Emmitsburg’s Mayor, Jim Hoover,
held his annual Community Bar-
B-Que Competition on Saturday,
August 15 at the Emmitsburg
Community Park. Mayor Hoover’s
love of chicken barbeque and his
desire to give back to the community
ignited the idea to hold the event
that is steadily growing in attendance
from year to year. With the help of
many businesses donating supplies
and equipment, Mayor Hoover
is able to donate proceeds from
the event to a college scholarship
fund which is awarded to a local
2 . the catoctin banner . September 2009
from the publisher
Dear Reader:
While I’m out and about collecting photos, articles and advertisements, I see
and talk with a lot of people all over the area. The nature of this public service
carries a lot of interaction that results in knowing how people really feel about
a number of topics but most commonly what I learn is how people feel about
our community. I encounter many who are genuinely happy and appreciative
of others. I encounter the doers who help, over and over again, with an event, a
service or an organization as a volunteer. I encounter business owners who give
back to us either financially or with their time.
It is our intent that The Catoctin Banner communicates with our readers in
a respectful manner about good people and businesses to give us all a lift. As
our economic conditions become more strained, it is even more important to
appreciate those who continue to give. Please take time from your busy schedules
to say “Thank You.”
I’m going to take a little minute here to say “Thank You” to our advertisers.
The Catoctin Banner exists due to the advertising support of those featured in
each publication. We don’t have sponsors who support this service. The Catoctin
Banner is a public service publication for which the cost of printing and mailing
are paid in full by our advertisers. They have remained consistent even in our
tough economic times. Thank you.
I hope that you will patronize the advertisers who reach out to you through The
Catoctin Banner. Many of our advertisers change the content of their ads from
month to month, so look closely. You may even find some discount coupons. Tell
them you saw them here at The Catoctin Banner!
she completed several more years of education. Big apologies to Brooke for
Emmitsburg August
Town elections are being held this year for two Commissioner positions that
are currently held by Commissioner’s Rosensteel and Sweeney. Rosensteel and
Sweeney are both running for re-election. Two other candidates are also running
for the Commissioner slots: Carolyn Miller and Tim O’Donnell. The last day to
register to vote is September 3. Emmitsburg Election Day is September 29 at 22
East Main Street. You can vote between 7:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m.
The Town needs election Judges to help with the election. Judges must be
eligible (person is a registered and qualified voter who is not currently holding
office or a candidate for office). If you are eligible and can help on Election
Day, please call the Mayor at 301-600-6300.
Emmitsburg Town Officials welcomed the new Principal of Emmitsburg
Elementary School, Kathy Golightly. Principal Golightly graciously thanked
the town officials and welcomed all to visit the school. She stated that
Emmitsburg would be focusing on Math this coming year. Emmitsburg
School was lucky enough to receive Federal stimulus money via the American
Reinvestment and Recovery Act (ARRA) that will be used for additional
personnel and resources.
David Haller and Sue Cipperly asked the Commissioners to take a vote
on accepting/adopting the Draft Comprehensive Plan as the official Town
Council’s plan and to make it public for comment. The Commissioners voted
unanimously in favor of the adoption.
Corporal Grunwell reported that the deputies were able to make arrests
in the case of a continuing series of bicycle thefts. He also reported that a
few citizens had reported having items stolen out of their unlocked cars within the
town. Corporal Grunwell also claimed that, although he didn’t win, he had the best
barbeque chicken at the Mayor’s barbeque contest and vowed to win next time.
Commissioner Staiger encouraged citizens to submit questions or concerns
in writing to the town officials because it is helpful to track and log concerns
and helps maintain an open process between town government and its citizens.
Also, a reminder from the Commissioners and Police. Please be mindful
for the safety of the school children that are boarding school buses now that
school is back in session.
2) Colorfest: Colorfest President,
about “Roaming” vendors at
Colorfest events. She mentioned
a traveling musician that showed
up at the Colorfest last year and
wanted to know if someone like
that could be removed from the
Fest. Commissioners were hesitant
to actually remove someone from
the Fest. However, Commissioners
mentioned that other roaming
vendors such as the balloon sellers
and someone last year selling toy
guns that looked like real guns
were also objectionable. The town
officials agreed that any roaming
vendors should still have a permit to
be conducting business at Colorfest.
The town wants to be able to identify
these roaming vendors and restrict
their movement within the Water
Street and Frederick Street areas as
well as limit any objectionable items
for sale (i.e. the real looking toy
Pennsyvania, North Carolina and Ohio were present to show what they have
learned and to teach it to others in attendance. Each teacher, Sensei, has a
different flavor and style on how they present the different defense moves and
to pass it on to another is a great honor.
Dr. Moses Powell believed in survival through simplicity. If it is easier for
a person to understand and remember the moves, then he or she will be better
at defending themselves against an attack. He was not a proponent of fighting
for the entertainment value.
As Grand Master Darryl King stated, “You adapt the moves to what you
know.” Having grown up in SE DC, GM King started learning the art of
Sanuces Ryu Jujitsu 20 years ago. “I needed something that was going to
allow me to defend myself if needed, but I also like to grace, respect and the
history behind the art itself.” “I enjoy teaching and encourage people to try it.
They will be surprised how easy it is.”
Threatening weather did not spoil
parents playing with toddlers in the
shallow end and a never-ending line
at the diving board where kids made
a splash while performing cannon
balls, pencil dives, flips and even
some belly flops.
A moon bounce provided by
Life Horse’s, Joe Topper, kept kids
hopping while music by Classic
Affairs D.J.’s. lended a rhythm to the
celebration.
Mayor Jim Hoover was on hand
to help oversee the night’s events
and enjoy the water frolics exhibited
by the largest crowd of attendees
in five years. Mayor Hoover said,
“I am pleased to see so many
Remember When...?
