Workshop Rationale and Theme
We are pleased to announce the 12 th Workshop
on Sustainable Horticultural Production in the
Tropics. The theme of the workshop is ‘How
should we teach in horticulture courses? From
frontal teaching to problem based learning’.
Training and research provide the requisite human
resource and technological solutions to support
the horticulture sector. It is therefore important that
training and research are aligned to the needs of
the sector. This year’s workshop shall focus on
methodology in horticulture training and research.
This will complement last year’s workshop where
content was covered.
Other topics of importance to horticulture shall
also be covered. The workshop is divided into
categories and sub-themes (topics) as follows:
ISSUES IN TRAINING AND RESEARCH
[A1] Practical training
[A2] Research
[A3] Extension and technology transfer
[A4] Higher and middle level training
[A5] Delivery methodology e.g. e-delivery
[A7] Examinations and evaluation
[A8] Certifying bodies of horticultural products
ORIGINAL RESEARCH AND REVIEWS
Research work in the following areas:
[B1] Horticultural production,
[B2] Crop protection and nutrition,
[B3] Marketing issues,
[B4] Socio-economic and environmental issues
Venue
The workshop will take place at Bondo University
College, which is located 70 km from Kisumu, the
third Kenyan City. Bondo University is located a
short distance from Kogello, the village where
President Obama’s father hails from.
Format
The workshop shall be accomplished through oral
presentations, panel discussions and posters.
There will also be excursions to selected
horticultural production and scenic sites.

On the first day of the workshop, participants will
be provided with books of abstracts having a
comprehensive program for the workshop.
The workshop language is English.
Exhibitions
Facilities and space for exhibiting technologies
and products from the horticultural sector will be
provided.
Application Procedure
Stakeholders are encouraged to participate in this
critical event through: Presentation, Exhibition
and/or Attendance. Applications may be made

Where applicants are unable to use the system,
they may send their abstracts to the organisers by
e-mail: hak@agr.jkuat.ac.ke, hak.2006@yahoo.com
The deadline for receiving abstracts is September
30 th , 2012. The abstracts should be in English
language. They should not be more than 300
words and in MS Word (.doc) or rich text format
(.rtf). The abstract should contain the aim(s),
methodology, results, discussion and conclusion.
They should include a title, name(s) of the
author(s), affiliation, mailing address, e-mail
address and telephone number(s). Authors should
also state the sub-theme and indicate their
preference for oral or poster presentation.
Acceptance will be communicated to authors by
October 15 th 2012. The closing date for receiving
full papers shall be November 15 th , 2012.
African Journal of Horticultural

Papers submitted for the workshop shall be
considered for publication in the African Journal of
Horticultural Science.
