<strong>Man</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Mirror</strong><br />
June 26 – September 20, 2009<br />
Annenberg Gallery<br />
By Julien Robson, Curator <strong>of</strong> Contemporary Art<br />
S<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>the</strong> 1960s, <strong>Sidney</strong><br />
<strong>Goodman</strong> has played a<br />
significant role <strong>in</strong> ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />
<strong>the</strong> vitality <strong>of</strong> figurative art <strong>in</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> United States. Mak<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />
figure <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> modern urban<br />
landscape his subject matter, he has developed<br />
an approach that fuses images from<br />
life, photography, and <strong>the</strong> media <strong>in</strong>to compositions<br />
that are both arrest<strong>in</strong>g and disquiet<strong>in</strong>g.<br />
Sett<strong>in</strong>g him apart from o<strong>the</strong>r figurative<br />
pa<strong>in</strong>ters <strong>of</strong> his generation, such as Philip<br />
Pearlste<strong>in</strong> and Alex Katz, <strong>Goodman</strong>’s work<br />
has always ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong>ed an air <strong>of</strong> mystery verg<strong>in</strong>g<br />
on <strong>the</strong> metaphysical. As early as 1963,<br />
Time Magaz<strong>in</strong>e described <strong>Goodman</strong>’s pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>gs<br />
as “stemm<strong>in</strong>g from <strong>the</strong> most humdrum<br />
<strong>of</strong> sights, which he transforms <strong>in</strong>to an image<br />
that seems to have endless ramifications and<br />
is always part <strong>of</strong> a mystery.”<br />
<strong>Goodman</strong>’s works on paper are a central<br />
and powerful element <strong>in</strong> his work and over<br />
<strong>the</strong> years he has created a body <strong>of</strong> draw<strong>in</strong>gs,<br />

gouaches, and watercolors that explore <strong>the</strong><br />
<strong>in</strong>nermost aspects <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> human condition.<br />
As with his pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>gs, <strong>Goodman</strong>’s draw<strong>in</strong>gs<br />
result from collag<strong>in</strong>g images culled from <strong>the</strong><br />
media and from a personal archive <strong>of</strong> photos<br />
and sketches. Adapt<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>se sources, he<br />
approaches his subject matter through a lens<br />
whose scope encompasses birth and death,<br />
aggression and sensuality, love and compassion.<br />
Rendered through a rigorous technique<br />
that resonates <strong>in</strong> his expressive use <strong>of</strong><br />
charcoal and oil pastel, <strong>Goodman</strong>’s draw<strong>in</strong>gs<br />
explore <strong>the</strong> spectrum <strong>of</strong> human emotions<br />
rang<strong>in</strong>g from primal desire to a tender, and<br />
occasionally melancholic long<strong>in</strong>g.<br />
<strong>The</strong> first major presentation <strong>of</strong> <strong>Goodman</strong>’s<br />
works on paper, this exhibition consists <strong>of</strong><br />
more than 60 draw<strong>in</strong>gs and watercolors<br />
<strong>the</strong> artist has made s<strong>in</strong>ce 1980. Br<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>g<br />
toge<strong>the</strong>r large- and small-scale works, <strong>the</strong><br />
exhibition explores how <strong>Goodman</strong> uses and<br />

Long recognized by critics and<br />
her peers as one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> most<br />
<strong>in</strong>novative and dar<strong>in</strong>g Philadelphia-based<br />
artists <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> last forty<br />
years, <strong>Elizabeth</strong> <strong>Osborne</strong> (born<br />
1936) has tirelessly explored<br />
<strong>the</strong> psychologically-charged space between<br />
abstraction and realism. <strong>Osborne</strong> studied<br />
at PAFA from 1954-58 and has been a<br />
faculty member here s<strong>in</strong>ce 1963. A prolific<br />
and frequent exhibitor <strong>in</strong> Philadelphia and<br />
throughout <strong>the</strong> United States, <strong>Osborne</strong> has<br />
produced a multivalent and challeng<strong>in</strong>g body<br />
<strong>of</strong> work that has shifted tone and content<br />
gradually s<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>the</strong> 1960s. Although wellknown<br />
to local audiences, <strong>the</strong>re has never<br />
been a full survey <strong>of</strong> her work. This exhibition<br />
and its accompany<strong>in</strong>g publication will<br />
reveal <strong>the</strong> range, depth, and importance <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>Osborne</strong>’s art and place it <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> context <strong>of</strong><br />

