Annual Pilgrimage for the Sea Services<br />

October 4, 2009<br />

Members of the U.S. Navy, U.S. Marine Corps, U.S. Coast Guard, the U.S.<br />

Merchant Marine, and the public will come together on Sunday, October 4, to<br />

honor Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton, “Patroness of the Sea Services.” The Annual<br />

Pilgrimage for the Sea Services is hosted by the Daughters of Charity, and<br />

supported by a committee of retired Naval Officers and their spouses, chaired<br />

by Admiral James D. Watkins, USN (Ret). The Mass begins at 3:00 p.m. in the<br />

Basilica at the National Shrine of Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton, 333 South Seton<br />

Avenue, Emmitsburg. The public is invited to attend. The Seton Shrine will be<br />

open between 10:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. for tours.<br />

food, entertainment<br />

and games. The<br />

Chief’s famous fries<br />

were unforgetable.<br />

Betty Ann Mumma<br />

said that this year<br />

they cooked up 750<br />

lbs of chicken for the<br />

chicken corn soup,<br />

spent once a week for<br />

three months slicing<br />

ham for the fried<br />

ham sandwiches,<br />

made 288 pies and<br />

20 cream pies at<br />

the firehall. She<br />

gives all the credit<br />

to the community.<br />

“Without their help,<br />

this wouldn’t happen”<br />

Betty said.<br />

The Thurmont Lions Club is accepting nominations for this year’s<br />

Volunteer of the Year. Eligible candidates must have completed volunteer<br />

service within the area of zip code 21788. Friends, family or neighbors can<br />

The Emmitsburg Farmers Market located at 302 South Seton Avenue is<br />

open every Friday from 3:00-6:30 p.m. through September.<br />

The Thurmont Main Street Flea and Farmers Market will run Saturdays<br />

through September from 9:00 a.m. until noon at the Guardian Hose Company<br />

Carnival Grounds on the Boundary Avenue side.<br />
