynamic expansion of cultural boundaries between Asia and
the West. She will return to her studies with Rabindra Shakya,
decendant of Kuber Singh Shakya, whose family’s artistic
legacy and lineage dates from 1601 and was patronized by the
Program. Billy Blaise Dufala graduated in 2003 with a Sculpture
major. At the Academy he was awarded the Cresson Travel
Scholarship, Valley National Gases Prize, The Alexander Prize,
and Philadelphia Mayor’s Award. Steven Dufala graduated in
2000 with a Printmaking major. He has been awarded PAFA’s
Cuff/Sammak Prize for Abstract Painting, the Wolf Scholarship in
Honor of Peter Paone, and the John R. Conner Printmaking Prize.
Recent art projects have included toilets affixed to bicycles,
an ice cream truck mashed with a military tank (for which they
received the prestigious West Prize in 2009), and drawings of
body parts intertwined and morphing into machines. Their 20
Yard Dumpster Coffin was included in PAFA’s summer exhibition
Urbanism: Reimagining the Lived Environment, the first piece
of art work to be produced entirely through RAIR, the non-profit
artist in residency program located within Revolution Recovery, a
construction waste recycling facility in northeast Philadelphia.
For the last two years the Dufala Brothers have been teaching
courses at PAFA on found material techniques, which explore
alternative methods to traditional art making practice, using
Philadelphia’s abandoned material as a basis for students’ new
work. As former Academy students, they bring unique insights
and ideas to the teaching process.
“I want to help the students navigate life at PAFA,” says Steven.
“I remember it super well. We also want to expand their frame
of reference. We’ve asked students to walk outside the building
– a distance of at least five blocks – and work on a project. It’s
necessary to constantly reinvestigate one’s relationship to one’s
surrounding.”
“It’s also important to prepare the students for life after PAFA,”
he adds. “I believe the quality of life issue may be a challenge for
them. Even though the students are adept at living with very little
in the way of traditional comfort, the ability to put off a decent
standard of living may not last forever, and it is an ingredient in a
successful/sustainable art-making practice.
Malla kings of Nepal.
Drdak connects deeply with the spiritual worldview of the
cultures of the Himalayas. While embracing the uniqueness of
these cultures, she also celebrates the inevitable bridging of
historically and socially disparate elements.
“Societies are rapidly changing, increasingly stretching
the limits of communal connection,” says Drdak. “Art can be
a powerful force for easing this dislocation; art can maintain
meaningful cultural identity and be a positive force for selfdefinition,
a grounding matrix enabling individuals to locate
themselves within their societies, and their world.”
educational workshops, 37 new docents will graduate in
September. The addition of this dedicated group of volunteers
will double our docent program to over 70 active
docents. This is the first class in five years and many were
eager to join last summer. Although they’ve spent a great
deal of time in our galleries and doing research on their
own, their education does not end with graduation. All of
PAFA’s volunteer guides have an exceptionally big task
ahead of them this year, as they prepare to tour two major
exhibitions, starting with HERE in the fall and culminating
with Henry Ossawa Tanner: Modern Spirit in the spring.
Join us in congratulating them on all their hard work and
PAFA Collection
Goes “LIVE”
Beginning the first week of September, visitors to our
website will be in for a big surprise. After two years of
behind-the-scenes work we are excited to announce
the arrival of our newly designed Collections portal and
expanded access to our collection on our website.
With the generous grant from The Albert M. Greenfield
Foundation, we were able to purchase a collections
database system called MIMSY XG. Jennifer Johns, our
data entry coordinator has been entering information into
MIMSY about each object in the collection and Barbara
Katus, our photo archivist has been photographing the
work. MIMSY simply takes the place of file cabinets and
lives on the museum staff’s computers. Internally, the staff
has access to about 9,000 object records and they use
MIMSY for creating exhibitions, educational tours, and to
track loans in/out to name a few daily activities. Externally,
Jennifer has been working with NetReach, our website
designers to connect the data in MIMSY to our website
for expanded public access.
Right now visitors to our on-line collection have access
to fewer than 1,000 objects from our more than 15,000
works. Objects are only searchable by artist, medium,
date and keyword and only paintings, works on paper and
sculpture are present. It was our goal using the Greenfield
grant to allow the public not only access to more works
in our collection but to expand search capabilities for
research, teaching, and visiting purposes.
Now visitors to the Collections portal will be greeted
with a stream-lined and visually dynamic portal. They will
have close to 7,000 objects to view, not only paintings,
works on paper and sculpture but decorative arts, ephemera
and architecture as well. The number of searchable
objects will grow weekly. Users will have greatly expanded
search capabilities. You will now be able to search not
only by artist, date, medium, and keyword, but by subject,
gender, collection, and accession number. Another special
feature will be the ability to find out what is on view
in the galleries and what is out on loan. Descriptions of
works have been included and more will be added as the
project goes along.
We are committed to making our collection assessable
to the widest possible audience. We are proud of this first
big step in that direction and hope you enjoy it as much
as we do.
HERE: What is the role of “place” in art?
(Continued from page 1)
idea of “regionalism” as an unfashionable term that references only the
parochial or the provincial, and highlights, instead, the fact that many communities
have begun to place greater importance on how history and place
define them in a globalized world. By presenting a diverse range of compelling
artistic practices seen through the eyes of curators who live and work
in the regions, HERE provides a platform for artists from six regions and
opens a broader discussion about what regionalism can mean to American
art today.