Perspective: M<strong>in</strong>gled Yarn<br />
We are, we rightly claim, a rare comb<strong>in</strong>ation—one <strong>of</strong> two or three art <strong>in</strong>stitutions <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> nation<br />
comprised <strong>of</strong> both a museum and a school <strong>of</strong> f<strong>in</strong>e arts. And yet that catch phrase—a rare comb<strong>in</strong>ation—that<br />
captures much <strong>of</strong> what makes us so different can also be mislead<strong>in</strong>g.<br />
When Charles Willson Peale founded this <strong>in</strong>stitution <strong>in</strong> 1805, he didn’t set out to found a separate<br />
school and a separate museum. Quite <strong>the</strong> opposite. As Peale and <strong>the</strong> 71 o<strong>the</strong>r found<strong>in</strong>g members<br />
stated <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> articles <strong>of</strong> association, <strong>the</strong>ir object was to create an Academy “ to promote <strong>the</strong> cultivation<br />
<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> f<strong>in</strong>e arts.” Modeled on <strong>the</strong> New York Academy <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> F<strong>in</strong>e Arts and <strong>the</strong> Royal Academy, PAFA<br />
was created, <strong>in</strong> short, to educate American artists and to collect and exhibit <strong>the</strong>ir work. As envisioned<br />
by its founders, <strong>the</strong> Academy’s over-rid<strong>in</strong>g purpose—<strong>the</strong> purpose <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Museum and <strong>the</strong> School—<br />
was educational, and it has <strong>in</strong>sistently rema<strong>in</strong>ed so.<br />
<strong>The</strong> Museum’s extraord<strong>in</strong>ary collection <strong>of</strong> American art plays, for example, as important a role <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> education <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
Academy’s students as it does <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> education <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> general public. On any given day, students can be seen copy<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />
great works <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> collection, and PAFA faculty and scholars across <strong>the</strong> country make use <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> collection to reflect upon<br />
American art, culture, and history both <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir classrooms and <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir published work. <strong>The</strong> weekly lecture series, Art-at-<br />
Lunch, is developed by both <strong>the</strong> Museum and <strong>the</strong> School. <strong>The</strong> Museum’s wide-rang<strong>in</strong>g public programs for K-12 students<br />
<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> region’s schools is closely coord<strong>in</strong>ated with <strong>the</strong> School, and <strong>the</strong> curators participate <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> critiques <strong>of</strong> student work <strong>in</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> BFA and MFA programs. Six to eight PAFA students a year work part-time with <strong>the</strong> curatorial staff, and <strong>the</strong> museum <strong>of</strong>fers<br />
two <strong>in</strong>ternships to students each year.<br />
<strong>The</strong> dist<strong>in</strong>ction between <strong>the</strong> Museum and <strong>the</strong> School is uncerta<strong>in</strong>, almost purposely blurred <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> use <strong>of</strong> its facilities. <strong>The</strong><br />
School’s magnificent collection <strong>of</strong> casts is housed <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Museum where classes are daily taught. <strong>The</strong> Annual Student Exhibition<br />
and faculty shows take place <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Museum’s galleries, and faculty works—from Cecilia Beaux to Arthur Carles, from<br />
Thomas Eak<strong>in</strong>s to Louis Sloan—are an important part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> permanent collection. Even <strong>the</strong> history <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Academy is part <strong>of</strong><br />
a s<strong>in</strong>gle archive, not <strong>the</strong> archival history <strong>of</strong> a separate museum and a separate school.<br />
We are, to quote Shakespeare, “m<strong>in</strong>gled yarn.” In its wholeness, <strong>the</strong>n, PAFA is more than simply a museum and a school.<br />
It’s an Academy. And this is our special strength.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Pennsylvania Academy <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> F<strong>in</strong>e Arts has one <strong>of</strong><br />