Terry Miller, a 1957 graduate of Thurmont
High School, invites readers to join him on a
trip to the America of his childhood in the 1940s
and 1950s. As they are transported to a small
town (Thurmont) at the foot of the Catoctin
mountains, readers partake in the events that
shaped not only Miller’s life, but the course of
our nation’s history.
Terry will be the guest speaker at the
Thurmont Regional Library, Thursday, October
8, at 7:00 p.m., to provide an interesting
presentation about how he came to write his
latest book release, “The Mountain Beyond” plus discuss some his experiences
of growing up in Thurmont when “life was just a bit simpler.”
“Many of us travel mountaintops in our lives. What do we face as we make
the journey? The terrain along the paths and trails to the mountain’s top may
not be the one originally planned,” says Miller. “We have choices with each
step we take. Will we move forward or backward? We can choose to go to the
top, take a different direction, stop along the way to get refreshed or simply
quit. The choice is ours.”
Come join Terry for an entertaining evening of “traveling through some of
life’s experiences that evolved into personal growth lessons and lasting spiritual
strengths.”
A Neighbor Needs YOUR Help
The Thurmont Lions Club will dedicate the profits from their final
Sandwich Sale of the season to assist the Barry Glass family. Just three short
months ago, Barry Glass was working as a tow truck driver, volunteering in/
around Thurmont and proud to be able to provide for his family. In the past
19 years as a tow truck driver, he never missed a day due to sickness. Then it
happened…the dreaded announcement that so many people have had to deal
with – cancer. Barry had surgery on May 6, 2009 to remove a tumor from
his colon but the doctors were unable to remove the entire tumor and they
discovered that the cancer had also spread to his liver.
He is currently undergoing chemotherapy, is unable to return to work, and
his insurance expired on June 30, 2009. He has applied for Social Security
benefits but will not receive any funds until the end of the year. In the
meantime, he is in arrears on payments for his daily/monthly necessities. The
Thurmont Lions Club will use funds from the Sandwich Sale to help pay some
of these outstanding bills -- it is the policy of the Lions Club to make payments
directly to the billing agencies on behalf of the resident.
Please come out on Saturday, September 5 and enjoy a Pit Beef, Pork, Ham,
Turkey sandwich or platter and show one of our neighbors that “Thurmont
cares”! The Sandwich Sale will be held at Bell Hill Farm, 1-1/2 miles north
of Thurmont on the west side of Route 15 from 10:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m.
or until sold out. If you are unable to attend the Sandwich Sale, you can still
assist Barry Glass and his family by making your tax deductible donation
payable to “TLC Foundation, Inc.”, noted “For: Barry Glass Sandwich Sale”
and mailing to Thurmont Lions Club, P. O. Box 306, Thurmont, MD 21788.
at 301-271-7613 to ensure a seat for this very special event.
Award-winning Thurmont actor, Spence Watson, will portray the
controversial southern writer and theatrical icon for 75 minutes in a one-man
show created from several Tennessee Williams prefaces and New York Times
essays written from 1947 to 1977. “An Evening With Tennessee Williams”
reveals the essential Williams both as a man of international cosmopolitan tastes
but who possessed genuine love for colloquial southern expressionism.
The Thurmont Thespians will produce this special event in honor of Mr.
Williams approaching 100th birthday. Special permission to present this premiere
play was obtained by its author, Spence Watson, from the estate of Tennessee
Williams at the University of the South in Sewanee, TN. “I wanted to create a
work that delved beneath the surface of his fame as writer,” said Watson.
Thomas Lanier “Tennessee” Williams was born the second of three children
on March 26, 1911 in Columbus, MS and died February 24, 1983 in New
York City at the age of 71, apparently of a choking accident. As a young man,
he attended the University of Missouri and was a graduate of the University of
Iowa. He took the nick-name “Tennessee” from the state of his father’s birth.
Catoctin High School
Student attends Stanford
University’s EPGY
Summer Program
Todd Seiss, a junior at Catoctin High School,
spent his summer in California attending
Stanford University’s Educational Program
for Gifted Youth (EPGY) Summer Program.
He studied Quantum Mechanics; a course
most students are not usually eligible to take
until their junior/senior year in college. Quantum
Mechanics is the study of motion on the atomic scale.
Todd was one of 23 students from across
the globe selected to participate in this program.
Other attendees were from India, Indonesia, China, Italy,
and across the U.S. Todd was eligible for selection due to his
academic achievements. The Seiss Family would like to extend a sincere thank
you to Catoctin High School’s faculty and staff, Thurmont American Legion
Show
Alex Kidwell of Thurmont is
a dealer and collector of coins,
specializing in early American copper
coins and U.S. Gold. He started
collecting them when he was seven
years old and enjoys the history of
the coins he collects. He owns a
silver 1792 1/2 Disnne coin that was
made from the donated silver from
Martha Washington’s personal silver
collection.
Being a member of the American
Legion Post 168, it was only fitting
that Alex arrange to bring together
dealers and collectors of coins and
notes for a show for people to
browse and barter. Not every dealer
deals or collects the same items, some
specialize in bank notes and others
specialize in pre-Civil War or certain
time periods and much more. Each
dealer has a different story to tell and
a wealth of information to share.
With such a great turn out for the
first coin show, you can bet more will
be coming.
local Animal lover Becomes Veterinarian
While growing up on a dairy
farm in Emmitsburg Brooke
(Hoffman) Ridinger realized she
wanted to be a veterinarian. While
she was a senior at Catoctin High
School, she started working at the
Catoctin Vet Clinic in Thurmont.
Already a highly motivated person,
Brooke was able to take some
preliminary classes at FCC during
her senior year at CHS so that
when she graduated from CHS
in 2003, she progressed to the
University of Maryland, where she
received a BS in Animal Science
in 2005. She then went on to the
Virginia-Maryland Regional College
of Veterinary Medicine at Virginia
Tech, receiving her Doctor of
Veterinary Medicine (DVM) this year.
