DECEMBER 2012

NRC was established 45 years
ago. The New Resident Club
(NRC) was established in 1967
when Cape Coral was fairly
new. Helen Peck, an early resident,
believed Cape Coral
needed a means for new residents
to meet other new residents
and find local merchants.
She organized a monthly, hourlong
coffee at the Yacht Club.
The need for newcomers to meet
and exchange ideas and friendships
continues today as Cape
Coral has grown to a city of
about 170,000. And so the NRC
has grown to allow new residents
to enjoy the camaraderie
and information the club provides.
NRC supports Gift of Sight
program (OneSight). Please
bring used eyeglasses to the
New Resident Club’s monthly
meeting - a Gift of Sight box is
provided on the activities table
for your donation. The Gift of
Sight Program (now OneSight)
conducts clinics in developing
countries where doctors and
trained volunteers provide free
eye exams and recycled eyewear
to thousands of people in need.
For more information, log on to:
www.onesight.org.
WE NEED YOU - YES, YOU!
Please volunteer to help with the
duties of the club! Sign up to Be
a Greeter at the Dinner Dance
NRC NOTES AND ANNOUNCEMENTS
or Monthly Membership Meeting!
Look for the Volunteer Signup
Sheets on the tables! Perhaps you
have time to stay a few minutes
after the dance to Help Clean Up.
If you have a knack for design,
please Help Decorate for the next
Dinner Dance! If you can help, see
2nd Vice President Teresa
Anderson at the General Meeting,
or any Board Member.
NRC is a Caring Center
drop-off. Just a reminder that the
New Resident Club has a continuous
giving program which collects
canned goods and non-perishables
for the Cape Coral Caring Center
for distribution to those in need.
Please drop your donations in the
box at the Yacht Club. All
donations will be taken to the
Cape Coral Caring Center for
distribution. The wooden box is
large and white, marked with RED
lettering, It is located inside the
Yacht Club doors.
New Members are ALWAYS
Welcome! Membership is open
to all residents, partnered or single,
who have lived in Cape Coral
for three years or less. The two
year membership fee is only $35
per person. Please join us at the
Cape Coral Yacht Club for our
Monthly Membership Meeting the
first Tuesday of every month at
9:00 A.M. Come and meet new
friends, have fun and learn about
life in Paradise. For more infor-
mation, contact Debra Moreland
(contact information on page 4).
NRC Graduates
As a New Resident Club graduate
you are welcome to attend all
NRC meetings, activities and
events. You will continue to get
updates on all that is happening
with the NRC through our e-mail
system. You may opt out of
receiving these e-mails or update
changes to your contact information
at:
info@capecoralnewresidentclub.com.
After your membership in the
NRC expires, you have the option
to join the Cape Coral Social
December/January 2010: Later Gators
Reporter: Pat Backhaus
A big Thank You to Gail& Roger Novak for hosting an
outstanding Scavenger Hunt.It sure was a great idea for
something different as an activity. It was well thought out
and planned. The Puffer Worms were hidden in 10 of
Cape Coral's Parks. Groups were selected (no husband &
Wife teams) and sent out in cars at designated times with
their clues. Roses' team was the big winner and as you
can see by John's pic (he is wearing some of the prizes)
that a great time was had by all. Of course the party was
continued back at the Novak's residence after the Hunt.
There is never a shortage of fantastic food and spirits (not
that we do much drinking - Ha Ha).
Since many of our snowbirds were back, we had a large
turnout for the Ladies Luncheon at Woody's Surfside. Of
course, the Gators had to rearrange the furniture when we
arrived so we could all sit together.Us Gators seem to get
a second wind when our pals from up North are back in
Paradise. Most of the Gators attended the Comedy Night
at Anthony's on the 20th. We can't seem to get our fill of
partying as several us are planning on joining the Palm
Breezes for a Pub Crawl on Black Friday. That sure beats
standing in long shopping lines.
Happy Holidays to You All!!
Once again, the October dance was a big hit. Even though
I did not get to see the winners of the costumes, I heard
that it was a very hard decision to make as to the winners.
You all did such a grand job in the costume department
that Barb and Henry continued right on to their Masquer-
ade Pot Luck Dinner. Some of us could not be recognized
at all! The food was outstanding and we did have a ball.