people through <strong>the</strong> galleries, we tend to gravitate to<br />

<strong>the</strong> Dean<br />
<strong>The</strong> Figurative Tradition<br />
at PAFA<br />
By Jeffrey Carr, Senior Vice President <strong>of</strong><br />
Academic Affairs, Dean <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> School <strong>of</strong> F<strong>in</strong>e Arts<br />
<strong>The</strong> School <strong>of</strong> F<strong>in</strong>e Arts at PAFA is well known for its<br />
dist<strong>in</strong>guished tradition <strong>of</strong> figurative art. Specifically, it is<br />
a tradition <strong>of</strong> pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g people large-scale, at or near life<br />
size, <strong>in</strong> a representational or naturalistic manner. It is a<br />
style characterized by <strong>the</strong> use <strong>of</strong> light and shade to model<br />
form, more or less “realistic” draw<strong>in</strong>g with an emphasis<br />
on depict<strong>in</strong>g people <strong>in</strong> a specific and believable space.<br />
<strong>The</strong> style is representational, but this does not mean it is<br />
always realistic. PAFA’s figurative tradition has <strong>of</strong>ten used<br />
<strong>the</strong> figure to depict emotional, dramatic, or even fantasybased<br />
subject matters.<br />
Thomas Eak<strong>in</strong>s is, <strong>of</strong> course, our resident old master <strong>of</strong><br />
realistic figurative pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g. His Gross Cl<strong>in</strong>ic was, and still<br />
is, a powerful and highly dramatic realist masterpiece. It is<br />
revolutionary <strong>in</strong> its dramatic realism, but it traces its tradition<br />
clearly to Rembrandt, Velasquez, and <strong>the</strong> great realist<br />
masters <strong>of</strong> Europe. In PAFA’s more recent history, faculty<br />
members Ben Kamihira and Arthur DeCosta carried on<br />
this realist, figurative tradition. In <strong>the</strong> Academy <strong>of</strong> today,<br />
<strong>the</strong> dist<strong>in</strong>guished faculty members <strong>Sidney</strong> <strong>Goodman</strong><br />
and V<strong>in</strong>cent Desiderio are contemporary grand masters<br />
<strong>of</strong> this dramatic and evocative tradition. PAFA artists Bo<br />
Bartlett, Barkley Hendricks, Wade Schuman, Brett Bigbee<br />
and many o<strong>the</strong>r large-scale figure pa<strong>in</strong>ters are prom<strong>in</strong>ent<br />
participants <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> national art scene.<br />
But traditions do not ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>mselves. As anybody<br />
who has ever tried to pa<strong>in</strong>t a nose can tell you, to pa<strong>in</strong>t<br />
and draw <strong>the</strong> figure skillfully, mean<strong>in</strong>gfully, and with style<br />
requires an enormous amount <strong>of</strong> effort, practice, and<br />
expert guidance. PAFA is blessed with a large faculty <strong>of</strong><br />
master artists representative <strong>of</strong> many different traditions<br />
<strong>of</strong> art mak<strong>in</strong>g. But <strong>the</strong> Academy’s figurative tradition is<br />
especially strong, and is ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong>ed by a faculty <strong>of</strong> skilled<br />
and imag<strong>in</strong>ative figurative pa<strong>in</strong>ters. Al Gury, Scott Noel,<br />
Patricia Traub, Doug Martenson, Alex Kanevsky, Renee<br />
Foulks, Bruce Samuelson, Peter van Dyck and o<strong>the</strong>rs are<br />
masters <strong>of</strong> realist figure pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g, and actively teach this<br />
tradition to a current generation. <strong>The</strong> results are apparent<br />
to anyone who has attended <strong>the</strong> Annual Student Exhibition,<br />
and who visits area galleries. Our students cont<strong>in</strong>ue<br />
to excel <strong>in</strong> this demand<strong>in</strong>g artform, and go on to establish<br />
careers as successful practic<strong>in</strong>g artists. It is a PAFA tradition<br />
that dates back to Eak<strong>in</strong>s, and it is alive and well <strong>in</strong><br />