Brooke excelled in all areas of her
schooling. Motivated and driven to
achieve her goals, she has spent her
time studying and learning and it has
paid off. Testing high on the SATs,
GREs and having a high GPA in high
school plus having personal experience
as a vet assistant, she finished school
earlier than most students.
Brooke is now back in the Catoctin
feeder area serving our four-legged
family members, large and small. Her
dream is to work with dairy cows and
she is able to do that by working with
Dr. Richard Eastep in Hagerstown.
dog at the Catoctin Vet Clinic in Thurmont.
She is also working part-time at the
Catoctin Vet Clinic, keeping her
mind sharp while working with small
animals. She said, “I love the little
animals, too. The people at the clinic
are fantastic. The doctors are very
knowledgeable and I wanted to stay
in Maryland.” Dr. Bramson and Dr.
Keane are happy to have Brooke back
and are very excited about having
their prodigy working with them as a
colleague.
Brooke is married to Jason
Akers Celebrates 104 at Shamrock
On August 19, Alice Akers of
Frederick, celebrated her 104th birthday.
Her favorite meal is crab cakes. On her
birthday evening, she selected Shamrock
Restaurant for her birthday dinner of
Crab Imperial.
Ms. Akers
walked unassisted to
her seat. She claims
that a life time of
walking is the key
to staying in great
shape, even at 104.
She worked for
37 and a half years
for the Maryland
School for the
Deaf in Frederick
where she was the
superintendent’s
“right hand”
(assistant). She
was a Sunday
School teacher at
the Centennial
Memorial United
Methodist Church and a graduate of
Frederick North Market School and
Frederick High School.
Ms. Akers was married and widowed
at a young age. She has one daughter,
Betty Michael, who is married to H. L.
Michael. She has two grandchildren,
Bruce and Holly Michael, five great
grandchildren and two great-great
grandchildren.
Ms. Akers claimed over and over that
the reason she has lived such a long and
healthy life is due to great family and
friends and a blessing from God. During
her dinner, she talked about the biggest
changes she has seen in her lifetime
from our way of
living in general to the
automobile and finally
our bathroom updates.
Ms. Akers’
best friend, Robin
Fox, whom she
affectionately refers
to as her “Angel,”
accompanied her for
her special dinner
along with Robin’s
husband Robert, son
Joe and Joe’s wife
Rachel. Joe tells the
story of how they
met Ms. Akers when
he was five years
old, eighteen years
ago. His mother was
driving by Ms. Akers as she was trying
to shovel snow from her walkway. She
and Joe went to work helping Ms. Akers
and since then, Joe has become her
‘handyman’, as she lovingly calls him.
Donna and Dawn at the Shamrock
would like to thank Ms. Akers for
patronizing their restaurant for her
birthday dinner.
Mike’s Auto Body Opens New Show Room
When he was starting out in
business Mike Jensen rented a garage
in the New Market area where he
specialized in vehicle small repairs
and Corvette restorations. Finding
that he needed a bigger facility,
he rented at Bogley Chevrolet in
Thurmont for five years before
purchasing the building on Catoctin
Furnace Road in Thurmont to
expand again. Mr. Jensen’s recent
expansion of his customer service
area comes just in time for his 20th
Anniversary in business which he
will celebrate in November.
Now enjoying the new diamond
plate-accented show room space,
Mike’s Auto Body’s Parts Manager,
Chris Dumas said, “We didn’t realize
how tight we were with three people
in the office until we had a bigger
office.” He showed how small the
previous office had been. Office
Manager, Angie Ridenour and
General Manager, Michael Klein,
who shared that space, agreed. Mr.
Jensen noted that when he started
out, his two employees fit in the space.
Now with 13, it made sense to expand.
Mike’s Auto Body has a
computerized measuring system
with a spot welder which duplicates
factory welding specifications and
will repair frame damage back
to factory specifications within
one millimeter. While known for
Corvette repairs and restoration,
Mr. Jensen has expanded over the
years to service all vehicles that have
been involved in an accident for
collision repair as well as all makes
and models of antiques, classics
and muscle cars for restoration.
Mr. Jensen said, “We take care of
the whole repair with personalized
service. It’s real important to us.”
He emphasizes customer service
because he wants customers to
return. He says, “We’re with the
customer from the beginning of the job
until after the repair is complete with
customer service inquiries.” This level
of service helped rank Mike’s Auto
Body in the top 10% of 6,000 shops
Timeless Trends Boutique Opens in Old Creager Furniture Store Building
Many have wondered what was
to come of the old Creager Furniture
Building which is located at 21 East
Main Street in Thurmont. Well, the
answer is out and Timeless Trends
Boutique is in. The LeRoche family
bought the building about two years
ago when the building had fallen
into disarray due to a few years of
being vacant. With a leaky roof
and water damage throughout the
building, the LeRoche family went to
original glory.
Knowing about the high standard
of value and customer service that the
Creager family established, Virginia
LeRoche knew she wanted to keep that
tradition alive.
As a child, Virginia LeRoche use
to accompany her aunt to yard sales,
auctions and antique stores. With years
of learning the value of someone else’s
stuff, Virginia always wanted to open a
store of her own.
With her mother’s illness and
subsequent passing, Virginia had taken
a leave of absence from her job and
found that it was the right time to bring
her dream to a reality. Timeless Trends
Boutique is a touch of class with a little
vintage and a modern twist.
The premise behind the store is to
offer that “last little touch to finish a
Thurmont Curves under New Ownership
Jamie (pictured) and David Keller
from Taneytown are the official new
owners of the Thurmont Curves as
of August 28. Jamie Keller has been
in fitness for eight years as a personal
The Kellers
invite ladies from
all over our region
to get into the
new Curve Smart
The Curve Smart
System records the
workout of a person
when the user
inserts their card
into each piece of
equipment they use.
