Volleyball Opening Home
Season Against St. Mary’s
After winning the Carson-
Newman tournament last weekend
in Tennessee, the Texas A&M-
Kingsville volleyball team will
open its home season Wednesday
night when it hosts St. Mary’s in
the Steinke Center.
Match time is 7 p.m.
It will open a busy week for
the Javelinas.
They will be in the Texas
Woman’s tournament in Denton
Friday and Saturday, facing four
opponents.
The Javelinas swept four
matches in the tournament,
defeating each by 3-0 scores. The
victims were Davis & Elkins (W.
Va.), Charleston (W. Va.), Glenville
(W. Va.) State and host Carson-
Newman (Tenn.).
St. Mary’s opened last
weekend with a 1-3 record in its
own tournament.
The Rattler victory came over
Millersville (Pa.) and the losses
were to Central Oklahoma, Florida
Southern and Metropolitan
(Colo.) State.
In their matchups last year,
the Javelinas downed the Rattlers
twice, 3-0 and 3-1.
The TWU tournament will
see the Javelinas taking on Texas-
Permian Basin at 11 a.m. Friday
(Continued on Page 8)
The Texas A&M-Kingsville
football team will face its first
Lone Star Conference opponent
this week when it takes on East
Central Saturday at 7 p.m. in
Javelina Stadium.
But it won’t count in the LSC
standings, for the Javelinas. The
game will be a conference
encounter for the Tigers.
This is the final season when
three of the LSC South Division
teams take on North Division
squads in games that count for
the North clubs but not their
South counterparts.
The Javelinas are coming off
a 28-17 upset victory over Delta
(Miss.) State in the season opener
last weekend in Javelina Stadium.
This will be the second of
four consecutive home
appearances for the Javelinas as
they enter the 2009 season.
East Central will be on the
road for the second consecutive
week, having dropped a 48-0
decision to Nebraska-Omaha last
week in Omaha.
This will be the 17
.
th meeting
of the Javelinas and Tigers, the
first having come in 1941.
The Javelinas hold a 13-3
series lead and downed the
Tigers, 44-14, last year in Ada,
WOW!!!
What an opening weekend for the 2009-10 Javelina sports year.
First the volleyball team goes to Tennessee and wins four games in the Carson-
Newman Tournament, and each in a sweep. The squad was 12-0 in the two days of
competition.
Then the football team knocks off the No. 3 team in the country before an
enthusiastic crowd in Javelina Stadium. The big win came after a well-attended
tailgate party that has seen its territory expanded this year.
And the Gene Upshaw Day capped off the weekend’s activities. Several
members of Gene’s family were present for the halftime retiring of his Javelina jersey.
Former Javelina quarterback James Guidry represented the NFL at the ceremony.
He is with the NFL Players Association in Washington D.C.
Gerald Irons, former teammate of Gene’s, represented Oakland owner Al Davis
and the Raiders at the event.
Great, great weekend and hopefully just the start of what will be lots of big
weekends, and weekdays, this year.
HOW GREAT IT was to have Old Smokey at the game last weekend, and the
ROTC cannon will be around for all of the home games this season.
This is one of the things at the home games that have ties with several
generations of Javelinas.
Old Smokey has been a part of the home scene for decades.
It was banished, along with the “artificial noise makers”, at all Lone Star
Conference events for years but common sense has prevailed and these important
parts of the spirit scene have been welcomed back.
THIS WEEKEND’S FOOTBALL game will have a military theme.
Saturday will be Armed Forces Day and several activities are planned.
There will be flyovers at the tailgate party and game and each of the military
branches will be represented during a halftime ceremony.
With numerous Javelinas having had outstanding military careers and with the
Naval Air Station in Kingsville, the athletic department and University having close ties
with the armed forces, Saturday’s event will allow everyone to celebrate this
connection.
THE LONE STAR Conference needs to strongly consider having a “Game of the
Week” on FOXSports Southwest during football season.
Abilene Christian got the league great publicity last week and allowed people
throughout the Southwest an opportunity to see the caliber of football being played in
the league.
A game each week would gain the LSC a lot of new fans, and would also help the
recruiting efforts of the 13 schools (soon to be 14) that have football programs.
The games would probably have to be played on Thursday night but there’s
nothing wrong with that.
AN INTERESTING STATISTIC that came out of last week’s telecast of the
Abilene Christian game with Northwest Missouri was the number of national titles
won by the Lone Star Conference and Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic
Association.
These are two rival leagues in the same NCAA region in most sports.
The LSC has produced 71 national championship teams and the MIAA has had
13.
