Voter turnout high in Calhoun County
By Ken Ross
Graphic-Advocate Editor
Among the 7,182 registered
voters in Calhoun County, 5,259
votes were cast. This is a 73.22
percent turnout.
“That was a very high turnout,”
said Judy Howrey, county auditor
and commissioner of elections.
She noted last week that the vote
totals would not be offi cial until
canvassed by the county board
of supervisors on Nov. 13. The
unoffi cial totals are not expected to
change much but there were still a
few uncounted absentee ballots and
provisional ballots at the time the
unoffi cial numbers were released.
In the presidential election
unoffi cial county results, a majority
voted for Republican candidate Mitt
Romney (2,890 - 55.11 percent)
over incumbent Democrat Barack
Obama (2,232 – 42.75) although
Obama won the majority in the
Iowa total and the national popular
vote total and electoral college vote
total.
Other presidential candidates
receiving votes in the county include
Gary Johnson of the Libertarian
Party – 39; Virgil Goode of the
Constitution Party – 16; Jill Stein of
the Green Party – 11; James Harris
of the Socialist Workers Party - 1;
Jerry Litzel who was nominated
by petition -1; and 31 write-ins for
others.
Steve King, Republican, won
election to his sixth term in the
U.S. House of Representatives over
challenger Christie Vilsack. King
received a majority of the votes in
the district as well as a majority
of votes in Calhoun County: 2,841
– 55.11 percent to Vilsack’s 2.175
– 42.19 percent. Also on the ballot
for that congressional seat was
Martin James Monroe, nominated
by petition, who received 137 votes
in Calhoun County.
As a result of redistricting
following the 2010 census, Iowa will
go from fi ve to four Congressional
districts as of January 1. The
current 4 th Congressional District,
of which Calhoun County is a part,
is represented by Tom Latham
who lived in the newly formed 4 th
district until he moved to the 3 rd
Congressional District in order not
to compete with Steve King, who
currently represents Congressional
District 5 but whose home is also in
the newly formed 4 th district.
Latham faced incumbent
Democrat Leonard Boswell in
District 3 and Latham won that
election.
Republican State Representative
Tom Shaw was unopposed on the
ballot for Iowa House District 10
and received 3,747 votes in Calhoun
County with 79 write-ins.
Four county elected offi ces
were on the ballot with all four
incumbents in these offi ces running
unopposed. These are Dean. G.
Hoag, Sr. (Dem) – Board of Sup.
Dist. 1; Gary Nicholson (Rep) -
Board of Sup. Dist. 3; Judy Howrey
(Rep) – Auditor and William Davis
(Dem) – Sheriff.
There was a scattering of writeins
for each of the county offi ces
with all of the incumbents receiving
more than 95 percent of the vote.
In Township Trustee and
Township Clerk votes, there were
no more names on the ballots than
openings and in the cases of Lake
Creek Township Trustee and Logan
Township Trustee, there were not
enough names for the seats to be
fi lled so the vote goes to a write in if
willing and qualifi ed as a resident.
Also the Soil and Water
Conservation District 3 Board
only had two candidates for three
positions, so the third will also be
fi lled by write-in.
The only local offi ce election
with more candidates on the ballot
than seats was for the County
Ag Extension Council, with fi ve
candidates competing for four
seats and all fi ve coming in close.
The four winners of that vote were
Michelle Dischler, Darcy Murley,
Randy Souder and William Tom
McClue.
A vote was held in Somers to fi ll
a vacancy on the city council with
Helen Schroeder unchallenged on
the ballot.
Two candidates were on the
ballot to fi ll two vacancies on the
city council in Yetter. They were
Rodney Hart and Mark Lietz.
Judges on the ballot were all
approved to retain offi ce by a
majority of the voters in Calhoun
County and a majority of Iowa
voters.
Family and friends gathered at
the Shady Oaks Care Center to
celebrate the birthday of perhaps the
oldest person in Calhoun County.
Bessie Hendricks actually turned
105 on Nov. 7, but the celebration
was held Sunday so more people
could attend.
“I really feel pretty good,” Bessie
told well wishers at her celebration.