Via the computer
card, the user’s workout
details like calories burned, time on
each machine and settings used are
monitored and recorded. At the end
of the workout, the computer charts
the user’s progress and gives goals for
the next workout.
The Kellers also promote the
Ownership
The St. Philomena
store, located at 200-4 West
Main Street in Emmitsburg,
is under new ownership.
On June 1, Pam Sielaff
and her husband, Bruno,
became the official owners
of the store which was
formerly owned by Allison
and Richard Mauro. “A
priest blessed the business
as a communication center
rather than a retail store,”
Pam said. “My goal is to
spread the gospel through the store.
It’s not just a business, it’s a ministry
where people can grow closer to
God.”
Pam has made some subtle
changes to the store like organizing
a wall of crosses with unique crosses
and starting a prayer list. She
and her family have added fresh
paint and plan to remove a wall to
make more retail space. While the
store already boasts an impressive
collection of retail items like jewelry,
medallions, books, rosaries, art,
plus various items made by nuns,
Pam is reaching out to local artisans
to consign even more unique art.
In addition, special orders are
welcomed.
The month of September is a
month-long Grand Re-Opening
Celebration at the store with giveaways,
door prizes, special guests
and refreshments. Fr. Vincent
tickling our taste buds
by Denise Valentine
A monthly column by a community member who loves to cook!
Hello again, everyone. With the Labor Day Weekend falling later than
usual, it gives me the opportunity to once again promote the Thurmont &
Emmitsburg Community Show. I thought I would give you another recipe to
bake that you can enter in the show.
This Sour Cream Pound Cake recipe has been prepared by many 4-H’ers
over the years for entry at the fair. It also appears in our 4-H Club Cookbook
and has won many blue ribbons for those who have entered it. When I called
to ask permission to use the recipe, I found out that it was in an agricultural
publication many years ago and has been passed down to each new generation.
I hope you really do take time to enter something at the Community Show
this year. We would love to see you there.
Sour Cream Pound Cake
1 cup butter, softened ¼ tsp. baking soda
3 cups sugar 1 cup sour cream
6 eggs 2 tsp. vanilla extract
3 cups flour 2 tsp. almond extract
Cream butter and sugar in mixer bowl until light and fluffy. Add eggs,
1 at a time; beat well. Reserve 2 tablespoons flour. Add remaining flour
to creamed mixture; mix well. Add sour cream; mix well. Add reserved
2 tablespoons flour, soda and flavorings; mix well. Pour into greased and
floured 10 inch tube pan. Bake for 1½ hours at 325 degrees.
Check-Ups
By Jeanne Angleberger, Shaklee Associate
When was the last time you had a complete health check-up? Do you recall
the results?
If you know the date and outcome of your last health check-up, more than
likely you are in the minority instead of the majority of people. Unless you have
experience discomfort or pain, it’s easy to think everything is ok health-wise.
Knowing your health status and having periodical check-ups certainly gives you
the opportunity to take care of health issues.
Take the time NOW! Call your health provider to schedule a physical exam.
Ask what tests are needed. Most full course health exams include a complete
blood work-up.
Be proactive for your health! List any concerns or questions you have so that
when you see the doctor you’ll be prepared to discuss your health.
In addition, a nutritional consultant can help you choose the right vitamins
and supplements to maintain healthiness. As we know, our food supply no
longer provides the daily value of nutrients our body needs.
Another important check-up is a skin exam by a dermatologist. As you
know, skin cancer is on the rise. Early detection can mean the difference in
diagnosis and treatment. Remember, your skin requires care, too.
Seeing your dentist twice a year is the recommendation for dental exams.
Keeping your teeth healthy is very important. As a Certified Dental Assistant,
I cannot emphasize this enough! Chewing your food well is the first step to
digestion. Healthy teeth and gums are essential. Learn proper brushing and
flossing from a dental professional.
A vision and hearing exam should be included with your health check-up.
They are parts of the body that we may take for granted. Perhaps your health
provider can tell you how often exams are recommended.
This information is a reminder that we must take care of our health and
body every day. As I mentioned previously, small changes in lifestyle can make a
difference.
What if the change you make today, creates a healthier life for you tomorrow,
wouldn’t it be well worth it?
Therapeutic Riding Program Seeking
Volunteers
The Frederick County 4H Therapeutic Riding Program is in need of
volunteers, 12 years of age and older, to work in the barn getting horses ready
for our students who have disabilities. Volunteers are also needed to lead
horses and side walk with students during riding classes.
Previous experience with horses is not necessary. Volunteering is lots of fun
and great exercise. Call at 301-898-3587 or email fc4htrp@aol.com or visit
www.fc4htrp.org for more information.
“I am Jan Owens.”
As a high school student,
you may have had Jan
Owens as your Biology
teacher at Catoctin High
School. Today, she is
frequently seen walking
or riding a scooter around
Thurmont completing her
daily chores. She taught at
CHS for 25 years, starting
in 1971 soon after the
school was built. She taught
in the same classroom for
each of those 25 years
and while her classroom
remained consistent,
her teaching approach
was ever-changing. Jan
Owens believes that, “to
be curious is to be alive.”
This motto was reflected
in her pragmatic teaching
labs like her Mystery Lab,
karotyping lab, forensics lab
and Mad Scientist Lab.
Jan hated that teachers always
started off the academic year with
rules and regulations. So, on the first
day of school each year, her students
would enter her classroom and have
immediate hands-on experience with
mysterious items such as a pig with
eight legs, skulls, various human
bones, gallstones, ostrich eggs, pine
cones, and other biological items in
her award-winning Mystery Lab.
She said, “I wanted to turn them
on to science within the first week
of school.” She never taught from
the standard text book and tests
since she felt it limited her students’
interest. She feels that students who
become inquisitive in a hands-on
manner show results in science.
