Walkers wear PJs to honor PJ
Linda Armon-Reynolds, Jessica White and Jan Armon were defi nitely the
“talk of the walk” Oct. 7 at the Memory Walk in North Idaho.
The three women turned out in pajamas to walk in memory of Patricia Jean (PJ)
Armon. Jan and Linda are daughters and Jessica is the niece of Patricia Jean, who
contracted Alzheimer’s disease at the tender age of 53. Patty lived with her daughter
Jan after her diagnosis until Jan was no longer able
to care for her.
Jan talks about how challenging life had
been in her caregiving and how the Alzheimer’s
Association was a huge help to her. She frequently
needed to refer to the wonderfully thorough book
“The 36 Hour Day,” and highly recommends it to
all caregivers. Patty died of Alzheimer’s disease
on her 64th birthday. Jan and Linda are concerned
deeply about the prevalent incidence of Alzheimer’s
disease, as their mother, great-grandmother and
great-great-grandmother all had dementia. They
continue to be actively involved in the fi ght against
Alzheimer’s disease by participating in our North
Idaho Memory Walk.
We all loved how you identifi ed your team with your cozy PJs!
Recognizing Pain in Someone with Dementia
Pain in people with dementia is often undertreated
because they cannot communicate where they hurt.
Overlooked pain can increase dementia symptoms and
decrease quality of life. Common conditions causing
pain include arthritis, broken bones, common colds, dental
conditions, falls, infections and prostate problems.
These tips can help caregivers determine if their
loved one is in pain.
Signs of pain:
• Physical expressions: bracing, restlessness, rocking, limping,
slow movement, rigid posture, decreased activity,
staying in bed and resistance to care
• Verbal expressions: crying, moaning, sighing, yelling,
screaming, words of discomfort (“ouch” or “that hurts”)
and words of protest (“stop”)
• Facial expressions: clenched teeth, grimacing,
dropped jaw, narrow or closed eyes, sad face, tightened
lips, wincing
• Behavior changes: agitation, irritability, mood swings,
social withdrawal, poor appetite and sleeplessness
Treating pain:
• Consider verbal complaints of pain reliable and
valid. Acknowledge the person’s pain and reassure
him or her that you will help.
• Take your loved one to the doctor to assess the source
and levels of pain and determine treatment.
• Use nondrug approaches to ease pain, including
relaxation, physical activities, heat therapy
and massage.
• Try simple interventions. For example, a sore
mouth may require a trip to the dentist or betterfi
tting dentures.
Juices May Reduce Alzheimer’s Disease Risk
Vanderbilt University researchers have found that
people who drank three or more servings of fruit and
vegetable juices per week had a 76 percent lower risk
of developing Alzheimer’s disease than those who
drank juice less than once a week.
The researchers collected information on dietary
consumption of fruit and vegetable juices
by nearly 1,900 dementia-free subjects
in Seattle, then tested cognitive function
every two years for up to 10 years. The
study participants were part of a larger
cross-cultural study that investigated
Alzheimer’s disease and vascular dementia
in older Japanese populations
living in Japan, Hawaii and Seattle.
With some recent clinical studies questioning
the hypothesis that high in-
www.inwalza.org
takes of antioxidant vitamins might protect against
Alzheimer’s disease, researchers began to suspect
that chemicals known as polyphenols could play a
role. Most polyphenols exist primarily in the skins
and peels of fruits and vegetables. Recent studies
have shown that polyphenols (such as reservatrol
in wine) extend maximum lifespan by 59 percent
and delay age-dependent decay of cognitive performance
in animal models.
The next research step will be testing of the
subjects’ blood samples to see if elevated levels
of polyphenols are related to a reduced risk of
cognitive decline and Alzheimer’s disease.
This would provide further evidence
of the role of juice polyphenols in
Alzheimer’s disease risk. It also
may point to the types of juice
that would be most benefi cial.