Her children, who organized the
event, confi rmed that their mother is
a bit forgetful at times but otherwise
has a sharp mind and is generally in
good spirits.
She recently participated in the
presidential election, something she
has done since becoming legal age to
vote. Women couldn’t vote in most
states, including Iowa, when Bessie
Sharky was born in 1907. The 19 th
Amendment to the Constitution,
granting women the right to vote,
“It’s a right and
responsibility to vote,”
she said.
Bessie was born on
a farm just a few miles
from Lake City where
she grew up and attended
a country school just
across the road from
her. She attended high
school in Lake City
where she took a Normal
School program of study
to qualify her to teach
grammar school.
After graduation from
high school, she taught
at the same grammar
school she had attended.
She taught four years
before marrying Paul
Hendricks. They lived
SCC enrollment down 25 students
By Ken Ross
Graphic-Advocate Editor
The combined enrollment in
the South Central Calhoun school
system had a net loss of 25 students
after the offi cial student count
according to Supt. Jeff Kruse.
The student enrollment was up
by 5 students in the Rockwell City/
Lytton District and down by 30
students in the Southern Cal District.
The current year count for the
whole-grade sharing partners is
472 for RCL and 469 for SC. The
count effects the per-pupil funding
set by the state to be raised through
a combination of local property tax
City and raised
fi ve children.
They retired
from farming
in 1979 and
moved to Lake
City.
T h e y
and state aid.
Kruse said that the state has not yet
set the percent change in the funding
formula for the next fi scal year, an
amount referred to as allowable
growth.
It is not known whether the
allowable growth will be enough to
make up for the lost revenue from
the enrollment decline, but Kruse
warned that there will be little or
no extra funding the next year as
a result of allowable growth, and
possibly some decline.
Quilts on display
The Quilting Group of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Rockwell City have their quilts displayed on the pews, as they do each fall.
The volunteers meet two times per month and make 200-300 tied quilts a year. These quilts are given to nursing homes in the area,
families who are in need, homeless shelters and any other worthy cause. At graduation time, they also give a personalized quilt
to each of the graduating seniors who is a member of St. Paul’s. In the spring, the rest are boxed up for Lutheran World Relief and
shipped to various places overseas. Any suitable material is cut up and used in the quilts. The quilting group has appreciated all
the various materials given to them by people in the community. (Graphic-Advocate photo by Ken Ross)
attendance were (seated) Glenda, (standing) Shirley, Leon and Joan. Another
son, Roland, passed away in 2011. (Graphic-Advocate photo by Ken Ross)
A required step was taken Nov.
5 toward holding a referendum
in February to consolidate the
Southern Cal and Rockwell City/
Lytton districts as of July 2014.
T h e
board of
directors of
the Prairie
Lakes Area
Education
Agency
held a
public hearing at the middle school
in Rockwell City on the evening of
Nov. 5 to consider the petition by
citizens to hold a consolidation vote.
At this point, the AEA has control
of the process. The SC and RCL
Boards will take no offi cial action
regarding the vote except passing an
anticipated resolution of support for
the consolidation of the districts into
one district to be named the South
Central Calhoun District.
The two districts are already
whole-grade sharing all grades
K-12, separately operating only
preschool classes.
All high school students in the
two districts attend high school in
Lake City, all elementary students
grades K-3 attend the elementary
school in Rockwell City and all
students in grades 4-8 attend school
at the middle school building in
Rockwell City, with the grade 4
students in a self-contained unit that
operates more from the elementary
school model than the middle school
model.
“The two districts are already
quite integrated in the whole
grade sharing concept,” Derrick
Rick Franck, an attorney for the
petitioners, told the AEA Board
members at the hearing.
Franck described the nature of
the districts as well as the steps
taken toward the anticipated sharing
agreement.
“The sense of community that
Schaffer, Glenda Hendricks, and
Leon (Judy) Hendricks, all live in
the Lake City area. One son, Roland
“Ron” Hendricks, passed away in
2011. He had lived in Rockwell City.
Bessie has numerous
grandchildren, great-grandchildren
and great-great-grandchildren.