significant disadvantage <strong>in</strong> transferr<strong>in</strong>g to PAFA. <strong>The</strong><br />
creation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Academy BFA changed all that. Thus,<br />
<strong>the</strong> first-ever transfer agreement was signed between<br />
PAFA and Camden County College (CCC).<br />
PAFA’s leadership team, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g President Dr.<br />
Edward Lewis, jo<strong>in</strong>ed CCC’s president, Dr. Raymond<br />
Yannuzzi, Vice President for Academic Affairs, Dr.<br />
Margaret Hamilton, Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Kay Klotzbach, and<br />
several o<strong>the</strong>rs to celebrate this historic occasion with<br />
a luncheon and sign<strong>in</strong>g ceremony held <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Sculpture Study<br />
Center. <strong>The</strong> sign<strong>in</strong>g was covered <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> local press <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g<br />
<strong>The</strong> Philadelphia Inquirer and KYW Radio.<br />
This event was historic for two reasons: it is ano<strong>the</strong>r PAFA<br />
first, and it will lead to a strong partnership between <strong>the</strong> two<br />
<strong>in</strong>stitutions by permitt<strong>in</strong>g CCC students to transfer to PAFA<br />
with significantly more credits on <strong>the</strong>ir record. Additionally,<br />
Dr. Lewis took <strong>the</strong> opportunity to announce a new scholarship<br />
<strong>in</strong>itiative entitled “<strong>The</strong> Camden Connection” which will be <strong>of</strong>fered<br />
exclusively to CCC students based on <strong>the</strong> merit <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir<br />
academic and artistic portfolios. Yet ano<strong>the</strong>r first!<br />

<strong>the</strong> struggle for existence. Explor<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> full range <strong>of</strong> human<br />
emotions, <strong>Goodman</strong>’s draw<strong>in</strong>gs describe an arc <strong>of</strong> experience<br />
that leads from violence and trauma, through sexual passion<br />
and <strong>the</strong> eroticism <strong>of</strong> dreams, to <strong>the</strong> warm and tender portrayal<br />
<strong>of</strong> his wife, his children, and his dy<strong>in</strong>g mo<strong>the</strong>r. And at <strong>the</strong><br />
fulcrum <strong>of</strong> this arc, <strong>the</strong> artist depicts himself as a man question<strong>in</strong>g<br />

ambiguities as he gazes upon his own obscured reflection <strong>in</strong><br />

Born <strong>in</strong> Philadelphia, <strong>Sidney</strong> <strong>Goodman</strong> studied at <strong>the</strong><br />
Philadelphia College <strong>of</strong> Art (now University <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Arts) from<br />
1954-58, and taught <strong>the</strong>re from 1960 to 1978. In 1962 he<br />
was <strong>in</strong>cluded <strong>in</strong> his first major museum show, Recent Pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>gs<br />
USA: <strong>The</strong> Figure, at <strong>the</strong> Museum <strong>of</strong> Modern Art, New<br />
York, and subsequently has been exhibited widely, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g a<br />

<strong>in</strong> 1995. <strong>Goodman</strong> has been a member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> faculty at PAFA<br />

