Message from Harvesters
Dear Friends,
As we refl ect on the past year, it is humbling to see how many individuals,
organizations, foundations and corporations donated food, money and time
in support of Harvesters’ mission. The community once again stepped up to
ensure that Harvesters had the resources needed to assist those turning to us for
emergency food assistance.
The scope of the problem of hunger in our community can at times seem
overwhelming. Nearly 60,000 people turn to Harvesters’ network for assistance
every week. Thousands of children rely on Harvesters for food every single day.
The food bank needs nearly two million pounds of food a month to meet the
need.
With a problem of this magnitude, how can one person make a difference?
The late Dan Quisenberry, relief pitcher for the 1985 World Champion Kansas
City Royals and a long-time supporter of Harvesters, may have said it best
when he said, “I can’t save the world, but at least I can feed my neighbor.”
And that’s really what it comes down to, doesn’t it? Taking the initiative to
help, one person at a time. Every donation – from the dollar bill given in the
grocery store check-out line during the holidays to the can of soup given by an
elementary school student as part of the Go for the Green Food Drive to the
afternoon given to help sort food in the Volunteer Outreach Center – enables
Harvesters to provide a nutritious meal to a person who might otherwise go to
bed hungry. To that one person, your donation means everything.
The gifts of food, money and time, no matter how small, add up. Taken
together, we have a hunger relief response in Greater Kansas City that makes
a huge impact for nearly 60,000 people each week. Thank you for taking the
initiative to make a difference in the lives of our hungry neighbors in need. Karen Haren
