COVER STORY
Lethbridge celebrates Canada Day
By Jeff Wiebe
For the Lethbridge Journal
As Lethbridge prepares for a flood of red
and white flag waving ahead of Canada Day,
many local residents will be reflecting on the
meaning of their Canadian citizenship while
they enjoy the day’s festivities.
While almost everyone knows about the
Canada Day fireworks in the park, there are
several other lesser-known events going on
around town, and the Journal encourages
you to celebrate Lethbridge’s celebration of
Canada Day.
If sports are your thing, Spitz Stadium at
Henderson Park is the place to be. The Lethbridge
Sport Council is hosting a family
sports day; baseball fans will get a chance to
play with the pros from 10-11:30 a.m. as the
Lethbridge Bulls take to the field to play ball
with the community. Later, the sport council
will host a series of sporting events for the
entire family, allowing locals to participate in
some sports they otherwise wouldn’t.
“It’s providing a free opportunity for families
to try a bunch of different sports, allowing
them to do things together rather than
dropping a kid off at one sport and having
to run off to do another one,” says Susan Eymann,
executive director of the council, adding
that while sports days typically require
registration, the July 1 first events will be
open to all without registration.
Stations will be setup around the stadium
from noon to 1:30 and will represent different
sports, including netball. Eymann
describes it as a bit like basketball with no
backboard and no dribbling, making it more
of a passing sport that is perfect for crosstraining.
Other sports events around the area will
include dragon boat ride alongs courtesy of
Lethbridge College for those who have always
been curious what it’s like to travel in
one of the mythical boats.
In addition, Lethbridge Immigrant Services
will be holding a soccer game in celebration
of the beautiful game and its fans during
the World Cup.
Jared Sholt, a local post-secondary stu-
dent, says he plans to celebrate the day taking
in some local music in Galt Gardens.
“I don’t know about a lot of the stuff going
on the city, but I’ve been to the shows in the
park before, and they always put on a pretty
good show,” he explains, “and it’s always nice
to see some local talent on display.”
Galt Gardens will be bursting with local
music all day, featuring artists like Treeline,
Alyssa McQuaid, Matt Robinson, and Doublejack
playing from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission
is free, and if temperatures rise too
high, there are fountains conveniently located
throughout the park.
More great Canadian music will be featured
on Lethbridge’s campus-community
radio station CKXU, which will hold a special
countdown of the top 100 Canadian songs of
all time as voted by members of CKXU. The
station solicited ideas from the public for a
couple weeks, asking listeners to submit their
top 10 songs, and in keeping with the station’s
independent mandate, it will shy away from
Top 40 tunes. But Jorden Ager, station manager
and executive director of the station, says
tracks from legends like Neil Young will be
unavoidable.
“There’s a good mix of songs you’ll know
from back in the day by Canadian artists, and
stuff you’ve never heard before,” he explains,
adding that he and other station staff have
sifted through more than 450 songs to arrive
at the top 100.
“I’m sure that after this, people won’t agree
with some of the list, so they’ll have to vote
next year,”
Other local music will be showcased at 7
p.m. at Henderson Lake Park, as the Lethbridge
Community Gold Band takes the stage
for a concert.
While in the Henderson area, there will
also be plenty to do at Nikka Yuko Japanese
Galt Gardens entryway, one of the many venues for Canada Day celebrations in Lethbridge
Gardens, the attraction offers Lethbians a
chance to take in a bit of Japanese culture
with several different activities.
Things will kick off at 11 a.m. with paper
lantern decorating and continue throughout
the day with other activities like origami lessons,
calligraphy, and storytelling. Admission
is $7 for adults, $5 for seniors and $4 for
adults.
Regardless of how residents decide to celebrate
the day, many will be considerate of
how fortunate they are to live in Canada, and
they won’t be alone in admiring the Great
White North – according to a recent survey
conducted by the Historica-Dominion Institute,
more than half of all people surveyed in
the world’s leading 24 economies said they
would pack up and move to Canada if they
could.
Which is as good a reason as any to celebrate
this magnificent day.

Summertime, and the livin’ is easy
Free Classifieds CALL 403-320-8936
Living in Lethbridge has its benefits and drawbacks like any other city. High winds, unpredictable storms, flash floods,
and growing sprawl no doubt contribute to its drawbacks. The beauty of Lethbridge in the summer time, though, is undeniable.
The warm air, the cooling breezes and the incredible sunshine make Lethbridge summers something people cherish and
hold onto during those long winter cold snaps. The bevy of events happening, and the vibrancy of the streets create a community
that can be lost in bigger cities and colder months.
Henderson Lake is one of the best places to while away an afternoon. The cool shade of the trees, the breeze coming off the
lake, the pool, and the Nikka Yuko Japanese Gardens give anyone something to look forward to and enjoy.
Still though, one of the best things about Henderson, and Lethbridge in general in the summer is the people.
The streets come alive. The sunshine draws people out of their homes and offices to enjoy lunch in the park, or walks
downtown. Families, students, and seniors all come together to revel in the outdoors.
Small, pleasant conversation is made as people pass each other, and relationships are formed through shared experiences.
With so many summer activities available, it is impossible to not bump into someone from the distant, or not so distant
past. These are the moments remembered, and cherished. Like the crops that surround the city, communities grow in the
sunshine.
Lethbridge summers are about friends meeting on a patio for after work beverages, community gardens full of thriving
home grown fruits and vegetables, and children running around in an outdoor pool.
While there are times Lethbridge can seem like a series of isolated spaces, the beautiful part of summer is that people actively
try and break those bonds: joining another group floating in Popson Park, stepping out of a comfort zone and striking
up a conversation with a perfect stranger, even sitting down next to someone you only coincidentally know at a café, or on a
patio. It is amazing the bravery that Lethbridge summers give people.
It is something to behold, really, the desire to re-connect after long, cold winters. The belief in the goodness of others
returns, and trust is developed and reseeded. This is no better exemplified than at the Canada Day fireworks in Henderson
Lake Park.
Thousands of people, crowded together on blankets and lawn chairs. People wandering back and forth, chatting and visiting.
The sense of community is amazing. People really care about each other and about this city.
Summers here are why University of Lethbridge, and Lethbridge College students stay in the city all year round. The river
bottom entices those eager to swim in the cold, fresh river. The Frisbee golf parks, and proximity to Waterton and other
national parks create the perfect feeling that one gets in the summer.
The feeling of freedom, and of community is indescribable. It comes with the bon fires, and barbeques, the summer events
and sport games. It is quite possibly the warm weather, the increase in vitamin D, and the relief of a high affliction: seasonal
affective disorder. Or perhaps it is the inherent value in all Canadians: to enjoy the sun while it lasts.
