INTRODUCTION
WELCOME! This year we are celebrating Puget Sound Revels’ 20th Anniversary
and we‘re delighted you are here for The Christmas Revels. For two decades
we have offered glimpses of the celebrations of times past and have invited
our present day community into the act and art of celebration. Imagine the
traditional arts as the seedbed of all the arts. Imagine the traditional arts
as nourishment that sustains the whole community. Imagine Puget Sound
Revels as a cultivator of that seedbed. For 20 years we’ve been turning the soil,
bringing the deep rich material of past communities into our own. A wellspring
of song, dance and story is the fruit of our efforts. What fun it has been.
The Christmas Revels is based on the old and varied traditions that arose in
response to winter – that time of the year when people gathered with laughter,
music, dance and story-telling to drive the dark away. Each year, we delve into
the traditions of a different time and place. Today we find ourselves in Haddon
Hall, the ancestral manor of the Dukes of Rutland in England’s Derbyshire. It is
a real place, not just a Revels fantasy. Nearly eight-hundred and fifty years ago
along the River Wye, construction of this great house began; the banquet hall
(in which our Revels takes place) was completed around 1370. For centuries it
has stood as its inhabitants are born, prosper and pass on; as styles and customs
change; as the political and economic life of the country around it evolve. It is a
tangible link to the generations that have preceded us.
Our Revels opens in December, 1925. The current Duke and his family have
taken an afternoon ride in the new motorcar for a last look at the grand but
derelict manor before it is demolished. They know the splendid old place has
hosted 800 years of their forbearers’ feasting and revelry. What they don’t know
is that it still hosts winter revelers. Tonight they’ll discover (and we with them)
that celebration ties us all together: generations past, present and – through
our children – future.
WELCOME YULE!
Thanks beyond words are due to BJ Douglas and
Megan Oberfield. Each year this remarkably
talented duo brings beauty, magic and laughter to
the Rialto and beyond. We are all grateful.
It is expressly forbidden to use photographic or sound recording equipment
during the performance. Unauthorized persons found using such equipment
will be asked to leave or will be magically returned to the 12th century.

4. Deck the Hall
A Welsh New Year’s Eve carol, “Nos Galen” (New Year’s Night).
See the blazing Yule before us…
Strike the harp and join the chorus…
Follow me in merry measure…
While I tell of Yuletide treasure…
~ALL SING~
Deck the hall with boughs of holly. Fa-la-la…
‘Tis the season to be jolly. Fa-la-la…
Don we now our gay apparel. Fa-la-la…
Troll the ancient Yule-tide carol. Fa-la-la…
Fast away the old year passes…
Hail the new, ye lads and lasses…
Sing we joyous, all together…
Heedless of the wind and weather…
5. Morris Stick Dance
No one is sure where and when the tradition of Morris dancing began. References to the “Morryce”
date from the Middle Ages.
WYE ME STICK TEAM ADAM FURMAN, fiddle
6. Gloucestershire Wassail
The wassailers went singing from house to house, farm to farm, with a wassail cup hoping their
hosts would fill it to ensure good luck and abundance. From the Anglo-Saxon wes-hal meaning
“be whole” or “be well!”
SPIRITS OF HADDON CHORUS SEATTLE BRASS ENSEMBLE
7. Apple Tree Wassail
This ritual folk song from Somerset reflects the early origin of the carol, which involved dancing –
usually in a ring, in this case around an apple tree – to bring good luck and encourage its growth.
10. There Is No Rose of Swych Vertu
Filled with mystical imagery, this anonymous early 15th-century carol follows the medieval custom of
mixing Latin with the vernacular.
SPIRITS OF HADDON WOMEN
11. Holly and the Ivy
This old carol celebrates two traditionally important Christmas plants that symbolize the renewal of
life since they are evergreen, even fruiting, in the winter.
A country dance tune from Playford, arranged by Shulamit Kleinerman.
13. On Christmas Night
A traditional tune collected by Ralph Vaughn Williams in 1904 in Sussex. The earliest printed version
of the text appeared in 1684 in the popular book Smale Garland of Pious and Godly Songs.
14. The Lord of Misrule
At the time of the Feasts of Fools in the Middle Ages, a Lord of Misrule was chosen from the “common
folk,” to rule over the topsy-turvy revelry that marked the Twelve Days of Christmas.
15. A Counting Song
Sometimes called the “Dilly Song,” this song from Devon and Cornwall is related to Green Grow the
Rushes-O, but contains more ancient and universal images. Join in as you wish!
16. Winter Wakenth All My Cares
From The Harley Lyrics (also called Harley MS 2253), one of the richest sources of mediaeval English
lyrics dated ca. 1340. It contains secular and devotional prose and verse. No music survives with the
texts. This setting is by John Fleagle.
HEATHER URSCHEL, soloist
17. Invitation to the Dance
A seasonal poem by Patrick Swanson.
18. Lord of the Dance
Part I closes, as it does every year, with Sydney Carter’s contemporary lyrics to the Shaker song
“Simple Gifts.” Carol Langstaff’s choreography is a compilation of Morris steps from various
Cotswold village traditions.
(There will be a 15-minute intermission.)
SECOND PART
19. In the Bleak Midwinter
This setting by Gustav Holst (1874-1934) of a poem by Christina Rossetti (1830-1894) has become a
beloved Christmas season carol.
WEE SPIRITS OF HADDON
20. Abbots Bromley Horn Dance
This ancient ritual dance for good luck in hunting the stag is still danced every year in the little
village of Abbots Bromley, England. Carbon dating of the reindeer antlers used in Abbots Bromley
dates them to 900 CE, about the time of the Danish invasion. Its four supernumerary characters –
he Folk Fool, the Man-Woman, the Hobby Horse, the Boy Archer – link it with the mumming
traditions of Christmas.
ABBOTS BROMLEY DANCERS CHRIS BRIDEN, viola da gamba
21. Owt Of Your Slepe Aryse
A 15th century composition for three voice parts. “Of all women she [the Virgin Mary] beareth the
bell” is likely a reference to the lead sheep in a flock, or “bellwether.”
THE SPIRITS OF HADDON WOMEN
22. All Hail to the Days
The words and the tune of this jaunty broadside ballad first appeared in collections in the 17th century.
23. Wee Spirits of Haddon
The Wren Song
This ancient song about the hunting of the wren, bringer of luck in the new years, survives today
in a December 26 tradition in Ireland and the Isle of Man.
Tomorrow the Fox
Thomas Ravenscroft published this “melodius Musicke” in his 1609 collection Deuteromelia.