We are currently work<strong>in</strong>g on o<strong>the</strong>r transfer agreements.<br />
With<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> year, we hope to sign agreements with <strong>the</strong> Community<br />
College <strong>of</strong> Philadelphia, Northampton Community College,<br />
Montgomery County Community College, as well as Montgomery<br />
College (MD). All <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se agreements will encourage<br />
transfer students to consider PAFA for <strong>the</strong>ir BFA degrees.<br />
<strong>The</strong>se students will br<strong>in</strong>g a wealth <strong>of</strong> cultural and artistic diversity<br />
to our school <strong>of</strong> f<strong>in</strong>e arts and make us a major player <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
world <strong>of</strong> talented transfer students. As community colleges<br />
see dramatic <strong>in</strong>creases <strong>in</strong> enrollments due to <strong>the</strong> current fiscal<br />
crisis, we will all benefit from <strong>the</strong>se historic agreements.<br />
s<strong>in</strong>ce 1979 and lives and works <strong>in</strong> Philadelphia. Includ<strong>in</strong>g<br />
documentation from <strong>the</strong> studio and <strong>the</strong> artist’s sketchbooks,<br />
<strong>the</strong> exhibition will be an opportunity to experience <strong>the</strong> power <strong>of</strong><br />

ideas.<br />

Hareem Tanvir from <strong>the</strong> MFA program. Not only is Tanvir PAFA’s first<br />
student from <strong>the</strong> Middle East to study here, fur<strong>the</strong>r<strong>in</strong>g our student body’s<br />
artistic diversity, but she is also <strong>the</strong> first MFA candidate to earn her degree<br />
as a Fulbright Scholar.<br />
Tanvir was raised <strong>in</strong> Karachi, <strong>the</strong> largest city and <strong>the</strong> f<strong>in</strong>ancial capital <strong>of</strong><br />
Pakistan and moved to Pakistan’s second largest city, Lahore, <strong>in</strong> 2001<br />
where she still resides. She has been <strong>in</strong>terested <strong>in</strong> art s<strong>in</strong>ce childhood and<br />
says that her parents have always encouraged her artistic endeavors and<br />
“have been my best critics.”<br />
In December <strong>of</strong> 2004, Tanvir received a BFA from Pakistan’s most<br />
prestigious art school, National College <strong>of</strong> Arts, <strong>in</strong> Lahore. As for her path<br />
towards becom<strong>in</strong>g a Fulbright Scholar, Tanvir began work<strong>in</strong>g as a teach<strong>in</strong>g<br />
assistant soon after receiv<strong>in</strong>g her Bachelor’s degree but ultimately felt <strong>the</strong><br />
need to pursue her Master’s.<br />
“After two years <strong>of</strong> work<strong>in</strong>g, I applied for a Fulbright scholarship and was<br />
lucky to receive this award for my MFA for <strong>the</strong> academic years <strong>of</strong> 2007 –<br />
2009,” says Tanvir. “I had applied to <strong>the</strong> Art Institute <strong>of</strong> Chicago and San<br />
Francisco Institute <strong>of</strong> Art. I did hear back from Art Institute <strong>of</strong> Chicago, but<br />
I wanted to go to a school where I could experience more <strong>of</strong> a traditional<br />
pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g environment which became a reason that I chose PAFA.”<br />
At PAFA, Tanvir has been work<strong>in</strong>g on both pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g and photography<br />
and is benefit<strong>in</strong>g greatly from <strong>the</strong> faculty, comment<strong>in</strong>g, “I th<strong>in</strong>k PAFA has a<br />
nice group <strong>of</strong> critics whom I f<strong>in</strong>d equally encourag<strong>in</strong>g for both my mediums.”<br />
After <strong>the</strong> Annual Student Exhibition and graduation, Tanvir plans entail<br />
return<strong>in</strong>g to Pakistan <strong>in</strong> June to teach and work as an <strong>in</strong>dependent artist.<br />
