1. INTRODUCTION TO BASICS :<br />

Simple sketches of mechanical hand tools. Brief description of machine tools and equipments.<br />

Different types of operations by different types of machine tools (only name and diagrams).<br />

Safety precautions in using machine tools.<br />

2. INTRODUCTION TO LATHE :<br />

Lathe, centre lathe, General purpose lathe machine, Types of lathe machine. Specification of lathe<br />

machine, safety rules of the workshop. Principle of Lathe.<br />

3. LATHE MACHINE PARTS :<br />

Study of various lathe parts and sub assemblies of the lathe & their functions, Accessories viz.<br />

Lathe centers, face plate, dressing plate, angle plate, three jaw chuck, four jaw chuck, collect,<br />

mondrel, steady rest, moving rest, Tail stock, taper turning attachments. Description of the<br />

above accessories giving their sketches.<br />

composition, properties and application of High carbon steel, High speed steel, carbide, ceramic and<br />

diamond.<br />

2. LATHE MACHINE TERMINOLOGY<br />

Taper, Taperturning, use of taper, Explanation of taper, Calculations for taper, conicity : Speed,<br />

Feed, Depth of cut.<br />

3 LATHE OPERATIONS :<br />

Centring, Simple Turning, Stepturning, Facing, Drilling, Boring, Tapering, knurling, Parting off<br />

Taper, chamfering, Finishing.<br />

4. CALCULATIONS FOR THREAD CUTTING :<br />

Explanation of simple gear train and compound gear train. Calculation for change wheels<br />

meterics thread on English lead screw. Cutting multiple threads. Brief description with dies<br />

feed gear box.<br />

5. TURRET AND CAPSTAN LATHES<br />

Difference between centre, capston and turret lathes. Specifications scope and applications of<br />

turret and capston lathe in production shop. Machine details such as head stock, work holding<br />
