September 2009 Boy Scout Troop 270 Earn Coin Merit Badge During the American Legion coin show, Boy Scout Troop 270 took the opportunity to earn their coin collecting merit badge. Leader, Dwayne Snyder, set up the training with dealer and collector, Alex Kidwell, of Thurmont. The boys learned about what coins are made of, why they become valuable, where they are printed, how the coins were started and much more. The training was exciting with speakers Alex Kidwell, collector and dealer of early American copper coins, who taught them about the history of the coins; Bob Pletla, a collector and dealer of bank notes (foreign printed bills), taught the boys how to ‘read’ a bill and put value on it; Steve Elsworth, Ret. Col from USArmy and one of the authors of the Red Book (the manual for coin collectors), talked about when he was a Scout in Utah and how he became a collector and dealer. Col. Elsworth also showed the boys the very first coin printed in the USA and shared today’s value. Emmitsburg Elementary Welcomes New Principal This year, Emmitsburg Elementary School is happy to welcome their new principal, Kathryn Golightly. Kathy is coming from Ballenger Creek Elementary where she was the Assistant Principal. She has 16 years experience having starting at North Frederick Elementary as a teacher followed by Waverly Elementary as a reading specialist, then Hillcrest and back to North Frederick again in the capacity of Assistant Principal. With her wide aray of experience, Kathy has a wealth of knowledge and experience to share. Kathy currently resides in Urbana and is the proud mom of daughter, Allyson. Allyson is following in her mother’s footsteps and is currently attending Aelon in North Carolina to become a teacher. Kathy is an avid softball player, “I love the sport.” She has played in Howard, Prince Georges, Frederick and Montgomery Counties, but now she plays mainly in Frederick City. Kathy has been thrilled with the warm reception she has received from the town and the staff at Emmitsburg Elementary School. She is looking forward to a great year and is happy to announce some additional funding the school has been awarded for the math department. Kathy’s office is set up like a child’s room with adolescent designs on the walls and children’s books all about. She said, “I am all about the children. I enjoy teaching and love being with the kids. I want my office to be a sanctuary for them. Mother Seton School’s New & Returning Teachers Sr. Ann Claire Rhoads returns to Mother Seton after teaching there 20 years ago. Since then, she taught and served as principal in other Catholic schools. She spent the last year in sabbatical in Chicago where she completed a ‘Year of Vincentian Spirituality.’ At Mother Seton she teaches Grade 8 Religion, Language Arts, and Technology at Mother Seton School. She will also lead the Vincentian Marian Youth Group at the school. Kaitlin Buyny Nell is a recent Mount St. Mary’s University graduate. She was a student teacher at Emmitsburg Elementary. She is currently teaching 5th grade at Mother Seton School. Amy Ramsay comes to Mother Seton School from a Catholic school New York. She is a middle school teacher at MSS teaching Spanish and religion. Christina D’Agonstino is a recent graduate of Mount St. Mary’s University. She did her student teaching at St. John Regional Catholic School in Frederick. She is currently teaching 2nd grade.