Tips for Communicating with Someone with Dementia
Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias can gradually
diminish a person’s ability to communicate. These
tips may help you understand each other better:
• Be calm and supportive. If the person is having
trouble communicating, let the person know that
it’s OK.
• Focus on feelings, not facts. Sometimes
the emotions expressed are more important
than what is said.
• Pay attention to your tone of voice. A
gentle or relaxed tone is more calming.
• Address the person by their name. Besides
being courteous, it orients the person
and gets his or her attention.
• Speak slowly and use short, simple
words. Keep to the point to avoid
overwhelming the person with lengthy requests or
stories.
• Ask one question at a time. Too many questions at once
may be overwhelming or confusing.
• Avoid vague words and negative statements. Instead
of saying, “Here it is,” try saying, “Here
is your hat.”
• Don’t talk about the person as if he or
she weren’t there. Treat the person with
dignity and respect.
• Use unspoken communication. If you
don’t understand what is being said, ask
the person to point or gesture.
• Be patient, fl exible and understanding.
Let the person know you’re listening and
trying to understand what is being said.
Welcome to Garry Matlow and Sandi Druffel
The Chapter Offi ce in Spokane has
had a few changes. Last March,
Bonnie Caldwell, our Development
Director, became very ill and
left the Chapter on medical leave.
Bonnie is doing much better today,
but she is unable return to her position
as our Development Director
on a full-time basis. Bonnie has
graciously asked to be a volunteer
with our gala in March.
We suffered another loss as Jan
West, our Program Assistant, left
the Chapter in May for another
position here in Spokane. Jan gave
so much to the Chapter and we appreciate
all of her hard work. She
will be missed.
We welcome Garry Matlow to our
team as the new Communications
and Program Assistant. Garry has
many years of successful experience
in nonprofi t management and
communications. Garry came to us
from The Arc of Spokane, where he
was a Communications Specialist.
Before working at The Arc, Garry
served as the Assistant Director of
Ronald McDonald House Charities
of Spokane. Garry is originally from
Florida and has lived in Spokane for
the past 11 years with his wife Annie.
Watch out: he is still a Gator fan
but he does hold a public relations
certifi cate from EWU and he does
occasionally wear a Seahawks tie.
Another great addition to our team
is Sandi Druffel. Sandi is our new
Development Director. Sandi also
has considerable experience in
fundraising. She came to us from
Gonzaga Preparatory School, where
she served as the Campaign Director.
Sandi also worked for the American
Cancer Society as the Community
Development Manager. Sandi was
born and raised in Genesee, Idaho,
and has lived in Spokane for the past
30 years with her husband Steve.
Association helps reverse Medco drug plan policy
In response to an Association letter to the Centers
for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), Medco
has reversed its policy of prior authorization for
Alzheimer drugs for Medicare Part D beneficiaries
over age 65. This applies to all FDA-approved Alzheimer
medications: Aricept, Exelon, Razadyne
and Namenda.
This important change to Medco’s policy ensures access
to Alzheimer drugs for Medicare benefi ciaries
enrolled in its prescription drug plans.
Under prior authorization, a drug plan can establish
which criteria must be met before it will cover treatments.
Often, the restrictive criteria inappropriately
include a Mini Mental Status Examination score,
which does not account for factors such as an indi-
vidual’s level of function in daily life or educational
and cultural factors that could adversely infl uence
a test score. The result could prevent people with
Alzheimer’s from getting medications they need.
Now, only RxAmerica and Silverscript still require
prior authorization. The Association is continuing
to work with CMS to address these companies’
policies, in addition to other issues and concerns
relating to Medicare Part D.
The Association maintains that the doctor-patient
relationship should be the basis of medical treatment
and that only a clinical judgment of the treating physician
in conjunction with the patient/family should
determine whether or not a drug is appropriate for
a patient and for how long.
Safe Return Registration Day Nov. 11
Remember 11/11 at 11:00 for Safe
Return Registration Day in Eastern
Washington and North Idaho. Registration
events will take place at eight
care facilities from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Saturday, Nov. 11.