Jan shared many of her labs with
other science teachers at workshops
and conferences. Her Mystery Lab
was published nationally. Once
published, she heard from teachers
all over the globe and received gifts
of mysterious objects to add to her
lab collection. In 1987, Jan received
the ultimate award for a Biology
teacher, the Presidential Award for
Excellence in Science. Each year,
every state designates a winner. It is
the highest award a teacher can get.
Part of the award was an all-expensepaid
trip to Washington, D.C. where
she met President Ronald Regan. She
said, “The awards are great, but it
means more to me to have former
students come up to me and say how
much they learned from me.”
Some of her former students
describe her class as, “awesome”
adding that “we never knew what
she’d come up with next.” It was not
uncommon to see Jan’s alter-ego, Dr.
I. Luv Biology, enter the classroom.
That was her costume for her Mad
Scientist Lab. Increasingly popular
with teachers as well as her student’s,
her goal of holding each student’s
interest by giving them real life
interactions was a hit.
The bay and ocean appeal to Jan
since she grew up in Anne Arundel
County along the Chesapeake Bay.
doing water sports was a daily
occurrence for her as a younster. She
said, “Growing up we had boats,
not cars.” That’s how she got
around. Her shift from the water to
the mountains occurred soon after
graduating from Frostburg State
College when she took the job at
CHS. She said, “I love Thurmont. I
have lived here longer than any other
place. I still love the beach and the
water, but this is home.”
In addition to teaching, Jan
was an aerobic dance instructor
10 years in Thurmont, Gettysburg
and Fairfield. Having retired from
teaching in 1996, Jan now stays
busy teaching Bible studies. She also
organizes a big snail-mail greeting
card ministry. She says that these
days her real passion is serving senior
citizens. Jan always attributes her
successes to God and her mother,
Mildred, who was her best friend.
She passed when Jan was 25 years
old. Jan will treasure memories of
her for a lifetime.

Cub Scouts Annual Bike Rodeo
by Richard Gibbs
Twenty five cub scouts from Pack 270 participated in the Pack’s annual bike rodeo,
spending a Saturday morning learning about bicycle maintenance and safety, and then
participating in a series of skills events that tested their biking abilities.
The Thurmont Police Department graciously allowed the Pack to utilize their
parking lot for the event, and the youngsters took advantage of the multi-level lot to
ride through cone weaves, a series of turns to test their hand-signal skills, participate in
balancing skills and test their ability to toss newspapers while riding.
Officer Tyler Kemp impressed the boys with a talk about bike safety, stressing the
importance of riding with helmets properly fitted. The department also provided
the information regarding bike safety and gave the kids registration forms to register
their bikes with the Department. Dave Stellitano, whose son was previously a
member of the Pack and is now with Boy Scout Troop 270, spent a good deal of time
demonstrating the basics of bike maintenance.
The rodeo, held on August 28, is the first event of the Pack’s year, which also
features such events as the Pinewood Derby, outdoor camping, hiking, visits to historic
sites, Christmas caroling, and public service activities including food collection and
roadside cleanup projects. This year’s bike rodeo culminated with a pizza party at the
town’s pavilion behind the police station, with pizza provided by Rocky’s. Pack 270
meets as a pack on the third Monday of every month, at 6:30, at the American Legion
building in Thurmont, and invites any child ages 6-10 to join in the fun and excitement
of cub scouting, just come to a meeting and sign up.
Frederick Community College Teams with the Seton Center on a Clothing Drive for
“Jumpstart Your Job Search” Program
Frederick Community College’s
(FCC) Food Service Department has
teamed up with The Seton Center,
Inc. on a clothing drive for the
third “Jumpstart Your Job Search”
program Wednesday, September 23,
9:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at St. Joseph’s
Provincial House Conference Center
in Emmitsburg. This program helps
people to find jobs or improve their
current job situation, and provides
participants with gently used
women’s clothing for interviews and
beginning a job.
FCC is doing this partnership
as a part of the American Business
Women’s Day on September 22. The
The shift from the former
Thurmont Library’s one-room
coziness to the spacious facility which
brought a much larger selection of
books and movies to for library users
has been a refreshing treat. In the
new library, it is much easier to park,
locate resources and check-out and
return library materials.
The updated children’s area has
computers that play games and
teach at the same time. The young
adult section has a large selection
and comfortable space where young
adults can safely hang out and talk
about their favorite books.
Older adults enjoy weekly
and monthly craft sessions and
discussions about a variety of topics
including taxes and health care.
A Very Special “Thank You”
Back in 1987 when the Thurmont
Board of Commissioners took the
initiative of having summer band
concerts in theThurmont Memorial
Park, then Mayor Terry Best
appointed me as concert coordinator.
In accepting the position I informed
Mr. Best that I would not only get the
area bands involved in concerts but
would make a very special effort to
obtain some military bands as well.
Mr. Best was quick to respond,
“Good luck, George, with your efforts
in obtaining military bands. They are
hard to come by.”
As editor of the Catoctin
Enterprise, I became associated
with Fort Ritchie, being invited to
their special events, promotions,
retirements, etc. Music for these
events was furnished by the First
United States Army Band, based at
Fort George G. Meade, Maryland.
While visiting Fort Ritchie one day
for a special ceremony, I contacted
the Conductor of the First Army
Band and requested a concert for
Thurmont. Several days after my
request was entered, I received a
confirmation from Commander
Edward A. Greene that the band
would be in Thurmont on Sunday,
June 7, 1987 for a concert in
Memorial Park beginning at 6:00 p.m.
The First United States Army
Band first appeared in Thurmont on
Sunday June 7, 1987 and became a
regular participant in Thurmont’s summer
concert series until 1995, when it was
inactivated. Thurmont was honored to
host the very last public concert of the
First United States Army Band at Catoctin
High School on March 13, 1995.
