Student Spotlight: Hareem Tanvir
PAFA’s Graduates its First Fulbright Scholar
As commencement approaches, PAFA is looking forward to graduating
Hareem Tanvir from the MFA program. Not only is Tanvir PAFA’s first
student from the Middle East to study here, furthering our student body’s
artistic diversity, but she is also the first MFA candidate to earn her degree
as a Fulbright Scholar.
Tanvir was raised in Karachi, the largest city and the financial capital of
Pakistan and moved to Pakistan’s second largest city, Lahore, in 2001
where she still resides. She has been interested in art since childhood and
says that her parents have always encouraged her artistic endeavors and
“have been my best critics.”
In December of 2004, Tanvir received a BFA from Pakistan’s most
prestigious art school, National College of Arts, in Lahore. As for her path
towards becoming a Fulbright Scholar, Tanvir began working as a teaching
assistant soon after receiving her Bachelor’s degree but ultimately felt the
need to pursue her Master’s.
“After two years of working, I applied for a Fulbright scholarship and was
lucky to receive this award for my MFA for the academic years of 2007 –
2009,” says Tanvir. “I had applied to the Art Institute of Chicago and San
Francisco Institute of Art. I did hear back from Art Institute of Chicago, but
I wanted to go to a school where I could experience more of a traditional
painting environment which became a reason that I chose PAFA.”
At PAFA, Tanvir has been working on both painting and photography
and is benefiting greatly from the faculty, commenting, “I think PAFA has a
nice group of critics whom I find equally encouraging for both my mediums.”
After the Annual Student Exhibition and graduation, Tanvir plans entail
returning to Pakistan in June to teach and work as an independent artist.

The Academy offers a four-year Certificate,
Academy B.F.A., B.F.A. in conjunction with the

Accessibility
The Samuel M. V. Hamilton Building is accessible
from Broad Street. An accessible entrance to the
Historic Landmark Building is located at Cherry
and Burns Streets. The Burns Street Elevator
provides access to the Gallery Floor. Visitors can
access this entrance by pushing the call button at
the bottom of the front stairs of the Museum, or
at the corner of Cherry and Burns; Security staff
will meet the caller. Wheelchairs are available,
and restrooms are accessible. Guided tours are
available for people with physical or mental disabilities,
upon request.
