Cub Scouts Annual Bike Rodeo
by Richard Gibbs
Twenty five cub scouts from Pack 270 participated in the Pack’s annual bike rodeo,
spending a Saturday morning learning about bicycle maintenance and safety, and then
participating in a series of skills events that tested their biking abilities.
The Thurmont Police Department graciously allowed the Pack to utilize their
parking lot for the event, and the youngsters took advantage of the multi-level lot to
ride through cone weaves, a series of turns to test their hand-signal skills, participate in
balancing skills and test their ability to toss newspapers while riding.
Officer Tyler Kemp impressed the boys with a talk about bike safety, stressing the
importance of riding with helmets properly fitted. The department also provided
the information regarding bike safety and gave the kids registration forms to register
their bikes with the Department. Dave Stellitano, whose son was previously a
member of the Pack and is now with Boy Scout Troop 270, spent a good deal of time
demonstrating the basics of bike maintenance.
The rodeo, held on August 28, is the first event of the Pack’s year, which also
features such events as the Pinewood Derby, outdoor camping, hiking, visits to historic
sites, Christmas caroling, and public service activities including food collection and
roadside cleanup projects. This year’s bike rodeo culminated with a pizza party at the
town’s pavilion behind the police station, with pizza provided by Rocky’s. Pack 270
meets as a pack on the third Monday of every month, at 6:30, at the American Legion
building in Thurmont, and invites any child ages 6-10 to join in the fun and excitement
of cub scouting, just come to a meeting and sign up.
