The Thurmont & Emmitsburg<br />

Community Show will be held at<br />

Catoctin High School on September<br />

11, 12 and 13, 2009.<br />

This year, premiums for all<br />

departments have been increased to<br />

<strong>1st</strong>-5.50; 2nd-$4.50 and 3rd-$4.00.<br />

In addition, premiums for the baked<br />

products department have been<br />

increased to <strong>1st</strong>-$12.00; 2nd-$11.00;<br />

3rd-$10.00. Premiums for cookies,<br />

candy, and miscellaneous in the<br />

baked products department will be<br />

<strong>1st</strong>-$5.50; 2nd-$4.50 and 3rd-$4.00.<br />

Premiums for the sewing department<br />

have been increased to <strong>1st</strong>-$6.00;<br />

2nd-$5.00 and 3rd-$4.00. The time<br />

for entering exhibits is as follows:<br />

Thursday night, September 10 from<br />

6:00 to 9:00 p.m., Friday, September<br />

11 from 8:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.<br />

Please note this change on entering of<br />

exhibits on Friday.<br />

Judging will begin at 12:30 p.m.<br />

Commercial exhibits may be entered<br />

on Friday, September 11 from 3:30<br />

to 5:30 p.m. The show will open<br />

to the public at 6:00 p.m. There is<br />

no admission charge to the event,<br />

however, a silver offering will be<br />

collected.<br />

On Friday night, after the<br />

community and civic flag ceremony,<br />

the show committee will honor the<br />

125th anniversary of the Vigilant<br />

Hose Company of Emmitsburg,<br />

beginning at 7:00 p.m. in the<br />

auditorium.<br />

Correction: The article about Brooke (Hoffman) Ridinger at Catoctin<br />

Veterinary Clinic was dubbed “Animal Lover Becomes Vet Tec” incorrectly.<br />

It should have read “Animal Lover Becomes Veterinarian.” There’s a big<br />

difference between a Vet Tec and a Veterinarian as Brooke well knows since<br />

she completed several more years of education. Big apologies to Brooke for<br />

that error. See that article on page 8 for the correction.<br />

Immediately following the program,<br />

(at approximately 8:30 p.m.) an<br />

auction of all baked goods exhibited<br />

at the show will be held in the<br />

auditorium. All grand champion and<br />

reserve champion baked goods will be<br />

sold at 9:00 p.m.<br />

On Saturday, the show will be<br />

held from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.<br />

Activities include a Market Goat,<br />

Beef, Sheep and Swine Fitting &<br />

Showing Contest from 9:00 a.m. to<br />

2:00 p.m. at the Ag Center and a Pet<br />

Show, beginning at 10:30 a.m. in<br />

front of the school. Entries will be<br />

accepted on the terrace in front of the<br />

school. The pet show is open to area<br />

residents. The petting zoo and pony<br />

rides will also be held on Saturday<br />

and Sunday.<br />

The Thurmont Grange will again<br />

serve their turkey and ham dinner in<br />

the school cafeteria from 3:00 to 7:00<br />

p.m. on Saturday night. Prices are:<br />

Adults-$12.00; children under 12-<br />

$6.00 and children under 5-$5.00.<br />

The 35th annual Catoctin FFA<br />

Alumni Beef, Sheep & Swine sale will<br />

begin at 7:00 p.m. in the Ag Center<br />

area on Saturday night while The<br />

Bluegrass Chapel Band performs at<br />

7:00 p.m. in the auditorium.<br />

Activities begin on Sunday,<br />

September 13 at 9:30 a.m. with the<br />

Goat Show, followed by the Dairy<br />

Show and Decorated Animal Contest.<br />

At Noon, the Catoctin FFA Alumni<br />

Chicken Bar-B-Que will be held in<br />

the cafeteria. The 30th annual Horse<br />

Shoe Pitching Contest will begin at<br />

1:00 p.m.<br />

The Log Sawing Contest will begin<br />

at 1:00 p.m. under the show tent in<br />

the Ag Center area.<br />

Also on Sunday afternoon, the<br />

Linda Elower Studio of Dance will be<br />

performing at 1:30 p.m. in the school<br />

auditorium.<br />

The Acacia Lodge #155, Ancient<br />

Free and Accepted Masons of<br />

Thurmont, Maryland, will be offering<br />

a Free Child Identification Program<br />

(CHIPS). The tentative times of this<br />

program will be Noon – 3:00 p.m.<br />

on Sunday. A picture of your child<br />

will be taken, along with a fingerprint<br />

and a page of supporting information<br />

will be loaded on a compact disk by<br />

computer. A DNA swab will also<br />

be collected for safe keeping. This<br />

information will be then available<br />

should circumstances arise where it<br />

will be needed. It must be emphasized<br />

that NONE of this information is kept<br />

on the computer or by the Lodge.<br />

Farm machinery will be displayed<br />

throughout the event and the famous<br />

“Cane and Abel” Brown Swiss cattle<br />

will be exhibited at the show. Pat<br />

The USAF Heritage of<br />

America Band, composed of 60<br />

outstanding musicians, has made<br />

significant cultural contributions<br />

to communities in Virginia, North<br />

and South Carolina, Maryland,<br />

Pennsylvania, Delaware and New<br />

Jersey. The band has received the<br />

Air Force Outstanding Unit Award<br />

four times and has been presented<br />

and Norman Sampson will have on<br />

display their Alpacas and Emu’s will<br />

be exhibited by Jim and Peggy Royer.<br />

There also will be a petting zoo,<br />

pony rides, with various animals for<br />

children to pet and photograph.<br />

The Barnyard Olympics for<br />

children will again be held on Sunday<br />

afternoon beginning at 1:30 p.m. Age<br />

Groups are (5-6), (7-8), (9-10) and<br />

(11-13). The event will be expanded<br />

because of increased participation by<br />

the children and premiums will be<br />

awarded.<br />

There will be a martial arts<br />

demonstration at 2:00 p.m. in the old<br />

gymnasium.<br />

Exhibits must be removed on<br />

Sunday, September 13 between 3:00<br />

p.m. to 7:00 p.m.<br />

The Community Show is<br />

sponsored by the Thurmont Grange,<br />

Catoctin FFA Chapter, Catoctin<br />

FFA Alumni and the Maryland State<br />

Agricultural Fair Board.<br />

Come and see the many farm,<br />

garden, household, canned goods,<br />

flowers, baked products, quilts,<br />

sewing exhibits and animals exhibited<br />

by the residents of the Catoctin High<br />

School area. There will be plenty<br />

of good food, entertainment, free<br />

parking and door prizes, donated by<br />

area businesses.<br />

Thurmont Hosts USAF Band Concert<br />

numerous mayoral proclamations<br />

from communities where they<br />

have appeared in concert. These<br />

professional musicians are very<br />

proud of their accomplishments and<br />

musical heritage.<br />

Appearing in concert at Catoctin<br />

High School on October 9, the<br />

band will be celebrating their sixth<br />

performance in Thurmont since<br />

1997. The concert is free and<br />

admission is by ticket only. Tickets<br />

are available at the Thurmont Town<br />

Office, The <strong>Library</strong>, and Gateway<br />

Flower and Gift Shop. To order<br />
