Of the many places identified, the following merit special protection, having exceptional aesthetic,<br />

natural or cultural value and therefore should receive first priority.<br />

The altiplane <strong>of</strong> Lassithi<br />

An impressive agricultural landscape on Crete island. It is 4500 ha fertile plain situated at an altitude <strong>of</strong><br />

850 m above sea level. Traditional agriculture based on diverse local germplasm is practiced in a<br />

spectacular landscape <strong>of</strong> 1200 wind mills used to pump irrigation water for the crops. The area is mainly<br />

devoted to potato cultivation, but many other crops, i.e vegetables, cereals, are also grown.<br />

The altiplane <strong>of</strong> Englouvi, in Lefkas island <strong>of</strong> the Ionian see.<br />

It is a 300 Ha fertile plain cultivated with traditional cereal (wheat, barley,rye ) and legume (principally<br />

lentil) landraces. Agriculture is practiced under harsh traditional labor intensive conditions.