In August 1991, a unit of the United
States Navy Band, the Sea Chanters,
presented a concert in Memorial Park.
When the First United States Army
Band was inactivated, the 389th Army
Band, stationed at Aberdeen Proving
Ground, provided musical support for
Fort Meade and also became a part of
Thurmont’s concert series for several
years.
Virginia for a concert at Catoctin
High School on February 26, 1997.
This outstanding musical organization
has become the standard by which
other military bands are judged.
Thurmont is indeed very fortunate to
have the Heritage of America Band
as a very active participant in their
concert series. This 60-member band
has a number of individual units...
The Tradewinds Quintet, Heritage
Brass Quintet, Heritage Aire Celtic
Ensemble. and the most recent, the
Heritage “Satellite” Jazz Ensemble.
All of these units have appeared in
concert in Thurmont.
The United States Air Force Heritage
of America Band, based at Langley
played a major role in the musical
life of the citizens of Thurmont.
The Commissioners of Thurmont
outstanding organization.
“No Farms-No Food” and CSA’s
By Michele Cuseo
I recently saw a bumper sticker
that said “No Farms, No Food.” I
could make sense of the meaning
of the bumper sticker but out of
curiosity I looked into it further
by going on a web search. That’s
where I came across the term “CSA.”
Basically, a CSA, Community
Supported Agriculture, is a farm
that is supported by a community
by having the consumer pre-pay a
certain fee in order to benefit from
whatever produce the farmer grows
for that season. The beneficiaries
of a CSA typically pick up a weekly
selection of the season’s freshest
produce from their local farmer, for
example a box or two of fresh corn,
onions, green beans, yellow squash,
tomatoes, and cantaloupes.
Many believe that CSA’s are the
wave of the future for farmers for
their ability to provide quality, fresh
produce for the local population
and a way for farmers to have a
guaranteed income. For a business
that’s at the mercy of weather
conditions, short growing seasons,
insects, animals, competition from
abroad and economic woes, the
United States loses approximately
one million acres of farmland per
year along with the jobs that are
associated with them. Those farms
and related food systems employ
nearly 23 million Americans across
the county.
In order to salvage their farms,
some farmers have revised the way
they market their farm business
using creative solutions such as the
CSA idea. One such farmer, Rick
Hood, owner of Summer Creek Farm
lives in Thurmont and operates a
successful Certified Organic CSA.
So far Rick provides for 42 CSA
customers. His customers currently
get to enjoy organic tomatoes (many
varieties), squash, raspberries,
cantaloupes, cucumbers, basil,
potatoes (many varieties), beans
(many varieties), broccoli, zucchini,
beets, and many more. He also sells
his produce at local farmers markets
in Frederick and Clarksburg. His
produce also shows up on the plates
of food served in the Frederick
restaurants of Café Nola, Acacia and
Volt. He also sells produce to the
Common Market organic grocery
store and Roots Markets.
Rick claims that the CSA doesn’t
solely support his farm financially. In
order to stay afloat Rick also offers
educational classes in subjects like
Organic Gardening, Rain Barrel
Construction, Composting, Drip
Irrigation and how to raise a small
flock of chickens. In addition, Rick
sells rain collection barrels, sells
produce to local groceries and farm
markets, conducts tours of his farm
and reduces costs by using various
forms of alternative energy (biomass,
soy based bio-diesel, using
photo voltaic cells and using rain
barrels to collect rain water to reduce
water usage on the farm).
And, as if that wasn’t enough,
Rick also writes a newsletter,
and is an active member in
many associations like MOFFA
(Maryland Organic Food and
Farming Association) and MCOGC
(Maryland Certified Organic
Growers Cooperative). He has served
on the board of Future Harvest
CASA, board of the Frederick
County Agricultural Business Council
and has a background in engineering
and marketing.
Rick states that running a farm
is exhausting, hard work and yet
very satisfying. Coming from a
farm family, Rick already knew how
much work was involved. Rick says,
“You’re up before dawn and work
till it’s dark. In farming, you have to
love what you do.”

Thurmont Middle’s New Asst. Principal
The staff and students at Thurmont Middle
School are happy to have Marty Rochlin as their new
Assistant Principal. Marty started out his career as
a counselor at Camp Airy in Thurmont, and then
went on to become an elementary and middle school
teacher. He has taught several different subjects, and
enjoys tutoring math. He advanced to the Assistant
Principal position at Crestwood Middle in 2004.
Marty lives in Ellicott City with his wife Pam
and their daughter Lilly. Marty is a big Orioles and
Ravens fan, loves and coaches soccer, and likes to
play a good game of basketball with the school staff
to unwind at the end of a day.
Marty is a “people person.” He earned the
“Clown Fish” award for the past four years at Crestwood. He is excited
to be at Thurmont Middle and has had a warm reception from the staff and
community so far. Marty feels that if he can make a difference with a child to
help their day go better, it is a good day at the office. He believes that solving
problems “makes school better for both students and families.” There of
course will be fires to put out, but he is hoping to do that with a positive
outcome for all involved.
Marty has an open door policy and is excited about the new school year
and is looking forward to meeting and working with the staff, students and
families.
Boy Scout Troop 270 Earn Coin Merit Badge
During the American Legion coin show, Boy Scout Troop 270 took the
opportunity to earn their coin collecting merit badge. Leader, Dwayne Snyder,
set up the training with dealer and collector, Alex Kidwell, of Thurmont. The
boys learned about what coins are made of, why they become valuable, where
they are printed, how the coins were started and much more.
The training was exciting with speakers Alex Kidwell, collector and dealer
of early American copper coins, who taught them about the history of the
coins; Bob Pletla, a collector and dealer of bank notes (foreign printed bills),
taught the boys how to ‘read’ a bill and put value on it; Steve Elsworth, Ret.
