We have also embarked on a series of
Palm Oil Mill Effluent (“POME”)
treatment projects. In 2009, we initiated
the construction of a tertiary treatment
plant at Retus Palm Oil Mill, a mill that
belongs to Retus Plantation Sdn. Bhd., a
related company, and managed by
TPB. Completed and commissioned in
the fourth quarter of 2010, the treatment
plant is capable of reducing the
Biochemical Oxygen Demand and Total
Suspended Solid levels of the mill’s final
discharge to meet the standards set by
the Department of Environment in
Sarawak. A similar project is being
implemented at Trusan Palm Oil Mill
and is targeted for completion by the
end of 2011.
To reduce green house gas emissions,
the Group is evaluating various
proposals on methane capture, with the
objective of utilising the captured gas for
energy generation. Methane is one of
the major green house gases produced
in the anaerobic treatment of POME.
During the year, the Group moved a
step closer towards RSPO certification.
One of the key requirements of the
RSPO Principles and Criteria is open
and transparent communication and
consultation with the key stakeholders.
Accordingly, a meeting with the
representative stakeholders of the
Tenggara Team was held on 11
November 2010. Stakeholders who
attended the meeting, included
representatives from the Government,
National Union of Plantation Workers
and members of the surrounding
community, have given encouraging
endorsement to the Group.
Going green is not a passing trend; we
believe that the preservation of the
environment is one of the biggest
challenges of our time. TPB is committed
to play its part as a responsible
corporate citizen.
PERFORMANCE REVIEW
No report to shareholders would be
complete without some mention of our
efforts in the important areas of
corporate social responsibility, human
resource management and occupational
safety and health, which are covered in
greater detail in a separate section of
this report. We believe in integrating
socially responsible policies, practices
and programmes in all our decisionmaking
processes and business
operations based on ethical values and
respect for the community, employees,
the environment and our various
stakeholders. Based on this philosophy,
we will continue to channel resources
and efforts to improve our standing in
these key areas. By doing so, we
provide the Group with a sustainable
base for future earnings and operations.