24. Medieval Set – Derbyshire Players, with Sarah Comer on violin
Stantipes
Originally for keyboard, with complicated harmonies and rhythms, this anonymous dance piece is
from the mid-14th century Robertsbridge Codex, from a Cistercian monastery in Sussex, England.
Nota
The tune is from an interesting 13th-14th century manuscript from Coventry, England, that contains
local legal documents, a reissue of the Magna Carta and several pieces of music and poetry.
25. Rejoice, Ye Tenants of the Earth
Originally published by the Somerset composer William Gifford as “A Hymn for Christmas Day 1817,”
this became a favorite of southwest England’s west gallery caroling parties. Our version, edited by
Dave Townsend, is based on the parts found in the Thomas Hardy manuscripts, collated with versions
from various other Dorset manuscripts.
26. English Country Dance
“Hole in the Wall” is one of many pieces written by Henry Purcell as incidental music for plays. This
one was published in John Playford’s 1698 edition of “The Dancing Master.”
27. Twelve Days of Christmas
A traditional English ‘forfeit’ carol.
28. Dona Nobis Pacem (Grant Us Peace)
The origin of this melody is unknown. Its words are from the Latin Mass.
~ALL SING~

29. St George and the Dragon Mummers play
A version of the traditional mummers play, which celebrates the rites of fertility, death and rebirth.
The sword dance and ritual execution survive from a time when the death of the hero or “Year King,”
was considered necessary to ensure fertility. The “lock” formed by the dancers’ swords symbolizes the
sun and the cutting down of the old so the new can spring to life.
30. Alle Psallite Cum Luya
in Paris in around 1300, is the largest source of medieval motets in the world.
Written for Revels by Susan Cooper in 1977, this poem is part of Christmas Revels performances
throughout the country.
32. Sussex Mummers Carol
Traditionally sung by the Christmas Mummers in the Horsham district of Sussex, England, this carol
has become a Revels tradition as it closes every Christmas Revels production. The brass arrangement
is by Brian Holmes, with descant and final verse harmonization by Ralph Vaughan Williams.
THANK YOU…
WHAT DOES IT TAKE FOR REVELS TO THRIVE? It takes all the donors on the previous pages, all the
volunteers on this page, all the players and production people, great and enthusiastic audiences and lots
of goodwill and encouragement in our community. Hurrah for Revels that all these things have come
together. Many of the people below have helped multiple times for multiple events, which include our
spring salons, spring sing, office organizing and cleaning, June brunch, Children’s Summer Solstice Play
Day, mailings, data entry, Abbots Bromliad, TacomaSings, Flinging Joy On-line Auction and Concert,
Christmas Revels production assistance AND the work of the Revels Board. Great, great thanks are due
to this stalwart band of volunteers.
Thanks to Tacoma Little Theater for loaning props; to First Methodist Church for loaning us their bells,
for the pews onstage and for lots of rehearsal space; to Dale Chesnut and Paul Birkey for rolling stock,
comraderie and encouragement; to The Washington State History Museum for their help and support of
our 20th Anniversary Concert. Many thanks to all the people at the Broadway Center, including the great
ticket office staff, for their support of the arts in Tacoma. And thanks, thanks, thanks to Revels, Inc and
all the Revels organizations across the country for partnering with us in the joyous work of cultivating
community through joy.