Many of the LSC championships have come by ACU in track and field, indoor and
outdoor. (Continued on Page 3)
THE SPORTING NEWS had its NFL preview in the latest issue and one of the
features was the selection of all-division teams for each of the league’s divisions.
Javelinas Roberto Garza and Al Harris were on the all-division team in the NFL
North.
Garza, with the Chicago Bears, was one of the two offensive guards and Harris,
a Green Bay Packer, was one of the two cornerbacks chosen.
THE JAVELINAS WILL be meeting their neighbors to the East in several sports
this year.
The cross country team will be running against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi,
including at the Islander Splash later this month.
The outdoor track and field team will also compete with the Islanders several
times in the spring.
The Javelina softball squad will host TAMUCC Oct. 3 for a scrimmage
doubleheader at Hubert Field.
And the Javelina baseball team will take on the Islanders March 2 at Whataburger
Field in Corpus Christi.
ONE OF THE NCAA Division II postseason bowl games has been discontinued.
The Dixie Rotary Bowl in Utah blamed a weak economy and an inability to raise
enough sponsorship dollars to support bowl operations as the reasons for cancelling
the 23-year-old game.
It started out as a junior college bowl game and then became Division II in 2006.
Teams from the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference and Great Northwest
Athletic Conference participated in the event.
TWO MORE FRIENDS of the Javelina athletic department died last week.
Dan Daniels of Corpus Christi was instrumental in the forming of the Javelina
football radio networks in the 1980s and thanks to his help, the network reached 12
stations one year.
Dan contacted friends who owned stations throughout the South Texas area and
got them onboard for the network.
At that time, you could hear the Javelinas in most areas South of a line from
Houston to San Antonio to Eagle Pass.
He also worked with the athletic department in producing videos in football.
Dan was a captain in the U.S. Navy and retired after 30 years of service.
Dan and I were friends in Paris when I was the sports editor of the Paris News
and he worked at one of the radio stations. I came to South Texas in 1968 and Dan
took a position at a radio station in Corpus Christi three years later. Our friendship
was renewed and has continued for the past 38 years.
Dan was in Kingsville on many occasions not only for Javelina athletic events but
also to broadcast high school football and basketball games.
He died Aug. 21 in Corpus Christi and services were held in Corpus Christi.
Burial was in Powderly, a few miles north of Paris.
Ray Mooney died Aug. 22 in Kingsville.
He was one of the key members of the Javelina Track and Field Association in
the 1980s when that group had 20-25 members certified to work the top track and
field meets in the state.
Ray worked at numerous meets in Javelina Stadium.
Reid Harter, the highly successful coach of the Javelina track and field and cross
country teams in the 1980s, said, “Ray was a good guy and very helpful to me when
I was track coach.”
running back Chris Pryor of San Antonio Judson.
TEXAS A&M-KINGSVILLE IS one of the schools that has been selected to join
NCAA Division II’s strategic initiatives with awards for community-engagement and
game-environment.
As a part of its Game-Environment Recognition Program, Division II is offering
schools a banner that proclaims their commitment to promoting a family-friendly
atmosphere at athletic contests.
Schools must complete a rigorous self-assessment to acquire the banner and then
must live up to the tenets of the program.
Institutions receive the banner only after the president or chancellor and the
athletic director acknowledge that they have considered and discussed a selfassessment
tool covering coach, spectator, student and support-group behavior.
The self-assessment challenges institutional personnel to address relevant areas
including those that don’t relate directly to sportsmanship, to ensure that athletic
events reflect well on the institution and promote the values of higher education.
The self-assessment demands a campus-wide approach to complete, much like
the division’s compliance and self-study examinations. For most athletic
departments, it’s another way to raise awareness, and attendance, at athletic events.
TAMUK is one of two Lone Star Conference schools that have obtained a gameenvironment
banner. The other is Cameron.
The other schools are Alaska-Fairbanks, Arkansas Tech, Bemidji (Minn.) State,
NCAA DIVISION II notes:
…..The NCAA Playing Rules Oversight Panel has approved the NCAA
Baseball Rules Committee’s recommendation to remove, at least temporarily,
composite bats from NCAA competition.
The committee’s main concern is that the composite bats are susceptible to
performance improvement above standards set by the NCAA, either through normal
use or alterations to the bats.
During the 2009 NCAA Division I baseball championship, composite bats were
selected for ball exit speed ratio certification tests. Of the 25 bats tested, 20 failed the
official test for current NCAA performance levels.
Because all bat designs must pass that test before mass production, the results
indicated that the performance of such bats changed thereafter, most likely due to
repeated, normal use or intentional alteration.