No objections made at
reorganization hearing
has been developed by these two
districts is evidenced by the fact that
there were no objections fi led to this
petition,” Franck said.
He noted that the combined
population of the two districts is
6,276, with the division of population
almost equal
between the
two. The
combined
assessed
valuation is
over $390
million.
“Clearly the proposed district
would be in the top quarter of
the districts in your AEA, and
would be viable for many years to
come,” Franck said. He pointed
out that sharing has allowed the
elementary school to add a reading
recovery teacher, and an elementary
technology instructor and has
also allowed smaller class sizes.
Middle school added an after school
program for students struggling
ion core subject areas. In the high
school, sharing has allowed each
teacher to teach fewer different
subjects.
“We’ve already gained some
enhanced effi ciencies through
sharing. Reorganization will bring
long term stability to that existing
relationship. In addition, going to
one school board, one audit, one
set of tax levies and one budget will
enable us to get additional long term
effi ciencies,” Franck said
He also noted that the shared
districts have had impressive shared
extracurricular achievements,
heightening the sense of community.
Shared Superintendent Jeff Kruse,
said to the AEA board that the SC
and RCL school boards have already
been working as one unifi ed group.
“We are excited about the
opportunity of becoming the South
Central Calhoun School District and
are looking forward to bigger and
better things than what Rick already
alluded to,” Kruse said.
“The two districts are
already quite integrated in the
whole grade sharing concept,”
Derrick Rick Franck told the AEA Board
members at the hearing.

NOVEMBER 14, 2012
With my last name of Swarm,
as you might expect, I’m used
to a lot of references to bees.
Growing up, I was known
as Bee Swarm, or just plain
Bee. When my parents
had their 50 th wedding
anniversary, with all the
kids, grandkids, and great
grandkids in attendance,
their cake said, “50 Years
of Making Honey.” When
I tell someone my name,
especially over the phone,
and they say, “Huh?” I just
say, “Swarm, as in swarm of
bees.” “Oh.”
So, it wasn’t all that
surprising when I got a
phone call from a farmer
over by New London telling me that
he had the strangest bee hive, and
that I just had to see it. (Plus, I have
a byline at the end of my weekly
column, asking for stories.) On a
beautiful fall day, I ventured over
New London way, and woke the
farmer from his afternoon nap. On
the way to the bee hive in his fourwheeler,
the farmer explained that
he’s 83 years old and has never seen
a bee hive like this one.
When we arrived, I had to agree.
I have never seen anything like this.
As the farmer described it, the hive
is about the size of a bushel basket,
and looks like elephant ears layered
together, exposed to the elements.
Here it is fall, the nights are colder,
and the bees are busy working on
the hive like everything is normal.
(Busy as a bee.) How the bees ever
expect to last through the winter, is a
question both the farmer and I have.
I snapped some pictures.
The next day, I took the pictures
into the county extension office and
they said, “Da.”
I remembered an old buddy who
is an apiarist. For those of you who
don’t know what an apiarist is (I had
to look it up), an apiarist is a bee
keeper. My friend just goes by the
name of “Buzz.” Buzz took one look
at the pictures, snorted, and said,
“It’s going to be a warm winter.”
In response to my questioning
look, Buzz scratched his whiskery
jaw and said, “I’ve had bees do that,
nest outside of a shelter, like a tree
trunk, or box. When they do that,
it’s because they “think” it’s going
to be a warm winter. With the drouth
we’ve had, they’re probably right.
It’s going to be a warm, dry winter.”
Buzz rubbed his shoulders, and said,
“Good.”
I asked him about the yellow
stripes on the bees’
of the average honey
bee. “Russian bees,”
he snorted again.
on Buzz: a few years
ago, when the alarm
went out that honey
bees were disappearing
from the wild, and we
depend on bees for pollination, I
queried Buzz for an explanation as
to their disappearance.
“Cell phone towers,” he snapped.
“The bees are getting zapped in mid
air.”
I went home and Googled “Bee
Hives.” Sure ‘nuff, a picture of a
nest popped up that looked just like
the nest on the New London farm.
The caption under the picture read,
“Hawaii.”
Another government
conspiracy?