Regardless of the motivation, summer here is something to behold and enjoy. It beats most other cities for sheer levels
of sunshine, and for community spirit. Coulee hikes, and river bottoms can be enjoyed for weeks on end. Spilling into the
night air after a roof-raising concert. Enjoying a New West Production or a performance by the Lethbridge Symphony and
walking home.
Summer is many things to many people, but the community it builds and sustains is truly what keeps this city alive and
well.
Cup fever
I don’t think there’s a better - looking
trophy in the world of sport than the Stanley
Cup. And I don’t think there’s a better tradition
in sport than allowing each player of the
winning team to bring it to their hometown
for a day.
Thanks to Kris Versteeg of the Chicago
Black Hawks who was an impact player in this
year’s playoffs, the Cup will be here in Lethbridge
on July 3. As you might expect, every
member of the Lethbridge media wants some
time with Kris and I thank him for taking a
moment to talk to me.
Not lost in the frenzy that goes with winning
a championship at 24 years of age, Kris
remembers how important his family and his
supporters were in his hockey development
here in Lethbridge. He says he is still very
proud to call Lethbridge his hometown and
constantly hypes the city to his friends.
While there have been a number of Lethbridge-born
players who have their name
inscribed on Lord Stanley’s mug, Kris along
with Vic Stasiuk, would have played the most
playoff games. And to take it even further,
Kris is the only Lethbridge-born “rapper”
with his name on the Cup.
At press time Kris says there’s not a better
city to play hockey in than Chicago and hopes
that he will always be a Black Hawk. He’d also
like a shot at playing for Canada either in the
Olympics or in the World Championships.
Doh!!
From the “Why does my brain do that?”
department: Last week I was doing a couple
of interviews on Scene & Heard and struggled
with the introductions.
For some reason instead of introducing
John Paul Smith from the band “Sleeping
With Tuesday”, I kept calling them “Sleeping
Til Tuesday.”
There’s a totally different connotation
there. And while introducing Southern Alberta
Art Gallery Artist Trudi Smith, I instead
called her Trudy Young.
To my defense, I think my brain flashed
back to the days of Razzle Dazzle when I
would watch co-host Trudy Young as she
Making a difference
A lot of organizations in the city do a lot
of great work for the community and often
don’t get as much publicity as they should get.
This week the Freemasons of Lethbridge had
their Higher Education bursary presentations
where nine kids from the city and surround-
Last year Mike Spencer of the Geomatic
which raised over $2000 for local athletes
This year’s recipient is Free The Children,
In those 15 years the organization has
built over 600 schools as well as generated
many other positive initiatives.
peroge, the giant pinto bean, and the giant beaver
The bay of Fundy, Niagara Falls, the rockies,
the Cabot Trail, and the Drumheller dinosaur
dig all made it on the list and that is just the
tip of the iceberg that floats past Newfoundland
like a slow motion mountain of white.
The seven wonders could have easily been
extended to be the hundred wonders of Canada.
The plains of Abraham, the forts built for
the war of 1812, the museums that dot this
country paying homage to the explorers, settlers,
pioneers and most importantly to the native
Canadians who first called this place home.
This compilation by the CBC is what the
CBC was created for. We got full bang for our
taxpayer dollars out of that exploration of our land.
For a network that spends way too much
time airing British mysteries, sci-fi shows and
highlights of comedy festivals it was nice to see
them spending the government money they
receive on a project as noble and proud as this.
The unfortunate thing is the American reality
shows, sitcoms and dramas have taken over
most of our TV viewing and most Canadians
don’t even look to see what’s on the CBC; fearing
it might be another episode of Coronation
Street. So when the final special aired virtually
no one saw it.
Leaving people to just go on with their lives
forever wondering what are the seven wonders
of Canada.
C O M M E N T
The Wonders Of Canada
This country has many icons, including the
national railroad that connected this great land
mass from coast to coast that first allowed our
grandparents - grandparents to settle out west.
They shot straight, lived straight and rode
like the wind. They had bravery in their blood
and hardiness beyond measure. They broke
broncos before breakfast and branded longhorns
until dinner. The evenings were spent sitting
on the front stoop counting their calluses
until fatigue overwhelmed them into the realm
of the sandman.
The government at the time, looking to
instill a national identity through a cultural
unity, created another national icon: the CBC.
First its radio beginnings, then CBC television.
The idea that you could press a button and see
something happening three thousand miles
away was astonishing.
The CBC-TV network went on the air in the
fall of 1952. Canada’s first TV buyers splurged
on units that sold for $429 dollars back when
the average working person earned $3,500 a year.
This created even more national icons:
Hockey Night in Canada, Don Messers Jubilee,
The Friendly Giant and Ann Murray variety
specials, Ann Murray Christmas specials, in
short, Ann Murray.
Three years ago the CBC conducted a survey
to find the seven wonders of Canada. They
could have been anything; food, a road, a park,
a mountain range, a river, a trophy, it really
didn’t matter.
Then they narrowed the list down to the top
fifty or so and let people vote online. Now while
I am sometimes irked at the waste of money
the CBC can be, I think this was a brilliant idea.
Highlighting the myriad of fantastic places
this country has to offer. Just one glance at the
list that was compiled, and you quickly realize
you will never need to leave this country to go
on vacation again.
One of the big problems facing Canadians is
getting to places so far away. Especially when a
trip to the national park in the Northwest Territories
is likely to drain nine tanks of gas on a
one - way trip. I’ll need to mortgage my home
to visit that one.
However, if time and money permits, there
are some extraordinary things to see in every
corner of Canada. The funny thing is that the
CBC’s list of the ‘wonders’ didn’t even include
any of the giant things we’ve built: the giant
Niagara Falls, the real wonder there is why
does the water never run out?
Pier 21, the place in Nova Scotia where a lot
of immigrants who made this country great,
first landed.
The Rockies, and they don’t mean the Sylvester
Stallone movies.
The Igloo, with global warming, the premiums
for a home insurance policy against
melting will be outrageous.
The Canoe, although really how can the canoe
make the list without the paddle because
you apparently don’t want to be up the creek
without one even if you have a canoe.
Old Quebec City, and the fact that it’s still
standing kind of makes it a wonder.
Prairie skies, they are breathtaking, when
there not pouring rain of course.
