Perspective: M<strong>in</strong>gled Yarn<br />

We are, we rightly claim, a rare comb<strong>in</strong>ation—one <strong>of</strong> two or three art <strong>in</strong>stitutions <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> nation<br />

comprised <strong>of</strong> both a museum and a school <strong>of</strong> f<strong>in</strong>e arts. And yet that catch phrase—a rare comb<strong>in</strong>ation—that<br />

captures much <strong>of</strong> what makes us so different can also be mislead<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

When Charles Willson Peale founded this <strong>in</strong>stitution <strong>in</strong> 1805, he didn’t set out to found a separate<br />

school and a separate museum. Quite <strong>the</strong> opposite. As Peale and <strong>the</strong> 71 o<strong>the</strong>r found<strong>in</strong>g members<br />

stated <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> articles <strong>of</strong> association, <strong>the</strong>ir object was to create an Academy “ to promote <strong>the</strong> cultivation<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> f<strong>in</strong>e arts.” Modeled on <strong>the</strong> New York Academy <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> F<strong>in</strong>e Arts and <strong>the</strong> Royal Academy, PAFA<br />

was created, <strong>in</strong> short, to educate American artists and to collect and exhibit <strong>the</strong>ir work. As envisioned<br />

by its founders, <strong>the</strong> Academy’s over-rid<strong>in</strong>g purpose—<strong>the</strong> purpose <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Museum and <strong>the</strong> School—<br />

was educational, and it has <strong>in</strong>sistently rema<strong>in</strong>ed so.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Museum’s extraord<strong>in</strong>ary collection <strong>of</strong> American art plays, for example, as important a role <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> education <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Academy’s students as it does <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> education <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> general public. On any given day, students can be seen copy<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />

great works <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> collection, and PAFA faculty and scholars across <strong>the</strong> country make use <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> collection to reflect upon<br />

American art, culture, and history both <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir classrooms and <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir published work. <strong>The</strong> weekly lecture series, Art-at-<br />

Lunch, is developed by both <strong>the</strong> Museum and <strong>the</strong> School. <strong>The</strong> Museum’s wide-rang<strong>in</strong>g public programs for K-12 students<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> region’s schools is closely coord<strong>in</strong>ated with <strong>the</strong> School, and <strong>the</strong> curators participate <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> critiques <strong>of</strong> student work <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> BFA and MFA programs. Six to eight PAFA students a year work part-time with <strong>the</strong> curatorial staff, and <strong>the</strong> museum <strong>of</strong>fers<br />

two <strong>in</strong>ternships to students each year.<br />

<strong>The</strong> dist<strong>in</strong>ction between <strong>the</strong> Museum and <strong>the</strong> School is uncerta<strong>in</strong>, almost purposely blurred <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> use <strong>of</strong> its facilities. <strong>The</strong><br />

School’s magnificent collection <strong>of</strong> casts is housed <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Museum where classes are daily taught. <strong>The</strong> Annual Student Exhibition<br />

and faculty shows take place <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Museum’s galleries, and faculty works—from Cecilia Beaux to Arthur Carles, from<br />

Thomas Eak<strong>in</strong>s to Louis Sloan—are an important part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> permanent collection. Even <strong>the</strong> history <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Academy is part <strong>of</strong><br />

a s<strong>in</strong>gle archive, not <strong>the</strong> archival history <strong>of</strong> a separate museum and a separate school.<br />

We are, to quote Shakespeare, “m<strong>in</strong>gled yarn.” In its wholeness, <strong>the</strong>n, PAFA is more than simply a museum and a school.<br />

It’s an Academy. And this is our special strength.<br />