Public officials and pundits
have been working themselves
into a frenzy about the possibility
of our nation plunging over a
‘fiscal cliff’ if tax increases and
spending cuts are not prevented. The
austerity measures go into effect
automatically on January 1, unless
congress passes deficit reduction
legislation and the president doesn’t
veto that legislation.
Some media-identified economic
experts give specific numbers of
workers who would lose jobs as a
result of the recession resulting from
going over the cliff.
The certainty about the impact
of the austerity measures lacks
supporting empirical evidence.
No one can reliably predict how
such policy decisions will affect
employment rates.
On the revenue side of the austerity
measures, taxes go up for everybody
in all tax brackets. This includes
payroll taxes as well as income tax.
Spending cuts include a 9 percent
reduction in defense spending, a cut
in payment to Medicare providers
that would possibly reduce the
number of providers participating
in the program, an end to the longterm
extension of unemployment
benefits and cuts in farm price
supports, student loans, vocational
rehabilitation, mineral leasing
payments, the Social Services Block
Grant, and some smaller programs.
Most Republicans want to avoid
any kind of tax increase and the
Democrats want to only increase
taxes on those earning over $250,000
a year. Republicans also generally
do not support reducing defense
spending.
Democrats generally do not
support reductions in entitlements,
particularly those that affect lower
to middle income constituents.
Republicans claim tax increases
suppress economic growth,
especially taxes on the top income
tax earners. This is based on intuitive
assumptions, not by historical data.
in the 20 th century in which the tax
rate on the top earners could be
called confiscatory, there were ups
and downs in unemployment but
mostly there was far better economic
growth than in the past decade.
This is not to advocate a return to
the 90 plus percent tax on the highest
earnings that we once had, but the
tax-cut-equals-job-growth axiom
and the tax-hike-equals-layoffs
corollary are not based on evidence.
The Democrats do not accept the
Republican assumptions regarding
taxation, at least not in isolation from
other factors. However, the universal
orthodoxy espoused by those giving
legitimacy to the term ‘fiscal cliff’ is
that the combination of tax increases
and spending cuts will take enough
money out of the economy to push
an anemic economy over a cliff into
a deeper recession.
No one can confidently deny
the possibility of a downward
employment spike as a result of
simultaneous tax increases and
spending cuts but isn’t that precisely
the Democrats’ proposal on how
to reduce deficits - a combination
of reduced spending and increased
revenue?
The Republicans’ idea that
military spending should be an
area exempt from cuts makes no
sense either economically or as
a reasonable expectation of the
role of one nation in maintaining
world security. According to the
International Institute for Strategic
Studies in a March 2012 report, the
$738.7 billion annual U.S. defense
budget dwarfs that of all other
countries. The next nine countries
in the top 10 military budgets range
from $89.8 billion to $36.6 billion.
How can we expect to compete
economically in the world when we
accept that kind of burden?
The successful campaign by Tom
Latham for the 3 rd U.S. Congressional
seat from Iowa repetitively played
a TV spot in which Latham’s
opponent, Leonard Boswell, stated
that the gas tax should be increased.
Boswell was portrayed as out of
touch with the public for proposing
to increase the cost of gas when it
was already at record levels.
Regardless of what the cost of
gas is, the way government pays for
roads and bridges is by a gas tax.
This is basically a user fee, similar
to how services are paid for in the
private sector. The increasing use of
hybrid and electric vehicles might
require an additional road use tax
source in the future, but that’s beside
the point being made here and beside
what Latham was criticizing.
I doubt that Latham’s position had
anything to do with his assessment of
the adequacy of the revenue source
for roads and bridges but rather
reflected political opportunism by
portraying his opponent as wanting
“even higher gas prices.”
Political opportunism may also
be a factor in preventing any kind
of deal to prevent going over the
fiscal cliff. In fact that might have
been the intent of creating automatic
austerity measures in the first place,
to allow austerity measures to go
into effect while both Democrats and
Republicans tell constituents that
they oppose the specific elements of
the plan that their core constituency
opposes.
For those who doubt that national
political leaders would participate in
such a cynical exercise in political
manipulation, consider The Federal
Reserve Transparency Act of 2012.
