Storage of Top Soil:10 ha.
Area remains untouched:1021.569 ha.
Total:1437.719 ha.
(d) Agriculture
In the intermountain valleys and other areas, the crop land exists as small patches. The mining
operation does not affect any agricultural land inside or outside the lease hold area.
(e) Forest (flora & fauna)
The forest area covered over 1167.313 ha. The area consists of thin vegetation covered with
different species of flora. Fauna like Langur, Jackal, Wolf , Jungle cat, Bat, Jungle owl Squirrels
are found in the area. The impact of nice due to mining operation and blasting on wild life is
inevitable.
(f) Vegetation
The overall impact on vegetation is limited to the temporary deterioration of land due to mining
and allied activities for which suitable reclamation scheme has been made besides compensatory
afforestation for forest land. The bio-diversity closer to and away from mining areas does not
show any significant deviations.
(g) Public building, places and monuments (protected
monument and historical monument), places of
worship and places of tourist interest.
There are no protracted monuments and
historical monuments in side the core
and buffer zone.
ii) Water Environment
(a) Surface water
The natural drainage system is distinct due to hilly topography in most part of the study circle.
Baitarani River flowing at a distance of about 3.5 km on eastern side of the Joda West lease
forms the major drainage system of the area. Kundra nala originating from a liter distance
beyond the Southern hilly region flows adjacent to the Western and Northern boundary of Joda
West lease. Major part of the area has dendritic drainage pattern.
(b) Ground water
Core zone is mainly hilly area. The area is under hard rock formations. The rock do not have
primary porosity; only structural weaknesses like joints, fractures, folds, faults and weathering
processes provide secondary porosity for storing and transmitting water. The ground water
occurs under unconfined to semi confined conditions. The area received recharges mainly from
participation and surface sources.
(c) Quality of water
Samples were drawn at upstream & downstream of Kundra, Nallah. The average result is
enclosed as Annexure-III.
iii) Air Environment
(a) Noise
The noise level is being monitored and no significant impact has been observed as of now.
Existing control measures to preserve environment caused by noise pollution are;
a) Mufflers and silencers are used in mining and earth moving equipments,
b) Noise level from dumpers and other vehicles are kept low by avoiding travel in excess
gradient.
c) Maintenance schedules are adhered strictly.
d) Operating personnel working near the machine are provided with ear plugs.
The details of noise monitoring is enclosed as Annexure-IV
(b) Air
The monitoring result show that, the mining activities has not created a significant impact on

- 7 -
ambient air quality primarily due to medium scale operation and secondarily due to dense
vegetation around the mining area. The month wise analysis of ambient air quality from Apr’09
to Sept’09 is shown in Annexure-V.
(c) Climatic condition
The core area lies in tropical region having an extreme climate. The winter temperatures of the
study area indicate that it is the subtropical region. Summer is typically from March to mid June
when temperature ranges from a maximum of 44ºC during daytime to a minimum of 23ºC at
night. Winter is from December to February when the maximum temperature during day goes up
to 29ºC and minimum temperature at night becomes as low as 4ºC.
iv) Socio-economic environment
(a) Social and demographic profile
The area has primarily forest and fallow land. Most of the smaller villages and hamlets consist of
a single tribe or caste population. The local tribes are Munda, Savara, Santhal, Ho, Oroan,
Kahala, Dhiba, Naik, Patra, Sohri, Manji, Gopa, Korwa, Mahakut, and Doon. A number of
scheduled castes are also local habitants. They are Bajikar, Bedia, Beldan, Bhoi, Chema,
Dandasi, Dhewar, Kandra, Kori, Laheri, Madari, Mala, Mahan, Musahar, Panika, Pasi Tusi etc.
The people are mainly forest dwellers with agriculture as their main activity. Other than this, a
large number of people are employed as labourers in the various mining companies.
(b) Recommending health and safety
The climate and vegetation along with the topography have made the area fairly inhospitable.
Dense tropical forest, abundant stagnant water and humidity are conducive to giving rise to a
number of diseases. However , Tata Steel Rural Development society put the continuous effort
towards awareness of people and rendering the medical support inside the core and buffer zone.
(c) Human settlement
Population in the study area is little less than 1 lakh. Excluding the urban population the average
settlement size is 501.69% of the settlements have a population less than 501 while almost 92%
of the settlements have less than 1000 inhabitants. The terrain and ecology do not permit larger
settlements.
(d) Recreational facility
Free housing, electricity , water, Tata Sky facility conveyance allowance , School Bus to Joda,
Medical facilities, LTC, bonus and other hosts of welfare facilities provided to the workers and
other employees.
8. Sensitive technical items on conservation of mineral, scientific mining and protection of
environment
Specific issues that are required to be kept in focus for examination & monitoring should be stated
here.
Sensitive technical items on conservation of mineral, scientific mining and protection of
environment, specific issues that are required to be kept in focus for examination and ; monitoring
should be stated here.
While doing the scientific mining for the judicious exploitation of mineral deposit approx. 10% of
the ore production is assessed to be sub-grade mineral comprising of Manganese fines, which is
separately stacked from overburden waste. The average grade of the sub grade mineral is found in
the range of 10-25% Mn. Ore which is recommended by IBM. In addition to this due course of
mining in the mineral fines (rejects) which are generated approx. 10% of the ore production &
stored separately as sub grade mineral. Efforts are being made for the sale of Mineral Fines
(rejects) in the local market as well as Exports.
Boundary pillars of the lease area are found fixed on the earmarked place having 4 feet height with
bearings & directions distinctly marked on them.
Regular monitoring is being done for following aspects to comply the specific conditions imposed
in Environmental Clearance obtained from MoEF.
a) Ground water level in the wells,

- 8 -
b) Analysis of trace metals (Fe, Cr+6, Cu, Se, As, Cd, Hg, Pb, Zn & Mn) in ground water
at lower elevation,
c) Quality of drinking water &
d) Trace metals ( Ni, Co, As, Hg) in dust fall.