…..The NCAA has addressed the swimsuit controversy that emerged during the
recent world championships.
In NCAA competition, suit construction is restricted to textiles or a woven
material. Suit coverage is limited to between the waist and kneecap for men and
between the shoulder and kneecap for women.
The new standards require materials to be 100 percent permeable to both air and
water and be no more than .8 millimeters thick.
…..Le Moyne (N.Y.) broke ground last week on a state-of-the-art
multipurpose turf complex. It will serve as the home of the men’s and women’s
soccer and lacrosse programs.
It is part of the school’s New Heights Campaign that has exceeded the original
goal of $50 million by $35 million.
Waiting for the Javelinas
These two Porky’s Pack members wait for the arrival of the Javelina
football team so they can help lead them onto the field at last weekend’s
game in Javelina Stadium.
reasons for excitement surrounding East
Central’s football team.
While the Tigers have a new coach that
brings a fresh attitude, he’s actually a
familiar face. Tim McCarty returns to the
sidelines for his second stint as ECU head
coach after leaving the school for three
years as Kansas State’s top assistant.
But McCarty is back and ready to turn
things around in Ada.
“I’m rejuvenated and ready to go,”
McCarty said. “We had a productive
spring and a lot of kids out there. We know
we’ve got a long ways to go, but we’re
focused and we’ve got a lot of enthusiasm.
We’re ready to move the program forward.”
And the player who should help the
most in that process is senior quarterback
Marcus Johnson, the two-time North
Division offensive back of the year and the
favorite to win the award for a third
consecutive year.
Johnson runs the show for the Tigers
but does through the air. He passed for
3,110 yards and 20 touchdowns last season.
He owns school records for passing yards
(5,618), completions (525) and has twice
Armed Forces Day Saturday
The Texas A&M-Kingsville athletic
department will celebrate Armed Forces Day
Saturday at the Javelina home football game
with East Central.
Game time will be 7 p.m. in Javelina
Stadium.
At halftime of the game, there will be an
official signing ceremony of a “Community
Covenant of Kleberg County Armed
Forces.”
The proclamation states that “the
citizens of Kleberg County, businesses and
the University are committed to building
partnerships that support the strength,
resilience and readiness of our service
members and their families and assisting in
the implementation of the Armed Forced
Community Covenant”.
Taking part in the on-field signing will
be State Rep. Tara Rios-Ybarra; Kleberg
County Judge Pete DeLaGarza; Kingsville
Mayor Sam Fugate; Kingsville Independent
thrown for six touchdowns in a game.
“He’s a fine quarterback who has put
up a lot of impressive numbers,” McCarty
said of Johnson. “But the biggest thing I
noticed was his leadership skills in the
spring. He really asserted himself in that
area. We expect big things out of that
position.”
At running back, the Tigers are looking
at several players to carry the load
including Joshua Maldanado, who had 10
touchdowns last year. And watch out for
newcomers John Gaines and freshman
Maurice Cotton.
The Tigers are excited about wide
receiver Alvin Barnett, a transfer from
Colorado, but also get last year’s lead
receiver Tyrone Gibbs (42 catches, 528
yards), along with Jerold Loveless (461
yards).
The offensive line is anchored by All-
LSC first-team pick Justin Nail, who could
net some All-America honors this year.
Inside, look for Craig and Chad Roark to
man the middle at guard and center.
Defensively, McCarty says the Tigers
The Wildcats suffered through a down
year in 2008, finishing fifth in the LSC
the regional meet.
Juniors Lindsey Putman and Dorothy
Tuttle are the Wildcats’ only returning
athletes while the roster features six
freshmen.
East Central men
Third-year coach Steve Sawyer should
have some talent, albeit young talent, to
continue a strong tradition of success for
ECU’s cross country team.
The Tigers placed fourth in last year’s
LSC meet, ending a string of six straight
runnerup finishes. Junior Jim Sutrick had
impressive times in both the conference and
regional meets.
He’ll be joined by junior running Daniel
Kiptoo.
The lone senior on this year’s squad is
Tyler Jackson but juniors Armondo Saldivar
and Stefan Terrell should provide
experience.
East Central women
In hopes of improving on last year’s
third-place finish at the LSC
championships, coach Steve Sawyer is
counting on a pair of seniors to lead the
way. (Continued on Page 9)
Javelinas in the Crowd
Players and coaches from the early 1960s Javelina football teams were in
conference meet while Silvia Barkechir was 15 th .
Senior Alex Kirkpatrick will also
provide leadership as will junior Carina
Clemente and sophomore Jessica Nguyen.