The U.S. House of Representatives
approved the bill by a vote of 327 to
98.
The bill, otherwise known as the
“Audit the Fed Bill,” calls for the
Government Accountability Office
to conduct a thorough audit of an
institution about which Senator
Harry Reid once said, “There is no
entity in the world that controls our
lives more.”
The bill was not brought to the
Senate and there was no protest that
the bill died. The representatives
who voted for it knew that it would
never actually be voted on in the
Senate and that the Fed would never
be audited. Certainly the media
never attempted to raise public
awareness regarding the issue.
As far as the ‘fiscal cliff’ rhetoric,
the media seems content in playing
a lap dog role in promoting the
accepted narrative about the event.
Stewart Memorial Community
Hospital (SMCH) is constantly
seeking to improve processes and
outcomes for patients. In its quest
to become the “best rural hospital
in the nation” it has partnered
with the Hospital Engagement
Network (HEN) to seek out areas of
improvement and ways to measure
those areas. Recently, Karilynne
Reorganizaiton Notice of School District
City of Lake City
November 5, 2012
The City Council of Lake City, Iowa met in
regular session on Monday, November 5, 2012
at 6:30 P.M. in the Council Chambers. Mayor
Fahan presided with the following members
present: Ringgenberg, Green, Kramer* and
Bellinghausen; absent - Himes. Department
heads/staff present: Jim Janssen, Melvin Alcox.
Pledge of Allegiance was recited.
Motion by Bellinghausen, second by Green,
to approve the consent agenda consisting of the
agenda, October 15 th minutes, and summary of
claims, unanimous.
Administrator reported in preparation of
a potential housing rehabilitation program,
requests for proposals for technical services
had been solicited through advertisement and
direct mailing to thirteen potential contractors,
with only one proposal received from MIDAS
Council of Governments. Motion by Green,
second by Ringgenberg, approving MIDAS’
proposal contingent upon receipt of grant
funds and authorization from Iowa Economic
Development Authority, unanimous.
Presented for council consideration was
a Building Permit for Andrew Winter/Nicholle
Miller, 821 S. Woodlawn (small shed and trailer
for storage). After review and discussion, a
motion was made by Ringgenberg, second
by Bellinghausen, to approve the permit
contingent upon the trailer being altered to a
resemble a shed (painted to match the house
as proposed, any advertising removed, placed
on a foundation), and subject to City Code and
Zoning requirements. Unanimous.
(*Kramer arrived.) Administrator reported
Iowa Economic Development Authority declined
the City’s request for CDBG imminent threat
funds to drill a new well, since the City has a
well that is meeting the community’s daily usage
needs. After much discussion on re-casing vs
drilling, motion by Ringgenberg, second by
Green, to proceed with drilling of a new well due
to concerns with longevity of re-casing based
on current well condition and having to go to a
submersible pump due to the reduced well size;
and to proceed on a normal design/construction
schedule, to help keep costs down, unanimous.
Various financing scenarios were reviewed and
discussed. Administrator will contact FOX to
get design work started, Iowa Finance Authority
to obtain information on the Drinking Water
State Revolving Fund program, and Ruan
Securities for further information and financing
options now that estimated construction costs
are available. In addition administrator will
research generator availability for the north
well, if needed.
There being no further business, a
motion was made by Kramer and seconded
by Bellinghausen to adjourn at 7:16 PM,
unanimous.
Notice from Juvenile Division
City of Rockwell City
November 5, 2012
Mayor Heinlen called the meeting to order
with the following members present: Lange,
Hepp, Walters, Dawson and Hendricks.
Motion by Hendricks, second by Dawson,
approving the agenda; unanimous.
Motion made by Lange, second by Hepp to
approve the consent agenda of the October
15 meeting minutes and bills as submitted;
unanimous.
Warden Smith asked the council to
reconsider raising their water and sewer rates.
He discussed a contract NCCF has with the
City and would like to meet to discuss further.
Mary Warner asked the council to consider
forgiving excess sewer at Golden Buckle
Apartments back to 2003. She stated that a
leak was found that was going into the ground
and that the bill had dropped considerably. The
council voiced concern as to how to determine
how long there had actually been a leak. They
asked Mary to gather some facts and return to
the next meeting.
