Many Attend H.S.
Music Festival
By ANN MODERSOHN
An almost full house witnessed
the annual music festival at Millburn
high school last Friday evening.
One unusual thing about this
year's festival was the transparent
scrim behind which the Senior
Chorus could be seen and heard
singing- the "Nutcracker Suite."
Painted by a committee from the
art department, this scrim told the
story of the "Nutcracker Suite" in
effective pictures.
In addition to the Senior Chorus,
the Junior Chorus, Senior Girls'
Octet, Girls' and Boys' Glee Clubs,
and various soloists also performed.
Among the soloists at the piano
were Ethel Fern, Natalie Silverstein,
and Wilhelm Goetz, a seventh
grader, who played one of his
own compositions as an encore.
The Senior Chorus was accompanied,
at different times, by dancing
girls, a flutist, and a piccolo
player.
Since the festival included several
different types of music, it was
planned to appeal to people of widely
different tastes. For those who
like popular hits, there were songs
from the show "Oklahoma". Fred
Waring's arrangement of "I Dream
of You" was also sung. Contrasted
with this was a group of religious
numbers.
Many students who thought they
didn't care > for classical music
doubtlessly had their minds
changed by the Senior Chorus's
rendition of the "Nutcracker
Suite". One number that seemed
to appeal to everyone was "Madame
Jeannette", a French song.
The entire concert was under the
direction of Gabriel Chiodo, who
came to MiOburn this year from
The Millburn £ Short Hills ITEM
I South Jersey. Before the performance
all the students who , participated
in the concert presented
him with a watch as a token of
their appreciation.
Fourth Graders
Write Book
Two fourth grade students from
Wyoming School, Eddie Hirsch
and Bruce Nathan, have recently
completed writing and illustrating
a book entitled "District Commis-
sioner" which was published with
the aid. of their fathers. They are
the sons of Mr. and Mrs. Albert
Hinsch of 9 Roserale avenue ana
Mr. and Mrs. Robert Nathan of
Reeve circle.
"District Commissioner" was
written primarily by Eddie with
editing and illustration by Robert.
It took them three months of collaboration
to complete the three
stories about Woodinnick, a
wooden mannequin actually owned
by Eddie.
They are now selling the book,
which is written about and fox
children, at twenty-five cents'a
copy. Part of the proceeds are going
to the Red Cross. There were
116 copies printed and the boys
have so lar netted over $18 from
sales.
We recited poetry from famous
