Community Show
The Thurmont & Emmitsburg
Community Show will be held at
Catoctin High School on September
11, 12 and 13, 2009.
This year, premiums for all
departments have been increased to
1st-5.50; 2nd-$4.50 and 3rd-$4.00.
In addition, premiums for the baked
products department have been
increased to 1st-$12.00; 2nd-$11.00;
3rd-$10.00. Premiums for cookies,
candy, and miscellaneous in the
baked products department will be
1st-$5.50; 2nd-$4.50 and 3rd-$4.00.
Premiums for the sewing department
have been increased to 1st-$6.00;
2nd-$5.00 and 3rd-$4.00. The time
for entering exhibits is as follows:
Thursday night, September 10 from
6:00 to 9:00 p.m., Friday, September
11 from 8:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
Please note this change on entering of
exhibits on Friday.
Judging will begin at 12:30 p.m.
Commercial exhibits may be entered
on Friday, September 11 from 3:30
to 5:30 p.m. The show will open
to the public at 6:00 p.m. There is
no admission charge to the event,
however, a silver offering will be
collected.
On Friday night, after the
community and civic flag ceremony,
the show committee will honor the
125th anniversary of the Vigilant
Hose Company of Emmitsburg,
beginning at 7:00 p.m. in the
auditorium.
Also, on Friday night the

Correction: The article about Brooke (Hoffman) Ridinger at Catoctin
Veterinary Clinic was dubbed “Animal Lover Becomes Vet Tec” incorrectly.
It should have read “Animal Lover Becomes Veterinarian.” There’s a big
difference between a Vet Tec and a Veterinarian as Brooke well knows since
she completed several more years of education. Big apologies to Brooke for
that error. See that article on page 8 for the correction.

Immediately following the program,
(at approximately 8:30 p.m.) an
auction of all baked goods exhibited
at the show will be held in the
auditorium. All grand champion and
reserve champion baked goods will be
sold at 9:00 p.m.
On Saturday, the show will be
held from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.
Activities include a Market Goat,
Beef, Sheep and Swine Fitting &
Showing Contest from 9:00 a.m. to
2:00 p.m. at the Ag Center and a Pet
Show, beginning at 10:30 a.m. in
front of the school. Entries will be
accepted on the terrace in front of the
school. The pet show is open to area
residents. The petting zoo and pony
rides will also be held on Saturday
and Sunday.
The Thurmont Grange will again
serve their turkey and ham dinner in
the school cafeteria from 3:00 to 7:00
p.m. on Saturday night. Prices are:
Adults-$12.00; children under 12-
$6.00 and children under 5-$5.00.
The 35th annual Catoctin FFA
Alumni Beef, Sheep & Swine sale will
begin at 7:00 p.m. in the Ag Center
area on Saturday night while The
Bluegrass Chapel Band performs at
7:00 p.m. in the auditorium.
Activities begin on Sunday,
September 13 at 9:30 a.m. with the
Goat Show, followed by the Dairy
Show and Decorated Animal Contest.

At Noon, the Catoctin FFA Alumni
Chicken Bar-B-Que will be held in
the cafeteria. The 30th annual Horse
Shoe Pitching Contest will begin at
1:00 p.m.
The Log Sawing Contest will begin
at 1:00 p.m. under the show tent in
the Ag Center area.
Also on Sunday afternoon, the
Linda Elower Studio of Dance will be
performing at 1:30 p.m. in the school
auditorium.
The Acacia Lodge #155, Ancient
Free and Accepted Masons of
Thurmont, Maryland, will be offering
a Free Child Identification Program
(CHIPS). The tentative times of this
program will be Noon – 3:00 p.m.
on Sunday. A picture of your child
will be taken, along with a fingerprint
and a page of supporting information
will be loaded on a compact disk by
computer. A DNA swab will also
be collected for safe keeping. This
information will be then available
should circumstances arise where it
will be needed. It must be emphasized
that NONE of this information is kept
on the computer or by the Lodge.
Farm machinery will be displayed
throughout the event and the famous
“Cane and Abel” Brown Swiss cattle
will be exhibited at the show. Pat

The USAF Heritage of
America Band, composed of 60
outstanding musicians, has made
significant cultural contributions
to communities in Virginia, North
and South Carolina, Maryland,
Pennsylvania, Delaware and New
Jersey. The band has received the
Air Force Outstanding Unit Award
four times and has been presented

and Norman Sampson will have on
display their Alpacas and Emu’s will
be exhibited by Jim and Peggy Royer.
There also will be a petting zoo,
pony rides, with various animals for
children to pet and photograph.
The Barnyard Olympics for
children will again be held on Sunday
afternoon beginning at 1:30 p.m. Age
Groups are (5-6), (7-8), (9-10) and
(11-13). The event will be expanded
because of increased participation by
the children and premiums will be
awarded.
There will be a martial arts
demonstration at 2:00 p.m. in the old
gymnasium.
Exhibits must be removed on
Sunday, September 13 between 3:00
p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
The Community Show is
sponsored by the Thurmont Grange,
Catoctin FFA Chapter, Catoctin
FFA Alumni and the Maryland State
Agricultural Fair Board.
Come and see the many farm,
garden, household, canned goods,
flowers, baked products, quilts,
sewing exhibits and animals exhibited
by the residents of the Catoctin High
School area. There will be plenty
of good food, entertainment, free
parking and door prizes, donated by
area businesses.
Thurmont Hosts USAF Band Concert
numerous mayoral proclamations
from communities where they
have appeared in concert. These
professional musicians are very
proud of their accomplishments and
musical heritage.
Appearing in concert at Catoctin
High School on October 9, the
band will be celebrating their sixth
performance in Thurmont since
1997. The concert is free and
admission is by ticket only. Tickets
are available at the Thurmont Town
Office, The Library, and Gateway
Flower and Gift Shop. To order
