Emmitsburg August
Town elections are being held this year for two Commissioner positions that
are currently held by Commissioner’s Rosensteel and Sweeney. Rosensteel and
Sweeney are both running for re-election. Two other candidates are also running
for the Commissioner slots: Carolyn Miller and Tim O’Donnell. The last day to
register to vote is September 3. Emmitsburg Election Day is September 29 at 22
East Main Street. You can vote between 7:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m.
The Town needs election Judges to help with the election. Judges must be
eligible (person is a registered and qualified voter who is not currently holding
office or a candidate for office). If you are eligible and can help on Election
Day, please call the Mayor at 301-600-6300.
Emmitsburg Town Officials welcomed the new Principal of Emmitsburg
Elementary School, Kathy Golightly. Principal Golightly graciously thanked
the town officials and welcomed all to visit the school. She stated that
Emmitsburg would be focusing on Math this coming year. Emmitsburg
School was lucky enough to receive Federal stimulus money via the American
Reinvestment and Recovery Act (ARRA) that will be used for additional
personnel and resources.
David Haller and Sue Cipperly asked the Commissioners to take a vote
on accepting/adopting the Draft Comprehensive Plan as the official Town
Council’s plan and to make it public for comment. The Commissioners voted
unanimously in favor of the adoption.
Corporal Grunwell reported that the deputies were able to make arrests
in the case of a continuing series of bicycle thefts. He also reported that a
few citizens had reported having items stolen out of their unlocked cars within the
town. Corporal Grunwell also claimed that, although he didn’t win, he had the best
barbeque chicken at the Mayor’s barbeque contest and vowed to win next time.
Commissioner Staiger encouraged citizens to submit questions or concerns
in writing to the town officials because it is helpful to track and log concerns
and helps maintain an open process between town government and its citizens.
Also, a reminder from the Commissioners and Police. Please be mindful
for the safety of the school children that are boarding school buses now that
school is back in session.
The Town of Thurmont election
for Mayor and two Commissioners
will be held on October 5, at
the Fireman’s Activity Building
in Thurmont from 7:00 a.m. to
8:00 p.m. Mayor Martin Burns
is running unopposed for reelection.
Wayne Hooper and Ron
Terpko are running for re-election
for Commissioner seats. One new
candidate, John Bean, is also running
The Town of Thurmont
donated $10,000 to the Thurmont
Community Ambulance. The
Ambulance members thanked the
town and stated that the funds will
be earmarked to help purchase a
new ambulance. Town officials then
voted, unanimously in favor, to add
an additional $1000 to the donation.
Mayor Burns commented that the
town considers this donation one
of the best investments to benefit
the community. The Ambulance
members want to remind the public
that the upcoming Colorfest is the
biggest fundraiser for the Fire and
Ambulance crews of Thurmont and
thought it would be OK to have
a beer or share a bottle of wine
on a picnic in the park. Their
main concern was with drunk and
disorderly conduct-not the act of
drinking itself. The Mayor asked Mr.
Oland to find out what the police
chief’s opinion would be on this
matter. After conferring with the
police, Mr. Oland will report back to
the town officials with a pro or con
2) Colorfest: Colorfest President,
Carol Robertson, spoke at the
town hall to lodge a complaint
about “Roaming” vendors at
Colorfest events. She mentioned
a traveling musician that showed
up at the Colorfest last year and
wanted to know if someone like
that could be removed from the
Fest. Commissioners were hesitant
to actually remove someone from
the Fest. However, Commissioners
mentioned that other roaming
vendors such as the balloon sellers
and someone last year selling toy
guns that looked like real guns
were also objectionable. The town
officials agreed that any roaming
vendors should still have a permit to
be conducting business at Colorfest.
The town wants to be able to identify
these roaming vendors and restrict
their movement within the Water
Street and Frederick Street areas as
well as limit any objectionable items
for sale (i.e. the real looking toy
guns).