COLON ENZYME, LIQUID MENO & FORTIFY PROBIOTICS
Today we are introducing a new enzyme product, one in which is designed
to actually promote healthy colon function. This is called “Colon Clenzyme”
and its benefits are numerous. We already know that a healthy colon is essential
to good health, don’t we? Colon cleansing and detoxifying helps by
preventing a build up of poorly digested, toxic, or putrefying wastes. Food
that is poorly digested or undigested begins to ferment, decay, purify, and
turn rancid in the colon. Undigested waste products that are not efficiently
eliminated are also harmful to the intestinal tract. Some of the Colon Clenzyme
benefits are 1) helps maintain intestinal regularity, 2) improves digestion
and the absorption of nutrients, 3) lessens the symptoms of indigestion,
including gas, bloating, and abdominal discomfort, 4) supports a healthy
balance of gut bacteria, and 5) normalizes the inflammatory response. How
cool is that? This product contains a unique blend of 6 enzymes designed
to break down food and release nutrients, resulting in optimal nutrient
assimilation. The special enzyme in question here is “Chitosanase” that
breaks down chitin, an important part of the structure of the cell wall of fungi,
including Candida albicans. This can help prevent the overgrowth of this
potentially harmful pathogen. Together, these enzymes provide comprehensive
coverage for digesting food and improving the absorption of nutrients,
leading to increased energy and improved health, and helping to reduce
the incidence of developing disease. Colon Clenzyme is considered safe
and suitable for long-term use for individuals of all ages. Capsules may be
opened and sprinkled on foods for children or individuals who have difficulty
For What it’s Worth
Fake NHL awards
By now, hockey fans are already well
aware who won the NHL’s major hardware
for the 2009-2010 season. Recently, in Las
Vegas, the loop held its annual Awards. In
what was a major upset, at least for Battle of
the Blades fans, it was hosted by Jay Mohr
and not Ron MacLean.
So, Vancouver’s Henrik Sedin was named
Most Valuable Player and won the Hart Trophy.
Leaving me to wonder: how does this
not throw a wedge into his relationship with
twin brother Daniel?
In recent years, the NHL has added
awards like the Rocket Richard Award for
the league’s top goal scorer and the Mark
Messier Award for leadership. Anyways, we
all know about the Norris, Lady Bing, Calder
and Vezina trophies. But there are several
awards that were handed out earlier in the
day that didn’t make the broadcast.
Thankfully, my sources within the NHL
gave me the list. Here are some of the highlights:
The Hartford Whalers Award
It has been awhile since we last saw the
Mighty Whale, as the franchise moved to
Carolina in 1997. Hartford was a pretty good
WHA club, winning the Avco World Trophy
in 1973. However, in 18 NHL seasons, the
Whalers were the definition of mediocrity,
winning just one Adams Division pennant
and one playoff series.
In that spirit, the Columbus Blue Jackets
are trying to pick up where Hartford left
off. Two seasons ago the expansion franchise
was much improved as it made the playoffs
for the first time.
However, the Jackets seemed to take a
step back this past campaign, missing out
on the Stanley Cup tournament. Despite an
all-world talent like Rick Nash; several years
of poor drafting, and the inability to draw
premier free agents has the Jackets looking
ke
FOR WHAT IT’S
WORTH
M A R T Y B A C E D A
like the Whalers—without the catchy theme
song.
Lanny McDonald Cup
This could go out to the NHLer with
the best wrist shot, but instead it’s for, yes,
the best moustache. With the emergence of
Movember as an annual event, the ol’ push
broom is undergoing a real renaissance.
While many players just kept them for
that month, others are rocking the Tom
Selleck year-round. Hands down, this year’s
Lanny goes to George Parros. The Anaheim
enforcer sports his 365 days a year, and looks
like he belongs as much in Dodge City circa
1880 as he does on the ice.
Kyle McLaren Trophy
This goes out to the NHL’s most unsung
defenseman. McLaren was the epitome of
this. In 12 NHL seasons, the Coaldale raised
rearguard never gained much notoriety for
his steady play.
In a close race, this year’s recipient is
Mark Giordano.
It’s easy to understand why the Toronto
native may go unnoticed. On the Calgary
Flames, he had the likes of Jay Bouwmeester,
Robyn Regehr and, for most of the season,
Dion Phaneuf garnering most of the pub.
But, by the end of the campaign, it was Giordano
who was logging the most ice-time for
Brent Sutter in all key situations.
Not bad for a guy who was playing in Russia
just 3 years ago.
Rocky Balboa-Apollo Creed Bowl
The RACB goes to the best fight of the
season. This goes to Vancouver’s Rick Rypien
and then Calgary Flame Brandon Prust. The
two welterweights are no strangers, as they
fought 3 times last season.
It was their first scrap in a January game at
GM Place that was the best. High paced, with
both men throwing with both hands, made
for an entertaining tilt.
Robby Ftorek Sweater Award
The former Los Angeles, Boston and New
Jersey bench boss actually posted a decent
winning percentage in 6 NHL seasons. Yet,
he was twice fired guiding first-place teams.
However, I’ll always remember his LA days
and his fantastically bad sweaters.
Much like those threads, wonderfully outdated,
is Pat Quinn. Now, there is no denying
Quinn has had a very good coaching career.
But, for the Edmonton Oilers to tab the then
66-year-old to guide a struggling franchise
very much appeared to be a mistake.
Yes, the Oilers were ravaged by injury, and
there was not much talent on hand to begin
with. However, if Quinn was blameless, then
he would have returned for a second season
in the Capital.
Instead, he was moved to an advisory role
with the club, and was replaced by Tom Renney.
Really, it’s for the best. Quinn working an
NHL Bench best belongs in our memories,
not in the present.
SWLL takes
Montana
tournament
By Steven Florendine
For the Lethbridge Journal
The SWLL 9-10 year old All-Star baseball
team won the Choteau, MT Junior
Classic. The team went 5 – 0 in the tournament
by scoring 85 runs and only allowing
10. They won their semi-final game 8 – 0
against the Helena Sluggers with Raleigh
Ferby pitching a fantastic 1 – hit complete
game.
In the final game, the team battled
back from a 4 – 0 deficit after the top of the
first inning, to win in the bottom of the 6th
after scoring 3 runs.
The SWLL All-stars beat the defending
tournament champions from Belgrade,
MT, 7 – 6.
The boys never got down despite being
behind 4 – 0 after the first inning. They
battled the entire game continuously chipping
away at the Belgrade lead, with each
and every player making valuable contributions:
truly a team victory.
The team acted with class the entire
weekend. After winning the game against
the Helena Sluggers, several Helena parents
commented on how well the Lethbridge
boys played and more importantly,
how classy they were in the win.
Several parents from different Montana
Championship victory over Belgrade.
Special congratulations to the entire
team and coaching staff: Ryan Ferby, Don
Henley and Jennifer Penner.
The team’s next tournament is in Airdrie
The Kokanee
Glacier offers
the perfect
golf course
By Jeff Wiebe
For the Lethbridge Journal
Nestled between the Purcell and Selkirk
mountain ranges of the central Kootenays is
a piece of golfing heaven only a few hours’
drive from Lethbridge.