Clerk Smidt told the council that a resident
requested that a siren be placed by Sunnyview
so that occupants could hear it indoors. The
council stated that sirens are an outdoor
warning system. They recommended that
concerned residents sign up for Delt Alert by
calling the Department of Public Health.
FY2014 Airport Capital Improvement Project
data sheets were presented to the council. The
council asked the clerk to confirm funding and
requirements of land purchase. After council
concerns are met, the engineer will asked
to submit data sheets for the November 16
deadline.
Motion made by Hendricks, second by
Dawson, approving the second reading of
An Ordinance Amending the Sewer Rates for
Rockwell City, Iowa; setting the rates at $8.50
and final reading will be held at the November
additional usage and also to raise sewer
$.25/gallon each of the next four years, with
review. Ayes- Lange, Hepp, Walters, Dawson
and Hendricks. Nays – none. The third and
final reading will be held at the November 19
meeting. The utility committee will meet with
NCCF officials before the next meeting to
discuss rate increases further.
Discussion on allowing horses at 444 N.
1 st Street was tabled as owners of the property
were not in attendance.
Discussion on the US Cellular antenna and
building agreement was tabled.
The council discussed how to deal with
concerns at Humpty Dumpty Park. After much
discussion on the high cost associated with
repairing the park and the fact that the school
now has a playground nearby, they will consider
selling all equipment at auction and want the
clerk to check on the process to dispose of the
property.
The council discussed details for the 407
Court Street project.
The Mayor voiced concern about the Walk
Park and pond. He had a resident complain
that flour bags were scattered throughout the
park and wondered who would be responsible
to clean the park. The council asked to have
NCCF offenders walk thru to remove the bags.
The Mayor requested that the Clerk check on
progress of the pond project.
The council read a letter from the owner
of 105 6 th Street requesting that the council
reconsider sharing in the cost of running a
sewer line to Pleasant Street. The council
decided to stay with their initial motion.
Motion by Lange, second by Hepp to allow
Here’s How It Works:
Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes.
To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fi ll each row, column
and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box.
You can fi gure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the
numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name,
the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!
This week’s sponsor:
SUNNYVIEW
Sunnyview was the place to be
on Election Day. “On Nov. 6 th ,
Clarice Martz, vice-president, and
Jo Fickbohm, president, hosted a
salad supper and presidential debate.
Twenty-two residents attended and
brought a wide assortment of salads.
We ate around 5:30 p.m. and shortly
afterwards the debate started. Dick
Hildreth represented ‘Obama’ and
Pat Hobart portrayed ‘Romney.’
They were such good sports and
very entertaining. They were each
given three questions earlier in the
week that each got to answer fi rst
and then the opponent was offered
an opportunity to argue his opinion.
We tried to avoid anything political
but wanted to show the competitive
spirit of each candidate. The six
questions consisted of things such as
‘How important is the new Highway
20?’ ‘Which is the best truck, a Ford
or a Chevy?’ ‘Which do you think is
most important for the future, wind
power or coal?’ etc.
Both men did an excellent job of
offering their views and even though
they did not object to their opponents
answer, they each had to argue with a
different opinion or response. Mostly
this was to show that debates can be
misleading or silly and certainly a
waste of a lot of money. We had a
few hilarious moments especially
when one candidate forgot how he
had answered the question earlier in
the week and he offered a different
opinion and got accused of fl ipfl
opping with his answers. Thank
you so much, Pat and Dick, for your
participation. Also thank you to
those helping with the clean-up and
to the women who brought so many
nice salads.” Jo Fickbohn, president.
Congratulations to the Sunnyview
jig saw puzzle team! The puzzles
in play most recently have been
“smaller” 500 piece country
landscapes. But before that, on the
table in the Bird Room, a lovely
1000 piece landscape puzzle of
fl owers and a mountain was fi nally
fi nished. How long did that one take
to complete? We heard estimates
ranging from two weeks to four
weeks or more. Several residents
participated during that time.
Regarding these residents -- words
like diligent, tenacious, determined
and perseverant come to mind.
