20 . the catoctin banner . September 2009 Lauren Burdette is a Kindergarten teacher moving to Thurmont Primary School from Whittier Elementary. She has five years of experience in the educational system. She is married to Brian and currently lives in Thurmont. Lauren has two cats, Rascal and KiKi and plays guitar and piano in her free time. Kennetha Orsini is a second grade teacher. She took time off to be an at-home-Mom after eleven years in the Montgomery County school system. She is from Middletown where she and her husband Mike have three children, Ashley, Nick and Anthony. Kennetha has a Yorkie named Jasmine, a cat named Tiger and a bunny named Odette. Odette will become the classroom pet. Kennetha loves photography, scrapbooking, shopping and going to concerts in her free time. She is excited to join the Thurmont Primary School family and feels she hit the “jack pot” with all the support she has received. Elaine Janik is a first grade teacher coming to Thurmont Primary School from Urbana Elementary. She has 14 years of educational experience which started in Emmitsburg. She lives in Middletown with her husband John. Her son, John, is a Physicist and her daughter, Liz, is an accountant living in China. Elaine likes to play the guitar and piano in her free time. She also likes to make jewelry and do rubber stamping. Elaine is excited to be at Thurmont Primary School. “It is the first time I have been in a new school. I have a classroom where I can shut the doors and play my guitar for the kids. She arrives with 15 years of service in the education system, most recently working at Twin Ridge Elementary. She lives in Frederick County with her husband Rob. They have two children, Andrew and Ellie. Jana and her family are big soccer fans and players. She likes to travel, read, exercise, scrapbook and spend time with her relatives. She is thrilled with the warm welcome she has received so far at Thurmont Primary and is enjoying the beginning of the school year. Darci Feifer is a Special Education Pre-K teacher who has worked in the private sector most recently and is new to the Frederick County School system. She lives in Frederick County with her husband Steve and their three children Brendan, Madison and Brianna. Her hobbies while not teaching are reading, baking and spending time with her family. Darci is excited to be at Thurmont Primary School and is enjoying the beginning of the school year with the students. Thurmont Elementary Welcomes New & Returning Teachers Photo by Carie Stafford Thurmont Elementary teachers pictured left to right are Tina Delauter, Anneliese Simpson, Karen Jennings, Laura Estep, Craig Sharp, Jackie Pier, Melissa Monn, Kate Loverock, Jessica Petela and Christina Koerper. Tina Delauter is spending the first half of her day at TPS and the second half at TES as a special education assistant. She lives in Thurmont with her husband Kirby and four children, Maureen, Will, Emily and Sam. She has two dogs, Bailey and Roxie and loves to read, crochet, knit and spend time with her family. Anneliese Simpson is from Thurmont. She worked at TMS last year. This year she is a special education assistant. Anneliese is married to Alec and they have three children, Julia, Nicholas and Ethan. She has two cats, Angela and Tom and a dog, Fritz. She likes to cook and run in her free time. She is a D.C. United Soccer fan. Karen Jennings, from Westminster, worked at Ballenger Creek and has 12 years of educational experience. Karen is married to Tony and they have twin boys, Tommy and Luke. She has two dogs, Terrapin and Chessie. She likes to scuba dive and watch her teams, the Baltimore Ravens and Maryland Terrapins, play. Laura Estep from Thurmont is returning to her old stomping grounds after taking a few years off for family time. Having been a student at TES and then a teacher for many years there, Laura is excited to be back teaching 4th grade. Laura is married to John and has three children, Jack, Josie and Lucy. She has a cat, Leo, and enjoys reading, running and gardening. Craig Scharp is back! He returns to teach 5th grade again. Craig is married to Monica and they have three children, Josh, Ben and Amanda. Mr. Scharp has an interesting classroom; his is the herpetology (reptile) classroom. In addition to the skinned critters in his classroom, at home he has two dogs, four cats, turtles, lizards, frogs, salamanders and snakes. Craig loves to spend time camping with his family and has an interest in naturalist studies. Jackie Pier is a Mount St Mary’s intern who is working with the 3rd grade this year. She has a dog named Haley and a cat named Jack. Principal The staff and students at Thurmont Middle School are happy to have Marty Rochlin as their new Assistant Principal. Marty started out his career as a counselor at Camp Airy in Thurmont, and then went on to become an elementary and middle school teacher. He has taught several different subjects, and enjoys tutoring math. He advanced to the Assistant Principal position at Crestwood Middle in 2004. Marty lives in Ellicott City with his wife Pam and their daughter Lilly. Marty is a big Orioles and Ravens fan, loves and coaches soccer, and likes to play a good game of basketball with the school staff to unwind at the end of a day. Photo by Carie Stafford Marty is a “people person.” He earned the “Clown Fish” award for the past four years at Crestwood. He is excited to be at Thurmont Middle and has had a warm reception from the staff and community so far. Marty feels that if he can make a difference with a child to help their day go better, it is a good day at the office. He believes that solving problems “makes school better for both students and families.” There of course will be fires to put out, but he is hoping to do that with a positive outcome for all involved. Marty has an open door policy and is excited about the new school year and is looking forward to meeting and working with the staff, students and families. CHS Safe and Sane Calling all 2010 senior parents. The Safe and Sane Group has started planning for our graduating seniors. The Safe and Sane Committe meets the 2nd Wednesday of each month, at the CHS Media Center at 7:00 p.m. (except the month of October which will meet on October 7). The Committee would like to thank our past sponsors and supporters and welcome your continued support. It’s our great community that makes this event possible. Mellissa says, “I go for the food.” Kate Loverock is a graduate of Mount St. Mary’s and is excited to be teaching special education, Learning for Life. She has two dogs, Pebbles and Rosie. She is a Steelers and Orioles fan. Jessica Petela from Thurmont is coming from Whittier Elementary teaching special education. She has a dog named Ralph and enjoys spending her free time with her family. Christina Koerper is a Mount St Mary’s intern who is specializing in special education. She is presently on the Woman’s Golf league at the Mount.