The Kokanee Springs Golf Resort lies
on the shores of Kootenay Lake and seems
carved from the very wilderness itself. It’s
been the crown jewel of Kootenay golf courses
for more than 40 years, making it one of
the first mountain-designed golf courses in
the area.
“It’s really a spectacular area,” says Greg
Garbula, vice president of the resort.
“It’s an extra couple hours to get here, but
that’s what makes it so special. If we were
closer to any of our main markets, we’d be
just one of those regular golf courses. We’re
very unique.”
The course was designed to perfectly
complement its surroundings and allow the
natural beauty of the environment to shine
through - every hole features panoramic
views of the Kokanee Glacier. This special location
has remained pristine over the years,
offering golfers a different experience from
courses in the Okanogan or Columbia Valley areas.
“We have people who religiously make
their Kokanee trek year after year. It’s a real
pilgrimage,” says Garbula, adding that most
of the resort’s 30,000 annual visitors are return
customers.
The 18-hole course, with its rolling greens
and pristine landscape, offers something for
all golfers, regardless of skill level. The pro
shop has a variety of men’s and women’s apparel
available, with more than fourteen
brands to choose from. As well, CPGA pros
are always on hand to help you improve your
swing with private lessons.
If your visit to the resort seems all too
brief, you even have the option of buying a
place of your own at one of the resort’s newlyopened
developments.
“It’s really starting to shape into a beautiful
recreational retirement area,” says Garbula.
Clear Hearing with the help of VIVID SPEECH
By Editorial Staff
For the Lethbridge Journal
Hearing loss is the third most common
problem faced by baby boomers today and
can significantly reduce a person’s quality
of life. It can restrict and inhibit a person’s
ability to interact with others, prevent them
from hearing vital information, cause misunderstandings,
depression, isolation and may
even shorten life expectancy. Most hearing
losses can be effectively treated with digital
amplification. However, because the onset of
hearing loss tends to be gradual, the key to effective
treatment and rehabilitation depends
on identifying hearing loss in the early stages
and accepting treatment options including
hearing devices.
One of the most common complaints that
hearing device users have is understanding
speech while in noise. This is the most challenging
and demanding listening environment
for hearing device users. NuEar listened
to this complaint and was able to develop a
new hearing device that is able to make
speech more audible even when noise is present
using its innovative noise reduction and
speech preservation system specifically designed
to maintain speech understanding in
noise and reduce listening effort. This device
is the latest hearing technology available.
Another great feature of the VIVID
SPEECH device is its ability to reduce the annoyance
of wind. This is especially important
in Southern Alberta as wind noise is a major
concern for hearing aid users.
NuEar has the industry-leading feedback
cancellation system that virtually eliminates
buzzing and whistling and this feature is standard
on the VIVID SPEECH device. This enables
the user to be much more comfortable
and confident while wearing their device. The
other benefit of this feedback system is the
practitioner is able to make the devices much
smaller and more discrete hearing devices
that are barely visible.
There are different levels of technology
available. Everyone has different needs from
their hearing devices and therefore it is very
important to have a good relationship with
your Hearing Practitioner in order to know
which level would benefit the user the most.
Whether it is best-in-class features, a beautifully
designed look or both – with NuEar,
there is a hearing device to best suit your life-
style and hearing needs.
NuEar’s VIVID SPEECH is exclusively
available at Lethbridge Hearing Centre, located
The Owl Acoustic Lounge opens its doors to Lethbridge
By Jennifer Prosser
For the Lethbridge Journal
Genuine atmosphere with great food,
plenty on tap, and excellent tunes is really all
Lethbridge could ask for.
For Steven Foord, the well respected comanager
of the now former Henotic and a
fixture in the Lethbridge music scene, and
Mel Dominguez, former head chef at Henotic,
opening a new place for music and food
lovers to come together is the perfect answer.
The Owl Acoustic Lounge celebrated
its grand opening Saturday, June 26th with
friends, family and musicians. Nosh and libations
were enjoyed to the stripped down,
acoustic folk stylings of Hank and Lily.
The flattering lighting, the top – line
sound system, and the bright venue offered
a perfect place for this amazing duo, not to
mention the perfect atmosphere for an enjoyable
evening.
The Owl Acoustic Lounge is a very different
sort of venue then Lethbridge has seen
previously, and this difference is what Steve
hopes will lead to its success. First and foremost,
it is about promoting the local music scene.
Foord has been a long time participant
in Lethbridge’s music scene, and he believes
that here and now is the pinnacle, that the
scene is at a high point unseen before. Of
course, this is due to the people who have
worked tirelessly to promote Lethbridge and
southern Alberta, and to open it up for all
genres not just the well - known folk acts.
“I’m really passionate about the music
scene here, I want people to see what I see in
it”, he explains. Foord credits Jason, former
owner of Henotic, and Paul Lawton, founder
of Mammoth Cave Music Festival, for a good
deal of the growth in Lethbridge over the
past few years.
At the Owl, he wants to bring Lethbridge’s
homegrown talent to the ears of folks who
may not venture into The Slice, or into the
Wolfs Den. Instead of competing with those
venues, and all others, the Owl Acoustic
Lounge will compliment them.
It is meant to offer a more casual style of
music consumption. Think the intimate atmosphere
of MTV unplugged with upscale
beverages, and great food.
The shows will be earlier, starting at 7pm
and ending around 10pm. The music will be
softer, allowing conversation to ebb and flow
to the melody. The artists will be all acoustic
based, or at least acoustic modified, and they
will offer something for all ears.
Foord has set an expectation he is determined
to live up to. Friday and Saturday
nights offer live music for the patrons,
and not a house band. Touring bands, local
bands, just starting out bands; Foord believes
in first and second chances and the value of
sheer talent.
Owl Acoustic Lounge will also feature a
designated, permanent merchandise table
where patrons can purchase local music,
merch from touring acts that have passed
through and locally produced art.
Steve loves the idea of continuing the
Henotic tradition of featuring local artists as
the Owl’s decor. He is also interested in setting
up small portfolios for each artist showcased
to enable patrons to familiarize themselves
with them. This will hopefully lead to
more art sales and an even greater support of
Lethbridge’s artist community.
When discussing Henotic, his inspiration
in many ways, Steve acknowledges its
influence. “Realistically, I have no shame in
comparing (the Owl) to Henotic. It feels like
it opened a lot of doors.” He is sure to remind
Lethbridge though that, “its going to be its
own animal.”
With the aspiration to become a go - to
place for music, food, and drinks, Foord has
no shortages of high goals. Goals he believes
Lethbridge will deliver on. His faith in the
city is compelling.