Also in the bird room, two gray &
white baby birds appeared recently
in the aviary. At fi rst, they liked to
huddle under the back rim of the
feed bowl. It didn’t take long for
them to learn how to fl y up to the
branches with the other birds. They
were so cute when they were little,
and they “grow up” so fast (where
have we heard that line before?).
Many people around here have
friends and loved ones who were
affected by hurricane Sandy. We
feel for the all people who live on
the east coast. We hope that winter
weather will hold off for a while,
especially for them.
Due to pagination problems for
the Nov. 7 edition the Sunnyview
News did not appear in that
issue. Here is that information.
We apologize that some of the
information is no longer timely.
Thank you to Jo Fickbohm for this
report. “On Oct. 29 th , hall 8 hosted
a fun and games party in the dining
room. Thirty-fi ve residents attended.
JoAnn and Delmar Maguire with the
help of Ella Webb did a fi ne job of
entertaining us. Mavis Baird helped
with planning but was not able to
attend the night of the party.
Residents were divided into three
different teams. We then played
several games in competition
between the teams. One game called
“Do You Know Who” involved
answering fi fteen questions such as
“Who wears a size 9EEE shoe?”
“Who has on two different earrings?”
and “Who sings in the choir?” It
kept the residents busy asking and
seeking for answers amongst each
other. Team 2, including residents
from halls 1, 3 and 5, won this
challenge.
The bean bag toss was won by
team 3 which consisted of residents
from halls 2, 3 and 6. George
Wilson was really sharp and got all
4 bean bags into the holes. Most
others weren’t so talented. We
were handed a sheet of paper called
“Brain Waves” which consists of 14
different word puzzles which took
plenty of brain power to make any
sense of, for instance the letters “the
ears wet” which really meant, “wet
behind the ears.” Cute, but tough!!!
Team 3 had to show off and win this
exercise also.
Next, each team had a few
minutes to walk around a table with
60 items placed on it and then they
were to go back to their group and
write down as many of the items as
they could remember. Team one
which consisted of halls 4 and 7 did
very well with this exercise. Witches
brew and homemade cookies were
served for a snack. Thanks to hall
8 for planning this very fun night
of entertainment. Thanks also to
everyone who helped serve and
clean up.
On Tuesday, Oct. 30 th , sixteen
Remember the up-coming
Veteran’s Day program in Rockwell
City at the SCC Middle School
on Friday, Nov. 9 at 10:30 a.m.
Although the event did not make
it onto the printed 2012-2013 RC
Rotary Community calendar, it is
online at the SCC school website.
It was an exceptional Veteran’s Day
program last year, and in previous
years at the Rockwell City/Lytton
Middle School. If you are a veteran
planning to attend, please stop at the
veteran’s “sign-in” table when you
arrive.
SHADY OAKS
From left to right - Marjorie Walters, Freda Toyne, Florence
ceramic pumpkins.
Shady Oaks residents recently
enjoyed an afternoon-long visit
to ‘Ceramics and Crafts,’ located
southeast of Rockwell City.
Residents each painted a ceramic
Jack-o-Lantern for Halloween as
well as took a tour during their
time at the studio. Diane Vavak ,
owner, is the daughter of resident
Darlene Orhtman. Resident Shirley
Winter commented, “This is a great
place to see! How does she (Diane)
have time and energy for all of this?”
Another resident, Lavon McCarty
noted, “I’m so glad they convinced
me to go on this trip! I really had a
good time.” It was fun to see all of
the talents that Diane has… from
ceramics, to quilting and sewing,
scrapbooking, jewelry making, cake
decorating, knitting and crocheting.
She owns over 35,0000 molds for
ceramics alone! Thank you to Diane
and her helper Bonnie Luethje, for
taking the time us with at your studio
and making the afternoon a great
outing.
is. Also would like to thank Weston
and sharing all of Mary’s wonderful
artwork with us. We had a great
time! I would like to thank all of my
What a week it was. The Auction
crowd. Some came to bid and others
came for nostalgic reasons and others
to shed a few tears at the closing of
a beautiful school where they and
their children and grandchildren
graduated. It was a sad day for many.