Artists represented in the exhibition are: Lewis Colburn, Jennifer Levonian,
Megawords,Tim Portlock / Michael Krueger, Erika Nelson, Aaron Storck,
Whoop Dee Doo / Bunk News, Paul Coors, Terence Hammonds, Katie
Parker and Guy Michael Davis / Liz Cohen, Scott Hocking, Chido Johnson,
Abigail Newbold / Elsewhere Collaborative, Harrison Haynes, Stacy-Lynn
Waddell, Glenda Wharton / Sue Chenoweth, Postcommodity, Aaron Rothman,
and Gregory Sale.
The exhibition curators are: Julien Robson, Curator of Contemporary Art
at PAFA; Christopher Cook, Director and Curator at the Salina Art Center,
Salina, Kansas; Mark Harris, Director of the School of Art at the University
of Cincinnati; Rebecca Hart, Associate Curator of Contemporary Art at the
Environmental Perspectives, A Landscape Show
Now on View in PAFA’s Alumni Sales Gallery
On view in PAFA’s Alumni Sales Gallery through October 23 is Environmental Perspectives, A Landscape
Show. This group exhibition features works by Alton Bowman, Philip Cohn, Beth Clark, Kevin Broad, Paul
Metrinko, John Pacer, Andrea Packard, Ben Pines, Sunny Ra, Judith Thomas, Elizabeth Wilson, and Julie Zahn.
The PAFA Alumni Sales Gallery celebrates the work by 12 artists who studied at the Academy from 1946-
2011. The Academy has a long history of artists who were inspired and influenced by landscape including
representation in its permanent collection by alumni Louis Sloan, Thomas Dougherty, and T. Alexander Harrison.
This exhibition focuses on work of varying perspectives and subjects from around the country. On view will be
Alton Bowman’s Wildflower Desk, reflecting his involvement in restoring and building marquetry furniture and
his passion for preservation of the native prairies in his hometown of Flower Mound, Texas. Andrea Packard
builds her piece, Dreaming of Redon, from collected papers and fabrics using memory and her reference for
nature.
Paul Metrinko, Philip Cohn, and Elizabeth Wilson employ a romantic and sensual approach to their subjects.
Metrinko, who is the recipient of the PAFA Purchase Prize for 2011, uses his paint to transform a dumpster into
a beautiful, colorful form. Cohn romanticizes the Philadelphia Waterworks with idyllic figures basking on the
grass. Wilson uses light, color, and form to create atmosphere of calm and solitary reflection.
Sunny Ra, Judith Thomas, and Beth Clark use memory and their medium to make unique landscapes that
transcend place and delve into the psychological and emotional. Passion for color is evident in most of these
artists’ works; however, Julie Zahn’s print and Ben Pines’s oil paintings exude a mysterious quality as well. And,
John Pacer’s Falling Sky, is playful and somber at the same time. Kevin Broad explores the balance between
color and shape to create a beautiful new reality.
Environmental Perspectives, A Landscape Show was juried by Bill Scott, a painter and printmaker who lives
in Philadelphia. Mr. Scott studied at PAFA in the 1970s and has been teaching there since 2006. He is represented
by the Hollis Gallery, New York, where he will have a solo exhibition in fall 2011. Pat Stewart is Adjunct
Associate Professor in Liberal Arts at University of the Arts in Philadelphia. Ms. Stewart teaches courses on
20th century and contemporary art and has published several articles.
Summer FUNdamentals Art Camp
Making a Difference for 27 Years
Summer FUNdamentals
Art Camp has offered
enriching, creative
experiences for campers
in PAFA’s beautiful
galleries and art studios
for the past 27 years.
This year 675 campers
enjoyed 24 different art
camps sessions, such as
Drawing, Painting, Basic
Animation, Photography,
Comic Books, Circus
Arts, Wearable Art and
much more.
Many campers have
returned year after year
Felicity Hicks enjoying a drawing class this
past summer.
and have gone on to pursue art careers. Felicity Hicks has attended
PAFA Summer camps and weekend classes and workshops for the
past seven years. In 2004 she was diagnosed with an Occipital
Tumor. Her family’s main concern was for her safety and recovery of
her eyesight and motor skills. PAFA was recommended by the guidance
counselor from her school. She believed that being involved in
art would help her recover focus and balance.
The experience turned out to benefit Felicity beyond comprehension.
Each year she excelled with rigorous enthusiasm in drawing,
painting, sculpting and cartooning. Her creativity was nurtured and
consequently she demonstrated artistic ability to the highest standard.
In 2009 she applied to The Arts Academy at Benjamin Rush and
CHAD (Charter High School of Architecture and Design). Felicity
had advanced level artwork for her two portfolios for admission. She
was accepted into both schools and now attends The Arts Academy
at Benjamin Rush. Her grandmother, Marge Hicks, reports that Judy
Ringold and her staff have supported and encouraged Felicity for
the past seven years and Felicity was fortunate to have been taught
by such great instructors. “Our greatest thanks to Judy and PAFA
for preparing Felicity for her future in fine arts.”