Lethbridge is known for not always supporting
its own. The nickname, “last minute
Lethbridge” is all too true and discouraging to
those taking a risk on a new act or a large endeavor.
The Owl is truly an animal of a different
nature though, and with the promise of
great food, drinks, and live music it will no
doubt become a favourite spot for many.
Foords amazing ability to anticipate
people’s needs, and Dominguez’s fantastic
fare will be the keys to making the Owl a
success. If Foords excitement and passion is
any indicator, he will not be satisfied until it
is anything but.
The Norland turns one hundred and
everyone is invited
By Lisa Doerksen
For the Lethbridge Journal
One of Lethbridge’s grandest historic
sites will celebrate its birthday in high style
July 4th, and the entire community is invited
to the party.
The Norland, an historic Victorian-style
mansion just east of Lethbridge, turns one
hundred this year and to celebrate its opening
its doors to the public as part of a garden
party complete with snacks, entertainment
and carriage rides reminiscent of the grand
home’s era.
Event promoter Joshua Fritz says organizers
are hoping everyone will come enjoy what
has been planned.
“We wanted to celebrate a significant piece
of history,” he says. “Obviously, a centennial
year is a big year, so we thought we would do
this event.”
Fritz notes all ages are welcome at the
party. “This is about home and family,” he
says, “we want families to come out and enjoy
spending time together.”
The historic home and it’s five-acre property
will be open to guests from 1:30 - 5:30
p.m. July 4th. The event requires a business
attire dress code and features a diverse lineup
of entertainment, including classical music
by the Musaeus quartet and guitarist Dale
Ketcheson.
“We wanted to enjoy classical music fitting
with the elegant property,” says Fritz.
A highlight of the afternoon will be a
4:30 p.m. Spanish flamenco performance
by the Fiona Malena Flamenco Ensemble
of Calgary. The group will perform under a
5,400-square-foot high-peak pole tent that
sits on the property to host weddings, receptions
and other special events.
Also planned for the afternoon is a dressage
horse riding event at Don Toney’s outdoor
riding arena just north of the Norland
on South Sunnyside Road. Fritz notes the
arena is just a short walk from the Norland
property.
Guests can also enjoy a ride on a historic
carriage courtesy of Cardston’s Remington
Carriage Museum, a portrait opportunity,
hors’ doevres and self-guided tours of the
property and mansion.
Built in 1910, the seven-bedroom, sevenbathroom
mansion was the dream home of
Missouri native Charles Roland Daniel and
his wife Maurine. The couple purchased 2,000
acres north of the jail in Lethbridge, and built
the 7,500-square-foot, three-storey colonial mansion.
Reminiscent of homes common in the
deep - south, the pre - fabricated house was
ordered from a lumberman’s catalogue with
each piece numbered and shipped ready for
assembly.
Daniel ran a dairy farm on the property,
which became a popular location for family
and friends to gather.
Today the estate, located at the corner of
Sunnyside Road South and Highway 512, is
owned by Al and Karen Fritz; who run a bed
and breakfast and host weddings and other
special events on the site.
Fritz says an opportunity will be provided
to record memories of the property during the
party, which will then be passed on to the Sir
Alexander Galt Museum and Archives.
“A lot of people have memories of the area,”
he says, “we want to allow them to enjoy those
memories by allowing them to come out
here.”
The event is presented in part by Davidson
and Williams, one of the area’s oldest law
firms. Established in 1885 by Charles Frederick
Pringle Conybeare, Lethbridge’s first lawyer,
the firm and the man were instrumental
in much of the city’s history, including the
establishment of what is now the Chamber
of Commerce and the historic Southminster
United Church on 4 Avenue South.
Tickets for the event are $32 per adult.
Children 12 and under are free. Tickets are
available through the ticket centre by calling
329-SEAT or will be available at the door.
A portion of ticket sales will go toward
the Gilead Foundation of Alberta, which is
working toward establishing an addictions
healing centre just north of Lethbridge. Fritz
says centennial postcards will be sold for $1
apiece and donations will be accepted for the
carriage rides with all proceeds also going to
the Foundation.
customers that rivals the best the banking industry
has to offer, anywhere.
“The new Lethbridge branch leads the
ATB chain in innovation,” says Kellington,
explaining their wireless internet access
available to anyone with a laptop computer,
a community meeting room available to the
public, a live stock ticker, and a large screen
TV in the lobby.
“When you step in the door,” Kellington
said, “the first thing you come to is a round
table near the front doors with two mounted,
laptop computers free for anyone to use.
Both systems offer internet access for banking,
checking e-mail or merely surfing the
web.”
“Take a deep breath and smell the popcorn,”
he smiles. “We’re keeping the spirit of
the Paramount Theatre alive by giving out
free popcorn,” he said, adding that the Stu-
dents’ Association at the Lethbridge College
loaned ATB the popcorn machine for a “trial
run” during the summer.
“There’s a lot to be excited about,” says
Rob Smith, ATB’s vice-president, south region,
who offices in Lethbridge. “Besides this
beautifully renovated heritage building, we’ll
be a big part of Lethbridge’s downtown revitalization.
We now offer a whole new experience,”
he said, noting the spacious and
comfortable spacious sit-down teller stations
which replaced most of the traditional standup
stations.
“ATB opens its doors to everyone, not just
customers,” Kellington emphasized, pointing
to the free use of their community conference
room, available on a reservation basis.
“We’re now like a banking version of an internet
cafe,” he added.
The realization that ATB was rapidly
running out of space came a few years ago
as their former premises on 6th street filled
up. “We were right to the gunnels in the
old building,” Kellington said. “We not only
housed our retail department, but also our
wealth management department. We were
shoulder to shoulder and needed to find
more space.”
As the ATB team began searching for
space in downtown Lethbridge, they knew
they could not go past 6th Avenue South nor
East of Stafford Drive without leaving the
downtown core. “Even the Park Place mall
is outside of the traditional downtown core,”
Kellington commented.
“We looked and looked, but nothing
came to fruition,” he said. “We could only
find 4,000 to 5,000 square feet, which was
far too small. Then one day, someone from
Paramount Development Group contacted
us with the great news that we could get
13,700 square feet of office space spread over
two floors, exactly suited to house our retail
services, our wealth management advisors,
Investor Services, and our Corporate Financial
Service experts.”
“We now have more space at our Mayor
Magrath location by consolidating these departments
downtown,” he said Kellington.
Seeing that the Lethbridge Paramount
Theatre “has an interesting history,” the theatre
opened October 9, 1950, with a seating
capacity of 960. The first movie screened was
“Fancy Pants” starring Bob Hope and Lucile
Ball. “You could see the movie for 45 cents
for a matinee or 55 cents for evenings,” Kellington
said, “or just 15 cents for children.”