Safe Return is a nationwide identifi -
cation and support program working
at the community level. Assistance is
available 24 hours a day, whenever a
person is lost or found. One call immediately
activates the community
support network to help reunited a
lost person with Alzheimer’s disease
with his or her caregivers.
When an individual is missing, Safe
Return sends the enrolled person’s information
and photo to local law enforcement.
When a person is found,
a citizen or law offi cial calls the 800
number, and Safe Return notifies
listed contacts. The local Alzheimer’s
Association chapter provides support
to the family during the incident.
Cost of the program is $40, which
includes a bracelet or necklace with
the enrollee’s ID number and Safe
Return’s toll-free number, iron-on
clothing labels, key chain, sticker,
wallet card and refrigerator magnet.
There is an annual $20 program administration
fee beginning with the
second year that helps Safe Return
respond to the more than 6,000 calls
for help nationwide each year.
Why is this important?
• 60 percent of people with Alzheimer’s
disease will wander
• Half of those who wander risk
www.inwalza.org
serious injury or death if not found within 24 hours
• 98 percent of Safe Return enrollees who wander will return home safely
Take advantage of this opportunity Nov. 11 to:
• Attend an education seminar featuring tips on preventing wandering
• Register your loved one in the Alzheimer’s Association’s life-saving
Safe Return bracelet program
Researchers Untangle
Enzyme That May Fight
Alzheimer’s
Researchers at the University of California, Los Angeles, have uncovered
what appears to be a natural protective mechanism against a central cause
of neuronal death found in Alzheimer’s disease and similar neurodegenerative
diseases.
Tests with genetically engineered mice and fruit fl ies revealed that a
particular enzyme, called puromycin-sensitive aminopeptidase, prevents
brain degeneration by snipping apart the abnormal tangles of protein
called tau that are associated with cognitive decline.
Tests on human brain cells confi rm that researchers may be on the right
track. However, study co-author Dr. Daniel Geschwind cautioned that
it will be years before drugs for humans are developed.
I would like to thank all of the
North Idaho Memory-Doggie
Walk and Spokane Memory-
Doggie volunteers for their
hard work and dedication. The
volunteers and staff absolutely
outdid themselves this year.
The North Idaho Walk was not
only gorgeous but it also raised
over $9,000 more this year
with a total income well over
$46,000. The Spokane Walk
day was also a success with its
new location and a near record
turnout. Spokane will work on
its registration and staging area
for the Doggie Walkers next year.
Our Chapter receives no funding from
the National Alzheimer’s Association
or from the government. Memory
Walk and our other fundraising events
allow us to provide the many education
and support services to families
throughout North Idaho and Eastern
Washington. Services include:
• More than 60 education events in
North Idaho and Eastern Washington
that are new and include
regional and national speakers
• Local and 24-Hour Helplines that
serve an average of 75 families
a month
• Face to face meetings with hundreds
of families
• Coordination of respite services
of the Senior Companion Program
in Kootenai County
• A Safe Return program that has
saved six people within the last
two years
• Family information packets and
hundreds of brochures and fact
sheets
• Caregiver Chat Rooms and Bulletin
Boards on our national website
(www.alz.org)
• The new CareFinder feature on our
national website (www.alz.org)
that assists families in determining
their loved one’s needs and finding
a residential care facility to meet
those needs.
Our Chapter’s efforts are not limited
to just services. Our Chapter
will contribute $11,500 for research
this year.
We also advocate in Washington
D.C., Olympia and Boise. The
Alzheimer’s Demonstration Grants
from the National Institutes
on Aging would not exist
without the work of the
Alzheimer’s Association and
many others. Alzheimer’s
Demonstration Grants allow
states to explore new ways to
provide support services to
caregivers. This includes services
such as respite, education,
rural support groups and
much more. Both the State of
Idaho and the State of Washington
are beneficiaries of
these grants. Volunteers and
staff from our sister chapters
from across the nation, along with
myself, traveled in June to Washington
D.C. to speak with the congressional
delegations from Idaho
and Washington to stop $7 million
in budget cuts to Alzheimer’s disease
research and caregiver support
funds. I was able to meet with Sen.
