Surgical Management of
VASCULAR DISEASES
An Outline of the Surgical Management of Vascular Lesions
and Diseases. For Surgeons, Physicians and Students
By GERALD H. PRATT, M.D., F.A.C.S.
Associate Clinical Professor of Surgery, New York University, Chief of the Vascular Clinic and Associate
Attending Surgeon, Saint Vincent's Hospital; Attending Surgeon, St. Clair Hospital, New York;
Diplomate of American Board of Surgery; Commander, Medical Corps, United States
Naval Reserve
Foreword by W. Wayne Babcock, M.D., Temple University, Philadelphia
IN NO field of medical endeavor have there been such remarkable advances as
in the vascular field. In this timely book Dr. Pratt has assembled, classified
and graphically discussed the sound and accepted methods of cardiovascular
diseases. He has drawn upon the information gained from the treatment of more
than 5000 patients annually and presents
the subject just as it would be given in a
postgraduate course for physicians and
surgeons.
Treatment is emphasized throughout,
but essential anatomic, diagnostic and
pathologic facts are not overlooked. Indications
for and technic of surgical intervention
are detailed and only those methods
which have proven of value are
presented.
Among the problems frequently met for
which new and sound therapeutic measures
are given are complications of occlusive
arterial diseases, thrombosis,
embolism, lymphedema, aneurysms,
hypertension, phlebitis, varicose veins and
their complications of ulcer, inflammation
and dermatitis. Other features include the jj
technic of medical and surgical inter-
ruption of the sympathetic nervous
system system, including temporary nerve block- Arteriovenous aneurysm occurring in the ear of
nerve block- F
a baby shortly after delivery by forceps.
ing and permanent sympathectomy, a legend given in book.)
(Detailed
review of the advances in cardiac surgery
made in the past ten years, and the special technics used in angiography, skin
grafting and the surgical treatment of esophageal varices. Diabetic surgical
management is detailed. Dr. Pratt has included 181 black and white illustrations
and 2 colored plates. Many of these illustrations are drawings made right in
the operating room! Surgeons, internists and postgraduate and undergraduate students
will find in this book the help and guidance so urgently needed in the surgical
management of vascular diseases.
Professor of Radiology Emeritus, Northwestern University Medical School, Chicago.
THIS DEFINITIVE WORK-comprehensive, authoritative, completely up-to-date-which
so long has held an uncontested place in the literature, is now brought to English-reading
physicians in a new edition. Profusely iihitiated with all new plates, many in tWo
in diagnostic roentgenology. Bibliographies have been brought up to date with full
international references, including those to the English-language literature.
Written and edited by men eminent in radiology, ROENTGEN-DIAGNOSTICS provides
the specialist with a detailed survey, stressing roentgenology as an essential part of the
entire field of medicine and surgery. With this broad view, the book is also an ideal
manual for the physician who does not specialize in roentgenology yet needs a fuller
understanding of its diagnostic applications to his own medical or surgical problems.
The American edition is being published simultaneously with the Fifth German Edition,
so that readers can consult at an early date the most recent advances in roentgenology.