In 1968, the Paramount expanded to add
another 450 new seats. It closed in 2007 after
showing its last movie, “Pirates of the Carib-
bean 3” starring Johnny Depp and Geoffrey Rush.
“Everyone loves the old theatre setting,”
Kellington pointed out, saying “it’s a benefit
that we don’t have to re-advertise ourselves;
everyone knows where the Paramount is.”
“One of our new ideas is the full time presence
of Kate, who is not just a greeter. She will
make everyone feel comfortable with our new
surroundings as she guides customers to the
person they need to see. She makes eye contact,
provides coffee, donuts or popcorn, and
will come to know people by name; it’s just
like the treatment a really nice hotel gives its
guests.” He went on to explain that, “it’s all
about interaction; meeting people’s needs. We
want to be a part of downtown, part of its history,
part of people’s memories.”
“In the financial business, people will tell
you their dreams,” Kellington said, thoughtfully,
“then we go to work to find ways to make
it happen. That means we aren’t just bankers,
we’re dream-makers!”
“True success is when our customer
achieves their dreams,” Kellington summed
it up. “Our goal is to get involved; whether
it’s in community events or in people’s lives
and needs, when people come to us we make
things happen.”
Chrysler Ram selected 2010 ‘Truck of the Year’
By Bill Axtell
For the Lethbridge Journal
It’s no wonder one sees so much excitement
around Lethbridge’s Bridge City
Chrysler these days. Motor Trend Magazine
awarded the all-new Ram Heavy Duty truck
the coveted “Truck of the Year” Award for
2010.
According to Jonas Arnoldussen, General
Manager and Clarence Arnoldussen of
the 23-year-old Lethbridge dealership, “this
award is just what we needed to launch our
sales growth like never before.”
In announcing its annual truck award, the
magazine said the Ram has what it calls “Star
Power”, saying they found the Ram to be the
hardest-working truck in the business. “The
heavy-duty truck market has gotten smaller,
but the guys who buy those pickups are
fiercely loyal to the segment-they need the
extreme capability these hard-working haulers
provide. Some may wonder why anyone
would own a truck that can tow nearly 20,000
pounds, but for a lot of people in construction,
those who transport vehicles or goods,
and those with ranches, this is just a part of
everyday life,” says Allyson Harwood, speaking
for Motor Trend’s analysis which led to
the award.
Industry sources say that within the next
few months, the heavy-duty category will
heat up, as all three manufacturers have allnew
offerings .The Ram Heavy Duty was
the first to market and was the only truck to
meet the 2010 federal emissions standards.
When Ford and GM’s all-new heavy-dutys
come out, both new diesel engines will require
urea injection to meet the emissions
requirements that became effective January
2010.
Arnoldussen quickly emphasized that
Chrysler Corp’s Ram Heavy Duty’s Cummins
inline-six turbodiesel, which puts out an im-
We’re an AMA approved Full
Service Auto Repair Facility and
we’ve been servicing Southern
Alberta for almost 30 years.
Chris Tolley
pressive 350 horsepower and 650 pound-feet
of torque, met those requirements -- without
urea – a year earlier. “A urea fillup, required
for the our competing models, adds additional
cost and inconvenience” he said.
Instead, the Ram 2500 and 3500 use a NOx
adsorber with precious metals that convert
the NOx into inert gases.
Harwood went on to explain the rationale
for awarding the Ram line is that “not only
does this mean the Ram’s emissions and exhaust
systems are less complex than competing
models, a factor which could improve
reliability and help keep maintenance costs
down. Moreover, at the dealership, the Ram
will very likely have a price advantage over
its competitors. And while in this size category
diesel is king, there are plenty of heavy-
Car Troubles?
duty truck buyers who prefer gas power. The
5.7-liter Hemi, the Ram’s base engine, has
the most horsepower (383) and torque (400
pound-feet) of any V-8 in its class.
Bridge City’s Arnoldussen sees a strong
growth curve coming as increasingly better
products arrive in the market. “With the
new consolidation with Fiat, the company
is very much alive and doing very well,”
he said, confidently. “We are retaining and
growing our market share,” he added.
As proof of Arnoldussen’s assessment of
the growth potential of his manufacturer,
Chrysler Canada just announced a 53 per
cent jump in sales for May, 2010, over May,
2009, further citing these highlights:
In announcing the increase, Chrysler
Canada said it sold 20,887 units last month
compared to 13,657 units sold in May 2009.
Calendar year to date, Chrysler Canada sales
are 28 per cent ahead of last year. The company
also said it is level on the strength of a solid
product offering and soaring confidence in the
Chrysler. For the sixth consecutive month, retail
sales increased more than 20 per cent on a
monthly basis.
Sales at Bridge City Chrysler over the 23
years since the Arnoldussen family started
the business have showed similar strength on
more local level. “Chrysler Canada has four
groups of dealers, ranked by size in terms of
annual sales volume,” Arnoldussen explained.
“There are approximately 450 Chrysler dealers
in Canada and we are the only local Chrysler
dealer in the top 10% for sales volume in Canada”
he said, adding, “not bad for a medium
sized market such as Lethbridge.
The Arnoldussen family as always put serving
the customer’s needs first in their daily
conduct of business. “We believe that if we
treat our customers and employees right, we
will be successful,” he commented. “It’s always
worked for us over the years.”
“Our goal for the future is to have the best
employees possible who are focused on providing
excellent service to our customers. We
understand the importance of continuous improvement.”
Looking towards the future, Arnoldussen
said every vehicle they now sell will be all
new or significantly refreshed over the next 24
months.
“It’s a great time to be a Chrysler dealer,” he
noted. “People need to come and see for themselves
that our trucks, our cars, our sport utilities,
and all our products are the best we have
ever had.”
Enmax Centre’s new man
Kim Gallucci has his work cut out for
him.
Gallucci, 46, is the newly-hired general
manager of the Enmax Centre. He has taken
over the job in the midst of a major renovation
project, and while he’s very busy, he says
he’s settling well into his new position.
“It’s a steep learning curve, but it’s also
very exciting. They have a great team here, a
really dedicated group of people,” he explains.
Gallucci is currently learning the ins and
outs of the Lethbridge marketplace, and his
main focus continues to be the ongoing construction
project, in addition to his duties
involving marketing, budgeting, and event
attraction. While the learning curve may be
steep, Gallucci is far from an amateur – he
comes to the Lethbridge from Saskatoon,
where he was CEO of TCU Place, a major
arts and convention centre. He was also chair
of Saskatoon Sports Tourism and sat on the
Convention Saskatoon group, as well as the
bid committee that succeeded in winning the
2007 Juno Awards for Saskatoon.
“I love the business, it’s very interesting.