Col from USArmy and one of the authors of the Red Book (the manual for
coin collectors), talked about when he was a Scout in Utah and how he became
a collector and dealer. Col. Elsworth also showed the boys the very first coin
printed in the USA and shared today’s value.
I enjoy teaching and love being with
the kids. I want my office to be a
sanctuary for them. I want them to
feel always welcome to come in and see
me, the parents too.”
Our first item is a follow-up of an
appraisal on an item that was submitted
during our appraisal program back in
February at the Thurmont Regional
Library. Mr. M. and his wife brought
in an Epiphone Gibson Les Paul model
electric guitar. He had purchased the
guitar used in 1983.
During the program, I had an initial
look at the guitar and told them I could
not give them a fair appraisal of the
guitar without further research. So, after
asking him to contact me through this
column several months ago, I was finally
able to photograph the guitar and get the
information I needed for the research.
The first thing I did was to seek out an
expert in the field of string instruments.
Mr. Lou Corsi
from Harrisburg,
Pennsylvania
is very
knowledgeable
about the Gibson
brand and
the Epiphone
significance.
When I had originally asked Mr. Corsi
if he could assist me with the value
on a Gibson Les Paul electric
guitar, I failed to mention the fact
that it had the Epiphone name
on the top as well. It gets a bit
complicated as to the variances of
the two companies, but the end
result is that the Epiphone product
is a more economical line of guitar
products. Mr. M ‘s guitar had
the original pickups replaced and
according to Mr. Corsi, the back battery
storage area could have been enlarged to
accommodate the different after-market
pickups.
After a lengthy conversation regarding
Mr. M’s guitar, Mr. Lou gave me a value
of $350.00-$400.00. I did a back search
on the eBay website and found 53 similar
guitars recently offered. Several were
listed at $550.00, but none of them sold
Specializing in
since 1989
301-416-0017
for that price. I found 15 similar guitars
that did sell in the $200.00-$400.00
range. So, after a rather lengthy and
educational process, I will go with Mr.
Corsi’s value on your Epiphone Gibson
Les Paul Electric guitar
of $350.00-$400.00.
Thank you Mr. M. for
your participation in our
Appraisal Day at the
Thurmont Library and
your patience with my
efforts!
Our next appraisal
comes from Jim who
writes, “I found this in the woods
behind my parents’ house. It’s in perfect
condition. It says “Water” on one side
and “Juice” on the other. It is marked
with ounces on the other sides. I looked
on-line and think it is Depression era.
What is it worth?”
Well Jim, I faintly recall seeing a
bottle similar to the one you pictured in
my Grandmother’s refrigerator. I believe
that it held prune juice. I did an internet
search to back up my sometimes poor
memory and I found several. They came
in clear, green, and brown glass colors.
Your bottle originally had a paper label
which gave the contents of the bottle.
Your bottle is missing the metal screw lid,
making its value approximately $10.00.
Thank you for the submission!
Here are some of the prices seen in
the local area: crock with a man’s face
painted in cobalt blue-$23,000.00;
John Bell four gallon crock with blue
decoration-$550.00; Van Briggle
Art pottery vase “Despondency”
approximately 16” in height with a
reclining nude around the top-$500.00;
Samuel Irvine crock with wreath
blue decoration-$900.00; Cowden
& Wilcox Man in the Moon blue
decorated crock-$2300.00; unsigned
four gallon jug with cobalt blue swan
decoration-$8250.00; early heavily
burled walnut dough bowl-$2700.00;
Winchester model 1884 rifle-octagon
barrel-.25-20 caliber-$625.00; Victorian
iron fence-approximately 40 feet with a
gate-$425.00.
Tiger Roar Lionhead on Facebook
By Carie Stafford
I am Tiger Roar Lionhead. I am a
sweet male exotic Lionhead rabbit.
I am one year old and considered
an adult to my bunny friends. I am
Elizabeth Hoover’s best buddy. She
calls me Tiger. I call her Liz. She can
hear me ROAR!
Being a Lionhead means that I am
small in size. I weigh about three
pounds. I am lion-like because of
my beautiful fluffy tan and white fur
around my head. It forms my ‘lion’s
mane.’
Although I am very shy, I am
active. I take walks with Liz, she
keeps me on a leash to keep me safe.
When I go on walks, I try to hide
away in the jungle of tomato plants
that my Granmim (Liz’s mom, Diana)
keeps in the yard.
If no one is looking when I play in
my yard I will climb into the garden
to hide. Liz just bought me my
favorite toy, a tube and tent. Now
I can be adventurous without being
scared.
I get brushed two to three times a
day, but I am a neat-freak, so I clean
myself all the time.
Since I can’t speak like a human
or bark like a dog, I communicate by
Pictured above, Tiger Roar Lionhead is shown
being held by his best buddy, Liz Hoover of
Emmitsburg. Below, Tiger is playing.
the way I snuggle. Liz can tell when
I’m happy or scared. She knows that
my thumping means, “NO!”
I even have my own Facebook
friends on the computer. I have 130
friends. Most of my friends are
bunnies. Liz says that the best thing
about my Facebook friends is that
she can connect to other rabbit moms
and dads to learn about helpful
tips. Being an exotic rabbit makes
me special so having other exotic
friends is a great asset. Liz likes to
share new photos of me and talk
about all the strange creatures that
roamed outside my house and yard
on Facebook. Me, I like to keep up to
date on what is going on in the rabbit
world.
A little Mystery
By Valerie Nusbaum
A few weeks ago I was sitting at
my makeup table getting ready to
go out when Randy walked into the
bedroom. He absently picked up the
remote and turned on the television.
Then he sat down on the bed and
started reading the newspaper, all the
while telling me about what he’d been
doing outside. He’s talented and can
do several things at the same time.
While I was putting on my
mascara, I listened to his story and
then I told him that I’d completely
forgotten to put on eye makeup
the day before when we’d gone out
to dinner. He said that he hadn’t
noticed. He hadn’t noticed???