Well, on to the next event we went, the Ladies Luncheon
at Woody’s was well attended and of course the prizes
were never ending. Fun was had by all!
Comedy night at Anthony’s on the Boulevard was overflowing
with the NRC members. So many, that the management
had to book an additional night for the people
that could not attend due to lack of room. The food was
great as usual and the laughter never stopped. Thanks to
the help of Cheryl and Steve Teal the new activity chair
person (Lars) made it through his first big event almost
without a hitch. You go Teals!!! Thanks for all your help.
OK, so this takes us to Thanksgiving and we all know
what that brings---more food and the spirits to go along
with all the goodies. Desserts will be plentiful and so will
the prayers and thanks for our lives as we know it now.
Thanks to the Military for keeping us safe.
Happy Holiday to you all!!! See you in December at the
NRC monthly meeting
The Halloween Dance was terrific which of course is not
at all unusual. What was unusual was the variety and
ingenuity that went into some of the costumes there. It
must have been really difficult for the judges to select the
winners. They all looked like winners to me!
The Ladies Luncheon at Woody’s was really nice. This
was my first time there and I really liked the atmosphere.
We had another record crowd, the luncheons are getting
so big, we’re going to run out of places big enough to
handle us pretty soon! But the places we’ve been have
really been up to the challenge. Great job by the luncheon

committees!
Hope everyone had a fantastic Thanksgiving! Today is
Black Friday and while everyone else is probably out
fighting the shopping crowds and spending lots of money,
I am relaxing with my second cup of coffee. Can’t be
lured into the frenzy. Instead we are going to the Sand
Sculpture championship on Ft. Myers Beach. Talk about
imagination! Those folks really have some exceptional
talent.
Cocktails on the Cape will also be at Woody’s on Pine
Island so I’m looking forward to seeing everyone, especially
our returning snowbirds, Linda & Jim! Welcome
back guys!
Sun Seekers
June-July 2011: Sun Seekers Reporter:
Randi Watkins**
Last month’s Pot Luck dinner was definitely one for
the ages. The theme was “Extravagance”, and everyone
brought the most decadent and delicious item
they could think of. We all scarfed-down lobster,
stone crab, filet mignon, truffles and the like, and
washed it all down by chugging several bottles of
vintage Dom Perignon. Of course, for a feast such
as this, only the most beautiful setting would do. So
we decided to hold it at the Vanderbilt mansion. In
hindsight, it probably would’ve been advisable to
give the residents some advance notice of our intentions,
but they were very gracious nonetheless– so
much so that we were allowed to finish our dinner
14
DECEMBER 2012
before being cuffed and hauled-off to spend the rest
of the evening in jail. But even with those nasty
trespassing charges now on our permanent records,
it was well worth it, as all our Sun Seeker events
have been.
**Ed. Note: As always, the Sun Seekers have a
wonderful sense of humor! And wouldn’t it be
fun if they really had these fantastic adventures?
Thanks, Sun Seekers, for always keeping
our readers well entertained!
Dec 2011/Jan 2012: The Stone Crabs
Reporter: Lori Voelker
With most of our snowbirds back in the Cape, our
monthly potluck held at the Moorings this month
was a great success! Everyone had a chance to reconnect
with old friends and catch up. Our next
dinner will be a Christmas Party on Saturday,
December 15th @ 3:00 being held at Jan& Bill
Kramer's, 1623 SW 43rd. Lane. Please RSVP by
Stone Crabs
December 6th to jangramanana@gmail.comwith
your selection and dish to pass. Bunco was held at
Lynn Walker's with a loud crowd of women trying
to beat Elly Wroblewski's run of luck. The next
game will be held in January at a location to be announced.
Comedy Night at Anthony's had Stone

Crabs laughing and enjoying great food. We are
asking that anyone going to the Holiday Dinner
Dance in September bring an ornament or decoration
for the Stone Crab's table. Hope to see everyone
there!