It’s creative, it’s challenging, and there’s
never a dull moment. Every time you think
you have it figured out, it will throw you a
curveball just to remind you that you haven’t
figured out anything yet,” Gallucci explains.
“You can’t really get bored, that’s for sure.
Once you’re captivated by that, it tends to
hold you. You don’t really leave the industry,
because it keeps you interested.”
Born and raised in Saskatoon, Gallucci
got his start in the industry after graduating
from the University of Saskatchewan with a
degree in economics, experience he says is
extremely valuable in his current work.
“I really enjoyed that – trying to determine
the future based on what’s happening now,”
he says, adding that such skills carry over into
many aspects of business and industry.
While attending school, Gallucci began
working at TCU Place, and he stayed there for
many years before deciding to make the move
to Lethbridge, saying he enjoyed the idea of
moving up a size and managing an arena.
“It offers a real opportunity, it’s sort of that
next stage for me,” he explains. “It’s such a
broad area, you can go in a number of directions.
But you always want to keep challenging
yourself to do different things.”
Gallucci says he loves the challenge offered
by his work, and the opportunity to
Gallucci says he has noticed a lot of similarities
Clean air, it’s all
about filtration
By Chris Schimanski
For the Lethbridge Journal
This weeks article, I would like to briefly discuss furnace
filtration. As a consumer there are plenty of filter options for
you to choose from. They range in cost from a few dollars up
to hundreds of dollars, but which furnace filter is the right
one?
Firstly, what a furnace filter can do for you.
Traditionally, furnace filters were designed to protect the
furnace and fans. With increased air quality awareness, some
filters are now being installed to reduce exposure to particles
which can affect your health.
There is a wide variety of furnace filters available. However,
you may find it confusing to select one which is suitable.
This purpose of this document is to provide you with guidance
when selecting your furnace filter.
What airborne particles are found in your home? The
particles you breathe in your home come from a variety of
sources, including:
- dust on floors or other surfaces that is disturbed by
activity in the house;
- dust generated by smoking, burning candles, cooking,
doing laundry, etc.;
- hair and skin flakes from humans or pets;
- particles from the outside air which come into your home
with infiltrating air.
You can see the particles of dust which accumulate on
your television screen, shelves, and furniture. But you can’t
see the respirable particles. Respirable particles can be easily
inhaled into your lungs and provoke respiratory illness.
Although you would probably like to keep visible dust out
of your home, the main health risk comes from respirable
particles, which include tobacco smoke, spores, bacteria, and
viruses.
How you reduce levels of respirable particles:
- removing footwear on entry;
- keeping major dust generators (smoking, pets, etc.) out
of the house;
- reducing dust collecting surfaces (open shelves, carpets,
upholstered furniture, etc.):
- diligent and frequent vacuuming with an efficient vacuum
cleaner;
- reducing the entry of particle-laden outdoor air by
closing windows, improving house air tightness, and
installing an intake filter on the air supply;
- using a good furnace filter.
Typed of filters available:
i) 25 mm (1”) premium media filter
ii) Charged media type electronic
iii) 100 mm (4”) pleated media filter
iv) High efficiency bypass filters, such as a HEPA (high
efficiency particle arrestor)
v) Electronic plate and wire (ESP)
Most of these recommendations will also reduce the
amount of visible dust in your house.
Remember that your furnace filter must be changed every
30 days if your using disposable filters and washed if your using
reusable filters.
A trained indoor air quality technician can ensure that the
right filter is used.
BUSINESS TIP
Ask the Coach
The gains of marketing
By Greg Stonehocker
For the Lethbridge Journal
The least expensive way to get more customers
is to increase the value of the customers
you’ve already got. You must look at
them in terms of lifetime value, or the dollar
amount they will generate over the longterm,
rather than just a one-off transaction.
Part of this mindset starts with looking
at your business as a total marketing entity,
rather than just a production, service or retail
entity. The big reason for this is it allows
you to see all marketing expenses as investments
– investments that generate a return,
or ROI.
It will also help you accept the reality that
when you buy your customers, it will always
be your biggest expense; it will also be your
most profitable.
Making your creative visions come alive is perhaps the most exciting thing about
graphic design. Professionals in this field spend their time conceptualizing and creating
for diverse brands and often get to work on different projects all the time.
GRAPHIC DESIGN TECHNIqUES
Conceptualization is a very important part of graphic design. You must be able to
compile and follow creative briefs in order to work for a variety of clientele. Whether
it’s designing a new corporate logo, overseeing the development of an entire brand or
designing a website, conceptualization plays a huge role in the creative process.
VISUAL ARTS
Before any graphic elements may be applied to a design, the graphic elements must
be originated by means of visual art skills. These graphics are often developed by a
graphic designer. Visual arts include works which are primarily visual in nature using
anything from traditional media, to photography or computer generated art. Graphic
design principles may be applied to each graphic art element individually as well as to
the final composition.
TYPOGRAPHY
Never underestimate the importance of colour and typography in your design work.
They are cogs in the wheel and can make or break a project. Learning the basics in
these graphic design courses can go a long way in ensuring you have the knowledge
base to make your designs stand out above the rest.
COMPUTER GRAPHIC DESIGN
So what do I mean by “buying” your
customers? Instead of “selling” to your customers,
“buying” your customers opens up
a world of possibilities. Instead of guessing
how much to spend on sales and marketing,
“buying” your customers means you know
exactly how much to spend on your marketing
in order to generate revenue.
First off, you need to determine the acquisition
cost of your current customer. If
you’ve put $1000 into advertising and had
100 phone calls, you’re paying $10 for each
lead. If only 5 of those leads make a purchase,
you’re paying $50 to capture each sale.
Once you know how much it costs to
buy a customer, you can then start thinking
about the consequences of a customer’s
lifetime value. Knowing this value – which
is simply the amount of money your average
customer will spend with you over a buying
lifetime, will help you make better decisions
In order to succeed in the world of graphic design, students must learn how to work
with key industry software like Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop and Dreamweaver; all of
which are covered in the Computer Graphic Design courses at Reeves College.
OF THE WEEK:
www.hire-standard.com
about the overall direction of your business.
Let’s look at a company where an average
customer would spend around $800 and
shop there for about 5 years. This would
mean that the lifetime value of that customer
would be $4000.
Now imagine you created a program that
both produced and rewarded referrals. Say
that single customer now had incentive to refer
two new customers to me. Suddenly, that
customer is worth $12,000. What if those
new referrals sent more referrals? How much
value is that initial contact worth now? More
importantly, what would I be willing to do to
keep that customer?