Larry Craig, R-ID, and staff from
the offi ces of the other representative
and senators.
I would like to give a special thank
you to all of our donors and volunteers
who have supported our
families with their time, talent,
and treasure. If you haven’t yet
donated or volunteered, there is
still time. We need your continued
support in order to continue this
important work to support families
who are battling this heartbreaking
disease everyday.
Study Reinforces Caution in
Using Antipsychotic Drugs
A large, federally funded study testing three secondgeneration
“atypical” antipsychotic drugs to treat
behavioral Alzheimer symptoms found all three gave
physicians an overall impression the drugs were helping
about 30 percent of the time. However, their benefi t
did not differ signifi cantly from a placebo (a look-alike
“dummy treatment”), which seemed to help about 20
percent of the time.
All of the drugs were associated with one or more serious
side effects, including muscle spasms, tremors and
other involuntary movements, sedation and confusion.
There were no signifi cant differences in the average
length of time participants were able to take any of the
drugs before study physicians stopped them due to lack
of benefi t or side effects. Findings appear in the Oct.
12 New England Journal of Medicine.
“This large, well-designed trial supports an emerging
clinical consensus that while antipsychotic drugs continue
to have a place in treating behavioral Alzheimer
symptoms under some circumstances, the decision to
use them needs to be thoughtfully considered, closely
monitored and carefully tailored to the situation,” says
William H. Thies, Ph.D., Alzheimer’s Association vice
president of medical and scientifi c relations.
“Combativeness, agitation, anxiety, excessive suspiciousness
and other behavioral manifestations can be
among the most troubling aspects of the disease for
diagnosed individuals and family and professional
caregivers,” Thies notes. “Although every effort should
be made to fi nd non-drug strategies to reduce these
symptoms, sometimes medications may need to be
considered when other approaches don’t help.”
The study enrolled 421 individuals, 57 percent needing
a level of care equivalent to assisted living and 17
percent requiring the equivalent of nursing home care.
After 12 weeks of treatment, physicians felt there was
at least a modest overall improvement in 32 percent of
those taking olanzapine (Zyprexa), 26 percent taking
quetiapine (Seroquel), 29 percent taking risperidone
(Risperdal) and 21 percent taking the placebo.
Common side effects included parkinsonism and involuntary
movement (12 percent in the olanzapine and
risperidone groups, 2 percent in the quetiapine group,
and 1 percent in the placebo group); sedation (15 to
24 percent in the three treatment groups, 5 percent
in the placebo group); and confusion (18 percent in
the olanzapine group, 11 percent in the risperidone
group and 5 percent in the placebo group). Participants
tended to gain weight with olanzapine and risperidone
and to lose weight on the placebo.
Few studies have directly compared the effectiveness
of different atypical antipsychotic drugs as
treatments for behavioral Alzheimer symptoms. This
study was funded by the National Institute of Mental
Health (NIMH), one of the U.S. National Institutes
of Health.
Your voice can make a difference.
Advocacy is a major component of the Alzheimer’s Association mission. Advocates are people
with Alzheimer’s and related disorders, caregivers, friends and families whose voices together are
a powerful tool for change and hope of a future without Alzheimer’s.
Alzheimer advocates are calling for advancements in research and enhanced care and support at
the federal, state and local levels. The payoff has been phenomenal to date: substantial increases
in federal research funding, growth in state-supported services and improvements in the quality
of care for those in nursing homes.
You can make a difference in our battle against Alzheimer’s disease and we
invite you to become an advocate.
This section will provide you with an overview of our priorities and tools you can use as an
advocate to advance our mission.
Contact Joel Loiacono at (509) 473-3390 or Email Joel at joel.loiacono@alz.org