Royal Palms
February 2012: The Royal Palms
Reporter: Ann Banash
The Royal Palms are alive and well! When the
Snowbirds left in the Spring we were leaderless
and shirtless and wondered if we were a group at a
ll. Thanks to Josette and John Campo and Doris
and Bill Awine, over 20 hearty souls gathered at a
Pot Luck at Celebration Cape's beautiful pavilion
to renew frendships and feast on wonderful food
and a most decadent table of desserts. Realizing
that two can do it better than one, two couples will
host each month and decide what activity to do.
Volunteers for December, January, February and
April are already in place and we hope that some
of the snowbirds who haven't yet returned will
take March. We're still shirtless, but we're together
and looking forward to a great season!
May/June 2012: Sand Dollars Reporter:
Shirley Heselton
Hope everybody had a great Thanksgiving. This
past month’s potluck was held at Jon Hale’s new
15
DECEMBER 2012
home and was terrific, both the food and the
space. Not only were the Sand Dollars in attendance,
but members from several other groups
as well. Huge success! Everybody had fun, although
I was a bit disappointed that no one
tested out the heated pool. It seems that no matter
how much drinking gets done, no one as of
yet has taken a plunge, even when invited to do
so.
I’d like to thank board 90 for their hard work
and congratulate board 91 for the seamless transition.
Once again NRC ladies had a wonderful
luncheon. This month’s luncheon was at
Woody’s. I can’t speak for all of the ladies, but
no one was complaining at my table. Unfortunately
I can’t speak for game night this month as
I was unable to make it, and this month’s dance
is still a week away.
However we did get into the spirit for last
Sand Dollars
month’s Halloween Dance and most of us came
as hippies. It seems that most of us still remember
way back when and some of us are still waiting
for the style to come back. It amazed me
how many had stuff in their closets from the 60s
that they couldn’t part with. Nostalgia!
Happy Holidays To All!

The CoCo Nutz
July/August 2012: The CoCo Nutz Reporter:
Ray Kurka
The fabulous CoCo Nutz are alive and well in Cape
Coral. In October, Craig & Barb Williamson hosted
a potluck at their lovely home. The weather was
perfect and the affair was well attended. Barb &
Craig decimated local poultry farms by the amount
of great bar-b-qued chicken and a crock pot pork
dish that was tender and delicious. Of course, there
were salads, side dishes, and desserts, The party
was enjoyed by all.
On November 16 th , a pizza bash was hosted by Ray
& Jeanette Kurka. Of course we picked the
coolest day this fall, but most people were ready for
it, Ray’s idea of making all the pizzas for the party
took a wrong turn when the pizza dough that ate
Cleveland presented a problem. The dough started
to expand in the fridge. It refused to be beaten into
submission. We had all the ingredients ready and
no crust!. A emergency call to Crust Pizza down
the street saved the day. They were delicious and
probably better than any thing we put together. The
rest of the evening went great.
A brief visit from Wilson’s (our coconut mascot).
Ex wife showed up and it was tense for a while.
She will not make another appearance.
September 2012: It’s 5 O’Clock Somewhere,
Reporter: Nancy Lyons
The 5 O’Clock Somewhere group continue to enjoy
our time in paradise, getting to know one another as
well as others who make up the New Residents
Club. NRC members are not kidding when they say
that there is something to do almost every day – it
can be exhilarating – and a bit exhausting. I mean,
we’re retired, right? I never pictured retirees running
from one activity to another with such gusto.
And having so much fun every day!
The Halloween dance was a great time and our own
leader, Pat Wood and his wife, Lori, wowed everyone
with their spot-on costumes as Thurston Howell,
III and Mrs. Howell as part of the Gilligan’s
Island crew.
5 O’Clock Somewhere
We held our November potluck at Richee B’s –it
was another night of good food and great companionship.
Shirts were distributed and we are looking
forward to the first event where we can all wear
them. There was discussion on a mascot – look for
ours at the December monthly NRC meeting.
Many 5 O’Clockers headed north for Thanksgiving
or hosted family here in paradise. Spike McIver
spent his days before Thanksgiving deep frying
turkeys that he donated to fire houses around Cape
Coral – proving once again that his heart is a big as

his home state of Texas. Lori Wood has traded in
her mom car for some sexy new wheels – check
them out if you get a chance.