“Do you ever actually look at
me?” I asked. I was all set to let him
have it.
“Yes, and you’re always beautiful,”
was his answer.
I sputtered a little and turned back
to the mirror. He makes it hard to
argue with him. Oh, I know he’s full
of it and I protested feebly, but the
man is good. What woman doesn’t
want to hear something like that from
her significant other, even if she knows
it’s a crock?
That conversation got me thinking
about how well we know each
other. I decided to find out if we’re
compatible according to the leading
authorities on love and marriage. I’m
referring to Cosmopolitan magazine,
of course. There was a quiz in an old
issue that I felt sure we’d pass with
flying colors.
The first question asked us
to specify what size and type of
underwear our partner prefers. I, of
course, listed the size, type, brand and
color that Randy likes.
He grinned proudly, and
pronounced, “White. You like white
ones, right?”
“Sometimes I do,” I answered,
“but do you know what size I wear?”
He scratched his head and said,
“Do they come in different sizes?
Are they waist sizes like men’s
happily ever after
underwear?”
I realized then that in the nearly
twenty years we’ve been together,
Randy has never bought underwear
for me. On the other hand, he hasn’t
bought underwear for himself either.
I think he thinks that it just magically
appears when he needs new stuff.
Not that he ever throws the old stuff
away. I periodically find a pair in the
laundry with so many holes in them
that I can’t imagine what purpose
they could serve, especially when you
consider where the holes are located.
Whenever that happens, I’m forced to
bury them at the bottom of the trash
can in the laundry room in order to
get rid of them.
It’s the same thing with socks.
He says that his stuff just starts to
feel comfortable and soft and then
it’s gone. I know he suspects me of
doing something because I’ve seen
him pawing through his drawers (no
pun intended) looking for something
he obviously can’t find, and then he’ll
give me a look that says, “I know
you’re behind this.”
We finished the quiz, and
discovered what we probably already
knew. I pay attention to some things
and he pays attention to others. I
know all of Randy’s favorite movies.
He doesn’t know any of mine, but he
does know what music I like. I think
he knows that my favorite flowers are
white roses, but he still buys me pink
carnations because that’s what he got
for me when we were dating.
Maybe it’s best not to know
everything about each other.
Sometimes a little something left
unsaid or unknown can help keep us
from becoming too familiar. I know
it’s true with us. I don’t really want to
know how those holes got there, and
we’re both better off if Randy doesn’t
solve the mystery of the disappearing
underwear.
A “Heartfelt” Message from Rosemary
McDermott
Many of you are aware that
our friend, Rosemary McDermott,
has temporarily relocated to the
Philadelphia area while she is
recovering from a heart transplant.
The transplant was necessary because
of a heart condition caused by a
gene inherited from her mother.
Rosemary’s mother died from the
condition but the gene was passed on
to SEVEN of her FIFTEEN children,
including Rosemary. The family
cardiologist from Johns Hopkins
Hospital, Dr. Traill, maintains a
huge file on the extensive study he
has conducted on the McDermott
family. As the eldest of the children,
Rosemary was determined to prove
to her younger brothers and sisters
that with the advances in the medical
field, it is possible to correct this
condition via a transplant and live a
full and normal life. When I asked
Rosemary’s permission to share her
experience with her friends, she
offered the following testimony:
“It was the day before
Thanksgiving, 2008. The courtroom
was hushed as we awaited the Judge’s
verdict. My client sat next to me
sweating. And then, relief washed
over us removing all fears as the
Judge ruled in our favor.
Eight days later I found myself in
the intensive care unit of Frederick
Memorial Hospital fighting to live. My
cold had turned into a vicious form of
pneumonia that attacked my alreadydefective
heart causing a serious heart
attack. My cardiologist from Johns
Hopkins gave me the dire news:
“Start your good-byes or consider a
heart transplant.” I didn’t hesitate. I
wanted to live. There was too much
left to do. “A heart transplant,” I
responded, starting one of the most
exciting adventures of my life.
Dr. Traill decided that the best
place for a heart transplant was
the Hospital of the University of
Pennsylvania, and he set up an
immediate appointment for me. I
had three weeks to get all my affairs
in order, and relocate to Philadelphia.
A Higher Power was with me as I
found the right person to manage
my law firm, and the right couple to
take care of my home and my little
herd of goats during my absence. A
friend drove me to Johns Hopkins
to meet with my cardiologist since
I was unable to drive. King Lion
George Bolling wanted to know
what the Lions could do to help me
with the move. They helped me more
than they know, both spiritually and
materially.
On January 16, 2009 my brother
and sister drove me to the Hospital
of the University of Pennsylvania,
where they immediately admitted
me. Here I was in the intensive care
unit of a strange hospital being tested
from head to feet to see if I was a
candidate for a heart transplant. ,
After a meeting of the cardiology
team I was put on a priority list. To
keep my heart going the doctors put
me on some intravenous that made
me sound like Darth Vader. I had to
stay in the hospital for two weeks to be
sure the medicine would work. It did,
so the team allowed me to stay at my
sister’s house while awaiting a donor.
I had to follow all kinds of rules
since my immune system was low.
No associating with children, no
being around animals, no eating
sushi, no digging in the dirt, no
swimming in lakes or ponds, no
shaking hands or hugging. But the
hardest part was awaiting a donor. I
had a pager and had to be ready to get
to the hospital within an hour. Every
time the phone rang, my heart jumped.
Three and a half weeks later we
were sitting around the kitchen table
and the call came. A very young
man in West Virginia was killed in
an accident, and his heart appears
to be a perfect match. I was to be
at the hospital within an hour. With
an excitement I never felt before, I
went to the hospital with my brotherin-law
and sister. The traffic on a
Friday night in Philadelphia was
bumper to bumper. Everyone at the
hospital was waiting for me, even the
security guard.
