BALINIT ®
guarantees superb results
in punching and forming
The success formula for efficiency
in punching and forming
BALINIT ® hard coatings are only a few
thousandths of a millimetre thick, but
harder than steel and chemically inert.
That’s why they sustainably reduce tool
wear, cold welding and friction. More
and more companies rely on BALINIT ®
in their punching and forming operations
to boost productivity and quality.
02
Lower costs
- due to less tool wear
- reduced lubricant consumption
- fewer tool failures
- calculable tool changes
The result: you cut manufacturing
costs across the board.
Greater productivity
- due to substantially longer lives
- higher cycle frequencies
- reduced machine idle time
- less workpiece finishing effort
The result: you can punch, form and
fine-blank with greater cost-effectiveness.
BALINIT ® hard coatings developed by Oerlikon Balzers are applied in vacuum processes at temperatures between
200 and 500 °C. They considerably increase surface hardness and feature exceptional wear resistance and good
sliding properties. Even after coating, tools fulfil all requirements relative to dimensional accuracy and edge sharpness.
Higher quality
- due to smoother surfaces
- better dimensional stability
- higher degrees of metal deformation
- fewer manufacturing steps
The result: you can establish higher
standards in manufacturing.
Less environmental impact
- due to the use of environmentally
friendlier lubricants
- reduced lubricant consumption or
even dry machining
The result: you conserve resources
and spend less on consumables.
You cut costs across the board
Less is more – particularly in the context
of tool wear. Here, the remarkable
hardness of BALINIT ® coatings makes
a tangible contribution to cost savings
in several respects.
Cost factor: wear
BALINIT ® protects the functional surfaces,
cutting edges and drawing radii
of punching and forming tools against
abrasive wear. Thus, tools coated by
Oerlikon Balzers can produce a multiple
of workpieces without annoying
burrs and grooves before the tool
must be reground or repolished. Other
advantages: less material removal in
the regrinding process and a longer
useful life.
Cost factor: longevity
BALINIT ® coatings prevent adhesion
and cold welding. Because of the
reduced friction, the tool surfaces are
exposed to less thermal stress, which
prevents crack-inducing surface fatigue.
The result: BALINIT ® -coated
tools have clearly longer service lives.
Cost factor: tool failure
Depending on the tool load and the
number of load changes, tools can fail
prematurely due to material fatigue.
Experience shows that BALINIT ® -coated
tools are exposed to less stress
because of the lower coefficient of
friction and reduced susceptibility to
cold welding. Your benefit: less scrap
and machine downtime.
Savings in % 46
In the production of hinges for Volvo tailgates, unit
costs were reduced by 46 % as a result of higher cycle
frequencies, the elimination of tool changes and
subsequent machining, and the longer life of BALINIT ® -
coated tools.
Cost factor: lubricants
Conventional punching and forming
presses consume large amounts of
lubricant. In many cases, low-friction
BALINIT ® coatings reduce the amount
of lubricant needed. Under certain circumstances,
they even allow a switch
to dry processes. Whatever the case
may be: you will see a substantial reduction
in lubricant costs.
Cost factor: quality
BALINIT ® -coated tools prevent cold
welding and fretting, which noticeably
improves the surface quality of the
workpieces. In the real world, this
means a significant reduction of scrap
and subsequent machining effort.
03
You save even more in production
With its positive coating properties
and the high coating quality, BALINIT ®
boosts productivity in punching and
forming.
Productivity factor: service life
The extreme hardness of the BALINIT ®
coating effectively protects tools
against abrasive wear and prevents
dimensional changes of the functional
surfaces. Moreover, coated punches
can be reground more frequently due
to less flank wear and are therefore
reusable for a longer period
of time.
Productivity factor:
cycle frequencies
BALINIT ® -coated tools are more resistant
to wear and cold welding. Users
benefit from these coating properties
and operate their machines at higher
stroke rates. The result: improved yield,
greater productivity.
Productivity factor:
capacity utilisation
Tools have a decisive impact on the
economics of punching and forming.
BALINIT ® increases performance and
production safety and thus reduces
the downtime of manufacturing equipment.
04
Productivity factor:
forming process
The high wear resistance and good
sliding properties of BALINIT ® coatings
have a beneficial effect on the forming
process. Further advantages: higher
dimensional accuracy across a longer
tool life, fewer drawing stages, readyto-install
workpieces with minimal
subsequent machining.
You can establish higher manufacturing standards
BALINIT ® -coated tools stay in shape
longer and produce top-notch workpieces
– with finer surfaces and
cut edges.
Quality factor: surface
The forming process produces high
surface loads and friction-induced
heat build-up. This has a negative impact
on the effectiveness of lubricants.
Microwelds can occur and in turn
produce grooves and rough cuts. The
tool has to be prematurely remachined
or replaced.
A BALINIT ® coating perceptibly increases
surface and cut qualities. This
is important particularly for workpieces
that need to look perfect.
BALINIT ® -coated tools make it possible
to produce workpieces with tighter
manufacturing tolerances and improved
dimensional accuracy. Depending on
requirements, the result is ready-toinstall
workpieces or components that
need only very little finishing work.
Quality factor: cleanliness
BALINIT ® cuts lubricant consumption
so that the workpiece cleaning effort
is considerably reduced. Cleaning can
even be eliminated entirely in dry processes
– a must in production for food
and pharmaceutical applications.
BALINIT ®
BALINIT ® -coated tools are environmentally
friendly: because they will run
with smaller amounts of less problematic
lubricants and help conserve
resources.
Ecology factor:
lubricant metering
BALINIT ® assures the reliable separation
of workpiece and tool. Even
under adverse lubrication conditions,
the result is a safe and defined set of
operating parameters. The options for
environmentally friendlier production
range from smaller lubricant quantities
to dry production.
Ecology factor: lubricant choice
When BALINIT ® -coated tools are
deployed, you can work with ecologically
safer lubricants. This not only
reduces the effort and cost involved
in reconditioning but also makes your
eco-balance look good.
Ecology factor: resources
BALINIT ® boosts the life of your tools
by several orders of magnitude. At
the same time, less scrap is produced
with coated tools. This sustainably cuts
consumption of valuable resources.