Our group would like to wish every at NRC a joyous
holiday season and New Year – thanks for
making us feel so welcome. In the words of the big
guy way up north,“HO, HO, HO and enjoy your
Holidays….. because it’s 5 o’clock somewhere!”
October 2012: The Coco Locos
Reporter: Jean Matthews
A special thanks goes to Joe and Nina Mirtel for
hosting our November 2012 potluck dinner at their
lovely home. Not only did they host the event but
they prepared the most wonderful appetizers along
with preparing the most scrumptious roasted
chicken breasts. The salads, side dishes and desserts
prepared by group members were also impressive
as always. After dinner we got settled into
the mode of selecting an official color for our
CoCo Locos shirts and the decision was to go with
the teal green color but it appears after meeting
with the vendor that some other group had selected
the same color so we are back to square one. I am
sure that we will come to a new selection color in
the near future and will move forward.
The Coco Locos
DECEMBER 2012
Our leader Jim Marlow organized a CoCo Locos
EcoWalk at the Fourmile Cove Ecology Park off
Del Prado at the Veterans Memorial Statue. He
also has created a list of“Events of Interest” in the
Cape Coral area which has proven beneficial to our
members in keeping everyone informed of all the
many activities that are available to us. We are so
fortunate that we have such a great group of friends
who has made our transition to the area a very
meaningful experience. We have so much to be
thankful for as the Thanksgiving Holiday descends
upon us and new friends have to be added to the
top of the list. I look forward to meeting with everyone
next month and hope that .everyone has a
wonderful and safe holiday.
The Dreamers
November 2012: The Dreamers
Reporter: Cathy Baker
We had our first "official" get together hosted by
Cheri Dunlapp, even after her husband Doug was
called to help with the Red Cross in N.J. Thank
you, Cheri & Doug, for letting us into your beautiful
home We decided on an appetizer pot luck as
with so many of us in this new group - thought it
would be easier to mingle and eat. A wide and
abundant selection of delicious food was enjoyed
by everyone so it was agreed our next meet up
would be the same, at the home of Debbie and
Steve Merz.
We chose our leader, Dave Looysen or rather he
kind of accepted his fate! Thank you so
much,Dave! Our group name is the Dreamers with
the motto of "Living the Dream." Maui Blue will
be our color and we have some good ideas for a

logo. Ann Tobin stepped up to take care of the
ordering. Thanks Ann! Linda Lanza and Barbara
Farrington requested to be activity chairs asking
everyone for suggestions of fun things for us all to
do in the future. Thank you both, we are looking
forward to having a lot of fun times together. The
Dreamers are a big group, with a total of 41 signed
up as of now.
Our future looks bright as we start "Living the
Dream".
Happy Holidays to all!!
October 2012: Cape Crusader
including the New Years' Eve bash. In January
Melanie and Jim Voris will be hosting the Pot
Luck dinner once again. The date/time and theme
will be announced to all members. PLEASE always
RSVP to these potlucks. It helps the hosts
know how much main course to prepare and the
guests how much side dishes to prepare.
Thanks and hope to see all the Caped Crusaders at
the NRC bashes and in January at the pot luck.
NRC MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
Greetings to members of the New Resident Club (NRC) of Cape Coral:
Holiday Season Message from the President.
Happy Holidays to all our NRC Members from Board 91 !
19
DECEMBER 2012
First, I would like to give a “Special” Thank-You to all the Board Members for their hard work
and dedication toward all our NRC activities and events this holiday season. It’s a very busy
time of year for family and friends and your work to our club is deeply appreciated and
supported as we continue to lead our club into the future.
If this is your first holiday season since you have moved here, I want you to know you’re not
alone and I personally invite you into our NRC family of events for the month of December. I
encourage everyone, including all the groups leaders to reach out to the newer members,
especially the ones that are celebrating their first holiday season here in Cape Coral. We want
you to know you’re not an orphan in paradise! Please suggest and encourage some things to do
together like pot lucks, small get-togethers, maybe going out to dinner to share the holiday
spirit! The strength of our club comes from participation, encouragement and support by all our
members, because that is what friends are all about!
Thanks again, for all your continued support and participation in our club.
Now let’s go out and have some fun!
