Student Spotlight: Hareem Tanvir<br />
PAFA’s Graduates its First Fulbright Scholar<br />
As commencement approaches, PAFA is look<strong>in</strong>g forward to graduat<strong>in</strong>g<br />
Hareem Tanvir from <strong>the</strong> MFA program. Not only is Tanvir PAFA’s first<br />
student from <strong>the</strong> Middle East to study here, fur<strong>the</strong>r<strong>in</strong>g our student body’s<br />
artistic diversity, but she is also <strong>the</strong> first MFA candidate to earn her degree<br />
as a Fulbright Scholar.<br />
Tanvir was raised <strong>in</strong> Karachi, <strong>the</strong> largest city and <strong>the</strong> f<strong>in</strong>ancial capital <strong>of</strong><br />
Pakistan and moved to Pakistan’s second largest city, Lahore, <strong>in</strong> 2001<br />
where she still resides. She has been <strong>in</strong>terested <strong>in</strong> art s<strong>in</strong>ce childhood and<br />
says that her parents have always encouraged her artistic endeavors and<br />
“have been my best critics.”<br />
In December <strong>of</strong> 2004, Tanvir received a BFA from Pakistan’s most<br />
prestigious art school, National College <strong>of</strong> Arts, <strong>in</strong> Lahore. As for her path<br />
towards becom<strong>in</strong>g a Fulbright Scholar, Tanvir began work<strong>in</strong>g as a teach<strong>in</strong>g<br />
assistant soon after receiv<strong>in</strong>g her Bachelor’s degree but ultimately felt <strong>the</strong><br />
need to pursue her Master’s.<br />
“After two years <strong>of</strong> work<strong>in</strong>g, I applied for a Fulbright scholarship and was<br />
lucky to receive this award for my MFA for <strong>the</strong> academic years <strong>of</strong> 2007 –<br />
2009,” says Tanvir. “I had applied to <strong>the</strong> Art Institute <strong>of</strong> Chicago and San<br />
Francisco Institute <strong>of</strong> Art. I did hear back from Art Institute <strong>of</strong> Chicago, but<br />
I wanted to go to a school where I could experience more <strong>of</strong> a traditional<br />
pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g environment which became a reason that I chose PAFA.”<br />
At PAFA, Tanvir has been work<strong>in</strong>g on both pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g and photography<br />
and is benefit<strong>in</strong>g greatly from <strong>the</strong> faculty, comment<strong>in</strong>g, “I th<strong>in</strong>k PAFA has a<br />
nice group <strong>of</strong> critics whom I f<strong>in</strong>d equally encourag<strong>in</strong>g for both my mediums.”<br />
After <strong>the</strong> Annual Student Exhibition and graduation, Tanvir plans entail<br />
return<strong>in</strong>g to Pakistan <strong>in</strong> June to teach and work as an <strong>in</strong>dependent artist.<br />

Accessibility<br />
<strong>The</strong> Samuel M. V. Hamilton Build<strong>in</strong>g is accessible<br />
from Broad Street. An accessible entrance to <strong>the</strong><br />
Historic Landmark Build<strong>in</strong>g is located at Cherry<br />
and Burns Streets. <strong>The</strong> Burns Street Elevator<br />
provides access to <strong>the</strong> Gallery Floor. Visitors can<br />
access this entrance by push<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> call button at<br />
<strong>the</strong> bottom <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> front stairs <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Museum, or<br />