Texas A&M-Commerce men
This could be a big season for the
Lions, coached by Karen Prisby, A&M-
Commerce finished fifth in both the LSC
championships and NCAA South Central
regionals last year.
Most of the team returns, including
Tyler Tyndell and Robert Reed.
The Lions also return Brandon
Womack and Geraldo Delafuente, two more
solid runners with experience.
Texas A&M-Commerce women
Senior runner Kate Donovan is
expected to lead the way for the Lions’
cross country team this fall.
Donovan has been the team’s top
runner for each of the last two years.
Commerce head coach Karen Prisby is
also hoping for strong seasons from
newcomers Jennifer Speer and Maci
Bradford.
West Texas A&M men
To improve on last year’s eighth-place
conference finish, cross country coach Paul
Sweetgall knows he must rely on several
underclassmen.
With lone senior Jarret Kachel on the
roster, the Buffaloes have six freshmen and
three sophomores making up the squad.
West Texas was picked seventh in the
preseason polls and will have some
experienced runners. Juniors Thomas
Harris and Aaron Hibbits return along with
sophomores Andrew Stiley, Josh Braddock
and Jarred Murray.
Tailgating Fun
Hundreds of fans attended the first Javelina tailgate party last weekend prior to the opening game in Javelina
Stadium. The activity has become one of the most popular on campus during the school year.

Despite many experienced and
successful head coaches with strong
pedigrees already in the Lone Star
Conference, one of the most prestigious
coaches in the conference is entering his
first season.
But that doesn’t make Texas A&M-
Commerce head coach Guy Morriss a
stranger to LSC football.
Morriss, a former head coach at
Kentucky and Baylor, has East Texas ties
and knows a thing or two about the history
of the LSC and more importantly, the
current crop of talent.
“I grew up watching some of these
teams,” Morriss said. “I remember
Commerce when they were East Texas State.
And I blocked for guys like Wilbert
Montgomery (former Abilene Christian
player). So I know this conference has
great players.
“I know we’ve got some of the very
best teams on this level. It’s going to be a
challenge because from top to bottom, you
have a tough game every week.”
Lone Star Conference Football Prospectus Series
In fact, Morriss sounds like he knows a
little more about the conference overall than
he does his current team. With so many
players missing spring practice because of
eligibility and transfer reasons, Morriss is
trying to find a few answers about the core
of his team.
“We had a lot of guys who were only
here part-time in the spring and some other
players who we’re counting on that we’ve
never seen, so we don’t know anything
about them,” Morriss said. “We have some
big question marks but I’m excited just to
get back out there again and find out how
we’re going to be.”
What he thinks he can count on is a
strong defense, anchored by defensive
tackle William Green, the preseason LSC
North co-defensive player of the year. In
2008, Green clogged the middle for the
Lions’ defense, recording 27 tackles (8.5 for
loss) and four sacks.
Senior outside linebacker Chad
Washington earned first-team All-LSC
honors last year after posting 59 tackles.
Second-team All-LSC safety Alex Contreras
returns for his third season as a starter.
On offense, the Lions must replace allconference
quarterback Terry Mayo and
have three candidates battling in practice,
Brock Becomes Coach for TAMUK
Track & Field, Cross Country Team
David Brock, who has served as a high
school track and field coach and cross
country coach for the past 36 years, has
joined the Texas A&M-Kingsville track and
field and cross country program as a
volunteer coach.
Ryan Dall, Javelina head track and field
and cross country coach, announced the
addition to his staff.
Brock, from Kingsville, holds
bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Texas
A&I.
He began his coaching career at Runge
High School where he was a football,
basketball and track and field coach for two
years.
Brock coached the same sports at
Medina High School for one year and at
Falls City High School for 28 years.
He has been the track and field and
cross country coach at H.M. King High
School in Kingsville for the past five years.
Brock is a member of the U.S. Track and
Field and Cross Country Coaches
but none of them threw a pass for the Lions
last year. A&M-Commerce is hoping
someone between Ried Herchenbach,
Darby House and Adam Farkes steps up to
become the primary signal caller.
At running back, the Lions are
counting on returning lettermen Marcus
Graham and Jamar Mosley but also have a
Association and the Texas High School
Coaches Association.
He is married and he and his wife,
Janis, a member of the Javelina Club board
of directors, have two sons, Cory of San
Antonio and Kirby of Kingsville.
The anchor of the offensive line is
senior tackle R.J. Brigson, the co-offensive
lineman of the year last season.
Senior punter Juan Velasco was a
second-team All-LSC selection last season,
averaging 42.3 yards a punt.