This long-term view of customer value is
essential. Only when you realize a customer’s
lifetime value do you see the importance of
developing great relationships with your customers.
That way, you’ll do whatever it takes
to keep them for a very long time.
The ultimate goal of all that effort, of
course, is to build a loyal base of raving
fans.”To paraphrase Jeffrey Gitomer: customer
satisfaction is worthless, but customer
loyalty is priceless.
How do you get your customers to be
loyal to your business?
You start with your existing base of customers.
Start tapping into your database. Begin
Start sending them letters, brochures,
catalogues, or newsletters. Develop a loyalty
club. Or just pick up the phone and thank
your customers for their past business.
Remember whatever you do, make sure
it’s consistent, easy for people to buy from
you, and finally, develop and introduce a
WOW factor – where your customer’s expectations
are surpassed each and every time.
Creating a WOW is easier said than
done. However, when you find your WOW,
you must create a system to make sure your
customer’s expectations are surpassed, every
time. Every day you need to get better. And
you need a plan that goes further than just
providing great customer service.
Combined, each of these areas will work
together to give you an advantage in your
market that outshines your competition no
matter what the economy does.
You’ll develop a great competitive advantage,
and they’ll continue to say great things
about you and your company to their friends
HOROSCOPE
Christine Davidson
CANCER (June 21-July 22): Sometimes,
people need to hold secrets for
a good, fortunate, or noble reason.
There are secrets that are being
shared and whispered but don’t
let this play upon your suspicious
tendencies. You are usually stronger
and brighter, and perhaps, a little bit
braver than most others around you.
You will win in the end!
LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): Even though
you may recall your first love quite
strongly you should focus upon
the love you currently feel for your
romantic partner. Love can come in
many forms. Avoid obstacles in your
path by behaving in an intelligent or in
a more self-serving (while remaining
moral) manner. This is a spiritual,
influential time.
VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): Try to
spend time outdoors with old friends.
If this doesn’t suit your fancy, then
spend time investigating secrets and
mysteries with others as intuitive and
clever as you. Don’t listen to everything
that someone else has to say
about a particular subject or person,
even if it rings true in some ways it
may be false.
LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): If you are
in doubt of what needs to be said or
done, then something may show you
the right direction to go in. Follow
your feelings, family, and intuition.
Secret actions may result in greater
power. There could be something that
you do in private that might help you
acquire a degree of fame or notoriety.
SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): If you
don’t fully understand what is going
on then now is the correct time to ask
questions and get answers. There
may seem as if lessons are in store
but only if you wish for them to be.
It’s time for you to realise your true
you find worthy pupils.
Try to form romances with others as
loyal, kind, and clever as you are.
True love could have the potential to
nurture and heal or harm and wither
an individual depending on whom you
choose to share your heart.
AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): Try to
spend time engaging in competitive
fun and games to let off some steam
and gain friends and confidence. It’s
time to pay attention to what can truly
bring the greatest amount of care,
kindness, and nurture to those you
love. What you once believed to be
only child’s play you may have grown
tired of.
PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): There
are adventures and creative games
in store for you, but you’ll have to go
out and pursue them. You seem to be
able to magically glide and float past
and over anything that could cause
you any hindrance. Love may find a
way in more ways than one over the
next little while. Ardent passions may
be stoked.
ARIES (March 21-April 19): Be sure
that future goals are based on reality.
Joining spiritual or artistic organisations
may bring joy, luck, and gain.
You are a truly unique and beautiful
person whom many may envy and
adore. It’s the right time to ask for
favours and permission as others
will wish to impress, befriend, and
trust you.
TAURUS (April 20-May 20): Be discreet
and modest in all things. Look
to the sign of Gemini for more advice.
Don’t be too surprised if you are given
rewards of some kind for your recent
hard work. If you’re looking to gain
recognition for your efforts then work
with the arts, healing, and spirituality.
Don’t spread secrets, innuendo or
lies.
GEMINI (May 21-June 20): Those
who know you know you well. There
may be more to you than meets
the eye; you could uncover spiritual
knowledge while travelling. There
may be secrets involving finances
or hidden issues regarding family
and loved ones. Resolve things in a
DOUGLAS
DOUGLAS, RUBY LENA
April 27, 1922 – June 19, 2010
Ruby Douglas passed away at the Queen Elizabeth
II Hospital in Grande Prairie, AB on June 19, 2010
surrounded with love by her children – Linda, Jim,
Marlene, Jack and Eileen, and by her grand children
– Doug, Stacey, Cara, Crista, Jamie, Derrick and
David. Other family not able to be with her – Sean,
Garrett and Joe as well as Jan, Elijah, Jessie, David,
Cheryl, Clint, Berkley and Garth. She was 88 years
old. Waiting to greet her into loving arms on the
other side were her beloved husband, Harvey “Doug”
Douglas, adopted son Edward “Eddie” Stick, her
parents John and Violet, sister Edna and brothers
Henry and George.
Ruby was born in La Grande, Oregon on April 27,
1922 to John Williams and Violet (Duffield)
Williams. Together with two sisters, Myrtle and
Edna, and two brothers, Henry and George, the family
moved to Cereal in southern Alberta and eventually
to Bowden, Alberta where they farmed. In October
1942, Ruby married Doug Douglas. Ruby and Doug
had a very special love during more than 50 years of
life together. In 1952, Ruby, with two children, Linda
and James (“Jim”), followed Doug from Edmonton
to Aishihik in the Yukon where their third child John
(“Jack”) was born. In 1955, they moved to Watson
Lake, Yukon where they became friends with Rudy &
Janet Couture, Roy & Ellen Eby, Helen & Jim
Stuart and Doug & Pearl Bell. These friendships
were renewed when they all eventually moved to
Whitehorse, Yukon – those friendships survive to
this day. As a teenager, Eddie Stick became part
of the Douglas family in Whitehorse where Ruby
worked for the Federal Department of
Communications. She was an avid curler and
square dancer and she loved to play cards. Ruby
and Doug were always the best dancers on the floor.
They remained in the Yukon until they both retired to
Balfour, BC in 1979. They later moved to
Lethbridge, AB to be closer to family. After her
beloved Doug died in Lethbridge in 1997, Ruby
moved to Grande Prairie to be closer to her children.
Ruby genuinely cared about everyone she met. She
became a second Mom to many of her children’s
friends who still call her Mom Douglas. Ruby made
life-long friends wherever she went and always
had a huge meal and kind words for everyone who
graced her door.
Ruby is survived by her sister Myrtle as well as her
children, grand children and great-grand children.
We love you and we will miss you.
Ruby’s family would like to thank the 5 North nurses,
especially Pam and Michelle, and Dr. Wang who
